Therapeutic effect

  • Antiviral;
  • Immunostimulating;
  • Detoxification;
  • Antioxidant.

The antiviral effect of the drug is due to its ability to bind to the hemagglutinin protein, which is located on the surface of the viral shell. It is with the help of hemagglutinin that the virus binds to the cells of organs and systems, penetrates them and causes an active course of the infectious-inflammatory process. It is the penetration of viruses into the cells of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract that provokes a runny nose, cough, sore and red throat, as well as symptoms of intoxication, such as fever, chills, headache, general weakness, malaise, etc.

  • Reduces the risk of disease during seasonal epidemics of influenza and ARVI;
  • Reduces the risk of developing complications of influenza and other viral respiratory infections;
  • Makes the course of ARVI and influenza easier;
  • Reduces the frequency of exacerbations of chronic infections (herpes, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.);
  • Reduces the risk of developing infectious complications after surgery;
  • Accelerates recovery from rotavirus infections in children.

"Arbidol": instructions for use for children with dosages by age, analogues of the drug

When a child shows signs of a viral infection, mothers try to give an antiviral drug as quickly as possible: it will help the body fight the disease. One of these drugs is Arbidol for children. The attitude of parents towards it is ambiguous: some try to use the medicine as soon as possible, others do not consider treatment with tablets and syrup necessary. In fact, Arbidol is allowed even for the smallest children, since it has virtually no contraindications or side effects. Detailed instructions will help parents dispel fears regarding Arbidol.

Properties, composition and release forms of the drug

Arbidol is an antiviral drug. It provokes the production of a natural protein responsible for fighting viruses - interferon. Its action is to neutralize as many hostile cells as possible and develop immunity to infection. Children's Arbidol stimulates the activity of magrophages - protective cells. The purpose of the drug is to prevent harmful microbes from settling on healthy tissues.

As a result of treatment with Arbidol, the cyclicity of viral diseases in a child decreases, the recovery process proceeds faster, the immune system gains strength, and intoxication of the body is reduced to zero. The drug promotes the formation of a specific film on cell membranes, which makes them less vulnerable to viruses.

On pharmacy shelves, Arbidol for children is presented in two main forms of release:

  • Tablets of 50, 100, 200 mg are white or cream-colored dragees. Available in blister plates packed in cardboard packaging. The box contains from 10 to 30 tablets.
  • Powder for preparing a suspension, which contains small granules of white or cream color. The prepared suspension has a pleasant fruity aroma and taste of banana or cherry. The undiluted medicinal mixture is in a dark glass container placed in a cardboard package. The kit includes a measuring spoon and instructions for using the drug. The dosage of the active substance in 5 ml of prepared syrup is 25 mg.

Arbidol capsules of 50 mg and 100 mg of the active ingredient have been produced. Available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 pieces. Since the capsules cannot be chewed, this form is not suitable for children under 3 years of age. For children under this age, it is ideal to use the suspension.

The main active ingredient of Arbidol is umifenovir hydrochloride. Additional substances are used for each form:

  • hypermelosis;
  • titanium dioxide;
  • potato starch;
  • polysorbate80;
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • sodium benzoate;
  • sodium chloride;
  • sucrose;
  • flavorings;
  • maltodextrin

Indications for use

According to the instructions, the drug is taken in the following cases:

  • influenza type A and B;
  • acute respiratory viral infection, accompanied by an acute course and complications;
  • insufficiency of the immune system (immunodeficiency);
  • viral infections, including viral pneumonia, bronchitis;
  • Chronical bronchitis;
  • herpetic manifestations;
  • treatment of complications arising after surgery;
  • intestinal infections caused by rotavirus.

The main indications for the use of Arbidol tablets or suspension are acute respiratory viral infections, acute respiratory infections, and influenza. When the temperature rises to several degrees, it is necessary to begin treatment as quickly as possible. The drug is most effective in the first 2 days from the onset of symptoms.

Medical workers in preschool and school institutions advise giving the drug Arbidol as a preventative measure: it will help children stay healthy during periods of mass infection. This point of view has no scientific basis, so use of the medicine for no reason is inadvisable.

