Syrup "Prospan" for children: instructions for use

If a child suffers from a dry, debilitating cough and has difficulty coughing up mucus, which worsens his condition and interferes with sleep, parents try to help the baby as quickly as possible and eliminate such an unpleasant symptom with the help of expectorants.

Table of contents:

At the same time, you want to give your baby a safe and at the same time effective medicine, so they often resort to herbal remedies, one of which is Prospan.

To prevent the child from protesting against the medicine, it is released in the form of a tasty syrup. How does it affect the respiratory system, in what dosage is it prescribed to babies, is it allowed for infants and what analogues can it be replaced with?

Release form

Prospan syrup is produced by the German company Engelhard Arzneimittel in dark glass bottles containing 100 or 200 ml of a slightly cloudy light brown thick liquid that smells like cherries. For convenient and accurate dosing, there is an additional plastic dispenser cap on top of the bottle.

In addition, there is a portioned version of the syrup called Prospan sachet. This is a box with 21 sachets of 5 ml of medicine each. In addition to syrup, Prospan is also available in drops. In this form, the medication is not only given to the child to drink, but is also used for nebulizer inhalations, diluted with clean water 1:2. Prospan does not have any other forms (capsules, tablets, ampoules, etc.).

Compound

The action of Prospan is due to the extract obtained from the leaves of climbing ivy. It is presented in the medicine in the form of a dry extract at a dose of 7 mg per 1 milliliter of syrup. One serving package of Prospan sachet contains 35 mg of extract. To obtain the extract, 30% ethyl alcohol is used, but during the drying process of the raw material it completely evaporates.

To ensure that the medicine is liquid, sweet in taste and does not deteriorate during storage, xanthan gum, liquid sorbitol, potassium sorbate, purified water and citric acid are added to it. In addition to these components, Prospan sachet also contains levomenthol. The pleasant smell of the medicine is due to the presence of flavoring - cherry in syrup in the bottle and orange in portioned sachets. This syrup does not contain sugar, dyes or alcohol.

Operating principle

The biologically active substances contained in ivy extract have the ability to make mucus released in the respiratory tract more liquid, which helps to cough it up. This effect of Prospan is called mucolytic and expectorant.

This syrup also has the ability to reduce spasms in the bronchi, since under its influence the muscles of the bronchi relax. All these effects help to cope with dry cough and speed up recovery from various pathologies of the respiratory system.

Studies have also confirmed the presence of some antimicrobial and antifungal effects in Prospan.

Indications

Prospan is prescribed to children who cough, but the sputum during this cough is too viscous, so it is painful and unproductive. The drug helps with acute respiratory infections, bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, cystic fibrosis, pharyngitis and other diseases. It is indicated for both acute inflammatory processes and chronic diseases.

At what age is it allowed?

Prospan in the form of syrup is considered safe for children and is used even in infants. This remedy can be prescribed to both 6-month-old children and 2-3-year-old children, schoolchildren or older patients. The drug Prospan sachet is prescribed from the age of 6, since the opened sachet cannot be stored.

Contraindications

Taking Prospan is prohibited for children with:

  • fructose intolerance;
  • hypersensitivity to any component of the syrup;
  • glucose-galactose malabsorption;
  • lack of isomaltase/sucrase.

Side effects

Since Prospan's base is herbal, such a medicine may cause an allergic reaction. In addition, in some patients, the use of syrup provokes stool thinning. This side effect is associated with the presence of sorbitol in the drug.

Instructions for use

The syrup is given to the child to drink by pouring it into a measuring cup. Before taking the medicine, you should shake it so that the ingredients that settle to the bottom are evenly mixed. If you use Prospan sachet, knead the sachet with your fingers before use.

If a small child refuses to drink the syrup undiluted, you can add a little non-hot water to it. For the youngest children, it is more convenient to give medicine from a syringe without a needle.

The dosage of the drug in childhood is as follows:

  • If the child is not yet a year old, he is advised to give Prospan twice a day, 2.5 ml.
  • For young patients aged 1 to 6 years, a single dose of syrup will also be 2.5 ml, but this medicine can be taken three times a day.
  • A schoolchild or teenager is given the drug 3 times a day, 5 ml per dose. Over the age of 6 years, you can also use portioned sachets - one sachet at a time.

The duration of treatment with Prospan is influenced by the course of the disease, but the drug is not prescribed for a period of less than one week. In addition, when the symptoms of the disease have already disappeared, it is recommended to drink the syrup for several more days to consolidate its effect.

If on the second or third day of treatment the signs of the disease progress or the condition does not improve, you should contact your pediatrician and choose another medication.

Overdose

If a child drinks a lot of syrup at one time (more than 7.5 ml for children under 6 years of age and more than 15 ml for patients 7 years of age and older), this causes a feeling of nausea, changes in stool or vomiting. In case of such an accidental overdose, the drug is immediately discontinued and the child is shown to a doctor. If the dosage is slightly exceeded (less than three times), no negative effects often occur.

