Good day, dear readers.

Table of contents:

Today I decided to share with you information that is extremely important for young mothers. I'll tell you how to clean a newborn's nose. Why did I think it was necessary to cover this topic? It's simple - if you clean the nose incorrectly, you can harm the baby.

1. What is the purpose of cleansing?

After discharge and the maternity hospital, you are left alone with the child, now the entire responsibility for caring for the baby is on your shoulders. And if previously a nurse could always come to the rescue, now you have to cope on your own. And this is inevitable.

A stuffy nose in babies is a fairly common occurrence. The fact is that the child’s nasopharynx is not yet formed and from a lack of fresh air the nose can become covered with crusts. Also, congestion occurs due to a cold; the child cannot even eat or sleep due to the abundant secretion of snot.

Before taking measures to eliminate congestion, you need to understand the cause of its occurrence.

2. Why the nose is stuffy, reasons

Remember, a baby's wheezing in the first week of life is quite normal! It is at this time that the baby gets used to life not in the womb, but in the whole world. During this time, he gets rid of excess water by sneezing.

After a week, the cause of snoring is various factors:

  • insufficient air humidity;
  • pungent odors, dust;
  • cold, virus;
  • smoke from cigarettes.

Has the cause been established? We begin to eliminate congestion.

3. Choosing a method for cleaning the nose

Often young mothers have a question: what to clean with? To choose the appropriate option, you need to determine the degree of congestion.

Each mother independently decides which of the proposed options she will use. I suggest you figure out how to properly clean your nose.

4. Clean your nose with a flagellum

Usually this method is chosen to get rid of boogers or crusts in the nose of a newborn. Flagella are made from improvised means in one of the convenient ways:

  1. Cotton wool and matches. We tear off a piece of cotton wool and wrap it around a match. After the formation of a long, twisted (and slightly hard) cotton tube, pull out the match.
  2. Cotton pad. Cut the disk into 2 parts. We set aside one part, cut the second into another 3-4 parts. Twist a small triangle (this is 1/6 or 1/8 of a cotton pad).

The flagella are ready. Now choose the oil. If you ask your grandmother or mother what kind of oil they used when they cleaned our noses, they will either say “none” or “vegetable oil”.

Let's move on to the process itself. Before cleaning the nose with a flagellum, you need to soften the crusts. To do this, you can use children's "Aqua Maris".

Next, take a twisted cotton tube and dip the tip into the oil. You can take special baby oil or boiled vegetable oil. Carefully insert the flagellum into the nasal passage (but no more than 2 cm) and twist the tube clockwise. If the crusts do not come off completely, repeat the procedure. For each nostril we take a new flagellum.

It’s good if at first someone from your family helps you hold the baby’s head. You can, for example, ask your husband.

5. Clean your nose with a syringe or bulb

This method is suitable if the child needs to clear the nasal passage not only from boogers, but also from snot.

Follow the following instructions:

  1. Soften the crusts in the nose. To do this, you can use a saline solution. It is enough for the baby to drip a couple of drops of the solution into his nose (a warm bath before the procedure can be an alternative).
  2. Sterilize the syringe (bulb). It is enough to pour hot water over the device. We wait until it cools completely.
  3. Press on the bottom part of the syringe (ball) to do this. to extract air.
  4. We insert the tip of the pear into the nostril of the crumbs and gradually unclench the ball. If the snot does not come out completely, we repeat the procedure. We do the same with the second nostril.

6. Clean the nose with an aspirator

It is enough to simply clean the child’s nasal passages with an aspirator. You can buy it in literally every pharmacy.

There are several types of aspirators:

  • Mechanical (nasal). It is a tube, one end of which is inserted into the child's nostril. Through the other end, the mother sucks in air (mucus accumulates in a special container).
  • Vacuum. The device is connected to a device that sucks up snot.
  • Electronic. Combines the functions of a vacuum and mechanical aspirator. The tip is also placed in the baby's nasal passage. After pressing the power button, the snot suction process begins.

Such a device can both clean the nose of crusts and relieve the baby of nasal congestion by removing mucus.

7. Be careful not to cause harm

Remember that in any business there is a rule: “do no harm.” It doesn’t matter how you decide to clear your baby’s nose, the main thing is that it is beneficial.

There is no need to suck out snot with your mouth. This is grandma's old way, there are many alternatives. This method does not guarantee a good result - once; threatens to become infected from a child - two.

You already know how to clean your nose using flagella. Do not forget, in order for the procedure to be as safe as possible, do not forget to remove the match from the tube. Any awkward movement by the baby (or mother) and the match will scratch the mucous membrane.

Do not put breast milk in your nose. Although there is an opinion that breast milk is a cure for everything, Dr. Komarovsky believes differently: “Milk is a great place for the proliferation of microbes.”