It is advisable to take Arbidol during the cold season for those children who regularly visit places with large crowds of people (kindergartens, schools and various clubs)

Instructions for use for children with dosages by age

Like any medicine, Arbidol is taken after consultation with your doctor and careful reading of the instructions. The drug has an age limit (tablets and capsules), the dosage is selected individually. Regardless of the form of the drug, take it a minute before meals with a small amount of water. It is recommended to give the drug at regular intervals and strictly by the hour. So the effectiveness of Arbidol will be slightly higher.

Suspension

Baby suspension with banana or cherry flavor is prepared according to the following algorithm:

  1. pre-boil water, cool;
  2. add 30 ml of boiled warm water to the bottle with powder;
  3. After closing the lid of the bottle, mix the contents thoroughly until smooth;
  4. add another 100 ml of water to the line marked on the container and shake well;
  5. Before each dose, shake the medicine until a homogeneous consistency is formed.

The antiviral drug must be taken strictly according to the instructions

There are special rules that determine at what age the drug should be given and for what diseases. They are reflected in the table:

Pills

The tablet form of the drug is approved for children from three years of age. Previously, it was not advisable to use the medicine in tablets due to the fact that children do not know how to swallow pills on their own, and crushing and chewing is unacceptable. Children over 12 years of age can replace tablets with capsules. A detailed treatment regimen and dosage are given in the table:

Contraindications and possible adverse reactions

It is believed that Arbidol is a drug that has no side effects. At the same time, there is a category of children for whom taking this drug is contraindicated.

The medicine in the form of a suspension is not recommended for children under 2 years of age; tablets and capsules are allowed at the age of 3 years, provided that the child can swallow pills and capsules whole. If the child is under 12 years of age, the use of Arbidol as a prophylactic against severe acute respiratory syndrome is unacceptable.

Children who are allergic to the components of the drug should not take Arbidol. Otherwise, an adverse reaction may occur in the form of itching, redness, peeling of the skin and other manifestations of allergies.

The medicine is used with great caution to treat children with diabetes mellitus and fructose intolerance. Problems with the liver, kidneys, heart and blood vessels are a direct contraindication to antiviral therapy.

The drug is widely used in pediatrics because it has virtually no side effects. Allergies to Arbidol and its components are extremely rare.

Cost and analogues

The cost of Arbidol depends on the pharmacy chain and the region in which the drug is offered for sale. Other factors also influence the price:

  • in Russia there are several pharmaceutical companies producing Arbidol, and each sets its own price;
  • number of pills or capsules in the package (10, 20, 40 pieces).

On average, the price for this antiviral drug varies from 150 to 300 rubles. Some buyers consider this price low, and therefore the drug is ineffective. This is a misconception, since only high-quality raw materials are used for the manufacture of the medicine, including in the production of analogues (Ukraine, Belarus, China). After analyzing how much Arbidol costs in the capital's pharmacies, you will receive the following data:

Parents often wonder if there are analogues of Arbidol with the same effect, but somewhat cheaper. Today, the following drugs are recommended as analogues. Not all of them are cheaper.

Analogs are selected by the treating pediatrician, since a thorough calculation of the dosage is required in each specific case. Parents should pay attention to the color of the packaging. The drug in the red box marked “Maximum” should not be taken by children to treat a viral infection.

The article is good, of course. The doctor will not tell you such details. In general, we ourselves have been using Arbidol recently, although I am generally very skeptical about any kind of antiviral. The doctor prescribed it several times, tried it, and quickly got me back on my feet. I always give syrup to my son.

I don’t see the point in using antiviral drugs. A doctor once suggested that I take Remantadine to prevent ARVI and influenza. But I didn’t notice any effect after two uses—I still got sick.

Suspension "Arbidol for Children": instructions for use

To treat viral diseases, doctors prescribe drugs that can directly affect viruses. One such medicine is Arbidol from the Russian company Pharmstandard-Leksredstva. Especially for children, it is produced in the form of a sweet suspension, which is easy to dose for babies. At what age is it permissible to use this medication and how to give it to a child correctly?

