Folk remedies for chronic runny nose perform the main function of eliminating pathology without causing side effects.
Types of chronic runny nose
The well-known saying that a treated runny nose goes away in 7 days, and an untreated runny nose in a week, does not take into account the danger in which even a slight runny nose can become chronic. And this, in turn, threatens the emergence of a number of serious pathologies, including:
With chronic rhinitis, a person is worried about nasal congestion, increased formation of mucus in the throat, and possibly an increase in temperature. This disease can be a consequence of an acute infection, especially if factors such as a tendency to allergic reactions, drinking alcohol, taking certain medications, hormonal changes and stress contribute to this.
Chronic runny nose is usually treated at home. In the most severe cases, a visit to an ENT doctor is necessary. A specialist may prescribe the use of antibacterial ointments, instillation of antiseptic medications and physiotherapeutic procedures.
It is easier to cure a chronic runny nose if you use herbal medicine and folk recipes in combination with traditional medicine.
Traditional medicine also helps well in the treatment of sinusitis, the main symptom of which is prolonged nasal congestion.
In addition, sinusitis is characterized by the presence of yellow-green nasal discharge. The bacteria that cause them can enter the maxillary sinuses and lead to the development of sinusitis, otitis media and other dangerous pathologies.
Decoctions and infusions for the treatment of chronic runny nose
Since ancient times, decoctions and infusions of medicinal plants have been used to treat chronic rhinitis. As a rule, all components of mixtures can be purchased at a regular pharmacy. One of the most popular remedies for the treatment of prolonged nasal congestion is a decoction of peppermint, which is easy to prepare at home.
To prepare the decoction you will need 1 tbsp. l. dry crushed leaf of the plant, pour 500 ml of boiling water and leave for 60 minutes. Then the broth is filtered and taken 3-4 times a day, 125 ml. The therapeutic effect of the product is due to the presence of menthol in mint leaves, as well as its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In order to enhance the effect, you can rinse your nose together with taking the decoction orally. For this purpose, not only mint decoction can be used, but also preparations from elecampane and licorice root, viburnum bark and wild rosemary herb. Usually, sanitation of the nasal cavity is carried out 2 times a day - in the morning and before bedtime. The evening procedure is extremely important if a stuffy nose interferes with proper sleep.
Traditional healers have developed a recipe for an infusion that cleanses the nose and throat well of mucus and secretions. To prepare the product you will need the following ingredients:
All components are crushed and mixed in equal proportions. Then 2 tbsp. l. the mixture is poured with 2 glasses of boiling water and infused for about half an hour. The infusion is consumed 125 ml 15 minutes before meals 3-4 times a day. According to healers, after a day there will be no trace of rhinitis.
To speed up the removal of mucus from the throat and nose, you will need viburnum, which has excellent antibacterial properties. Mix 1 glass of berry juice and 1 glass of liquid honey, the resulting medicine is consumed 3 times a day, 1 tbsp. l.
Recipes for rinsing and instilling noses
An excellent remedy for eliminating chronic runny nose is sea water. Experts believe that seven days spent at sea is enough to relieve the symptoms of the pathology. But you can use this treatment method without leaving your home. To do this, you need to prepare a saline solution consisting of 1 glass of warm water and 1 tsp. table or sea salt.
The solution is used to rinse. The algorithm of actions is as follows: you need to pour a little solution into your palm, then the liquid is drawn in through one nostril and pushed out of the nasal cavity with the other. To enhance the effect, you can add 0.5 tsp to the liquid. tinctures of calendula, propolis or eucalyptus. Beetroot decoction has a similar effect.
Chronic runny nose that accompanies sinusitis can be treated with a solution that includes: 1 glass of water, 1 tsp. salt, 0.5 tsp. soda and 5 drops of iodine.
You can use garlic oil for nose drops. The preparation is prepared as follows: 1 head of garlic is peeled, crushed and immersed in 0.5 cups of vegetable oil. Then the oil is heated in a water bath until it boils. The finished mixture is infused for 24 hours and used as an ointment and drops.
In addition, you can use a honey-based product for nasal instillation. You will need: 1/3 tsp. liquid honey, 1.5 tsp. boiled water and 1 tbsp. l. freshly squeezed beet juice. Mix the ingredients and apply 7 drops into both nostrils every 2 hours throughout the day.
