General information
Ear drops have three main components:
- Framycetin sulfate. The substance has a strong antibacterial effect on many pathogenic microorganisms. An important feature of the substance is that resistance to it in microorganisms develops very slowly, which means its use will bring good results;
- gramicidin. It is an antibiotic that has a bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect, thereby enhancing the effect of framycetin sulfate;
- dexamethasone. The substance belongs to glucocorticosteroid drugs. Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects.
In addition to the main components, ear drops called Sofradex contain excipients:
- citric acid;
- distilled water;
- methylated alcohol, etc.
Sofradex drops are a clear, almost colorless solution. The solution has the odor of phenylethyl alcohol.
Considering the components that make up the drug, we can note what effect the medicine has on the body:
- bactericidal;
- bacteriostatic;
- antimicrobial;
- antistaphylococcal;
- antiallergic.
The drug is available in plastic bottles
Indications for use
The product is used in the following cases:
- blepharitis;
- conjunctivitis;
- keratitis;
- iridocyclitis;
- bacterial infection of the ears;
- scleritis;
- otitis externa. This applies to both acute and chronic forms.
Contraindications
Any drug has a number of limitations, and these drops are no exception. Most people simply do not pay attention to the existing contraindications. And in vain, because such carelessness can lead to serious complications.
Drops should not be used in the following cases:
- for tuberculosis;
- fungal, purulent or viral infections;
- rupture of the eardrum;
- if eye drops are used, then for glaucoma or keratitis;
- children under three years of age;
- hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
The drug should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Application
Instructions for use of the product include knowledge of the correct dosages and quantities of the drug administered.
A few drops of the medicine should be dripped into the ears up to four times. You can also soak a gauze pad in the solution and leave it in your ears overnight.
The duration of use of the medicine should not be more than a week, otherwise microorganisms will become resistant to the substances contained in the drug.
It is best not to combine ear drops with other antibiotics!
The price of the medicine will please buyers. It may vary depending on the pharmacy chain and city. On average, it fluctuates around 200 rubles.
Analogues of Sofradex are Betagenot, as well as Garazon. These analogues contain similar components and have almost the same effect.
Sofradex in the nose can be used for a child with adenoids, as well as with sinusitis. Drops are also used for prolonged runny nose. This is done to prevent infection from entering the ear.
Also, for allergic rhinitis, the remedy is a real salvation, because with this disease, vasoconstrictor drops cannot be used. The drug has a cleansing effect on the nasal mucosa and also restores breathing.
For adenoids, the drug is administered three times a day. As a result, breathing will become easier and the adenoids will decrease in size.
The drug is used with caution in children of the first year of life. In this case, you should consult a specialist