Release form

Arbidol suspension is available in dark glass bottles with a capacity of 125 milliliters, inside of which there is 37 g of powder - a white granular substance with a fruity aroma. After dilution, it forms a white suspension with a cream or yellow tint that smells like fruit. There is a mark on the bottle indicating the level of 100 ml. The bottle comes with instructions and a measuring spoon.

Arbidol is also produced in solid form - in yellow or white gelatin capsules and in white film-coated round tablets. Such drug options contain 50 or 100 mg of the active ingredient. In addition, there is the drug Arbidol Maximum, which is capsules with 200 mg of the active substance.

Compound

The main substance in the Arbidol suspension, which provides this drug with an antiviral effect, is represented by umifenovir hydrochloride in the form of monohydrate. Its content in 5 ml of the finished medicine is 25 mg. Additionally, the medication contains silicon dioxide, starch, sodium chloride and sodium benzoate. For a sweet taste, sucrose, sucralose and maltodextrin were added to the drug, and cherry and banana flavors give the medicine a pleasant smell.

Operating principle

Umifenovir as part of the drug is able to suppress the activity of the following pathogens:

  • Influenza viruses, including highly pathogenic subtypes.
  • Coronaviruses.
  • Rhinoviruses.
  • Adenoviruses.
  • Viruses that cause parainfluenza.
  • Respiratory syncytial viruses.

Taking Arbidol interferes with the fusion of viruses with cell membranes. In addition, this medicine activates the production of interferon and stimulates the cellular response to viral infection. Under its influence, the number of lymphocytes (especially T-helper cells and natural killer cells) increases, and macrophages more actively perform their phagocytic function.

In a sick child, this effect of the drug is manifested by a decrease in the severity of the viral infection and a decrease in its duration. In addition, thanks to the use of Arbidol in suspension, the incidence of complications of an infectious disease is reduced.

Indications

  • For the prevention or treatment of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections.
  • As a means of complex treatment of rotavirus enteritis.
  • To prevent or treat SARS pathology caused by coronaviruses.

The drug is prescribed at the first signs of intoxication, when the child’s body temperature has risen to more than +380 °C. The earlier treatment is started, the greater its effect will be.

At what age is it allowed to take it?

Arbidol in liquid form is contraindicated for children in the first two years of life. At the same time, in children over 2 years of age, the instructions recommend treating influenza, rotavirus infection or ARVI with this remedy. For SARS infection, the drug is used to treat children over 12 years of age, and for prophylactic purposes in children over 6 years of age.

Solid forms of Arbidol are approved for children over three years of age, provided that the baby can swallow them without problems. If there are problems with this, at the age of 3 years and older they continue to give the child the medicine in suspension. Due to the increased dosage, the drug Arbidol Maximum is given to children only from the age of 12.

Contraindications

Arbidol suspension is not prescribed to children who are intolerant to umifenovir or any other ingredient of the drug. Since the composition of this form of the drug includes simple carbohydrates, the drug should not be taken by children with glucose-galactose malabsorption, isomaltase deficiency, fructose intolerance or sucrase deficiency. In addition, the presence of sucrose should be taken into account when prescribing the suspension to a child with diabetes mellitus.

Side effects

Sometimes a child’s body reacts to Arbidol with allergic reactions such as urticaria, skin rash, Quincke’s edema or itchy skin. Anaphylactic reaction to taking the suspension is very rare.

Instructions for use and dosage

The suspension is taken before meals. To prepare the medicine, add about 30 ml of water to the powder or fill the bottle with water to 2/3 of its volume. The water to prepare the solution should be brought to a boil and then cooled. It should be at room temperature when mixed with the powder. After pouring water inside and closing the bottle with a lid, you need to turn the bottle over and then shake it thoroughly several times so that the medicine becomes homogeneous.

