Dosage form of Sulfacyl sodium - eye drops 20%: transparent colorless or slightly colored liquid (1, 1.5 or 2 ml each in dropper tubes with a valve, 2 tubes in a cardboard box; 5 and 10 ml each in dropper tubes with a screw neck or dropper bottles, 1 tube/dropper bottle in a cardboard box).

The active ingredient of the drug - sulfacetamide - is a substance from the group of sulfonamides with an antimicrobial bacteriostatic effect. The mechanism of its action is explained by inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, competitive antagonism with para-aminobenzoic acid, as well as the ability to disrupt the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, necessary for the synthesis of pyrimidines and purines.

Sulfacyl sodium is active against gram-negative and gram-positive cocci, Actinomyces israelii, Bacillus anthracis, Chlamydia spp., Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Yersinia pestis, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella spp., Toxoplasma gondii.

Pharmacokinetics

After instillation, maximum concentrations are reached within 30 minutes and are approximately: 3 mg/ml in the cornea, 0.5 mg/ml in the anterior chamber fluid, 0.1 mg/ml in the iris. A small amount (no more than 0.5 mg/ml) remains in the tissues of the eyeball for 3–4 hours. In case of damage to the corneal epithelium, the penetration of the drug increases.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, sodium sulfacyl is used as part of complex therapy for the following diseases:

  • purulent corneal ulcer;
  • blepharitis and conjunctivitis in children and adults;
  • blenorrhea in newborns (treatment and prevention);
  • chlamydial and gonorrheal eye diseases in adults.

Contraindications

Sulfacyl sodium eye drops are contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to their components.

Instructions for use of sodium sulfacyl: method and dosage

The drug is used topically, instilled into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye.

  • conjunctivitis in adults and children: on the first day, 1-2 drops every hour, in the next 3-4 days the number of instillations is reduced to 5-6 per day;
  • blepharitis in children and adults: at the beginning of treatment - 1-2 drops up to 8 times a day, as the condition improves, the number of instillations is reduced to 3-4 per day. The course of treatment is 3–5 days;
  • purulent corneal ulcer: 1-2 drops 5-6 times a day for 5-7 days;
  • chlamydial and gonorrheal eye diseases in adults: 1-2 drops up to 6 times a day for a course of 4-6 weeks. If positive dynamics are noted, each subsequent week the number of instillations is gradually reduced;
  • prevention of blenorrhea in newborns: 2 drops into the conjunctival sac of each eye immediately after birth, then 2 drops at 2-hour intervals throughout the day;
  • treatment of blenorrhea: 2 drops every 1–2 hours during the first day, then every 3 hours. The course of treatment is 2 weeks.

Side effects

After instillation of the drug, the following undesirable reactions may occur: burning, itching, pain in the eyes, lacrimation, transient blurred vision.

In some cases, allergic reactions are possible.

Pharmacological properties.

Sulfacyl sodium has a bacteriostatic effect against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria - streptococci, pneumococci, gonococci, Escherichia coli, chlamydia, actinomycetes. The mechanism of action of the drug is due to competitive antagonism with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, which leads to disruption of the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, necessary for the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine bases. As a result, the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) of bacterial cells is disrupted.

Penetrates into the tissues of the eye, where it exerts its specific antibacterial effect. It acts predominantly locally, but part of the drug is absorbed through the inflamed conjunctiva and enters the systemic bloodstream.

When applied topically, the maximum concentration (Cmax) of sulfonamides in the cornea (about 3 mg/ml), anterior chamber fluid (about 0.5 mg/ml) and iris (about 0.1 mg/ml) is achieved 30 minutes after instillation. A small amount (less than 0.5 mg/ml) of sulfacetamide remains in the tissues of the eyeball for 3-4 hours. If the corneal epithelium is damaged, the penetration of sulfonamides increases.

Sulfacyl sodium drops (sulfacetamide) are used to treat blepharitis, conjunctivitis, purulent corneal ulcers and other eye diseases, for the treatment and prevention of blenorrhea and chlamydial eye diseases.

Sulfacetamide belongs to the group of sulfonamides (antimicrobial agents). For conjunctivitis, the drug has a bacteriostatic and antimicrobial effect, is active against gram-positive and gram-negative cocci, Shigella spp., Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio cholerae, Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Chlamidia spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Actinomyces israelii, Escherichia coli .

Albucid (Sulfacetamide) eye drops 20% or 30% are available in polyethylene bottles of 5 or 10 ml.

— active ingredient: sulfacetamide (20 mg in a 20% solution, 30 mg in a 30% solution / per 1 ml);

— excipients: water, sodium thiosulfate, hydrochloric acid.

Refers to antibacterial and antimicrobial drugs from the sulfonamide group. Albucid has a bacteriostatic effect (prevents the proliferation of microorganisms). The drug is especially effective in the fight against E. coli, pathogenic cocci (streptococci, staphylococci, gonococci, pneumococci), chlamydia, and actinomycetes.

It dissolves well in water, acts predominantly locally, freely penetrates into the tissues and fluids of the eye, and is absorbed to a small extent into the systemic bloodstream through the inflamed conjunctiva.

Indications for use:

Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the anterior parts of the eye:

- purulent corneal ulcers

- gonorrheal eye diseases

It can be used in newborns to prevent purulent inflammation of the eyes.

Hypersensitivity to sulfonamide drugs.

The dosage depends on the degree of inflammation. For acute inflammation, instill 2-3 drops of Albucid (Sulfacetamide) into each eye up to 5-6 times a day. As you improve, the dosage is reduced. The drug is used until complete recovery.

To prevent purulent inflammation of the eyes (blennorrhea) in newborns, Albucid is instilled into each eye, 2 drops immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.

With prolonged use of Albucid (Sulfacetamide), irritation and redness of the eyes and eyelids, increased lacrimation, itching, burning, and swelling are possible. In such cases, a less concentrated solution should be used (for example, 20% instead of 30%).

If symptoms such as lacrimation, itching, burning, swelling, irritation of the eyes and eyelids occur, you should reduce the number of Albucid instillations per day and switch to a less concentrated solution.

Interaction with other drugs:

Albucid eye drops are not compatible with medications containing silver salts.

The simultaneous use of Albucid (Sulfacetamide) with local anesthetics (tetracaine, procaine) weakens its antiseptic effect.

The drug should be stored in a dark place at a temperature of 8-15°C. After opening, the shelf life does not exceed 1 month.