Treatment of otitis media with Sofradex - correct use of effective ear drops
Ear drops are the first necessity when otitis occurs, because it is unbearably difficult to endure severe, throbbing pain in the ear for a long time, and it is not necessary. Any pharmacy provides a wide selection of medications for this disease, but the drug Sofradex deserves special attention among them.
These ear drops have been on the market for a long time, their price is quite affordable, but their action and effectiveness have already saved hundreds of people from a painful and unpleasant illness. There is no need for a longer treatment period - reviews confirm that Sofradex ear drops act quickly and effectively - the symptoms of the disease disappear the very next day.
Sofradex drops - a panacea for any inflammation
Recently, doctors have been recommending the drug Sofradex to their patients for almost any inflammation of the mucous membranes. These ear drops can rightfully be called eye drops and even nasal drops, although the instructions do not suggest such use. In reality, they cope not only with otitis of the external ear, but also with conjunctivitis, keratitis, eczema of the outer eyelid, adenoids and other diseases of the eyes, ears and nasopharynx.
The price of the drops allows everyone to purchase them, and the instructions describe in detail the method of application.
Active substances
Naturally, all the benefits of the medication are due to its balanced and thoroughly researched composition, which is confirmed by reviews. The substances contained in ear drops have long been known to medicine, and their actions complement each other, making the drug combined. As a result of this, Sofradex ear drops have such a wide spectrum of action. So, the active ingredients of the drug:
Appearance of the drug
Framycetin (5 mg per 1 ml) is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group that affects gram-positive bacteria. Among them is Staphylococcus aureus, which is known to be very difficult to cure. Framycetin is also known for its mercilessness against gram-negative microorganisms (dysentery, E. coli, etc.), but is absolutely powerless against anaerobic microbes and bacteria, that is, those that can live in an oxygen-free environment. Resistance to the drug develops slowly - the instructions describe possible side effects of long-term use.
The instructions for the drug describe all these substances and say that Sofradex drops provide bactericidal, bacteriostatic, antimicrobial, antistaphylococcal, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic and desensitizing effects. These are exactly the beneficial properties of the medication that are needed to relieve symptoms and treat acute inflammation of the ears and eyes.
Invaluable effect on the body: how to use drops correctly
The drug Sofradex is sold by prescription, which means that in order to buy it, you still need to visit a doctor. This is true, because although the drops are effective, they are not suitable for everyone, and they must be used strictly, as the instructions say, and not intuitively. Since the price of ear drops is affordable, they can help anyone if they have a clear indication for use.
To treat acute otitis of the external ear, you just need to instill 2-3 drops into the sore ear up to 3-4 times a day. Once opened, the bottle can be stored for no longer than a month in a dark place. It is important that in case of purulent otitis, ear drops are strictly prohibited, because the discharge of pus is a clear sign of perforation of the eardrum. If droplets enter the middle ear, they can damage the auditory nerve and lead to hearing loss. Therefore, if severe pain is felt after instillation, then treatment with Saphrodex must be stopped immediately.
Composition and storage conditions
The instructions indicate the possibility of another method of use, which is praised by reviews - using a cotton pad. It must be soaked in the preparation and replaced with a new one 4 times a day. The price of the drug allows its repeated purchase. During treatment with Safrodex, other antibiotics with ototoxic or nephrotoxic effects should not be used. The use of Safrodex for longer than 7 days is possible only if there are clearly pronounced positive dynamics in difficult cases. The reason for this is that long-term use can provoke an increase in the resistance of the microflora and hide other inflammatory processes.
Caution, dangerous: contraindications
The instructions for any drug contain contraindications, but, unfortunately, few people pay attention to them. And this is very in vain: a prohibited use can lead to the most unexpected consequences. Negative reviews are based precisely on incorrect application. The price of Sofradex is its clear advantage, but if a person has one of the diseases described below, then it is necessary to choose another medicine. Contraindications:
- tuberculosis;
- purulent, viral or fungal infections;
- perforation of the eardrum;
- glaucoma and herpetic keratitis (in the treatment of eye diseases);
- age up to 3 years.
The effect of the drug during pregnancy and lactation has not been studied, but pregnant women should refrain from using these ear drops. The instructions also inform you that side effects are possible when treating the eyes. Ingestion of the drug is prohibited, but swallowing a bottle of up to 5 ml does not require any treatment - side effects will not be pronounced.
The information is provided for informational purposes only. Do not self-medicate. At the first sign of disease, consult a doctor.
Sofradex ear drops: instructions for use
Ear drops are a necessary drug in the treatment of otitis media. Thanks to them, it is possible to relieve severe, throbbing pain that is simply impossible to endure. Today, on the shelves in pharmacies there is a rich assortment of various medications for the treatment of otitis, but most often doctors prescribe the drug Sofradex to their patients.
These ear drops have long been in wide demand, because they are effective and their price is affordable. Sofradex drops have a quick effect, as the unpleasant symptoms of the disease begin to subside the very next day.
Indications for use
Doctors today increasingly prescribe the drug Sofradex to their patients in the treatment of any inflammatory disease of the mucous membranes. In addition to being used to treat ear diseases, you can even drip them for inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes. The main indication for the use of Sofradex remains otitis media.
Moreover, it can be external, middle and internal. In addition, drops can cope with the disease at the acute and chronic stages. The drug can also be used in the treatment of conjunctivitis, eczema of the outer eyelid, adenoids and other diseases of the ears, eyes and nasopharynx.
When developing the drug, three main components were used:
- Framycetin sulfate. It has a pronounced antibacterial effect, affecting gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It can even destroy Staphylococcus aureus. The main advantage of this component remains that bacteria develop resistance to it extremely rarely. As a result, the drug is considered one of the most effective in the treatment of otitis media.
- Gramicidin. It has a bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect. Due to it, the effect of framycetin is enhanced and expanded.
- Dexamethasone. This is a glucocorticosteroid that has a pronounced antiallergic and anti-inflammatory effect. This component is characterized by the ability to stop the inflammatory process.
And although Sofradex effectively copes with otitis media, the drug has a number of contraindications, which include:
- individual intolerance to certain components of the drug;
- infectious process of viral or fungal origin;
- swelling of the eardrum;
- pregnancy and lactation;
- newborn children.
Drops are prescribed with extreme caution when treating otitis media in young children.
Instructions for use
Sofradex ear drops can only be used for topical use. Before dropping drops, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the ear canal, removing pus and other contaminants from it. Thus, the active components of the drug will be able to penetrate as deeply as possible. The dosage for children and adults will be 2-3 drops 4 times a day. If this procedure is unpleasant for the child, then you can soak a cotton swab in the solution and insert it into the ear canal. This procedure is best performed at night. But during pregnancy, using ear drops is prohibited.
The duration of therapy should not be longer than a week. If you continue to use the drops, this may cause the development of superinfection, which is characterized by high resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to the components of the drug. When using Sofradex drops, it is not advisable to use other dosage forms, especially if they are antibiotics.