Dear mothers, remember that the baby’s health is the most important thing. Therefore, do not forget that there are times when amateur activities can only harm your baby. If you notice strange symptoms in your child, call your doctor!

8. When to see a doctor

Always monitor changes in your baby's mood and well-being. Sometimes a stuffy nose is a simple nuisance in everyday life. Often, a runny nose is one of the symptoms of the disease.

Call your doctor if you notice the following symptoms:

  • the nose is stuffy for two or more weeks;
  • the child has a rash;
  • the baby refuses to eat and behaves anxiously;
  • constant screaming and crying in the child;
  • heavy intermittent breathing;
  • increased body temperature and others.

Keep track: how often does your child have a stuffy nose? To prevent the nose from being constantly stuffy, it is necessary to take preventive measures.

9. What to do to help your child breathe calmly

For a newborn baby, the air he breathes is of great importance. Due to heaters and hot radiators, air humidity becomes insufficient. An unventilated room provokes the formation of crusts.

To make your baby feel as comfortable as possible at home, purchase a humidifier. It will help your child breathe without difficulty. Moreover, children who are in a well-ventilated area get sick much less often.

And finally, I suggest you watch a video on how to properly clean a newborn’s nose:

How to clean a newborn's nose

Most young mothers and especially fathers, immediately after being discharged from the maternity hospital, try not to disturb their baby again, so as not to scare him or harm him. When it comes to hygiene procedures, they are completely lost and do not understand what to do. But you will have to learn and find out how to clean a newborn’s nose. Even a minimal amount of mucus can negatively affect the baby's quiet breathing.

Why do you clean a newborn's nose?

In the first few months of a baby's life, a procedure such as cleansing the nose is mandatory. This need is caused by the fact that the nasal passages of a newborn are very narrow, a lot of dust and mucus accumulate in them, which make breathing difficult and interfere with feeding and sleep. Even a tiny piece of lint from clothing can cause a toddler’s nose to become clogged. The baby does not know how to blow his nose, he is too weak and cannot cope with this problem on his own, so the help of his parents is necessary.

Causes of crust formation

The occurrence of dry boogers (crusts) in an infant is associated with its physiological characteristics. The mucous membrane of the nose constantly produces mucus, which is exposed to dust and other harmful substances from the outside. The air that small children inhale dries out these mucous secretions, resulting in the formation of crusts. Newborns do not know how to blow their nose and breathe through their mouths, so the occurrence of dry snot is inevitable.

The main reasons for the formation of crusts include:

  • Colds, runny nose, which are accompanied by inflammatory processes of the nasal mucosa.
  • The air in the room where the newborn is located is too dry.

You can reduce the appearance of crusts on your baby’s nose by following these tips:

  • Control the air humidity (optimal indicator%) in the room where the baby is.
  • Constantly ventilate your child's room, especially in winter, because at this time various heating devices are turned on, and the air in the room becomes hot and dry.
  • Place several living plants on the windowsill in your baby’s room; they have a beneficial effect on the microclimate, moisturize and purify the air well.
  • If possible, install a special device for humidifying the air in the room.

How can you clean your baby's nose?

Cleansing manipulations of the respiratory tract are an unpleasant hygienic procedure for infants. He will turn his head and cry, and therefore you need to be extremely careful. Modern pediatricians, such as Dr. Komarovsky, do not recommend doing the following:

  • Use your mouth to suck mucus out of your newborn's nose.
  • Drip breast milk into the baby's nostrils, which can immediately develop microbes.
  • Do not use cotton swabs or matches with cotton wool wrapped around them for cleaning; these devices can injure the baby’s nasal mucosa.

Before you start cleaning your newborn's nose, you need to prepare all the necessary items in advance. The choice of such devices for cleaning the respiratory tract depends on the degree of blockage of the nose, the age of the child, and the reason for the procedure (congestion, daily care). Let's look at the most common spout cleaning tools, their types and methods of use.

Aspirator

A special hygienic device for suctioning mucus in newborns, which does not cause discomfort, is called an aspirator. Before using this device, the spout is slightly moistened with a special solution. There are several types of aspirators:

  • Mechanical. It is a small transparent container for snot with a straw and removable nozzles. One end of the tube is inserted into the newborn's nostril; through the second, the mother sucks in air and draws mucus from the nose into a special container.
  • Electronic. This is a special battery-powered “pear” that, at the press of a button, pulls out snot. An electronic aspirator often has additional functions - humidification, aerosol.
  • Vacuum. This device is used very rarely at home. In appearance, it resembles a mechanical aspirator, but it works by connecting to a special vacuum cleaner. It's inconvenient, noisy, cumbersome.

Aquamaris

To moisturize the mucous membrane of a newborn's nose and soften the crusts, use Aquamaris natural sea water. This drug can be used by infants under one year of age only in the form of drops; the spray is used for children over 1 year of age. Aquamaris drops contain many microelements and active substances, thanks to which the drug perfectly removes dust, takes care of the normal functioning of the nasal mucosa, and increases local immunity.

