How to soften the mucous membrane of the throat with a dry cough?

Many people suffering from upper respiratory tract disease are interested in how to soften their throat with a dry cough? A dry cough is an integral part of many colds; it is accompanied by a dry and sore throat, causing the patient a lot of discomfort.

Table of contents:

Causes of dry cough

A dry cough is the body’s protective reaction to diseases of the upper respiratory tract. The patient's body tries to get rid of germs and bacteria present on the mucous membrane of the throat. With a dry cough, sputum may be completely absent or present in small quantities.

For example, with fungal pharyngitis, sputum settles on the back wall of the throat, irritating the mucous membrane, causing a sore throat that causes a cough. In this case, it is quite difficult to get rid of phlegm, so with a dry cough, additional measures are needed to soften the throat.

The reasons causing this unpleasant phenomenon may be different. Therefore, before starting treatment, it is necessary to identify the root cause of a dry cough by contacting a specialist. Remember that only a doctor can prescribe the correct treatment. Traditional methods are complementary and are used along with medications.

Diseases accompanied by dry cough:

  1. Pharyngitis.
  2. Smoker's bronchitis.
  3. Laryngitis.
  4. Allergic reaction to chemicals.
  5. Tracheitis.
  6. Pleurisy.

In order to cure a dry cough, it is necessary to undergo a full examination. If you know the cause of sore throat, it is much easier to overcome the disease. To soften the mucous membrane of the throat, you can and should use traditional methods that help reduce soreness, soften and remove phlegm, and relieve inflammation.

How to soften the throat mucosa

You can soften an irritated throat with the help of medications and traditional methods, including inhalation and gargling. Warm milk heated to 40-50ºC, to which a little butter or honey is added, helps to soften the throat very well. You need to be careful with the last component, since with a dry cough, honey can irritate the already inflamed mucous membrane. Therefore, it is advisable to use this beekeeping product only in diluted form. For a glass of milk, take no more than half a teaspoon of liquid flower honey.

It is better not to use buckwheat honey at all, as this product is very irritating to the throat. Candied honey does not dissolve completely; small particles will scratch the inflamed mucous membrane, so it cannot be used for treatment in this case.

When you have a dry cough, it is very important that the air in the room is moist. It is necessary to constantly ventilate the room, place vessels with water over the radiator or place a wet towel on the radiator. An aroma lamp with essential oil helps to disinfect the air very well. Phytoncides contained in oils disinfect not only the room, but also the patient’s respiratory tract. Essential oils of fir, spruce, pine, juniper, eucalyptus, mint, lavender, and sage are perfect for this purpose.

If a dry cough was caused by colds or fungal pharyngitis, then you can gargle with soda. For a glass of warm water, take 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, the same amount of sea salt, add 5 drops of iodine. It is advisable to gargle before meals (3 times a day). The purpose of this procedure: to cleanse the mucous membrane of harmful microorganisms and dead cells, to help phlegm come out.

For fungal pharyngitis, soda not only clears the throat, but also destroys the fungus. For bronchitis and lung disease, soda rinses are not used, since in this case the cause of the cough does not lie in the larynx. Soda can dry out the mucous membrane, so it is necessary to maintain the exact dosage and not overuse rinses.

It is important to remember that if you have a dry cough, you should not use lozenges and tablets designed to be dissolved in the mouth, as they will irritate the mucous membrane even more.

There are special syrups made from medicinal herbs that perfectly soften the throat and eliminate dry cough. Even something as harmless as syrup should not be taken on your own initiative. Treatment should always be prescribed by a doctor, otherwise the consequences can be very dire.

When you have a dry cough, it is very important to exclude from your diet foods that irritate the mucous membrane of the throat. You cannot eat hot, spicy, smoked or salty foods, drink coffee, strong black tea, or sweet carbonated water. If the cause of the disease is a fungus in the throat, then all dairy products and sweets are excluded. Teas made from medicinal plants such as chamomile, linden, mint, lemon balm, and calendula help very well. Take 2 teaspoons of herbs per cup of boiling water; you can add sugar, but it’s better to do without it.