Compatibility with other drugs

Like many other expectorant drugs, Prospan syrup should not be given to children simultaneously with drugs that block the cough reflex. With this combination of medications, the child’s condition will worsen, because the antitussive medicine will make it difficult to separate sputum, which will become liquefied due to taking Prospan. Simultaneous treatment with antibiotics or antiviral drugs is not prohibited.

Terms of sale and storage

In accordance with the instructions, storage conditions are as follows:

  • Prospan in syrup form, like the drug in drops, is an over-the-counter medicine. This means that it is freely sold in pharmacies to anyone who wants it. But if such a medication is purchased for a child, you should first consult a specialist to make sure that it is advisable to take it.
  • The average price of a bottle with a volume of 100 milliliters is rubles, and for a package with 200 milliliters of syrup you need to pay from 700 to 850 rubles. One box of Prospan sachets costs about 540 rubles.
  • The shelf life of this form of Prospan is 3 years, but after opening the bottle it is reduced to 3 months. The shelf life of sealed portioned bags is also 3 years.
  • The recommended storage temperature for syrup is up to 25 degrees Celsius. Since the medicine is sweet and smells good, it is important to hide it securely from small children to prevent an overdose.

During storage, the syrup may become cloudy or its taste may change, but this does not in any way affect its medicinal effect and is due to its plant base.

Reviews

Prospan in the form of syrup receives mostly good reviews from parents. Moms like that the medicine is safe, does not contain alcohol or harmful dyes, very rarely provokes unpleasant side symptoms, and is approved even for the youngest patients. Prospan sachet is praised for its convenient packaging, because it does not need to be diluted or measured with a spoon, but just open the bag and pour the syrup into your mouth.

Most children find the taste of the medicine pleasant and do not protest against this medicine. But the main advantage of Prospan is its fairly rapid therapeutic effect. According to mothers, this drug completely relieves cough after just a few days of use. The disadvantages of the medicine include only a short shelf life and high price.

Analogs

If it is impossible to use Prospan for one reason or another, you can replace it with another ivy-based medicine. Such drugs are:

  • Gedelix. This medication, like Prospan, is available both in syrup (it is given from birth) and in drops (they are contraindicated before the age of 2).
  • Herbion ivy syrup. The concentration of the active ingredient in this drug is also 7 mg/1 ml, however, the manufacturer noted age under 2 years as contraindications.

In addition, instead of Prospan, you can use other herbal medicines that have an expectorant effect, for example:

  • Bronchipret. The extract from ivy leaves in this medicine is supplemented with another plant extract - from the herb thyme. Children are most often prescribed Bronchipret in syrup, because it can be given from the age of three months. However, the medicine is also available in drops, but due to the high concentration of active compounds, this form is prescribed only from 6 years of age.
  • Bronchicum. This honey-smelling syrup acts on the bronchi due to thyme extract. It can be used to treat children from the age of six months. There is also the drug Bronchicum TP, which is an aromatic elixir. In its composition, primrose extract was added to the thyme extract. This medication is prescribed to young patients over 1 year of age.
  • Dry cough syrup. This medicine includes extracts from licorice and marshmallow, as well as anise oil and some other components with anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects. The drug is produced in dry form in bottles or paper bags. After mixing with water, this medication can be given in the dose prescribed by the doctor to a child of any age.
  • Marshmallow syrup. The expectorant, softening and enveloping effect of this medicine is due to the marshmallow root extract. A doctor may prescribe this drug from birth, but due to the high risk of allergies, it is not advisable to give this syrup to babies under one year of age.
  • Pulmex baby. This product is an ointment based on Peruvian balsam and essential oils of eucalyptus and rosemary. This medicine is used to lubricate the chest of children older than 6 months.
  • Syrup Doctor Theiss. The effect of this drug on mucus in the respiratory tract is associated with the presence of plantain extract in the composition. The medication is used in the treatment of children older than one year.
  • Linkas. This herbal preparation with many components is approved for children 6 months and older. It effectively fights the inflammatory process in the bronchi and makes sputum more liquid.

In addition to herbal remedies for dry cough, children can also be prescribed medications based on acetylcysteine, ambroxol, bromhexine, guaifenesin or carbocysteine. Such drugs also have a pronounced expectorant effect, but also have their own contraindications. In addition, some of them are contraindicated for infants or children under 3 years of age.

For this reason, it is best to choose an analogue if treatment with Prospan is impossible together with a doctor.

Dr. Komarovsky will tell you all about cough medicines for children in the next video.

Prospan: drops and cough syrup for children

Children often suffer from colds with cough. This is due to the fact that their immunity is at the development stage. If a child has a sore or red throat or a barking cough, then action should be taken.

Prospan is a mucolytic agent based on herbal ingredients. The drug thins mucus, accelerates the clearance of the respiratory tract, and stops coughing. The safe herbal medicine is produced in different dosage forms for patients of different age categories.

Prospan: basic information

Prospan is an effective German drug for the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory diseases. The medication is presented in syrup, drops, and effervescent tablets. The first two forms are used to treat children.