In the absence of honey, chronic runny nose can be cured using camphor oil or oil with St. John's wort extract. Camphor oil is used to lubricate the nasal passages and temples 2 times a day, and St. John's wort oil is instilled 2-3 times a day, 2 drops into each nostril.
Kalanchoe and aloe are indoor plants that are often found on window sills in city dwellers' apartments. The medicinal properties of the first are as close as possible to aloe, so the juice of the plant can also be used to treat chronic nasal congestion. The method of therapy using both plants is very simple: squeeze a small amount of juice from the leaves and drip it into the nose. Usually, 3 drops of Kalanchoe juice and 5 drops of aloe juice are dripped into each nostril.
For persistent colds and nasal congestion, you can use propolis tincture. You need to take 1 tsp. tinctures of propolis 10%, camphor and sunflower oils, place in a dark bottle and shake thoroughly. A runny nose goes away if the resulting infusion is dripped into each nostril, 5 drops at least 3 times a day for 7 days. After a break of 3 days, treatment can be repeated.
Other recipes for curing chronic runny nose
In ancient folk remedies you can find simple and effective ways to get rid of chronic nasal congestion, which can still be used today. So, to cure pathology, it is recommended to inhale smoke from a smoldering cracker or piece of cotton wool. The procedure is carried out first with one or the other nostril, and you need to inhale the smoke very deeply - until you cry. 1-2 procedures can eliminate mucus secretion.
If a chronic runny nose is not accompanied by purulent inflammatory processes characteristic of sinusitis, ordinary millet porridge can be used in its treatment. This method shows especially high effectiveness when used in children. You will need to cook some hard millet porridge and put it in a linen bag. The latter is applied to the nose and the area of the maxillary sinuses.
For the same purpose, hot chicken eggs, hard-boiled and wrapped in linen or cotton cloth, bags of hot salt or clean sand are used. They are applied to the painful area and held until it cools. Typically, procedures are carried out once a day before bedtime.
To prevent rhinitis, it is recommended to use laundry soap. They lather the finger with it and lubricate the nasal passages well. If you carry out the procedure 3 times a day, not only will the existing runny nose go away, but a new one will not appear.
Proper use of traditional methods of treating chronic runny nose will help you forget about the disease for a long time, which causes constant inconvenience both during sleep and while awake.

Treatment of chronic runny nose in adults is selected individually for each patient, depending on the form and cause of the disease. Can be used: pharmaceuticals, traditional methods, rinsing, massage, inhalation physiotherapy.
Treatment with pharmaceutical medications
Pharmacy medicines are represented by antiviral, antibacterial and herbal preparations.
Antiviral drugs are used when chronic runny nose in adults occurs due to colds and viral diseases. Treatment with them is advisable at the onset of the disease. These medications prevent the effects of viruses on the body and activate the immune system.
The most commonly used drugs are:
- Arbidol. Available in capsules, tablets and suspensions. The composition includes the active substance umifenovir. During the acute phase of the disease, Arbidol is taken 4 times a day for 5 days. The cost of the drug is from 248 rubles.

- Mupirocin is an antibacterial ointment that is applied to the nasal mucosa 3 times a day. The course of treatment is from 5 to 7 days. Price from 300 rub.
Antibacterial drugs have a lot of contraindications and side effects
Only a specialist can prescribe such remedies!
Herbal preparations are the safest pharmaceutical medicines for the treatment of chronic runny nose, both in adults and children. They contain essential oils and natural ingredients that relieve swelling in the nasal cavity and expand the passages.
The most famous herbal pharmaceutical products:
- Pinosol - drops of plant origin, which include: pine oil, mint oil, eucalyptus oil. The drug is used 3-6 times a day. Price from 184 rubles.
Herbal nasal drops
- Sinupret. The composition is an aqueous-alcohol solution with the following plant components: gentian root, primrose flowers, sorrel herb, elderberry flowers, verbena herbs.
If chronic rhinitis is caused by allergies, it is necessary to take antihistamines. When a runny nose is a consequence of disorders in the body, the underlying disease must also be treated.
Traditional methods of treatment
Traditional methods of treatment can only be used when the disease is fairly mild. This is the cheapest way to get rid of chronic runny nose in adults and children.
Treatment of chronic runny nose with spices
Funds for this type of treatment are always easy to find at hand:
- Garlic. Grind a small amount and pour boiling water. Let it brew and drop it into your nose several times a day.
- Mustard powder - pour into socks at night or add to a foot bath.