Traditional methods of soothing the throat with a dry cough

Black radish juice is an excellent folk remedy, thanks to which inflammation is reduced, bacteria are destroyed, and the mucous membrane is softened. You need to take a radish, wash it, cut a round hole, fill it with liquid honey. The radish is left for several hours, after a sufficient amount of juice has been released, the resulting liquid is diluted with warm milk (a tablespoon of juice per glass of milk). The medicine is taken in small sips so that the liquid flows smoothly down the walls of the throat. This folk remedy helps turn a dry cough into a wet one.

Aloe juice will help cope with this unpleasant problem. For treatment, only old leaves of the plant are used. The freshly cut leaf is wrapped in paper, after which it is sent to the refrigerator for 2 weeks, but if there is no time to wait, then it is enough to keep the aloe in a cool place for 2-3 days.

After this procedure, agave juice acquires healing powers. You can also use a freshly cut leaf, but in this case the treatment will not be as effective. A teaspoon of aloe juice is mixed with honey (a tablespoon) and lemon juice (a teaspoon), diluted with a glass of milk. Drink in small sips, as it is important that the liquid coats the throat.

Marshmallow root relieves irritation, eliminates dryness and sore throat; many cough syrups are made on its basis. Place a tablespoon of crushed root in a thermos, pour boiling water (250 ml), leave for about an hour, after which the contents are drunk in 3 doses. If the taste of marshmallow is disgusting to children, then the resulting decoction is used as tea leaves. The concentrate is diluted with boiled water (the amount should be several times larger), and then consumed as a light healing tea.

An oat decoction is perfect for softening the mucous membrane of the throat. Whole grains are soaked in cold water in the evening and then simmered over low heat for 20 minutes. For 500 ml of water there are 3 to 5 tablespoons of oat grains. You should get a viscous, sweetish liquid, reminiscent of jelly. Drink the decoction in such a way that the liquid remains on the walls of the throat as long as possible.

Inhalation for dry cough

Inhalation will help relieve irritation and eliminate sore throat. For this purpose, medicinal herbs and essential oils are used. Inhaling vapors helps clear the airways, softens the mucous membranes and relieves swelling. To carry out the procedure, you need to boil water in a kettle, add a tablespoon of chamomile, eucalyptus leaves, and calendula. After which the patient should bow his head over hot water and cover it with a towel. The procedure takes 7-10 minutes.

Essential oils can be used for inhalation. Boiling water is poured into a bowl, 3-5 drops of essential oils of cedar, juniper, calendula, and sage are added. For one procedure, 20 drops of essential oils are enough (they can be combined with each other or used individually). If a decoction of medicinal herbs is used instead of water, the amount of essential oil is halved. The head is bowed over a bowl of hot water, covered with a towel, and the steam is inhaled for 10 minutes.

Medicines and folk remedies will help soften the mucous membrane of the throat with a dry cough. All treatment methods should be used only after the approval of the attending physician.

How to soothe an irritated throat

Eaten “in its pure form” or dissolved in tea, honey itself perfectly treats sore throat. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antipyretic components, honey can successfully replace paracetamol, aspirin and most cold and sore throat remedies. And honey dissolved in warm coffee will quickly relieve your cough.

Gargling with warm water with table salt dissolved in it will help soothe an irritated throat, relieve swelling of the mucous membranes and reduce mucus secretion. In addition, salt kills bacteria. To make a salt rinse, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. You can gargle with this solution every 3 hours.

Like saline solution, baking soda can soothe the symptoms of a sore throat because it kills bacteria and prevents the growth of yeast and fungi. For greater effectiveness, it is recommended to mix soda with salt: for 1 glass of warm water, take 1/4 teaspoon of soda and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. You can gargle with this solution every 3 hours.

Chamomile is a natural healer; a decoction of its flowers has anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties that will quickly cure a sore throat. Steam inhalations of chamomile decoction are also useful for relieving nasal congestion and other cold symptoms. Drinking chamomile tea stimulates the immune system, helping it fight infections, including colds. A decoction of other medicinal herbs has a similar effect: sage, calendula, marshmallow root, licorice root, echinacea.