  • extract from ivy leaves;
  • potassium salt of sorbic acid;
  • sorbitol liquid food grade;
  • food additive E330;
  • aromatic additive “Cherry”;
  • xanthan;
  • distilled water.

In appearance, it is a cloudy liquid of a light brown color with a cherry aroma. In addition, the syrup is produced in sachets, but it is prescribed to children from 6 years of age.

Drops for oral administration and inhalation contain the following components:

  • ivy extract;
  • saccharin;
  • ethyl alcohol (96%);
  • anise oil;
  • fennel oil;
  • peppermint oil;
  • distilled water.
This dosage form has a dark brown hue, with the aroma of fennel and ethanol. The syrup is used from birth, and drops from 12 months.
Prospan is prescribed to a child for the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic respiratory tract infections, which are accompanied by a nonproductive cough:
  • Inflammation of the pharynx or larynx.
  • Tracheitis.
  • Inflammation of the bronchi or lungs.
  • Whooping cough in the early stages.

The action of the medicine is aimed at thinning sputum and accelerating its discharge. The medication has an expectorant, mucolytic, antispasmodic effect. The herbal preparation eliminates the inflammatory reaction and promotes the restoration of damaged mucous membranes.

Prospan is effective against bacteria, fungi, and eliminates spasm of smooth muscles of the airways. Thanks to flavonoids, microcirculation improves, and uric acid salts are removed from the body.

After regularly taking the drug, a nonproductive cough transforms into a wet cough. As a result, the patient coughs up phlegm, which is very important for recovery.

The therapeutic effect is manifested not due to inhibition of the cough center in the brain, but due to the elimination of spasm of bronchial smooth muscles. As a result, the lumen in the bronchial tree expands and breathing normalizes. The bronchial glands secrete more secretions, the mucus thins and is released faster.

Drug dosage

The syrup is taken orally; the bottle is shaken before use to ensure even distribution of particles.

Single dose of syrup:

Frequency of application – from 2 to 3 times. The duration of treatment depends on the patient's condition, but usually 7 days are enough. To consolidate the therapeutic effect, after the cough disappears, the drug is taken for another 3 days. If your cough does not go away, contact your doctor.

To accurately measure the dose, the kit includes a cup with a dispenser. Drops are taken orally before eating.

Single dose of the drug:

Take the product 3 to 5 times in 24 hours. If necessary, the drug is mixed with filtered water or milk. It is possible to use drops for inhalation, using standard nebulizers without heating. How to properly carry out inhalations for newborns and what medications to use, read the article at the link http://vskormi.ru/children/ingalyacii-grudnichkam/.

As mentioned earlier, this dosage form contains ethanol, and therefore the drug is diluted with water or saline in a 1:2 ratio before use. Otherwise, you can burn the mucous membranes.

20 - 25 drops are dripped into the liquid container. means, add water or saline solution in the above proportion. The frequency of nebulizer therapy is from 3 to 5 times in 24 hours.

The tablets are used for children over 4 years old; for this purpose they are dissolved in a glass of water. Syrup in bags is intended for patients over 6 years of age; knead it a little before use.

Precautionary measures

Prospan cough syrup should not be used if you are allergic to its components. If there are contraindications, allergies manifest in the form of rashes and itching. In addition, thanks to sorbitol, the syrup has a laxative effect. Under the supervision of a physician, the drug is taken by patients with fructose malabsorption.

Drops are contraindicated in children under 12 months of age if they are allergic to its components. In addition, the medication is dangerous for adults who suffer from alcohol addiction. Taking the drug increases the likelihood of allergies.

Syrup in bags is prohibited for use by patients under 6 years of age with hypersensitivity to its substances, sucrase-isomaltase deficiency, or impaired absorption of glucose-galactose into the small intestine. In this case, the likelihood of allergies, nausea, and epigastric pain increases. The laxative effect of the drug is rarely observed.

With an excessive increase in dose or prolonged use, nausea, vomiting, and loose bowel movements occur. If your child experiences these symptoms, stop taking the medication and consult a doctor. The doctor will rinse the stomach and provide symptomatic treatment.

Prospan is not recommended to be combined with antitussive medications (Codelac, Sinekod). Otherwise, the child will not be able to cough up, and sputum will accumulate in the respiratory tract. As a result, the number of harmful microorganisms increases, which damage the internal membranes, and the inflammatory reaction intensifies. For this reason, antitussives are given to children in the evening, and Prospan in the first half of the day.

During storage, the liquid becomes slightly cloudy, sediment forms at the bottom and the taste changes slightly, but this does not affect the therapeutic effect of the drug. As mentioned, the drops contain ethanol, 1 drop contains 13 mg of alcohol. Therefore, the drug affects concentration.

Diabetics should take the syrup with caution. During treatment, you need to constantly monitor the concentration of glucose in the blood. It is not recommended to take the drug before bedtime, as the child will not be able to sleep normally due to intense sputum discharge.