- Kalanchoe juice - place a few drops in each nostril.
- You can use tar laundry soap. It is necessary to thoroughly soap your finger and rub it on each half of the nose from the inside.
- Celandine juice – instill 2 drops 3 times a day.
- Calendula or eucalyptus leaves. It is necessary to prepare an infusion and sniff it through your nose 2 times a day.
Leaves of plants suitable for medicinal decoction
- Boric acid, glycerin and alcohol. Take 1 teaspoon of each component, mix and also inhale through your nose.
- Onion. It needs to be cut, add 1 tbsp. spoon of honey, pour warm water over the whole mixture. Place 3-5 drops into each nostril 3 times a day.
- Camphor oil – instill 3 drops 3 times a day.
You can also instill peach, fir, olive and vaseline oil into your nose.
Nasal rinses: pros and cons, cautions
Nasal lavage is actively used to treat rhinitis. This procedure helps clear the nose of secretions, relieve swelling and make breathing easier.
The rinsing solution can be purchased ready-made at a pharmacy or prepared at home. Pharmaceutical products consist of sea water and sodium chloride. At home, salt is most often used to rinse the nose. You can also use herbal solutions, beet juice and furatsilin.
Saline nasal rinse
For the procedure of infusing liquid into the nose, special devices are used, a teapot, a syringe and a syringe. You need to rinse each nostril in turn, so that the liquid comes out through the second nostril. The solution must be introduced gradually. After completing the procedure, you must blow your nose thoroughly.
The rinsing solution should be warm and at a comfortable temperature
The advantage of this method of treating chronic runny nose is that it is safe. It can be used by adults, pregnant women and children. However, this method also has a disadvantage - in advanced stages of the disease, it can only be an addition to treatment.
Nasal rinsing procedure
There are also limitations to this procedure. It cannot be performed with a completely stuffy nose, since it can carry the infection into the ear canal. Washing is also contraindicated if there are tumors in the nose and a tendency to bleeding. For people with a deviated septum, this procedure may not be helpful.
Inhalations
Another auxiliary method for treating chronic runny nose is inhalation. They moisturize the nasal mucosa and soften secretions. Pharmacies offer a special device for inhalation - a nebulizer, which consists of a face mask and a container into which the solution is poured. You can also do inhalations at home without this device.
The oldest method of home inhalation is to breathe steam over potatoes. You can also use herbal infusions and essential oils. Inhalations should not be done when body temperature rises.
Massage
Massaging the nose with a runny nose will significantly alleviate the patient’s condition. The principle of its action is to influence certain points that are responsible for blood circulation.
At high temperatures, massage is contraindicated
The massage is performed with clean and warm hands. You need to make light rotational movements clockwise. The massage begins with the wings of the nose, then moves to the area between the upper lip and nose, ending with massaging the tip of the nose.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy includes a number of thermal procedures, due to which blood circulation in the nasal cavity increases, blood vessels dilate, swelling decreases and the mucous membrane quickly recovers.
Physiotherapy method - laser treatment
The following procedures are used:
Any treatment of chronic runny nose in adults should be carried out under the supervision of a doctor!
Lifestyle change
When long-term treatment of chronic rhinitis does not produce tangible results and the disease returns, you should think about changing your lifestyle. It is necessary to reconsider your diet: include a lot of vegetables and fruits, give up junk food and fast food.
Vitamins are necessary at any time of the year
It is also necessary to regularly strengthen the immune system. Hardening and contrast showers help in the treatment of chronic runny nose. You should give up bad habits.
Bath against runny nose
The bath is a pleasant way to treat chronic runny nose, which is in great demand among adults. The healing effect is achieved through thermal exposure and warming. It will be useful to pour herbal infusions onto the stones and inhale them. The bath has a positive effect on the entire body and strengthens the immune system. During the acute phase of the disease, you cannot visit the bathhouse.
Possible consequences of chronic rhinitis
An incompletely cured runny nose, improper treatment or lack thereof, can lead to complications.
Don't let your nose get worse until complications arise.
New diseases may arise:
To avoid these consequences, you need to consult a doctor in time and not self-medicate.
Will prevention help?
Any disease is easier to prevent than to treat. It is very important to take preventive measures for the occurrence of chronic runny nose. To do this, you need to treat rhinitis well, strengthen your immune system, especially in the cold season, lead a healthy lifestyle, monitor your diet and give up bad habits.