Syringe

The easiest to use and most common aspirator is a syringe. In appearance, it resembles a regular “pear”, but has a special removable silicone tip. For newborns, small syringes with soft silicone nozzles are used. The principle of operation of the device is simple - you squeeze the syringe with your hand so that the air comes out of it, and then you need to insert the tip into the baby’s nostril, gently open the bulb and pump out the mucus.

Pear

This is a traditional device that our mothers and grandmothers used. It was made of dense rubber and had a thin and soft tip. Using such a device is inconvenient and traumatic for a newborn. Modern pears have been improved:

  • they have a wide tip that does not go too deep into the nostril;
  • The tip of the device is removable, it can be easily unscrewed and washed;
  • The material of the bulb is silicone, which is much stronger than rubber and leads to less mucus suction force.

Cotton flagella

To remove small amounts of snot, crusts, and for daily hygiene procedures with a newborn, cotton pads are used. To make such a flagellum, you need to twist it from a piece of long cotton wool. Next, the device is lightly moistened with a special solution or sterile Vaseline and inserted into one nostril of the baby with slow rotational movements to a depth of 2 cm, then slowly and carefully removed. The procedure is repeated for the other nostril, but a new flagellum is used.

How to properly clean a baby's nose

In order not to harm the newborn, during the hygienic procedure for cleaning the spout, it is important to follow these rules:

  • If the baby is capricious or crying, postpone the procedure until he calms down.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with children's antibacterial soap and wipe them dry.
  • Prepare in advance all the necessary equipment and means for cleaning the newborn’s nose.
  • Comfortable temperature for babies in the room is one degree.
  • Ensure normal humidity in the room.
  • Make sure there is no dust in the room.
  • Never insert the device too deeply into your baby's nose.
  • Dried crusts need to be softened before stretching.

To make it easier for you to clean your baby’s nose, consider a detailed guide:

  1. The process of softening the crust and mucus. Apply drops of Aquamarine or saline solution to your newborn's nose. If you clean your nose in the evening, try giving your baby a warm bath, which will soften the mucus itself.
  2. Secure the baby's head. To do this, cover it with rolled up towels so that he cannot turn the head sharply.
  3. 2-3 minutes after instillation, clean the newborn’s nose with one of the following devices:
    • Cotton tourniquet. Slowly insert the turunda into the nostril and twist it, then gently pull it out.
    • Pear or syringe. Before cleaning the spout, pour boiling water over the device and wait until it cools down. Squeeze the bulb in your hands to release the air. Place the tip of the device on the baby's nasal passage and release the bulb clutched in your hands. Under pressure the mucus will come out. Then rinse the device and move on to the next nostril.
    • Aspirator. Pour boiling water over all parts of the device and cool it. Place one part of the aspirator tube to the newborn's nostril, and draw air from the other side with your mouth.

How often should you clean your nose?

The frequency of cleaning the baby’s nose depends on its individual physiological characteristics and the degree of congestion of the organ with snot. For some babies, once a day is enough, for others – several times. Perform cleaning procedures in the following cases:

  • If there are dry crusts in the respiratory tract.
  • When mucus has accumulated in the baby's nose.
  • When a newborn’s nose is clogged, he breathes heavily and his nose can be heard “grunting.”
  • If the baby burps during feeding and particles of milk get into the nose.

How to clean your nose correctly

The need to clear your nose can arise not only during illness, but also in a healthy person. The constant formation of mucus and different temperatures and humidity in the room, dirty air - all this can make you want to clear your nose. But it is especially important to properly cleanse the nose during a runny nose, when a lot of mucus forms at once and the mucous membrane of the nasal passages swells.

Improper cleansing of the nose can injure the mucous membrane, lead to nosebleeds, cause vasomotor rhinitis, nasal polyps, cause otitis media and damage to the eardrum. If you clean your child’s nose incorrectly, you risk disrupting the natural cleansing processes and then the nasal mucosa under normal conditions will either dry out or produce too much secretion.

How to properly clear a child's nose

In order to clean a newborn’s nose, you need to find out whether crusts have formed or whether there is a lot of thick mucus in the nose. If you know that your child has a runny nose, you can clear your nose with a special blower with a wide nozzle. Squeeze all the air out of the bulb, and then insert its tip into the child’s nose and release the pressure. Several such suction movements will help remove mucus from the nose when you have a runny nose.

But too thick mucus cannot be removed only with a pear. In this case, you first need to inject a few drops of saline into each nostril into your nose. After a minute, you can start cleaning your nose with a pear.

You can also clean your nose using special drops that you can buy at the pharmacy. Such drops are made from plant materials and are approved for use from an early age. The composition of the drops helps improve the condition of the nasal mucosa and increases local immunity.

