Hexoral how to use

Instructions for use of Hexoral spray - composition, properties, dosage and contraindications

A sore throat is one of the very first symptoms of a cold. And if treatment is started on time, it is quite possible to avoid further spread of infection and bacteria.

Table of contents:

To do this, you can use a proven drug such as Hexoral spray.

Composition and properties of Hexoral spray

Hexoral spray is considered an excellent antiseptic, which also produces an analgesic effect. Thanks to the convenient release form, you can take it with you to work or school, so as not to miss the next stage of treatment.

The main active ingredient in the drug is hexetidine, which spreads very well and attaches to the mucous membrane of the throat. But at the same time, due to its chemical composition, it is practically not absorbed, thereby exerting a direct local effect.

In addition to hexethidine, the drug contains many auxiliary components that help make its use more pleasant.

Those who have used Hexoral spray note that it may taste unpleasant the very first time. After conducting research, scientists noticed that even with a single use of the spray, the substance can remain on the gum mucosa for many hours. As for the throat mucosa itself, the drug remains here for about 10 hours.

More information about sore throat can be found in the video.

As a rule, it is recommended to use it two or three times a day, depending on how bad the throat hurts and what caused the illness.

Effect of the drug

The drug is complex, as it has several important and necessary actions at once, especially during a cold:

  1. Analgesic. When you have a cold, your throat can be very sore, so much so that it even hurts the patient not only to eat, but also to simply remain silent. In this case, after using Hexoral spray, the patient feels relief literally within a minute, since the substances included in its composition can relieve pain, albeit for a short period.
  2. Antibacterial. Very often, the cause of a sore throat is bacteria that have entered the body and begun their destructive effect. In this case, it is very important to start using the spray in time.
  3. Antimicrobial.
  4. Enveloping. Patients who often use Gescoral when treating a throat note that after one injection it becomes easier to breathe, the soreness stops, since the drug not only kills germs, but also envelops the mucous membrane, easing the general condition.
  5. Reduces swelling of the throat, stopping the bursting of capillaries.

Thanks to the above actions, the drug is prescribed not only for the treatment of simple colds, but also for influenza and ARVI, when the symptoms manifest themselves much more.

Indications for use of Hexoral spray

Purpose of Hexoral spray

Hexoral spray is prescribed for a wide range of diseases associated with the respiratory tract.

The main indications include:

  • Any inflammatory and infectious diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx. Sometimes illnesses are not caused by a cold. Often a person can get hurt by something while eating (for example, a bone, etc.). And in this case, when infections quickly penetrate through the wound, it is advisable to use the drug to eliminate it.
  • During the treatment of purulent diseases in the oral cavity and pharynx, even when antibiotics are prescribed.
  • Angina. During a sore throat, it is very important not only to kill germs and bacteria, but also to remove swelling, because it can become stronger and block the airways.
  • Bleeding gums. Most often, gums bleed only when some kind of infection has penetrated them. And in this case, it is very important to reduce bleeding and carry out a disinfection procedure.
  • Mouth ulcers, in which it becomes difficult and painful for a person to swallow, any meal is painful.
  • Infection of tooth sockets after their extraction. What happens very often when visiting non-specialized dental clinics and pulling teeth at home.
  • When a fungal infection enters the oral cavity.
  • Before surgery in the mouth, as well as after.
  • To eliminate bad breath, especially associated with the destruction of tumors in the mouth and throat. In this case, the inflammatory focus is removed, and also, due to its deodorizing property, the odor is reduced.

Very often, people use Hexoral spray when the first signs of a cold appear. So, sneezing and a slight tickle may appear. In this case, the drug is able to completely remove the infection in a short period of time, thereby saving the person from a severe cold.

Use of the drug

Hexoral spray dosage

Some people believe that the more often you use the drug, the better it will be. In fact, this is the biggest misconception. Hexoral has an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect for ten to twelve hours, and that is why it should be used no more than twice a day.

In rare cases, when a specialist gives such instructions, it is allowed to increase the number of applications up to 3 times a day at regular intervals. Moreover, it must be used after meals, since injecting and then eating or drinking water will completely remove the active substance from the mucous membrane, thereby reducing the effectiveness to almost zero.

It should be noted that the aerosol applicator must be inserted into the child’s mouth and held in an upright position.