Fresh air is the best cure for colds
It is also important to undergo all necessary examinations on time and not to ignore the symptoms of an upcoming disease. As a preventative measure, it is good to use folk remedies.
By taking preventive measures, you can avoid long and grueling treatment.

Chronic rhinitis - symptoms and comprehensive treatment
The chronic form of catarrhal rhinitis can be a continuation of poor-quality treatment of the acute form of rhinitis or become a consequence of the introduction of microbes deep into the mucous membrane, which causes solid destructive changes in the membrane, as well as weakening the immunological protective function of the body. And in some cases, the patient experiences an allergic reaction of the mucous membrane.
In this article we will look at all the nuances of chronic rhinitis, its causes, symptoms and current treatment methods in adults.
Causes
What it is? The effectiveness of treatment for chronic rhinitis depends on whether the root cause of the disease is correctly identified. Chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa can be caused by the following predisposing factors:
- diseases of the kidneys, heart and vascular system;
- deviated nasal septum;
- adenoids;
- sinusitis;
- occupational hazards;
- smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction;
- dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
- bacterial, viral, fungal infection;
- sinus diseases;
- nasal injury;
- volatile toxic compounds - vapors of sulfuric acid, mercury;
- irritating effects of external factors - dust, smoke, cold, dry air.
The most common allergens that cause allergic rhinitis are:
- Vegetables - dry leaves, hay, mold and, of course, pollen from flowering plants: trees (birch, hazel, aspen, etc.), weeds and meadow grasses (ragweed, dandelion, wormwood, hedgehog grass, timothy, etc.), cereals (rye , corn, etc.).
- Household – house, library and hotel dust, dust mites (present in upholstered furniture, carpets, mattresses, soft toys, etc.), hair and dander of cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters and other animals; feathers and down of pillows and blankets; dry food for fish and animals; cockroaches and rodents, their excrement and scales; mold spores, etc.
- Chemical - industrial chemicals, latex, rubber and plastic products, washing powders and detergents, cosmetics and perfumes.
Often chronic rhinitis occurs after acute rhinitis.
Symptoms of chronic rhinitis
To know how to cure chronic rhinitis, you need to correctly determine the cause of its occurrence. Otherwise, the treatment will not be effective and may worsen the course of the disease. The symptoms of chronic rhinitis will help in making the correct diagnosis; from them you can determine what type of rhinitis it is.
Let's consider all types of runny nose in adults:
- Vasomotor runny nose (rhinitis vasomotorica), depending on the predominance of one or another symptom, can be a hypersecretory form, when the main complaint is significant nasal discharge; vasodilator (the leading symptom is nasal congestion) and combined (vasodilator-hypersecretory) forms, when the patient is bothered by both significant nasal discharge and difficulty in nasal breathing. The allergic form can be seasonal or permanent.
- Atrophic chronic. Symptoms: thinning of the nasal mucosa, expansion of the nasal passages, a feeling of dryness in the nose, secretion of thick mucus, the formation of crusts on the mucous membrane, difficulty breathing through the nose, impaired sense of smell. When removing crusts from the mucous membrane, slight bleeding or an ulcer may form.
- Chronic catarrhal - characterized by patient complaints of constant mucous discharge from the nose and periodic difficulty in nasal breathing with alternating blockage of one or the other half of the nose. Anterior rhinoscopy revealed hyperemia of the mucous membrane with a cyanotic tint, edema, and the presence of mucous discharge, especially at the bottom of the nasal cavity. After lubricating the nasal mucosa with vasoconstrictor solutions, a significant decrease in the volume of the tissues of the lower and middle turbinates occurs, which indicates the presence of false hypertrophy, i.e. swelling.
- Chronic hypertrophic - characterized by hyperplasia of the mucous membrane, often involving the periosteum and bone tissue of the turbinates and can be diffuse and limited in form. Most often, growth and thickening of the mucous membrane occurs on the inferior nasal concha, less often on the middle one in places where cavernous tissue is localized.
- Allergic - manifested by watery mucus discharge from the nose with itching, burning, and bouts of sneezing. The causes of allergic rhinitis are usually: house dust, mites living in house dust, tobacco smoke, flakes of skin or animal hair, fungal spores, cobwebs, etc. It can be year-round.