If a child has dry crusts in his nose that cause him to constantly sneeze, then they must also be removed by first moistening the nasal mucosa. Place saline or natural drops into your child's nose and wait a few minutes. You can carry out the procedure twice within half an hour. Now prepare the turunda from the bandage, and carefully roll the turunda to remove the crusts. At this point, the child may sneeze, and this will be a natural way to get rid of crusts in the nose.

How to clear an adult's nose with a runny nose

Unlike children, an adult can blow out mucus that has accumulated in the nose. But if you do this too vigorously, you can injure not only the vessels of the nasal mucosa, but also the eardrum. With vigorous, sharp exhalation and poor nasal passages, the pressure here increases, and the pressure in the auditory tube also increases. Mucus from the nasal sinuses and passages can also be thrown into the auditory tube, and inflammation spreads to the ear, and otitis media develops.

If the mucus is not viscous, then it will be much easier to remove it with a sharp exhalation, and without unpleasant consequences. To do this, drop a few drops of saline or special drops into each nostril, repeat several times within half an hour if necessary, and then clear your nose by simply blowing your nose.

If you clear your nose by closing one nostril and blowing hard through the other, you also risk damaging your eardrum and getting otitis media. The pressure that builds up on the closed side of the nose also creates unfavorable conditions.

Daily hygiene procedures include cleansing the nose. It is correct to do this near the sink, when you wash your face in the morning and evening. Use special drops to wet the mucous membrane. After this, it will be easy for you to clean your nasal passages with cotton swabs, or simply blow them out, and the nasal mucosa will be better protected from viruses.

How to properly clean a baby's nose from snot?

Children from birth may have problems with nasal breathing due to congestion. A newborn is not able to blow his nose, so the responsibility for cleansing the nasal cavity lies with his parents. It is best to ask your doctor about how to clean your child’s nose without harming his health.

Causes of snot in newborns and infants

A child’s nose becomes stuffy when the mucous membrane swells or a large amount of mucus is produced in the cavity. Newly born children get used to breathing air, and not living in their mother’s womb surrounded by water. Adults should clean their nose when it is stuffy. They should also monitor the influence of factors that may cause a runny nose to develop. It can be:

  • dry air in the children's room;
  • dust;
  • strong odors (cigarette smoke, perfume);
  • viral diseases and infections.

In infants, difficulty in nasal breathing most often occurs due to dryness of the mucous membrane. Crusts form in the cavity, and it ceases to perform its main function - protective. Bacteria easily penetrate a child’s body and cause the development of disease.

Methods for moisturizing the nasal mucosa

A child can clear snot from his nose by sneezing. But if there is a lot of mucus, it can easily penetrate the ear canals or nasopharynx and cause a number of complications. To moisturize the mucous membranes in babies, you can use special drops. But they can be given to a newborn baby only after receiving approval from a doctor, since a number of drugs can cause swelling of the organ, provoke insomnia and even constipation.

A newborn's nose can be cleaned by rinsing. Even with regular use, this procedure does not pose any danger if performed correctly. To clean the cavity using this method, you can use:

  1. Ready-made pharmaceutical solution of Sodium Chloride - saline solution.
  2. Homemade saline solution.
  3. Pharmacy solutions of sea water for rinsing: Fluimarin, Physiomer, Morenasal, Aquamaris.

Young mothers should better ask their doctor about how to clear snot from a baby’s nose and rinse it properly. Improper use of medications or rinsing can cause injury to the cavity.

Possible ways to clean the spout

The choice of method for clearing a child’s nose depends on the degree of congestion. There are a sufficient number of ways in which you can pump out snot at home. Today, to suction snot, you can use:

  • cotton wool soaked in oil;
  • cotton swab;
  • syringe;
  • aspirator.

When removing snot using any of these methods, the depth of penetration into the nose should be taken into account. A child's passages are much narrower than those of adults, so it is easier to damage the blood vessels in them.

Method 1 - cleaning with a cotton pad

If you are wondering how to remove snot from a newborn without harming his health, you can safely use cotton wool. A small cone should be rolled out of cleaned cotton wool that does not contain any foreign matter. In size it should easily penetrate a child's nostril. Oil should be used for safe penetration. For example, Vaseline will do. A twisted flagellum is immersed in the liquid structure, which is then inserted into the nose and collects mucus with rotational movements. This method of pulling out snot will be ineffective if you have a severe runny nose. It is most suitable for getting rid of dry crusts.

Method 2 - using a cotton swab

To get rid of snot using a cotton swab, you should be extremely careful. Standard sticks are quite long, and the baby's nasal cavity is small and narrow. Wrong movement can cause bleeding. To perform the manipulation, you should give preference to a plastic rather than a wooden base of the stick. The effectiveness of this cleaning technique is average, and the risk of injury to the child’s nose is high.