Reviews
- Inna, 32 years old: “My otitis media is chronic. The fact is that I did not manage to get to the hospital on time, since I decided that I could cope with the pain and other symptoms myself. But I was unable to get the desired effect. The pain began to intensify, ear congestion arose, and purulent discharge appeared. When I went to the doctor, he diagnosed me with chronic otitis media. Unfortunately, I will no longer be able to completely get rid of the disease, but I can alleviate the course of the exacerbation stage and prolong remission with the help of Sofradex. I don't drip them, but put a gauze pad in my ear. I carry out this manipulation 2 times a day.”
- Maria, 27 years old: “I always have Sofradex in my medicine cabinet. And the reason for this is my chronic otitis media. When I reach the stage of exacerbation, my usual rhythm of life is disrupted, because due to severe pain and discomfort I cannot fully work or sleep. Sofradex drops are what save me. I put them in my ear 3 times a day. I can notice a positive effect the very next day. The pain decreases, the amount of discharge also decreases. Of course, you can’t use it for a long time, otherwise the bacteria will get used to it and you won’t get the desired effect. My dad also uses these drops to relieve inflammation and irritation, because he works for me as a welder, and his eyes regularly get irritated.”
- Valentina, 54 years old: “With the help of Sofradex drops, I managed to cure otitis media and get rid of unpleasant symptoms. I didn't go to the doctor. My godfather is a therapist, so she recommended Sofradex to me. In the morning and afternoon, I dripped 5 drops into each ear canal, but before going to bed, I soaked a gauze swab in the solution and inserted it into the ear. To ensure that the effect of the drops used is quick and high-quality, you should thoroughly clean the ear canals before using the drug. In addition, I began to notice that when using Sofradex I was able to prolong remission and live a full life.”
Sofradex is an effective ear drop for the treatment of otitis media. They can be used by children and adults. Cases of overdose are rare. As a rule, they occur due to an increase in the dosage of the drug indicated by the doctor. The uniqueness of the medicine is that the patient can feel relief the very next day. If side effects occur, you should immediately inform your doctor and stop using the drops.