- Ozena (ogaepa) is a severe form of atrophic process in the nose, spreading both to the mucous membrane and to the bone walls of the nasal cavity and turbinates with the production of quickly drying discharge with a strong specific, unpleasant odor.
In the absence of adequate treatment, rhinitis can lead to complications such as sinusitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps, and inflammation of the middle ear.
How to treat chronic rhinitis
The optimal way to treat chronic forms of rhinitis is complex. This may include the following methods:
- drug treatment;
- physiotherapeutic procedures;
- surgical intervention;
- use of folk remedies.
Depending on the form of chronic rhinitis, the symptoms and treatment regimen in adults will differ:
- For exacerbation of chronic rhinitis, magnetic and laser therapy and treatment with homeopathic medicines are widely used.
- For atrophic rhinitis, drugs are used that can improve the trophism of the mucous membrane.
- Manifestations of allergic rhinitis are eliminated with the help of antihistamines, vasoconstrictors and hormonal agents.
- Laser therapy, cryodestruction, radio wave surgery and other methods are used to treat vasomotor rhinitis.
- For catarrhal rhinitis, local antibacterial treatment is recommended depending on the results of bacteriological culture of the discharge.
- For hypertrophic rhinitis, surgical intervention under local anesthesia will be required.
- Modern medicine uses a bloodless method to remove areas of the mucous membrane - a laser beam.
At the first signs of a runny nose, it is necessary to ensure mental and physical rest, drink plenty of fortified drinks, and avoid hypothermia and overheating. Clean the nasal passages carefully to avoid irritation of the inflamed nasal mucosa. Dried crusts should be softened and carefully removed with a cotton swab dipped in water.
Drug treatment
It involves the prescription of vasoconstrictor drops, ointments with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects, astringents (colargol solution). At elevated temperatures, antipyretic and antiviral drugs are prescribed.
If hard crusts form, softening sprays and drops, usually oil or salt based, can be used. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics depending on the clinical picture.
Physiotherapy
Treatment of rhinitis in adults is carried out using the following physiotherapeutic procedures:
- treatment with ultraviolet rays;
- UHF treatment;
- warming up using foot baths;
- inhalation of medicinal aerosols using a nebulizer using special solutions of antibiotics, saline, phytotherapeutic and other groups of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents.
Physiotherapy is carried out for 8-12 days as prescribed by a doctor, which depends on the stage of the disease.
Spa treatment
Spa treatment is indicated (Anapa, Borovoe, Vladivostok resort area, Gelendzhik group of resorts, Kuryi, Leningrad resort area, Yumatovo), balneotherapy (Golovinka, Kislovodsk, Lazarevskoye, Nalchik, Shusha, Shivanda) and mud therapy (Nalchik, Pyatigorsk, Sadgorod).
Surgery
Today, the following surgical treatment methods are used:
- Ultrasonic disintegration of turbinates;
- Radio wave disintegration of the nasal turbinates;
- Electrocautery (cauterization using an electrode);
- Cryotherapy (cryodestruction of the inferior turbinates);
- CO2 laser destruction;
- Conchotomy, or removal of the posterior ends of the inferior turbinates;
- Chemocaustics, or cauterization of the turbinates with tri-chloroacetic acid (effective for catarrhal rhinitis and uncomplicated forms of vasomotor rhinitis).
Surgical treatment of rhinitis is aimed at reducing the size of the turbinates using various physical factors, thereby making breathing easier for the patient.
Folk remedies
The use of folk remedies has a positive effect:
- instilling drops of aloe or Kalanchoe juice;
- local treatment with cotton swabs soaked in a decoction of bay leaves;
- carrying out inhalations over boiled potatoes, inhaling the smell of onions and garlic;
- compresses with a warm decoction of bay leaves on the nose and forehead;
- rinsing the nose with the juice of onions, beets, carrots, decoctions of anti-inflammatory herbs (chamomile, calendula);
- warm mustard foot baths.
In general, treatment of chronic runny nose is a long and painstaking process that requires medical supervision. It is up to the patient to minimize risk factors and prevent another exacerbation.
Prevention
Disease prevention measures are very important. To prevent chronic rhinitis you need:
- treat all ENT pathologies under the supervision of a doctor;
- exclude the influence of allergens and irritants;
- correct abnormalities in the structure of the nose;
- regularly rinse your nose with saline solutions;
- stop smoking, alcohol;
- do not overuse nasal drops;
- lead a healthy lifestyle, strengthen your immune system and harden yourself;
- exercise.