Method 3 - sucking out snot with a syringe

You can find a lot of information on the Internet about how to pump out snot from a baby with a pear, despite the fact that this method is considered traumatic. The syringe itself is bought at a regular pharmacy. It has the smallest size and a soft rubber tip. This method is difficult to clean the entire nasopharynx, but the risk of injury is minimal. A syringe is also used to rinse the nose in children. It can be used to pump out excess solution.

Method 4 - cleansing the nose with an aspirator

To minimize the risk of injury, it is important to know how to suck out a child's snot using an aspirator. There are several types:

The force with which the mechanical aspirator sucks out snot is controlled by the mother herself. The nozzle suction device in it is an empty tube with a tube made of transparent material. Between them there is a foam rubber gasket that protects the mother from bacteria. She removes snot by sucking mucus from her nose with her mouth through a mechanical aspirator tube.

An electronic aspirator extracts snot by pressing a button on a battery-powered device. Its shape resembles a pharmaceutical rubber syringe.

A vacuum aspirator looks the same as a mechanical one. The difference is that it can be powered by a vacuum cleaner. How to clear their nose? It is enough to use a vacuum cleaner. It is safe to use only one in which the retraction force can be adjusted.

If we compare methods for sucking out snot from a baby, then using an aspirator is the most effective, but at the same time the most expensive. With its help, you can suck out snot from the nose at any depth.

Step-by-step instructions for cleaning a baby's nose

So that a young mother does not have questions about how to suck out a child’s snot correctly, it is enough to follow some rules and recommendations. Step by step it looks like this:

  1. Soften crusts in the nose. For these purposes, you can use a saline solution or give your baby a warm bath, which also softens the mucus. To soften crusts and rinse a newborn’s nose, never use medications in the form of sprays, since you cannot independently regulate the force of injection of the medication. But there is a risk of injuring the children's mucous membranes.
  2. Fix the child's head for further manipulation. Clean your baby's nose only when the head position is completely fixed. A child's restlessness can cause additional injury. If the children resist and do not allow the snot to be taken out, you will have to ask someone else to hold them.
  3. Clean the nasal cavity using any of the following methods (cotton buds, mouth aspirator, or vacuum cleaner). In this case, the depth of penetration into the nose should not exceed 20 millimeters.

To soften the crusts, moisturizing preparations with a vasoconstrictor effect can be used. Adrianol, Xilen, Nazivin Sensitive are suitable for babies under one year old. Their action allows you to relieve congestion and easily clear the cavity of mucus. When choosing a medicine, you should not forget about possible contraindications.

When using devices to cleanse the nasal cavity, they should first be disinfected by dousing them with boiling water. If mucus accumulates quickly, then after a medical prescription you can use vasoconstrictor drops. They quickly become addictive, so do not use them for more than 5 days. It is easier for a child to breathe with a nose cleared of snot. Parents will have to clean it until the baby learns to blow his nose on his own.

Precautions - important to know!

Every mother should know how to get snot out of her baby. You should clean your nose as many times a day as necessary for unimpeded nasal breathing. Be sure to check your nose before bed and every feeding. Cleaning the cavity should be carried out with extreme caution so as not to harm the baby’s health. Things to remember:

  1. Do not use medications to which the child is allergic.
  2. It is prohibited to use vasoconstrictor drops for longer than 5 days.
  3. The depth of immersion into the cavity when cleaning it should not exceed 2 centimeters.
  4. In newborns, the use of medications in the form of sprays is prohibited.
  5. Breast milk should not be instilled or rinsed in the nose of infants.
  6. Drugs should be used in accordance with age restrictions.

His health depends on how his mother sucks out the baby’s snot correctly. There is nothing complicated in this procedure. Therefore, once you get the hang of it, you can clean your nasal cavity in just a few minutes.

Have you ever noticed the expression “clean your beak”? Well, of course, this expression comes from natural phenomena, where various living creatures, while caring for themselves, clean their parts of the carcass. A person also needs to be able to clean his “beak,” that is, his nose.

What is it for? A clean nose means a clean nasopharynx, no problems with the throat and ears. The mucus in the nose causes discomfort because it not only clogs the nose, but also flows into the throat, irritating it and causing chronic tonsillitis. A sore throat is a gateway to infection. This is why it is very important to keep your nose clean.

How to clean your nose correctly?

First of all, you need to know that you don’t have to clean your nose every single day - it’s enough to do it periodically. There are many ways to cleanse the nasal cavity. Let's talk about the basic rules for proper cleansing of the nasal cavity.

On the Internet you can find a method that literally advises the following: put your palms together, lean over the sink, scoop water into your palms and suck it in with your nose, and then spit it out through your mouth. Know, dear readers, that this method is unacceptable, since rinsing your nose with plain water is simply painful. The nasal rinse should be slightly salty. This is why one of the most popular nasal rinses is seawater rinsing.