After this, you need to press the cap and spray the medicine for two seconds. If the doctor examined the throat and said exactly on which side the largest source of inflammation is located, then it is advisable to direct the stream in that direction. As for children, if the doctor said to use Hexoral spray, then you need to do it with caution.

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor after examining the patient’s throat. And only if he does not see even the slightest foci of inflammation will he stop treatment.

Side effects and contraindications

Even the best drugs, which can literally “get a person back on their feet” in a short period of time, have a number of contraindications and side effects, because of which they must be used with caution.

If we talk about side effects, then these include the appearance of an allergic reaction, which usually manifests itself in the form of even greater swelling of the throat mucosa. And also the appearance of soreness. In addition, some patients note that after starting to use Hexoral spray, their taste changed slightly and obvious sensitivity disappeared. But this goes away quickly after the treatment ends.

Separately, it is necessary to say about contraindications:

  • The drug is not recommended for use in children under 3 years of age because it is quite strong for them.
  • Also, if there is an individual intolerance to the auxiliary components (or the main one), then using it is strictly prohibited.

In any case, before use, it is best to consult with your doctor, who will tell you exactly whether it can be used or not.

Using Hexoral spray during pregnancy

Hexoral spray during pregnancy

Due to the fact that during pregnancy a woman's immunity is lowered, the risk of acute respiratory viral infection increases, one of the first symptoms of which will be a sore throat.

Women are not always able to cope with a cold by resorting to traditional methods of treatment. And if the pain becomes severe and unbearable, the doctor may prescribe Hexoral spray.

There is no information about how the drug can harm during pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding, because no research has been conducted on this topic. But due to the specificity of the action of the active chemical substance and its almost zero absorption into the blood, a specialist can prescribe Hexoral to a pregnant woman, but only when the benefit to the mother is higher than the harm to the child.

Therefore, before you decide to use it while pregnant, it is better to consult your doctor.

As for analogues, Stopangin is one and more affordable. Its operating principle is the same, although it tastes a little different and has more pronounced properties, for example, it may make the tongue a little numb.

In any case, one of the most effective drugs against sore throat is Hexoral spray. The instructions for use are written very clearly, so everyone can understand and find out the exact pharmacological action of the medicine.

In our family, Hexoral is an indispensable drug and is always in the home medicine cabinet. As soon as the throat begins to tingle or irritate, immediately irrigate the throat with it in accordance with the instructions. This allows you to prevent inflammation at the very initial stage.

How to use Hexoral spray according to the instructions correctly

Hexoral in the form of a spray receives good reviews from patients susceptible to inflammatory throat diseases. Being an effective remedy against bacterial and fungal infections, it is safe and can be used by those categories of patients for whom many drugs are contraindicated.

Instructions for use of the Hexoral aerosol recommend the product for use by pregnant women, as well as children of any age.

Instructions for use of Hexoral spray

Hexoral belongs to non-dosed spray aerosols. When you press the release nozzle, the product is sprayed not once, but as long as you press. Instructions for use of Hexoral spray advise spraying the product for 1-2 seconds.

Instructions for adults

Spray the product while sitting or standing with the head in a vertical position.

Follow the following instructions:

  1. Place the spray nozzle on the bottle.
  2. Hold the bottle vertically: bottom down, nozzle up.
  3. Insert the spray tip into your mouth and aim it at the back of your throat.
  4. Inhale and hold your breath.
  5. Press and hold the release nozzle for 1-2 seconds.
  6. Exhale and continue breathing.

Aerosol Hexoral, settling on the mucous membrane of the throat, remains on it for up to 12 hours. Instructions for use of Hexoral aerosol recommend using it twice a day: morning and evening - both times after meals. For the medication to work more effectively, you should avoid eating or drinking for as long as possible after spraying.

Hexoral spray for children

The product is recommended for children from 3 years of age. As noted in the instructions for use of Hexoral spray, the age limit is associated with two factors:

  • The child must be able to hold his breath;
  • The child should calmly accept the introduction of the spray nozzle into the mouth.

Thus, if the child understands the meaning of the procedure and does not resist it, then the spray can be used by children under 3 years of age.