Ear drops "Sofradex" - instructions for use
The medical medicine "Sofradex" is the most famous in the Russian and foreign markets. Sofradex eye and ear drops are produced for the effective treatment of otitis media and other ear inflammations.
This medicine can also be used for inflammation of the nasal mucosa, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus and adenoids.
Available in the form of 5 ml drops. The ointment, 15 and 20 g in volume, is available in metal tubes. Both ointment and drops are identical in composition and intense active ingredients.
The active ingredients are framycetin in the form of sulfate, gramicidin, dexamethasone in the form of metasulfobenzoate.
The drug has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects.
The medicine effectively destroys infections, bacteria and foci of disease in the ear. When injected into the sore ear, it instantly eliminates redness of the skin, pain, an irritating sensation of heat in the ear canal and a feeling of congestion.
Take ear and eye drops in one bottle "Sofradex" with the following indicators:
- Acute and chronic otitis of the external ear;
- Eye disease;
- Inflammation of the outer membrane of the eye;
- Inflammation of the cornea of the eye;
- Inflammation of the iris and ciliary body of the eyeball.
Recommendations for the use of Sofradex drops
Sofradex drops are used only for external otitis and if the eardrum is intact. Otherwise, there is a possibility of causing severe harm to your health. If you nevertheless instilled the medicine and felt immediate pain, this is the first symptom of membrane damage. If this happens, stop using the medicine immediately.
The topical drug is known to effectively relieve pain, as well as fight allergies and other symptoms. Inject the drug into the ear canal of the outer ear.
Inject three drops of the medicine into each ear four times a day. Close your ear after applying the medication with a cotton pad.
If you experience discomfort when instilling, use turundas. Don't keep them on for longer than 15 minutes. Use new tampons each time you instill them.
Turunda is a small cotton or gauze swab, the main purpose of which is to clean hard-to-reach areas of the body. It is used for insertion into the nasal passages, urethra, ear canal, fistula, anus or purulent wounds.
Since the drug causes the development of addiction to antibiotics, the maximum treatment with Sofradex should not be more than a week.
Close the bottle with a cap after each use. The validity period of the unopened medicine is no more than one month.
When using drops for a long period of time in doses greater than recommended, an overdose may occur.
In this case, the patient is prescribed symptomatic therapy.
Symptomatic therapy is used to eliminate individual symptoms of the disease. It can be used in addition to etiotropic and pathogenetic therapy.
Is it possible to use Sofradex drops for children?
If ear disease occurs in children, consult an otolaryngologist. After visiting him, begin treatment immediately to avoid complications.
With the permission of a specialist, use Sofradex drops to help your child recover. Instructions for use in children's ears include several rules.
It is known that this medicine is approved for use from childhood. However, when instilling instillations in infants with otitis media, it is necessary to be very careful and only with the permission of the doctor.
For older children, the use of drops is allowed for no more than five days. Please consult your pediatrician first. When using the drug, follow the dosage.
Often this drug is used as a preventive method after experiencing inflammation of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus or long-term runny nose. It is these diseases that provoke the appearance of otitis media.
The dosage of drops for children is as follows: place three drops in each ear four times a day. At the time of recovery, the number of drops is reduced to one or two drops, depending on the patient’s health condition.
Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Since Sofradex can negatively affect the condition of the fetus or newborn.
Analogs
At the moment, there are no analogues of Sofradex ear drops. This has to do with the functioning structural elements in the drug. However, there are drugs that are similar in their medicinal effect. They are also prescribed for bacteria in the ears and eyes.
Dexon

The structure of the medicine includes an antiseptic drug, an antifungal agent, an inorganic compound, an acid salt of an alkali metal sodium, a specialized salt and purified water.