To prepare a solution for rinsing the nose, ordinary water is suitable, to which you need to add ordinary salt. Of course, if the water is filtered and the salt is sea salt, it will be even better. The solution should consist of 200 ml of water and 1/3 teaspoon of salt. To rinse the nose, they also use special powders, which are included in nasal rinsing preparations sold in pharmacies, such as “Dolphin” or “Aqua-Maris”.

To rinse your nose with the prepared solution, you can use several methods. For example, an ordinary rubber bulb, also called a syringe or enema, will do. There are also special teapots for washing. Regular teapots with a spout for brewing tea are also suitable.

You need to lean over the sink, tilt your head to the side, insert the tip of the bulb (or the spout of a teapot) into the nostril and press your fingers on the bulb so that the liquid begins to flow into the nasal passage and flow through the nasal cavity. Ideally, the fluid should then flow out of the other nostril. If the solution gets into the throat, even better, the throat will also heal in this way. Next, you tilt your head to the other side and do the same with the other nostril.

Attention! When rinsing your nose, keep your mouth open! And if the nose is clogged, and the liquid does not want to flow beyond the nostrils, then you must first drip any drops to free the nasal passages and only then rinse the nose. Gradually, with each procedure, the need for instilling vasoconstrictor drops into the nose will disappear by itself.

In addition to the above-described rinsing, you can also clean your nose in another way. This method is suitable when crusts constantly form in the nose, and the mucus dries out and interferes with breathing. You need to stick cotton swabs soaked in peach oil into your nasal passages for a minute. If you don’t have peach oil, any other oil will do, even simple sunflower oil.

How to clean your nose

  • At the beginning, the jet pressure should be small, but gradually it should be increased. In this way, you can avoid discomfort and damage to the nasal mucosa.
  • Before rinsing, you need to make sure that there are no open wounds in the nasal cavity.
  • After cleansing with sea water, you should rinse your nasopharynx with plain water, since salt corrodes the mucous membrane.
  • After rinsing, you should not blow your nose sharply for thirty minutes; you can blow out the remaining solution from each nostril in turn.
  • Children under 12 years of age should not rinse their nose with sea water to avoid burning the mucous membrane. It is necessary to properly clean a child’s nose under the guidance of a qualified ENT doctor. Then the procedure will be absolutely safe for the little patient.

    Is it worth doing this? There is usually no need to be so overzealous. It is better not to touch the baby’s nose again, and if necessary, use only gentle methods.

    No need to clean your nose: nature has provided everything

    In my motherhood, I was of the opinion that cleaning a newborn’s nose every day is not necessary. The only time when it is necessary to clean the nose is when there is a severe runny nose, which prevents the child from sucking normally, sleeping, and causes a lot of inconvenience.

    How to raise a child healthy and do this from the first days of life, see the online course “Healthy Child: Workshop for Mom” >>>

    Nature has taken care of ensuring a smooth transition for the newborn from the existence of an embryo to “adult” life. Therefore, his nasal passages are abundantly moistened and the presence of mucus in them is absolutely natural.

    • Many mothers note that no matter how hard they try to clean their newborn’s nose of the bugs, there are no fewer of them until everything goes away on its own.
    • Besides this, there are other points. During the newborn period, the nasal sinuses in children are quite narrow, and the wings of the nose are dense. They cannot be lifted to the side to facilitate access inside.

    Thanks to these features, an obstacle is created for large particles to enter the respiratory tract, as well as objects that the mother will try to push inside to clean the nose. This can be regarded as a signal from nature: it’s better not to interfere, no additional cleansing is needed, the body will cope on its own.

    • Your baby has a perfectly established self-cleaning system inside the spout. Its mucous membranes are constantly moisturized and covered with many microvilli. They push mucus or foreign particles towards the exit. And then, due to such natural processes as sneezing or scratching the nose, these piglets are easily removed. And again, it turns out that you shouldn’t worry too much about how to clean a newborn’s nose from boogers.

    How not to hurt your nose

    And now briefly about why frequent cleaning of a newborn’s nose can harm him. I will give only two facts.

    1. The cells of the mucous membrane produce a certain amount of interferon, which prevents the penetration of viruses and bacteria. By constantly cleaning the nose, we can destroy this protective layer and weaken the local immunity of the newborn;
    2. Passion for this hygienic procedure can lead to drying out the inner lining of the nasal passages and cause the opposite effect: the more often we wipe the inside of the nose, the more mucus the body will produce.

    So it turns out that no outside intervention is needed to clean a newborn’s nose. The child can cope with this problem on his own.

    Mom needs help

    However, there are also times when mom’s help in cleaning the nose is simply necessary.