Substitute drugs

Products from the Prospan line are expensive, and therefore parents, in order to save money, are trying to choose a cheaper analogue. These are medicines based on herbal components, the active ingredient of which is also an extract from ivy leaves:

  • Gedelix is a cheaper analogue of Prospan, which eliminates spasm of the smooth muscles of the respiratory tract, thins mucus and facilitates their passage. This drug is also made in Germany, but it is only approved for children over 2 years of age.
  • Hederin is an antitussive drug for the treatment of productive and non-productive cough. The syrup is used for children from 12 months.
  • Herbion is also used for diseases of the airways, which are accompanied by wet and dry cough. The drug is indicated for patients from 2 years of age.
  • Pectolvan ivy is a herbal preparation for eliminating cough in children from 12 months.

When choosing a similar drug, pay attention to age restrictions and composition. After all, a child may be allergic to certain components. Before using any medication on children, consult your pediatrician.

Prospan can be found over the counter in any pharmacy. A 100 ml syrup costs 400 rubles, and for a 200 ml bottle you will pay 800 rubles.

Advantages of the drug

Prospan has the following advantages:

  • The drug does not contain alcohol (except for drops), dyes and sugar.
  • Children love the pleasant taste of the syrup.
  • A special cup allows you to measure the exact dose.
  • Thanks to the dispenser, it is impossible to pour out the medicine.
  • The drug is used to treat productive and non-productive cough.
  • Prospan does not react chemically with other medications (with the exception of antitussives, which make it difficult for mucus to clear from the bronchi).

Thus, Prospan is an effective medicine based on herbal ingredients that eliminates cough. The most suitable pharmaceutical form for children is syrup, which can be taken from birth. Before giving your child medicine, consult your pediatrician. Parents must follow the dosage and frequency of use determined by the doctor.

2 Comments to Prospan: drops and cough syrup for children

I’m now on my third day of drinking Prospan, and during the day I’m finally able to clear my throat well. I already feel better. This means that the doctor prescribed it to me correctly. I'll drink it for a couple more days and I think the cough will go away. It's also delicious.

Prospan is one of the few syrups that is approved for children under one year old. My daughter and I encountered a cough when she was only 7 months old. The pediatrician prescribed Prospan for us, she is very competent, she has been taking care of our eldest son since childhood, and I trust only her with my youngest son. Therefore, the question did not arise: to give or not to give syrup - it’s said, so it’s necessary! We drank the syrup for 5 days, the cough was cured, everything was fine, no allergic reactions occurred. And my daughter liked it, because it’s sweet, and the syrup does not contain sugar. I trust this drug.

“Prospan” for cough for infants and children from 1 year of age: instructions for use of syrup and drops, analogues of medicine

Prospan is a fairly popular cough remedy that has undergone clinical trials. This drug has been proven to be effective and safe and can be used to treat children. The medicine is produced in Germany, its basis is herbal ingredients. Let's consider what types of cough can be treated with Prospan, how the drug works, its composition and dosage.

Description of the drug

Prospan is made on the basis of ivy extract. This substance helps to liquefy mucus and facilitate its painless discharge. In addition, Prospan has the following properties:

  • expectorant - accelerates and simplifies the removal of sputum, reducing its viscosity;
  • mucolytic - thins thick mucus without increasing its volume;
  • antispasmodic - expands the bronchi, eliminating spasm, and prevents their subsequent narrowing.

When using Prospan, a dry, unproductive cough disappears, which is due to the bronchodilator properties of the drug. In some cases, an obsessive and dry cough transforms into a “wet”, productive cough with sputum production. This is how the mucolytic and expectorant properties of the drug work.

Today Prospan can be purchased at the pharmacy in three forms:

  • syrup in a glass container for children and adults, which comes with a dispenser lid;
  • syrup in miniature sachets, each containing 5 ml of liquid;
  • drops in a container with a dropper lid, used orally and also as inhalations.

Each type of drug has a different amount of active substance. This should be remembered before starting treatment:

  • per milliliter of syrup contains 7 mg of ivy extract in the form of dry powder - this applies to both the contents of the bottle and the bag;
  • per milliliter of drops – 20 mg of active substance.

When is Prospan prescribed?

Pediatricians and therapists prescribe Prospan for the treatment of various diseases of the upper respiratory tract, which are accompanied by a dry cough without sputum production. The instructions list the conditions for which this drug is effective:

  • acute, chronic, obstructive bronchitis;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • inflammatory processes of the respiratory system, the symptom of which is a cough with poorly discharged sputum.

Prospan for children is indicated for diseases such as tracheitis, laryngitis, pneumonia, influenza, pharyngitis, cystic fibrosis. According to the research results, it was revealed that the drug works not only effectively, but also quickly.

Approximately two days after the start of treatment, the dry cough becomes wet or disappears altogether. If you begin to relieve the symptom when the first signs of the disease appear, the problem is solved within 24 hours.