After adding more boiled water inside the bottle to the mark, which corresponds to 100 ml of liquid, the bottle is closed again and shaken again. Thorough shaking of the suspension is required before each dose of the drug so that the syrup taken is homogeneous. For dosing, it is recommended to use the measuring spoon that the manufacturer provides with the bottle.

A single dosage for a child is determined depending on his age:

  • Children 2-6 years old are given 10 ml of medication per dose, which corresponds to 50 mg of umifenovir.
  • A child aged six to 12 years requires 100 mg of the active substance per dose, so he is given 20 ml of suspension.
  • A child over 12 years old should drink 40 ml of the drug, that is, at one time he will receive 200 mg of umifenovir. Since at this age you need to immediately swallow 8 scoops of the medicine, it is better to switch to taking solid forms with a higher dosage.

The regimen for taking the suspension depends on the purpose for which the medicine is taken:

  • If the drug is prescribed for prevention during the ARVI epidemic season, it should be given to the child for 3 weeks, twice a day.
  • If the baby has been in contact with a person who has the flu or another acute respiratory viral infection, the suspension is prescribed in a course of days. In this case, the drug should be taken only once a day.
  • For influenza or other viral respiratory tract infections, if there are no complications, the medicine is taken every six hours. This four-time dose is prescribed for 5 days.
  • When infected with rotavirus, a child over 2 years of age is also given the drug four times a day for five days.
  • In order to prevent SARS syndrome in a child over 6 years of age, the suspension is given once a day for a course of 12 to 14 days. To treat such an acute pathology in a child over 12 years of age, a double dose of Arbidol is prescribed, and the duration of therapy is from 8 to 10 days.

If a child misses a dose of medication, the missed dose of suspension should be taken as soon as it was discovered. Further treatment is continued according to the regimen prescribed by the doctor.

Overdose and drug interactions

There is no data on the negative effect of a high dose of suspension on the child’s body, as well as on the incompatibility of the drug with other drugs, in the annotation for the drug.

Terms of sale

Arbidol powder is an over-the-counter drug and is sold in most pharmacies in our country. The average price of one bottle of this medicine is 300 rubles.

Storage conditions and shelf life

Undiluted powder must be stored out of the reach of children until its expiration date, which is 2 years. The unopened bottle should be kept at a temperature below +25 degrees Celsius. Once a suspension has been prepared from the medicine, this liquid form should be used within 10 days, and stored in the refrigerator (at a temperature below +8 degrees). This liquid medicine cannot be frozen.

Reviews

Many mothers speak positively about the suspension, noting that the use of Arbidol from the first days of the disease helped their children fight the runny nose and other symptoms of ARVI, and the period of elevated temperature during treatment with this medication was shortened. In addition, the use of the suspension reduced the risk of complications from influenza.

Parents praise this form of medication for its pleasant taste and ease of dosing. Moms also like that the product is a good preventative against viral infections during the cold season. As for the disadvantages, many parents include the short shelf life of the finished suspension. In addition, there are complaints about the ineffectiveness and high cost of the medication. Some mothers are afraid to give it to their child, confusing it with antibacterial medications or not trusting the manufacturer.

Analogs

You can replace Arbidol after consultation with your doctor with one of the following antiviral medications:

  • Orvirem. This syrup containing rimantadine is used in the treatment of children over one year of age.
  • Amiksin. The basis of such coated tablets is tilorone. The medication is prescribed to children from 7 years of age.
  • Little Amazon. This syrup with an antiviral effect is used in the treatment of children 3 years of age and older. The drug is also available in Amizon tablets, but they should not be given to people under 18 years of age.
  • Isoprinosine. These inosine-based tablets are approved for pediatric use from the age of three.
  • Kagocel. This antiviral drug in tablets is prescribed to children over 3 years of age.
  • Ingavirin. Such capsules can be given to children over 13 years of age for ARVI and influenza.

In addition, in the treatment of ARVI or for the prevention of such diseases in childhood, the pediatrician may prescribe interferon drugs, for example, Viferon or Grippferon. Also, some parents decide to give their child with a viral infection homeopathic remedies (Anaferon, Oscillococcinum, Aflubin, Ergoferon), but most doctors consider them ineffective and do not recommend using them to replace Arbidol.