It is important for workers in hazardous industries to take measures to individually protect their noses, purify the air, and if they are prone to developing chronic rhinitis with complications, it is better to think about changing their occupation.

Chronic runny nose - its types, causes, how to treat
There is an opinion that a runny nose, treat it or not, it will disappear on its own in a week. But if a week or two has already passed, and your nose still can’t breathe, what’s the matter? Let's look at the main causes of chronic runny nose.
The first reason is infection.
A banal infection can become protracted if it is combined with unfavorable factors:
- inhaling cold or too dry air,
- dustiness, atmospheric pollution, tobacco smoke,
- deviated nasal septum (congenital or due to injury),
- chronic diseases leading to circulatory disorders (heart defects, emphysema).
There are three main forms of chronic infectious rhinitis:
Simple chronic rhinitis
Symptoms
Nasal congestion appears periodically, especially noticeable when lying on your back. If you turn on your side, the half of your nose that is located below is stuffy.
Nasal discharge is quite profuse, light or greenish.
When examining the nose, the otolaryngologist sees uniform swelling and redness of the mucous membrane.
Vasoconstrictor drops effectively restore breathing: phenylephrine (Vibrocil), xylometazoline (Otrivin, Galazolin), oxymetazoline (Nazivin, Nazol), naphazoline (Naphthyzin, Sanorin).
Treatment
Despite the fact that Nazivin or Galazolin helps you breathe freely for 7–8 hours, you should not get carried away with them. After 3–5 days, addiction to the drugs begins, so the effective dose becomes larger, the duration of action becomes shorter, and it becomes more and more difficult to cancel the vasoconstrictor drug.
It is advisable to visit an otolaryngologist, who will determine which drops for chronic runny nose are suitable in this case: with an antibiotic (for example, Isofra), astringents (Protargol), cauterizing agents (silver nitrate). Perhaps mucolytics (inhalations with ACC) and physiotherapy ("Luch", electrophoresis, quartz tube) will be effective.
An ancient folk remedy for chronic runny nose - rinsing the nose with sea water - has become more accessible thanks to a large selection of sprays with isotonic and hypertonic solutions - Aqualor, Aquamaris, Dolphin. Plant extracts with an anti-inflammatory effect are often added to their composition: eucalyptus, aloe, chamomile.
There are a number of drugs for inhalation with a nebulizer for a runny nose. If treatment does not have an effect, the doctor may suggest surgery: cryodestruction, ultrasonic disintegration, laser photodestruction or lower submucosal conchotomy.
Chronic hypertrophic rhinitis
Symptoms
The nose is constantly stuffy, vasoconstrictor drops hardly help. Because of this, the patient almost does not smell and complains of headaches and hearing loss. The voice takes on a nasal character. On examination, the nasal passages are narrowed, the mucous membrane is bluish-pink.
Treatment
Only surgical treatment - ultrasound, laser or cryodestruction of the inferior nasal concha - will provide an effect. Sometimes they resort to partial removal of the inferior turbinate. This operation is called conchotomy. In addition, the concha can be shifted outward, expanding the nasal passage - this technique is called lateralization.
Chronic atrophic rhinitis
Symptoms
The feeling of dryness in the nose is disturbing, nosebleeds often occur, and the sense of smell deteriorates. Dry crusts that are difficult to remove accumulate in the nose. The doctor will see this dried thick secretion on the pale matte mucous membrane and wide nasal passages during examination.
Treatment
Dry crusts are washed with alkaline solutions. Courses of alkaline-oil inhalations are periodically prescribed. Oil solutions are also recommended for instillation into the nose: vitamins A and E, rosehip oil solution. If you are not allergic to bee products, it is possible to treat chronic runny nose with propolis (mixed with olive oil). Aloe and Kalanchoe juices help reduce dryness and relieve irritation.
The second reason is allergies (allergic rhinitis)
Symptoms
Seasonal runny nose, or hay fever, is easily recognized: it coincides with the period of flowering of trees or grasses; lacrimation, sneezing or profuse rhinorrhea haunt the patient throughout the season and disappear without a trace when pollen disappears in the air. Another thing is year-round allergic rhinitis associated with household allergens. Recognizing what caused it—a feather pillow, a cat, or chocolate with nuts—is not always easy. A laryngologist will suspect the allergic nature of a runny nose based on complaints and examination: the nasal mucosa is sharply swollen, but not bright red, as with a normal runny nose, but pale bluish. An allergist will perform specific skin or nasal allergen tests to determine what to watch out for first.