Dosage of the drug

In order not to make a mistake in the dosage of Prospan, you should strictly follow the recommendations described in the instructions for the drug. Much depends on the age of the child, the severity of his condition and the form of the medicine. In addition, in some cases, the doctor recommends taking the medication differently than indicated in the instructions. Let's consider at what age it makes sense to use this or that remedy:

Syrup

The syrup has a creamy chocolate hue and a cherry scent. The manufacturer indicates that the product contains no dyes, alcohol or sugar. Before giving the syrup to a child, the product must be shaken. Drug dosage:

To ensure that the child takes the correct dose, it is better to measure the required amount of medicine using a cup that is included in the package with the bottle. The course of treatment is determined by the doctor, but it cannot be less than 7 days. After the symptoms disappear, it is recommended to consolidate the result, for which you need to take the drug for another 2-3 days. If there is no effect, you should consult a doctor.

  • The syrup may have side effects: allergic manifestations, as well as a laxative effect due to the presence of sorbitol in the composition.
  • Contraindications to the use of the drug are hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. If a child has fructose intolerance, you should consult a doctor before using Prospan.

Drops for oral administration

Prospan drops are a liquid with a fennel aroma. The manufacturer indicates that it contains about 47% alcohol. A slight turbidity of the solution during storage of the drug is acceptable. The medicine does not contain sugar, preservatives or coloring substances.

When coughing, take the drops orally according to the instructions:

Drops are given to the patient before meals. It is acceptable to dilute the medicine with water or fruit juice.

  • The side effects of the drops are the same as those of the syrup - allergies are possible.
  • The solution is contraindicated for children under 12 months, as well as for those with hypersensitivity to its components. It is not recommended for use by people suffering from alcoholism due to the fact that the composition contains alcohol.

Drops for inhalation

If a child has enterovirus or rotavirus, vomiting can interfere with the absorption of the drug, so Prospan is used in the form of inhalations. Nebulizers that do not heat the medicine are suitable for high-quality nebulization.

When used by inhalation, drops are not prescribed to children under 2 years of age. To avoid irritation of the mucous membranes due to the high alcohol content in the medication, it should be diluted with water or saline solution - 1 measure of the drug to 2 measures of water. As a rule, drops diluted with saline are used for one procedure. To achieve an effect when coughing, the doctor usually recommends 3 to 5 inhalations daily.

Syrup in bags

The syrup in sachets has a light chocolate color and a pleasant aroma. Does not contain sugar, preservatives or dyes. How many sachets per day can I use? A single-use package contains 5 ml of syrup, which should be taken 3 times a day for adults and children over 6 years old.

The annotation states that the bag should be slightly kneaded before opening to achieve a homogeneous syrup.

  • Side effects, like the syrup in the bottle, are possible allergies. Some patients report nausea and stomach pain. In rare cases, diarrhea may occur due to the presence of sorbitol among the syrup ingredients.
  • Syrup in sachets is contraindicated for people with fructose intolerance, children with glucose-galactose malabsorption, and patients with isomaltose sucrase deficiency. Also, this form of Prospan is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.
  • In case of a significant overdose of the drug - if the amount entering the body exceeds the norm three times, vomiting and diarrhea are possible. In cases of overdose, consult a doctor.

Prospan can be taken with other medications; it combines well with antibiotics and other drugs. However, it should not be used with cough suppressants unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor.

Prospan's analogs

Analogues of Prospan include medications that help get rid of an unproductive, dry cough. Ivy extract as an active ingredient is used in many preparations of similar action, some of them are cheaper than Prospan. Based on ivy, Gedelix, Herbion, and Pectolvan Ivy are produced.

There are other cough medications that have a different active ingredient. For example, Ambroben uses ambroxol as a base. The same substance is found in its analogues - Lazolvan, AmbroHexal. The active ingredient Fenspiride is used in the drug Erespal and its analogue Erispirus.

All of these drugs have mucolytic, expectorant properties, and also suggest an antispasmodic effect. Before using each of them, it is worth studying the contraindications, since their list is longer than that of Prospan.

Prospan was used regularly for inhalation and was also given in the form of syrup. It helps a lot - a dry cough becomes wet, the child begins to cough. When other medications were used, the cough did not end for a long time. Sometimes they were treated for 2-3 months.

The first thing I give my child when he has a cough is Prospan. It is suitable for children and the composition is excellent - plant-based. It usually helps us quickly remove phlegm; it does not stagnate in the bronchi. The child is healthy, and I am calm.

I'm a pediatrician myself. Therefore, I approach the issue of treating my own children very carefully. The eldest son is 2.5 years old, the youngest was just born, he is 3 months old. I’ll tell you about the experience of treating a dry cough in my eldest son using inhalations with Prospan drops. On my own behalf, I would like to add that I did not see any information here that inhalations can be done for children from 2 years old. It is not recommended for younger people (and this is stated in the official instructions for Prospan drops) in order to avoid laryngospasm. We did inhalations 2 times a day. 18 drops were diluted with saline solution (or drinking water) in a ratio of 1:2. After 2 days from the start of inhalation treatment, the cough became more wet, and the son began to cough slowly. The separation and removal of sputum became easier. After the cough became moist (by the end of the third day), they began to give drops orally. They diluted it with water, but they still contain alcohol. The cough went away completely within a week, as it was not severe. I did not observe any allergic reactions. I am quite pleased with the result both as a pediatrician and as a dad.