Instructions for use of Hexoral spray for children:

  1. If possible, explain to your child the meaning of the procedure. Explain that you will need to hold your breath. Practice: for example, on the count of “one” the child holds his breath, on the count of “four” he exhales. Children copy the actions of adults well: it will be a good help if the adult performing the procedure takes a deep breath and holds his breath so that the child can see how this is done.
  2. Ask your child to open his mouth. Please note that the root of the tongue should not block access to the throat, i.e. The child must breathe through his mouth before holding his breath.
  3. Hold the bottle vertically with the nozzle facing up.
  4. Carefully insert the spray nozzle into your mouth shallowly: the pressure in the balloon is enough to spray the medicine 5-8 cm.
  5. Give the command to hold your breath.
  6. After making sure that the breath is held, press the release nozzle and hold for 1 second.
  7. Remove the mouthpiece from your mouth.

Hexoral has a menthol flavor. Not all children perceive the use of aerosol positively. Moreover, after spraying, you must refrain from eating and drinking for at least 1-2 hours. Prepare a toy in advance to distract your child from possible unpleasant sensations.

During pregnancy

After spraying, Hexoral remains on the mucous membrane, practically not penetrating into the bloodstream. In studies conducted on the safety of the drug, no undesirable effects on the fetus were identified. However, no studies have been conducted on the penetration of hexethidine through the placenta, and conclusions about the safety of the drug for pregnant women are made solely on the basis of the fact that the substance, if it penetrates the systemic bloodstream, does so in microscopic quantities.

Hexoral during pregnancy in the 2nd trimester and 3rd trimester is considered the safest of all antiseptic drugs for the treatment of bacterial and fungal throat infections. However, this does not obviate the need to consult a doctor.

Hexoral during lactation

There are no data on the penetration of hecatidine into breast milk. The theoretical probability of such penetration is extremely low: the drug acts locally and is not absorbed. The use of Hexoral during lactation is considered safe.

Composition and properties of the spray

The antiseptic and antifungal effect of Hexoral is due to its constituent hecatidine (0.2%). This chemical disrupts metabolic processes in bacteria and fungi, damages their outer shell, which together leads to their death.

Medical alcohol (4.3%) has an additional antiseptic effect.

Levomenthol has a mild anesthetic effect.

As excipients, Hexoral spray also contains:

The spray is available in a volume of 40 ml.

Indications for use

Hexoral spray is indicated for inflammatory diseases of the throat that have a bacterial and/or fungal cause.

For sore throat

Levomenthol, which is part of the drug, reduces the sensitivity of the throat mucosa, thereby reducing soreness and pain. Since during self-treatment the cause of pain is not clear - it can be either viral or bacterial - it is advisable to use Hexoral spray in combination with immunomodulating agents (Ingavirin, Ergoferon, Grippferon, etc.).

For a cold

Use Hexoral spray for colds in accordance with the instructions if respiratory symptoms appear - cough, tickling, accompanied by malaise, fever. Spray twice daily for as long as painful symptoms persist, but not for more than 7 days. Remember that if the condition does not improve by day 3, you should seek qualified medical help to conduct additional tests and prescribe appropriate antibiotics.

For sore throat

Sore throat always has a bacterial cause. The most common pathogen is streptococci, usually sensitive to hexethidine. A convenient spray nozzle allows you to spray the medicine directly onto the inflamed tonsils.

At the same time, it should be borne in mind that a local antiseptic is an additional remedy in the treatment of sore throat. To suppress the development of infection, antibiotics are required.

For pharyngitis

Hexoral spray is indicated for the treatment of bacterial or fungal pharyngitis. However, due to the fact that in most cases pharyngitis begins as a viral disease, immunomodulatory therapy aimed at preventing the replication of viruses is of paramount importance.

For pharyngitis in children, Hexoral is indicated from the first day of the disease, because bacterial infection in childhood develops rapidly. There will be no harm from the preventive use of Hexoral. At the same time, it will minimize the consequences of the viral disease.

Other types of Hexoral

Hexoral tablets

By analogy with Hexoral spray, the tablets contain several components that act in two directions:

Hexoral tablets contain benzocaine (Tabs) or lidocaine (Tabs Classic and Tabs Extra) as an anesthetic. The analgesic effect of tablets is more noticeable than that of a spray.

Hexoral tablets are taken by dissolving them in the mouth. They are contraindicated in children.