And now we invite you to watch Doctor Komarovsky’s episode about children’s antiviral drugs, and find out his competent opinion on this matter.

Arbidol tablets and suspension for children: instructions for use, opinions pros and cons

The drug "Arbidol" for children is a drug that has immunostimulating and antiviral effects. In medical practice, this drug has been used for a long time.

This is due to its high efficiency, wide spectrum of action, as well as the ability to combat complications resulting from untimely treatment.

"Arbidol" has a minimum of contraindications and side effects, so it can be used even by the smallest children.

Composition, release form and description

The drug "Arbidol" for children is available in the form of tablets and suspensions. The first ones have a dosage of 50, 100 and 200 mg. The color of the tablets is white or cream.

Sold in blister plates, packed in a cardboard box. "Arbidol" tablets are intended for children who are at least 3 years old.

As for the means for preparing the suspension, in its original form it is a granular powder of cream or white color. The composition has a pleasant fruity smell.

The powder is placed in a dark glass container marked 100 ml and packed in a cardboard box along with an annotation and a measuring spoon.

Manufacturers also took care of safety: the cap located on the bottle is unscrewed by pressing and then twisting clockwise.

After preparation, the suspension becomes yellowish-white with a cherry or banana odor.

The excipients contained in the tablets are:

  • croscarmellose sodium;

Additional components contained in the suspension:

  • sodium benzoate;
  • colloidal sodium dioxide;

    Indications

    According to the instructions for use, the children's drug Arbidol in the form of a suspension (syrup) and tablets is prescribed for the treatment of children with:

    • influenza type A and B in children;
  • acute respiratory syndrome in a severe stage;
  • a condition accompanied by a deficiency of the immune system;

    Indications for use also include herpes and intestinal infections of rotavirus origin in combination with other drugs.

    Contraindications

    • children under 2 years of age (suspension);

    How and after what time does the drug work?

    "Arbidol" has antiviral, anti-intoxication, antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.

    The antiviral effect is characterized by the ability of the drug to combine with the hemagglutinin protein located in the virus envelope.

    It is thanks to hemagglutinin that the virus that has entered the body combines with tissues and organs and causes the development of inflammatory and infectious processes.

    The entry of viruses into the body's systems causes unpleasant symptoms - runny nose, headache, otitis media, sore throat, body aches, weakness, chills and increased body temperature.

    “Arbidol” blocks the protein, due to which the virus stops reproducing and dies. Thus, the drug counteracts the development of infectious and inflammatory processes, instantly blocking viruses that have penetrated even the mucous membranes.

    The immunomodulatory effect of the drug is characterized by the activation of phagocytes, during which the destruction of viruses is carried out, as well as an increase in the release of interferons, which are responsible for the response of the immune system to viral penetration.

    • reduce the risk of developing diseases during seasonal epidemics (influenza, ARVI);
  • reduce the frequency of exacerbations of colds;
  • make the course of the disease mild and practically asymptomatic;
  • reduce the risk of complications;

    The anti-intoxication effect of "Arbidol" is to weaken the symptoms of intoxication - weakness, dizziness, headache, chills, etc.

    Dosage at different ages

    Reviews of children's medicine

    Anna: “I’ve been giving Arbidol tablets to my eldest during cold epidemics for 2 years now.

    I've never gotten sick yet. There was only a slight runny nose. I give the younger one a suspension. Among the disadvantages, one can note a rather bitter taste.”

    Diana: “After returning from kindergarten, the child developed a fever. The next day, unpleasant symptoms followed in the form of a runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, and ear pain.

    In addition, the baby experienced chills, headache and weakness. The doctor prescribed Arbidol for us. All day long they drank 10 ml 4 times a day. The next day the child became stronger.

    His temperature decreased, he felt better and had an appetite. After 5 days, all symptoms, except for the runny nose, disappeared. I'm satisfied with the drug."