Peppermint is known primarily for its ability to freshen breath, but few people know that it is an excellent treatment for sore throats. Peppermint contains menthol, which thins mucus, reduces throat inflammation and soothes coughs. In addition, peppermint has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties, which allows it to quickly relieve throat irritation. Both drinking mint tea and gargling are beneficial.

Fenugreek (Indian Shambhala, Arabic Helba) is a very healthy spice, widely popular in the East and has a number of medicinal properties: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. By the way, it is included in curry and khmeli-suneli. Fenugreek decoction can be successfully used to treat sore throat, both in the form of rinses and by oral administration. The only contraindication is long periods of pregnancy. Cinnamon and cloves also have similar properties. You can add spices to regular black tea and use it for both drinking and gargling.

Ginger is another spice that has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. You can make ginger tea using either dried or fresh ginger. If desired, you can add honey to it. Gargling with ginger infusion or decoction, or drinking ginger tea will help cure an irritated throat. In addition, ginger is good for treating coughs.

Natural apple cider vinegar has strong antimicrobial properties. And due to its acidic nature, it effectively thins mucus and prevents the growth of bacteria. To rinse, dissolve 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water (if desired and possible, you can also add 1 tablespoon of honey). The treatment regimen is as follows: Gargle with 1-2 sips, then take one sip orally. Repeat the procedure 1-2 times every hour.

Lemon contains a large amount of antibacterial substances, vitamin C and antioxidants that can fight colds. It also increases salivation, which moisturizes and flushes the throat mucosa. If there is no acute pain in the throat, then it is best to suck a whole slice of lemon along with the skin, and then chew and eat it. If you have a sore throat, you can gargle with warm water with lemon juice added to it.

These two types of oils have a number of properties that can fight infections, reduce inflammation and relieve pain. In addition, the oil will soften the mucous membranes of the throat and make swallowing easier. You can either add a spoonful of oil to a hot drink or just eat it in its pure form. But you should limit yourself to 1-2 procedures per day, since the oil has a strong laxative effect.

No, don't drink, don't be happy! Just gargle, as alcohol is known to kill germs and bacteria. To rinse, add 2-3 tbsp to a glass of warm water. spoons of vodka or 1 teaspoon of alcohol. Well, if you swallow something during the rinsing process, so be it.

If you don’t have special medicinal lollipops, even ordinary candies will ease your condition - sucking lollipops increases salivation, and saliva will moisturize the mucous membrane of the throat and wash away germs. Mint or menthol lozenges slightly dull the pain, although this effect is short-term.

European and American doctors recommend treating a sore throat... with ice cream. In the end, people get sick not from the cold, but from infections. If you've ever had your tonsils or tonsils removed, your doctors probably recommended that you eat more ice cream after the surgery. The same thing is with a sore throat - cold has anesthetic properties, blood vessels narrow significantly, inflammatory processes are preserved, because blood does not circulate through the vessels in the same volume and does not actively deliver decay products secreted by harmful bacteria. As a result, the dynamics of the inflammatory process decreases. The mobilization of the body's hidden reserves cannot be discounted. When exposed to cold, the immune system is activated. But I still won’t risk strongly recommending this method. Whether to use this method or not is up to you.

How can you soothe your throat with a dry cough at home?

During the cold season, both adults and children are especially susceptible to colds. Frequent companions of wet feet and frozen hands are a sore throat and an annoying dry cough. Before going to the doctor at home, you can alleviate your condition, reduce pain and coughing attacks with the help of folk remedies, in particular rinses, as well as medications from your home medicine cabinet.

You can soothe a sore throat with a dry cough at home using both proven folk remedies and medications with proven effectiveness. The most popular method, supported by both official and alternative medicine, is gargling. This simple procedure is available even to children. Everyone can choose a rinse to suit their taste.

It must be remembered that rinsing will only help if it is regular and frequent. It is optimal to gargle with a warm solution 5-6 times a day for at least 3 days of illness. For one rinse, an adult needs about a third of a cup, that is, ml.