Treatment
In the acute period, the use of vasoconstrictor drugs is acceptable for a short period of time. At the same time, local antiallergic drugs are prescribed: antihistamines (Allergodil, Cromoglin) or glucocorticosteroids (Nasonex, Flixonase). The effect of these drugs is not so fast, but is aimed at suppressing the allergic reaction, therefore, they do not just relieve symptoms, but prevent their development.
If it is possible to identify the allergen that causes rhinorrhea, it is possible to carry out specific desensitization: small doses of the allergen are administered to the patient in a course, the body gets used to them and stops responding with a violent reaction.
Prevention
Often the factors that provoke an allergic rhinitis are not one, but a dozen, or they cannot be identified at all. Therefore, the most reliable method of prevention is to create a hypoallergenic environment at home: remove woolen blankets, feather pillows, and soft trinkets. An air purifier is purchased and wet cleaning is carried out regularly, but without strong-smelling detergents. Most likely, you will have to give up the idea of having a pet. A diet may be required. Keeping a food diary will allow you to determine which foods provoke an exacerbation of the disease. It is quite possible that chocolate and nuts are well tolerated, but dairy products, even in the form of cheese, cause a severe runny nose.
Reason three: neurovegetative dysfunction (vasomotor rhinitis)
Symptoms
Nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing due to any provoking factor: cold air, stress, overwork, dust or tobacco smoke in the air, strong odor. Most often, there are other symptoms of vegetative-vascular dystonia. Sometimes the cause of a runny nose is a hormonal imbalance - with rhinitis during pregnancy or hypothyroidism. Rhinoscopically, the picture resembles allergic rhinitis: pale bluish mucosa, but there is no swelling or pronounced discharge.
Treatment
The main goal is to normalize the functioning of the nervous system: good sleep, daily walks, and a balanced diet will reduce the body’s reactivity. In addition, many people notice that while walking, nasal congestion practically disappears. Acupuncture can be used. But frequent and prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drops will only worsen the situation.
Antihistamines and glucocorticosteroids are used for treatment - in the form of nasal sprays or injections into the submucosa.
Various physiotherapy techniques are also used - irrigation with saline solutions, electrophoresis of calcium or zinc in the nose.
If conservative treatment methods do not produce results, surgery can help restore nasal breathing and sense of smell. Preferred, of course, are more gentle interventions: submucosal vasotomy, ultrasound or laser conchotomy.
Assessing the severity of the disease and suggesting the optimal treatment method is the task of an experienced otolaryngologist. But the rational behavior of the patient (quitting smoking, hardening, a reasonable approach to the use of vasoconstrictor drugs) will significantly improve the results.

Chronic runny nose: causes and treatment
Chronic runny nose in specialized literature is called rhinitis. At the same time, experts can identify several types of this disease from the usual allergic to pathological, associated with the development of oncological tumors. Treatment of chronic runny nose is best carried out under the supervision of the attending physician, as he can quickly find out the cause of the pathology and predict the most successful therapy. If it is impossible to contact a specialist, you can use several effective treatment methods, which may include traditional and non-traditional remedies.
Chronic runny nose: causes and treatment
Causes of chronic runny nose
Among the main causes of persistent rhinitis are the following:
- viral infection of the nasopharynx and other respiratory sections;
- frequent exposure to constant temperature changes from high to low and vice versa;
- frequent consumption of spicy foods, including a variety of fast foods;
- overgrown adenoids, in which case severe breathing problems may occur during sleep;
- exposure to external irritants, including sun, wind, frost, rain;
- irritation of the mucous membrane of the respiratory system by tobacco smoke;
- entry of foreign objects into the nose and sinuses;
- strong hormonal changes in the body;
- curvature of the nasal septum, which can be caused by trauma or congenital pathology;
- nasal injuries that could lead to fractures, frequent bleeding and cracks;
- allergic reactions to external irritants;
- the appearance of polyps in the nose and adjacent tissues;
- the appearance of cancerous tumors in the nasal sinuses;
- vasomotor cyclic rhinitis.
Attention! It is very important to establish the exact cause of a runny nose, since the use of antihistamines and vasoconstrictor drops for polyps and tumors can blur the diagnosis and lead to a noticeable deterioration in health.