    Galina: “Recently our whole family got sick. Only the son remained “safe.” Since I really didn’t want him to suffer the same fate, I decided to buy him Arbidol and give it to him as a preventive measure.

    Take 1 tablet 1 time per day for 2 weeks. Fortunately, the cold passed him by. I am very grateful to Arbidol.”

    This drug has virtually no contraindications or side effects, so it is recommended for use in children over 2 years of age.

    Antiviral drug. Specifically suppresses in vitro influenza viruses A and B (Influenza virus A, B), including highly pathogenic subtypes A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H5N1), as well as other viruses that cause acute respiratory viral infections (coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), rhinovirus (Rhinovirus), adenovirus (Adenovirus), respiratory syncytial virus (Pneumovirus) and parainfluenza virus (Paramyxovirus)). According to the mechanism of antiviral action, it belongs to fusion inhibitors, interacts with the hemagglutinin of the virus and prevents the fusion of the lipid membrane of the virus and cell membranes. It has a moderate immunomodulatory effect and increases the body's resistance to viral infections. It has interferon-inducing activity - in a study on mice, the induction of interferons was noted after 16 hours, and high titers of interferons remained in the blood up to 48 hours after administration. Stimulates cellular and humoral immune responses: increases the number of lymphocytes in the blood, especially T-cells (CD3), increases the number of T-helpers (CD4) without affecting the level of T-suppressors (CD8), normalizes the immunoregulatory index, stimulates the phagocytic function of macrophages and increases the number of natural killer (NK) cells.

    Therapeutic effectiveness for viral infections is manifested in a decrease in the duration and severity of the disease and its main symptoms, as well as in a decrease in the incidence of complications associated with viral infection and exacerbations of chronic bacterial diseases.

    Refers to low-toxic drugs (LD 50 >4 g/kg). Does not have any negative effects on the human body when administered orally in recommended doses.

    Suction and distribution

    Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Cmax in blood plasma when using umifenovir at a dose of 50 mg is achieved after 1.2 hours, at a dose of 100 mg – 1.5 hours .

    Umifenovir is quickly distributed throughout the organs and tissues of the body.

    Metabolism and excretion

    Metabolized in the liver. T 1/2 is h.

    About 40% is excreted unchanged, mainly with bile (38.9%) and in small quantities by the kidneys (0.12%). During the first day, 90% of the dose taken is eliminated.

    For nonspecific prevention and treatment of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections in children and adults

    During an epidemic of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections: children from 6 to 12 years old, children over 12 years old and adults mg 2 times a week for 3 weeks.

    In direct contact with patients with influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections - children 6 to 12 years old, children over 12 years old and adults, mg 1 time per day during the day.

    Treatment of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections

    Children from 6 to 12 years old, children over 12 years old and adults, mg 4 times a day (every 6 hours) for 5 days.

    Complex therapy of acute intestinal infections of rotavirus etiology in children over 6 years of age

    Children from 6 to 12 years old, children over 12 years old, mg 4 times a day (every 6 hours) for 5 days.

    In the complex therapy of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and herpetic infections

    For children from 6 to 12 years of age, children over 12 years of age and adults, mg 4 times a day (every 6 hours) for 5-7 days, then a single dose 2 times a week for 4 weeks.

    Prevention of postoperative complications

    Children from 6 to 12 years old, children over 12 years old and adults mg 2 days before surgery, then on days 2 and 5 after surgery.

    It is necessary to follow the recommended regimen and duration of taking the drug. If you miss taking one dose of the drug, the missed dose should be taken as early as possible and continue taking the drug according to the started regimen.

    Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and machinery

    It does not exhibit central neurotropic activity and can be used in medical practice for preventive purposes in practically healthy individuals of various professions that require increased attention and speed of psychomotor reactions (including transport drivers, operators).

    In animal studies, no harmful effects on pregnancy, embryonic and fetal development, labor or postnatal development were identified.

    The use of Arbidol in the first trimester of pregnancy is contraindicated.

    In the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, Arbidol can be used only for the treatment and prevention of influenza and if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. The benefit/risk ratio is determined by the attending physician.