Very valuable comment, thank you!

I like Prospan too! I myself took it in the form of a Prospan sachet, and my daughter took it in the form of syrup. Effective and gentle. Moreover, it is good for coughs, when the sputum is viscous and difficult to cough up. On the second day of taking it, I felt better, my cough became wetter, and I began to clear my throat. After a week, I stopped coughing completely. Therefore, of all types of syrups, Prospan comes first in our family!

Prospan: instructions for use, cough syrup for children

Prospan is an expectorant herbal preparation containing the active substance – dry extract of medicinal ivy leaves. Prospan is prescribed for the treatment of cough and belongs to the category of herbal medicines.

Herbal medicines are medicines prepared exclusively from plant materials - herbs, whole plants or their extracts. Herbal medicines are traditionally very widely used in the treatment of respiratory diseases in children.

Prospan is a German herbal preparation intended for the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Unlike many other herbal remedies, Prospan has been subjected to repeated clinical studies over half a century, which have proven that Prospan is an effective and safe natural remedy for the treatment of cough in adults and children with acute respiratory tract diseases.

The safety of Prospan has been studied in Germany since 1955. One of the largest studies was conducted in 2002. It involved children (0-12 years old) with various diseases of the bronchopulmonary system. Only 0.22% experienced side effects (mainly laxative, due to the sorbitol content of the drug). In 2007, a domestic study of the effectiveness and safety of the drug Prospan (syrup) was conducted in 13 large regions of Russia. It was included in the complex therapy of 5163 children (aged from one month to 14 years of age) suffering from ARVI (acute laryngotracheitis, acute bronchitis). No side reactions or undesirable effects were observed during its use, including in children with a history of atopic diseases (2.7%).

Prospan - indication for use

Prospan is a herbal cough medicine used as symptomatic therapy in the treatment of acute (pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, initial stages of whooping cough) and chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by cough with difficult to separate sputum.

Prospan reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its removal, and also has:

  • Expectorant action - in which the process of releasing mucus from the respiratory tract is facilitated mainly by reducing its viscosity.
  • Mucolytic effect, which reduces the viscosity and liquefaction of difficult-to-separate sputum, practically without increasing its volume.
  • The spasmolytic effect prevents the occurrence of bronchospasm (expands the bronchi and prevents the development of their narrowing).

Due to the bronchodilator effect of Prospan, a dry (non-productive), obsessive cough is stopped, and thanks to the expectorant and mucolytic effects, the cough is transformed (transferred) from dry to wet, patients begin to cough up sputum, which is an important principle in the treatment of cough. In addition, there is data on the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Prospan.

Prospan - instructions for use

Prospan is available in three forms:

  • cough syrup in dark glass bottles with a polyethylene dispenser stopper, with a screw cap;
  • cough syrup in sachet - in 5 ml sachets;
  • drops for oral administration and inhalation - in dark glass bottles equipped with a stopper - a dropper and a screw cap.

The release forms differ in the content of the active substance:

  • 1 ml of syrup (including sachet) contains 7 mg of dry ivy leaf extract;
  • 1 ml drops contain 20 mg of dry ivy leaf extract.

Instructions for use of Prospan in the form of syrup

Prospana in the form of syrup

Light brown, slightly cloudy syrup with a cherry scent. Does not contain alcohol, sugar or dyes. The syrup must be shaken before use!

Orally for infants (from birth to one year) 2.5 ml 2 times a day.

For young children (from 1 year to 6 years) 2.5 ml 3 times a day.

School-age children and adolescents: 5 ml 3 times a day.

Adults: 5-7.5 ml 3 times a day.

Dosing of the drug is done using a measuring cup. The course of treatment is determined by the severity of the disease, the minimum course of treatment should be 1 week. Instructions for use of Prospan in nebulizer therapy (for inhalation)

Inhalation for the treatment of cough with Prospan is carried out for enteviral and rotavirus infections accompanied by vomiting, which prevents normal absorption of the drug when taken orally.

For inhalations using Prospan in the form of drops, all standard devices and devices for nebulization without heating (nebulizers) are suitable.

To prevent side effects of irritation due to the content of ethyl alcohol, during inhalation the drug must be diluted with drinking water or saline in a ratio of 1:2.

Drop a drop into a special inhalation device and dilute with drinking water at room temperature or saline in a ratio of 1:2. Inhalations with Prospan should be carried out 3-5 times a day.

Instructions for use of Prospan in the form of syrup in separate sachets (Prospan sachet)

Prospan in the form of syrup

Light brown, slightly cloudy syrup with a fruity odor. Does not contain alcohol, sugar or dyes.

Orally for adults and children over 6 years of age, take the contents of 1 sachet (5 ml) 3 times a day. Before use, slightly knead the bag.

The syrup in individual sachets is already dosed in the required quantity for 1 dose; it is very convenient to take with you or give to children at school. The sachets do not take up much space, they do not require dissolution in water, and they do not need to be washed down.