    In normal conditions, the mucus in a newborn's nose has a liquid consistency and flows out on its own. It is enough just to wipe it regularly. Read the article about what care is required for a newborn baby>>>

    If the baby’s sniffles become thicker, it won’t be possible to cope without the mother. Before cleaning the nose of a newborn baby, they need to be thinned out. In this case, you should track the cause of this baby’s health condition and act according to the circumstances:

    • The problem may be that the air in the room where the newborn is constantly present is too dry. This leads to overdrying of the mucous membranes of the nose and its congestion. It is necessary to change the microclimate in the room and install a humidifier. Related article: temperature in the room for a newborn>>>
    • If you have dry bumps or a stuffy nose, using appropriate medications can help. Preparations based on sea water are quite popular, but regular saline solution is also suitable, which reduces the viscosity of mucus.
    • If your baby’s excessive sniffles are accompanied by other symptoms of respiratory diseases, then you shouldn’t wait until they go away on their own and help is needed. It may be recommended to periodically remove mucus using special devices. This could be a children's medical bulb with a thin soft tip or an aspirator for newborns.

    Important! You should definitely remember: you can use medications to clean a newborn’s nose only after consulting a doctor.

    The best ways to clean your nose

    Now let’s look at how to remove boogers from a newborn if they still cannot be removed on their own. You just need to soften the dry crusts and remove the goats from the spout.

    The best means to clean your baby’s nose are a cotton swab and petroleum jelly (you can replace it with another product, but in any case you need to do an allergy test first):

    1. From a small piece of cotton wool you need to twist a thin but dense “sausage” and lubricate one end with Vaseline;
    2. This part of the flagellum should be inserted into the newborn’s nostril and turned several times;
    3. If necessary, you can repeat this procedure again using another flagellum;
    4. The movements must be precise and fast, otherwise the child will begin to act up and cover himself with his hands.

    You can also clean a newborn’s nose using cotton pads. To do this, one circle should be cut into 4 – 6 parts. From each piece you need to roll up a narrow bag, then insert its sharp tip into the spout and pry off the bag.

    Know! It is important to remember that no other means (finger, cotton swab, match or toothpick) should be used to clean a newborn’s nose!

    Some mothers put a drop of breast milk into their nose (I have never done this). The flies will soften and you can easily remove them with a cotton swab.

    The child does not like having his nose manipulated, so be prepared to do everything quickly. Enlist your grandmother or husband to help. They can ring a rattle, make funny faces at the child, and while he calms down, looking at them, you can take snot or snot out of his nose.

    But on the Internet there are absolutely unreasonable and cruel methods that are apparently used by inexperienced mothers. The essence of one of them is that during bathing you need to immerse the baby under water. Moreover, they further explain that there will be no danger to the child from such actions (during this period, newborns can hold their breath under water), but after that he will sneeze or cough.

    This way, excess mucus and boogers are easily removed. Never do this! This will cause extreme stress in the child and may develop a fear of water. The child will be afraid to swim, and you will not lure him into the water in any way.

    How to clear your nose at home?

    Breathing through your nose is necessary and important. Nasal breathing is an active physiological process aimed not only at the entry of air into the lungs, but also at its preliminary release from mechanical contaminants and pathogenic microorganisms. Due to the fact that the air passes through the nasal cavity, it reaches the underlying parts of the respiratory tract cleaned and warmed - this helps prevent numerous diseases. The activity of mucociliary transport as one of the most important mechanisms for protecting the respiratory system depends on the activity of the ciliated epithelium and the characteristics of nasal mucus, and these parameters, in turn, are determined by the state of the nasal cavity. An integral component of the treatment and prevention of a runny nose is proper cleansing, so it is important to know how to clean your nose at home and whether it is safe to do so.

    To let your nose breathe

    Among the therapeutic non-drug measures aimed at improving nasal breathing, the most acceptable are:

    The purpose of a nasal toilet is to mechanically remove accumulations of mucus and crusts. Before removing the crusts, they should be softened. The definition of “nasal toilet” is closely related to the definition of “irrigation therapy”, or nasal irrigation. The difference between them is that in the first case, various means can be used to soften the crusts and cotton swabs directly for removal. In the second case, irrigation and washing are carried out using medicinal solutions. The nasal secretion is liquefied, which facilitates its evacuation. The method is also used to prepare for the administration of various drugs - antibacterial, antihistamines, topical decongestants and topical steroids.

    During rinsing, mucus is removed, as well as allergens and pathogenic microorganisms.

    Thus, toileting, or nasal cleaning, is intended to quickly remove elements that interfere with breathing and accumulations of mucus from the anterior parts of the nasal cavity, and irrigation therapy allows for a deeper cleansing of the nose. Sometimes nasal toilet and irrigation therapy methods are considered identical concepts, since the purpose of the implementation is to cleanse the nasal cavity.

    When is cleaning needed?

    Any procedures performed to affect the nasal cavity have both indications and contraindications. Cleaning your nose at home requires justification. If the nasal mucosa is not covered with crusts, and there is a sufficient level of humidity in the room where the person is, you should not resort to it. When the nose breathes independently without difficulty, active irrigation measures contribute to irritation of the mucous membrane and increase the risk of pathological changes in the auditory tube.