For ear diseases, instill the drug into the outer ear, three drops twice a day.
The use of the medicine is allowed for children, but only from six years of age.

The pain went away within two days, and the otitis media was cured within a week. Very easy to use. First you need to remove the plastic cover and then put the transparent cap on it. It's hygienic and practical."
Prevention
However, the best prevention of the disease will be the absence of symptoms of the disease. Temper your body and strengthen your immune system.
Treat runny nose and colds in a timely manner. But if you still get otitis externa, feel free to use Sofradex, but only after consulting with your doctor.
Try to drink more water and keep the room warm, avoid drafts and cold. Protect your ears from water, cover your ears with cotton pads when showering, and follow the entire course of treatment prescribed by your otolaryngologist.

Sofradex ear drops - instructions for use + analogues and reviews
The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drug sofradex selectively suppresses the activity of many pathogenic microorganisms. Widely used for drug therapy in ENT practice and ophthalmology. The marketing authorization holder is India.
Yes, this medicine is an antibiotic, so it is not recommended to use it without a doctor’s prescription.
Sofradex ear drops - instructions for use
Framycetin sulfate belongs to natural antibacterial substances from the group of aminoglycosides. Has antimicrobial activity against:
- gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus are opportunistic bacteria that are part of the indigenous microflora of the human body. With a decrease in immunity and concomitant infections, they can cause diseases;
- gram-negative representatives of the Enterobacteriaceae family - Escherichia, Protea, and Shigella, which are the cause of many inflammatory processes.
However, framycetin sulfate is not able to kill viruses, microscopic fungi and anaerobic bacteria. It is noted that, in evolutionary terms, the development of resistance to this substance is a long-term and uncommon process among pathogenic prokaryotes.
Gramicidin is an antibiotic from the tyrothricin group. The producer is Bacillus brevis var. G.-B., but on an industrial scale a synthetic analogue of a natural substance is obtained. It is characterized by high antistaphylococcal activity, including against MRSA. When the minimum inhibitory concentration is reached, it has a bacteriostatic effect, and when the dose increases, it has a bactericidal effect.
Dexamethasone is a hormonal substance from a number of glucocorticoids, which is known for its ability to effectively reduce the inflammatory process and weaken the allergic reaction. One of the main differences of the substance is its desensitizing effect on the human body.
The anti-inflammatory effect is achieved by suppressing the release of inflammatory mediators into the blood, inhibiting the migration of mast cells and reducing the level of permeability of capillary walls. In the treatment of eye infections, it relieves pain, reduces pain in the eyes and fear of light. Use as ear drops is justified by its ability to relieve acute inflammatory processes.

- twin 80;