Side effects: Allergic reactions are possible. Rare cases of nausea and pain in the epigastric region have been described. Very rarely, when used, a laxative effect may be observed (due to the sorbitol content).

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, sucrase/isomaltase deficiency, fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, children (up to 6 years of age).

The duration of treatment with Prospan for all forms of release is determined in each specific case depending on the severity of the disease. However, the minimum course of treatment should be at least 1 week. To consolidate the therapeutic effect, it is recommended to continue treatment for another 2-3 days after the symptoms of the disease disappear. If there is no improvement in your condition, you should consult a doctor.

Overdose for all formulations: Taking a dose significantly higher than the prescribed daily dose (more than 3 times) may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In this case, you need to consult a doctor.

Interaction with other drugs for all forms of release: Prospan can be used simultaneously with other drugs (except antitussives), for example with antibiotics. The drug should not be used simultaneously with antitussive drugs, as this makes it difficult to cough up liquefied sputum.

Prospan's analogs

Complete analogues of Prospan in terms of the active substance (ivy leaf extract) are herbal preparations with mucolytic, antispasmodic and expectorant effects:

  • Herbion ivy syrup (Slovenia)
  • Gedelix (Germany)

Another product that contains liquid extract of ivy leaves is the drug Bronchipret (Germany). This drug is available in the form of drops and syrup and can also be called an analogue of Prospan, since it is used as an expectorant in the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by cough and the formation of thick and viscous sputum.

Information about the drug is provided on the basis of the instructions for use of the drug included in the State Register of Medicines.

Prospan syrup is a safe and effective way to relieve a child of a cough: instructions for use

A debilitating dry cough, causing children to wake up at night from attacks, causes real suffering for both young patients and their parents. I would like to help the child, to alleviate the unpleasant symptom as soon as possible. Prospan syrup is a product that has proven its effectiveness over more than 50 years of practical use.

In numerous reviews, parents of treated children note the quick results from using the drug. Like all medicines based on natural ingredients, it inspires the trust of mothers with its safety.

Prospan reduces the viscosity of sputum, and it is easily removed by coughing.

Description of the drug and principle of action

Prospan is an effective mucolytic of plant origin, produced by Engelhard Arzneimittel (Germany). Unlike many other herbal remedies, the remedy discussed in our review has been subjected to repeated studies. A study of the characteristics of the drug confirmed its effectiveness and safety.

The active substance in the composition is ivy extract. It is this ingredient that explains a large number of valuable properties of Prospan:

During the studies, it was found that the drug also has an antifungal effect and has a negative effect on intestinal parasites.

Without blocking the work of the cough center located in the brain, Prospan relaxes the muscles of the bronchial tree, resulting in normal breathing. At the same time, the medicine thins the mucus and makes it easier to expectorate.

In addition to syrup, the medicine is available in the form:

Why do children like syrup so much?

For children, syrup (compared to other forms) is the best option. It has a convenient consistency and, what is important for the youngest patients, a pleasant cherry taste. The product contains no sugar, alcohol or dyes.

The syrup is sold in bottles of 100 and 200 ml. Each box contains detailed instructions for use (download instructions in pdf format) and a convenient plastic cup that makes it easy to measure age-appropriate doses.

The viscous syrup is brown in color. Since Prospan is a plant-based product, the appearance of a cloudy sediment is acceptable, which does not affect the effectiveness of the product. The opened bottle should be stored out of reach of the ubiquitous children's hands at room temperature under a tightly screwed cap.

The syrup has a pleasant taste, children will readily drink it.

You can buy syrup at any pharmacy without a prescription. The average price of a 100 ml bottle is 400 rubles, the cost of a 200 ml bottle is 800 rubles.

Indications

Prospan is indicated for diseases of the upper respiratory tract (both acute and chronic forms), the symptom of which is a dry, unproductive cough or a cough with sputum that is difficult to separate. The instructions spell out ailments that can be effectively cured (or alleviated) by Prospan syrup:

  • bronchitis, both acute and chronic;
  • bronchial obstruction;
  • inflammatory processes affecting the respiratory system and manifesting themselves through a cough with difficult discharge of viscous, thick sputum;
  • bronchial asthma.

The drug is often prescribed to children for tracheitis, pneumonia, laryngitis, influenza, pharyngitis, and cystic fibrosis.

In the course of research, it was proven in practice that children's syrup saves coughs very quickly. The same fact is confirmed by reviews from parents. Already on the third day, in most cases, the cough becomes easier and more productive. If treatment is started at an early stage of the disease, the painful symptom disappears literally within a day.

The medicine can be taken by children up to one year old.

Dosage and administration

The syrup is indicated for the treatment of children under 1 year of age, as it consists entirely of natural ingredients. There are not many safe cough remedies for babies that are highly effective, and Prospan is one of them.

  • For children under one year of age, the dosage of syrup when taken twice a day is 2.5 ml.
  • Preschoolers (1-6 years old) are recommended to take the drug three times a day, 2.5 ml.
  • Schoolchildren and teenagers are also recommended to take three times a day, but 5 ml each.