    What conditions make it necessary to clean your nose? They can be presented in the list:

    1. ARI (acute respiratory infections).
    2. Rhinitis of allergic nature.
    3. Atrophic rhinitis.
    4. Adenoid hypertrophy, chronic adenoiditis.
    5. Chronic rhinosinusitis.
    6. Surgical interventions on the paranasal sinuses.

    During the active phase of the inflammatory process, provoked by respiratory viruses and various bacterial agents, nasal congestion of varying severity occurs. Deterioration of nasal breathing contributes to increased headaches, drying of the mucous membrane of the lips and oral cavity. Studies conducted in various age groups have revealed that regular implementation of irrigation measures makes it possible to reduce the volume and frequency of use of vasoconstrictors. During the procedure, the microbial and viral load on the mucous membranes is reduced, dust particles are mechanically washed out and inflammatory mediators are removed. A significant advantage is the activation of local immune mechanisms and hydration of mucous membranes.

    Cleansing the nasal cavity is necessary to remove provoking allergens.

    It is known that the most effective way to combat allergies is to prevent and stop contact with substances that cause a reaction. Therefore, rinsing is effective as a method of prevention and therapy, helping to restore the functioning of mucociliary transport.

    Another reason to find out how to clean your nose is the increase in mucus viscosity and drying out of the nasal mucosa. The characteristics of nasal secretions largely depend on the temperature, humidity and dust levels of the premises. When using heating devices, the air becomes dry and hot, and the humidity rapidly drops. Dust aggravates the impact of these unfavorable environmental conditions.

    Performing nasal irrigation

    How to clear your nose while at home? There are various ways to introduce the rinsing agent. The most common among them are:

    • rinsing with a bulb syringe;
    • rinsing with a syringe without a needle;
    • rinsing with a pipette.

    Much depends on the age of the patient. For children, it is best to use containers that hold a limited and small amount of liquid - a regular pipette with a rubber bulb used for administering drops, or a bottle for nasal drops. A disposable syringe designed for 1.5 ml of solution is also suitable.

    Adult patients can use a rubber syringe. The volume of the rinsing solution is about 250 ml (for both halves of the nose). You can also use a syringe (for example, 20 ml). The frequency of repetitions of administration depends on what the solution is filled with.

    Irrigation solutions

    How to clear your nose at home? Can be used:

    • homemade products;
    • pharmaceutical products.

    To clean your nose as effectively as possible, saline solutions are suitable.

    You can prepare them yourself or purchase them at the pharmacy. Pharmacy products for nasal irrigation are available in drops, sprays and bottles. One of the most accessible and popular drugs is saline solution - this is an isotonic solution of 0.9% sodium chloride. There are also combined products indicated not only for mechanical cleansing - they have additional therapeutic effects (Rinorin, which may include chamomile extract, dexpanthenol, Quix based on Atlantic Ocean water, etc.). They should be used according to the instructions included with each drug. Before starting treatment, you should consult your doctor.

    The method for preparing homemade saline solution is quite simple. You will need clean (preferably filtered) boiled water in the amount of 1 liter and table salt. A teaspoon of salt should be dissolved in prepared water. In this case, the resulting liquid should not be cold or hot; a value of 35–40 °C should be achieved.

    The optimal temperature of the solution is close to body temperature.

    You can pour a little solution into a separate container, test the temperature with your finger or check with a thermometer. It is best to prepare fresh product each time. Saline solution is suitable for use by both children and adults.

    Washing procedure

    How to clean your nose correctly? The following algorithm is suitable for adults:

    1. In case of severe congestion, clean the nose with a handkerchief or napkin and dosed administration of vasoconstrictor drops or sprays (Oxymetazoline, Xylometazoline).
    2. After facilitating nasal breathing, a few minutes later the rinsing is carried out directly. To do this, the patient bends over the sink and draws saline solution into a syringe or syringe without a needle. The tip is inserted shallowly into the nostril towards the top and the inner corner of the eye.
    3. Using gentle pressure, the solution enters the nasal cavity on one side. It should pour out from the other side. Each half of the cavity should be washed 2 to 4 times.

    How to clean the nose if the patient is a child? For small children, saline solutions in the form of drops are suitable, which can be administered 1-2 times into each nostril every hour, unless the instructions or doctor’s prescriptions provide otherwise. If we are talking about saline solution, there is no need to worry about an overdose. When a syringe is used, a solution is also dripped from it.

    Do not insert the tip of the syringe deep into the nose and sharply press the plunger.

    The creation of high pressure creates a risk of rinsing fluid and the contents of the nasal cavity entering the auditory (Eustachian) tube. This causes the development of an inflammatory process directly in the auditory tube and middle ear (eustachitis, tubootitis). Precautions regarding pressure during the procedure are relevant at any age.