Indications for use
An antibiotic is prescribed by a doctor after establishing an accurate diagnosis and determining the sensitivity of pathogenic microorganisms to aminoglycoside class antibiotics. The medicine is effective for the treatment of inflammatory processes that occur in the organs of vision and hearing:
- Blepharitis is an infection of the eyelids, the main pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus. The peculiarity of this pathology is long and difficult treatment due to the high resistance of staphylococci to many antibiotics;
- bacterial conjunctivitis - damage to the mucous membrane of the eye. Main symptoms: purulent discharge that prevents the opening of the eyes, swelling, severe itching and acute pain in the visual organs;
- keratitis - clouding, ulceration and pain in the eyes, which contribute to the formation of a cataract or decreased visual acuity in the absence of adequate drug therapy;
- anterior uveitis - the prevalence of the disease does not exceed 0.05% among the entire population and is characterized by pathological changes in the color of the iris, constriction of the pupil and clouding of the vitreous, which leads to a sharp decrease in the patient’s visual acuity;
- scleritis is an inflammatory process of the deep layers of the sclera, and this pathology can develop as an independent disease or be a consequence of anterior uveitis. If untreated, leads to irreversible complete loss of vision;
- episcleritis - the pathology is similar to the previous one, except that the outer layers of the eye membrane are affected;
- eczema of the eyelid is a neuroallergic pathological condition of the skin around the eyes, in which extensive redness, itching and polymorphic rashes are observed on the eyelids;
- acute and chronic form of bacterial otitis – inflammation of the external, middle internal auditory canal. According to statistics, 80% of children under the age of 3 have experienced otitis media at least once. Symptoms: abundant purulent exudates, cutting pain in the ear, shooting sensations, increased body temperature. The disease can lead to complete hearing loss.
Contraindications
Sofradex antibiotic should not be used if the patient has the following notes in the patient’s medical history:
- individual intolerance (allergy) to at least one component of the medicine;
- concomitant viral and fungal infections, especially tuberculosis and trachoma;
- damaged outer stratum corneum and sclera of the eye;
- herpes simplex keratitis, since a sharp increase in the diameter of the eye ulcer is possible, which can lead to complete blindness;
- glaucoma;
- damage or absence of the eardrum, since when the active component of Sofradex penetrates into the ear, hearing loss occurs;
- the patient's pregnancy;
- lactation period.
The use of the medicine in newborn children is prohibited, and for younger patients, therapy is carried out under the strict supervision of a doctor. The occurrence of side effects is a reason for immediate correction of the course of antibiotic therapy.
Dosage regimen
The instructions for using the antibiotic Sofradex in the ears indicate that the medicine is dripped into each ear, 2-3 drops with an interval of at least 6 hours. To treat external otitis, a cotton swab is moistened with medicine and placed in the ear for no more than 5 hours.
In order to stop mild and moderate infectious processes, the product is instilled 1-2 drops into each eye at intervals of 1 time every 4 hours. When treating a severe stage of the disease, the time interval for instillation is reduced to 1 hour. An important feature: when the symptoms of the disease are alleviated, the time interval is gradually increased.
The maximum permissible time of use of the drug should not exceed 1 week. The exception is severe forms of diseases accompanied by concomitant infections. However, you should strictly follow all doctor’s recommendations and limit the uncontrolled use of antibiotics to reduce the risk of developing a high level of resistance in virulent strains of microorganisms.
Side effects
Sofradex antibiotic is distinguished not only by its wide spectrum of activity, but also by a small list of side symptoms. Among them, only an immediate and long-term type of allergy is possible, which is accompanied by acute pain, burning and itching of the organs of hearing or vision. Negative effects from the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, and circulatory system are excluded with the correct dosage regimen.
It is noted that long-term therapy is characterized by an increase in intraocular pressure, a decrease in visual acuity and the development of glaucoma. This fact creates an urgent need for regular measurement and monitoring of intraocular pressure. If the time interval for eye drops is not observed and drops are used too frequently, thinning of the outer membranes of the eye, perforation, and the development of concomitant fungal infections are noted.
Use during pregnancy
To date, no experiments have been conducted to establish the negative effect of the antibiotic on the course of pregnancy and child development. It is known that the drug can diffuse through the placental barrier and into breast milk. Therefore, pregnant patients and women during lactation are prohibited from taking this medication.
If there is an urgent need for use, breastfeeding should be suspended. Important: the active components included in the composition negatively affect the child’s intestinal microflora and can lead to the formation of extensive pathological processes.

- Garazon – 130 rubles, ear and eye drops. The main active ingredients are gentamicin and betamethasone;

Sofradex ear drops – reviews
Otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists positively characterize this drug, paying special attention not only to its effectiveness, but also to the absence of a large list of side effects. It is acceptable to prescribe to younger patients, but the course of treatment requires increased attention from parents and doctors to the general condition of the child.
During the entire course of drug therapy with Sofradex, it is necessary to avoid driving a vehicle and working with dangerous devices that require increased visual control. This is because the medicine may reduce visual acuity.
Patients also respond positively to the antibiotic. The authors note affordability, ease of use and rapid relief of negative symptoms of the disease.