Prospan will also help adults; the norm for them is 5-7.5 ml three times a day.

For children, it is allowed to dilute the medicine with a small amount of water. It is more convenient to give it to babies a few months old through a syringe.

Nothing complicated: the syrup can be diluted with water.

The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the pediatrician: usually it is a week (sometimes 10 days).

The drug in the form of drops and effervescent tablets is also used to treat children.

Prospan drops can be taken orally or used for inhalation. Effervescent tablets forming bubbles that are pleasant to children's eyes are dissolved in water (preferably warm). After this, the liquid should be drunk immediately.

Contraindications

Natural plant-based syrup has a minimum of contraindications.

For parents of diabetic children, it is important to know that 2.5 ml of product = 0.08 bread unit.

With caution and only as prescribed and under the supervision of a physician, Prospan treatment of children with severe liver and brain diseases is permissible.

Overdose

Cases of overdose were recorded only when the recommended dose was exceeded three times. Symptoms of the condition include vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. In such cases, discontinuation of the medication and treatment aimed at eliminating these symptoms is indicated.

Side effects

The study of the side effects of Prospan has been conducted since the middle of the last century. During this time, thousands of children of different ages took part in the study. In most cases, there were no undesirable consequences. Allergic reactions were very rarely observed: itching, urticaria, swelling of the mucous membranes, rash. The sorbitol contained in the syrup can sometimes cause loose stools.

Interaction

Prospan should not be taken with drugs that block the cough reflex (Sinekod, Codelac, Stoptussin, etc.). Failure to comply with the recommendation threatens stagnation of sputum in the trachea. And this contributes to the proliferation of bacteria, damage to the mucous membrane, and increased inflammation.

Prospan does not react with other medications, so its combination with antibiotics is acceptable.

Analogs

Analogues of Prospan are drugs whose action is aimed at eliminating dry cough. The active ingredient in such herbal preparations is ivy extract. These medications include:

  • Gedelix;
  • Gederin;
  • Gerbion;
  • Pectolvan Ivy.

A popular analogue of Prospan - Gedelix - the drug helps get rid of the reason why a child has a cough.

The range of contraindications and side effects of some of these drugs, compared to Prospan, is somewhat wider.

Reviews

Here are reviews from mothers who treated their children with Prospan.

“My daughter got sick for the first time when she was barely three months old. I was in a panic: I couldn’t even imagine how such a baby could be treated. The pediatrician prescribed Prospan. The box contains a measuring cup: it can be used to easily measure the required amount of syrup. I gave the baby medicine with a syringe. Two days later my daughter felt better.”

“My 4-year-old son gets sick often. We go to kindergarten for two weeks - then we spend a month on sick leave. The disease is almost always accompanied by a severe cough. We tried everything, but Prospan helped my child the fastest of all means. Now, when we are sick, we usually use it.”

“The youngest son is often sick; the eldest son brings the infection every now and then. An acute respiratory infection is accompanied by a debilitating cough, the baby cannot even sleep peacefully. I am careful when choosing medications - we are allergic. Fortunately, there was no reaction to Prospan. Despite the pleasant cherry taste, which my picky person liked, the medicine contains no sugar. The syrup turned out to be effective: just a couple of days, and the cough went away completely.”

Summary

Prospan is a plant-based mucolytic. Its effectiveness is confirmed by research results and positive reviews from parents. The medicine has a minimum of contraindications and rarely causes undesirable consequences. The syrup has a pleasant taste. It is convenient to measure it with the cup that comes with the bottle. Safe and natural Prospan syrup is suitable even for treating babies up to one year old.

Well, yes, I agree, its taste is unusual for a syrup, there is no such nasty smell of medicine. In general, I feel its aftertaste is caramel. Although there is no sugar, it is sweetish, and the child drinks it without any difficulties because of this. By the way, there were no allergies either, although I gave it for the first time at 7 months, under the supervision of a pediatrician, of course, but still, now it’s already 2 months, while we’re buying it. The sputum clears up quickly, the cough goes away gradually, it lasted 5 days at most for me, it took a little longer for the child, maybe because the dosage is lower and the baby is large. Somehow we accidentally drank more than the daily norm (I gave it to my dad too) - there were no reactions, everything was fine.

To properly treat a cough, you need to know what kind of cough is bothering you. Most often when my son has a cold, it is dry. And Prospan usually helps us. It removes mucus and makes coughing easier.

Taking a nap helps not only against dry coughs, but also against wet coughs, by the way. My son was so exhausted the last time he was sick, there was so much phlegm, but it was difficult to get rid of! The pediatrician prescribed Prospan - it turned out to be a very good remedy, compared with Gedelix, for example, Prospan is thicker and more pleasant to the taste. Sasha accepted him with pleasure, without refusal or tears. On the second day, the sputum began to disappear well. 6 days, it seems, and there were only residual effects from the cough. The product comes with detailed instructions and a measuring cup for dosing. And at the tip of the bottle there is a “spout” so as not to spill too much.