There are various recipes for gargling:

    1. 1. Herbal decoctions and infusions. This includes chamomile, sage and calendula, well known from childhood. These herbs are sold at any pharmacy in paper filter bags, which are brewed with boiling water and infused for minutes according to the instructions. For a half-liter jar of boiling water, two bags are enough.
    2. 2. Herbal extracts and tinctures. Chlorophyllipt and Rotocan are aqueous and alcoholic solutions containing extracts of medicinal plants (eucalyptus, calendula, yarrow). Before use for rinsing, they are diluted in water in the ratio of a teaspoon per glass. Propolis tincture is also used, the solution from which is prepared according to a similar principle.
    3. 3. Antiseptics. This group includes a solution of Furacillin, baking soda, Lugol, saline solution.
    4. 4. Extreme methods. There are recipes that are not suitable for everyone: gargling with a mixture of soda and iodine solution, heated red wine, lemon juice. All these products irritate and even “burn” the mucous membrane of the oropharynx, which is already in an inflamed state, but nevertheless have a bactericidal effect and therefore help.

You cannot gargle with a solution of vinegar or potassium permanganate, it is dangerous! Insufficient dilution of vinegar and undissolved potassium permanganate crystals can cause severe chemical burns of the mucous membranes.

In addition to gargling, there are other emergency ways to help a sore throat:

    1. 1. Alkaline drinking. This is mineral water, milk with a small amount of soda, a weak solution of soda and salt. Alkaline drinking not only reduces pain and attacks of dry cough, but also causes sputum to be discharged.
    2. 2. Warm drink. Hot drinks can harm already inflamed mucous membranes. But warm ones - tea, fruit juice, compote, milk - will undoubtedly help.
    3. 3. Honey Adding honey to a drink or eating a spoonful of honey with warm tea is an effective way to soothe even the most severe sore throat.
    4. 4. Oil. If you are bothered by a painful dry cough, a sure way to relieve an attack is a small piece of butter, less than a teaspoon. It gently lubricates the throat, eliminating soreness, and thereby stopping attacks of dry cough.

You can pamper a sick child with a simple but healthy treat: a sandwich with butter and honey. The combination of oil and honey, similar to a delicious cream, will quickly eliminate sore throat and sore throat.

Any tablets, lozenges and throat lozenges will relieve a sore throat and stop attacks of dry cough caused by sore throat.

These drugs can be divided into different groups depending on the effect they provide. It is necessary to remember: these are not lollipops or candies; you should not consume them in unlimited quantities. This applies to a greater extent to local antibiotics.

    Types of throat tablets:

    1. 1. Painkillers: Strepsils Plus, Grammidin Neo, Hexoral Tabs.
    2. 2. Anti-inflammatory: Angi Sept Doctor Theiss.
    3. 3. Antiseptic: Faringosept, Lizobakt, Neo-Angin.
    4. 4. With antibiotic: Strepsils, Grammicidin.
    5. 5. With essential oils: Septolete, Eucalyptus, Sage.

All of the above methods are completely suitable for adults, with the exception of moments of individual intolerance. A child's body is different from an adult's, so it is necessary to use slightly different treatment tactics.

Treatments that cause additional discomfort should be avoided. Thus, it is not recommended to gargle or spray the throat with preparations containing iodine or alcohol solutions. If a child has an extremely negative attitude towards milk or honey, you should not force him to drink or feed him. You can choose a rinse solution with a pleasant taste and drink herbal tea. A child over 5 years old can be offered, like an adult, tablets or lozenges suitable for his age group: Children's Grammidin, Lizobakt, Faringosept.

Pregnant women should avoid honey as it is a strong allergen. The mildest rinses are suitable, especially herbal decoctions and infusions, soda and saline solutions, and alkaline drinks.

Tablets approved during pregnancy: Lizobakt, Grammidin, Neo-Angin. Before using any drug, you should consult your doctor.

In addition to the above methods, following some simple rules will help:

    • Ventilate the room more often. There is no need to create drafts, but an influx of fresh cool air will ease the condition.
    • Humidify the air. With insufficient humidity, the mucous membranes dry out, which increases pain, tickling and coughing.
    • Drink more. This rule works for any cold.

If a dry cough does not go away for a long time, is accompanied by fever, allergies, or heartburn, you should urgently consult a doctor.