Hexoral solution

The purpose of Hexoral solution is to treat bacterial and fungal infections of the oral cavity by rinsing. The gargling procedure is ineffective for sore throats, or at least less effective than a fine spray.

Side effects and contraindications

Hexoral acts locally. Does not penetrate tissue. Absorption into the systemic circulation is minimal. Possible side effects include a local irritation reaction in the form of redness of the mucous membrane, soreness or itching.

In this regard, the spray is contraindicated in case of individual sensitivity to the components of the drug.

As a result of laryngospasm, the child's breathing becomes difficult and may stop completely.

List of drug analogues

In pharmacies you can find several drugs similar in action to Hexoral. Of these, two of them are direct analogues in composition.

Analogs are cheaper

You can save from 40% to 70% percent if you use one of the following drugs instead of Hexoral:

Maxicold Lor, a Russian-made spray, is the closest analogue of Hexoral. It contains hexetidine and other substances (levomentone, medical alcohol, plant extracts) in concentrations similar or approximately equal to Hexoral. It is used in the same way. In the instructions for use, the manufacturer does not recommend using Maxicold Lor for children under 8 years of age.

Kameton spray is a product of the domestic pharmaceutical industry, produced for more than 50 years. The antiseptic effect is due to chlorobutalone and eucalyptus oil. The composition also contains anesthetic substances: levomenthol, camphor.

Miramistin differs from the drugs discussed above in the absence of taste and smell. For people who cannot tolerate menthol and camphor, Miramistin is a good alternative as an adjuvant for the treatment of pharyngitis, laryngitis and sore throat. It is not sprayed finely, so there is no risk of respiratory tract spasms in children. The only disadvantage of Miramistin is that the drug is sold in a large-capacity bottle of 150 ml, the price of which is higher than Hexoral 40 ml. However, if we compare the same volumes, then the cost of Miramistin is 3 times lower than Hexoral (i.e. savings - 70%).

Analogs are more expensive

In pharmacies you can find sprays that are in a higher price category. These include:

Stopangin, a Czech-made drug, is the second direct analogue of Hexoral in composition. Available in 30 ml bottles. With a similar regimen, the cost of treatment with Stopangin will be 20% more expensive.

Novosept is produced by a Dutch pharmaceutical company. It is not analogous to Hexoral in composition, but also has an antiseptic and analgesic effect. Among other things, it contains zinc sulfate, which stimulates local mucosal immunity. The price of a 25 ml bottle is comparable to the cost of Hexoral. However, Novosept needs to be used every 2 hours (5-6 times a day), which is why the cost of treatment increases significantly. In addition, the drug is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Conclusion

Instructions for use of Hexoral spray recommend using it for bacterial or fungal throat infections (colds, sore throat, pharyngitis) twice a day.

The spray is indicated for children from 3 years of age or earlier, if the child calmly tolerates aerosol spraying and can hold his breath. Hexoral can be used during pregnancy, with the exception of the 1st trimester, during which you should abstain from the drug or, at least, discuss the issue with your doctor.

A cheaper analogue of Hexoral is Maxicold Lor spray. Its price is on average 40% lower.

Reviews

Elizaveta, 34 years old

The child had a very sore throat, I suspected a cold and bought Hexoral spray to spray in the mouth. The drug is convenient, we irrigated the throat with it twice a day according to the instructions - we held our breath and did not eat after spraying. Within a week, the cold completely disappeared, my throat stopped being red, and my breathing was restored. I recommend this product!

After an unsuccessful trip to the dentist, I developed stomatitis; it was painful to eat any food and even drink water. I started looking for recommendations on the Internet and came across a review of Hexoral solution. I bought it and started rinsing my mouth. After the first procedure, relief came, and after three days I was able to return to normal food intake.

When I had a tooth removed, I noticed that the doctor soaked cotton swabs in a red liquid and placed them in the cavity. I asked what kind of medicine it was - he replied that Hexoral, and advised me to gargle for a couple of days after removal to prevent microorganisms from developing. That's what I did, the liquid is similar to mouthwash.

The child fell ill with a sore throat, purulent deposits appeared on the tonsils, and his throat hurt. The doctor was convinced that he was over six years old and prescribed Hexoral spray. I sprayed it on the affected areas, but noticed that the child was wincing. The liquid burned his throat, so he had to give it up. I will look for an analogue based on reviews from friends.
