Why does my nose itch?

Itching in the nose: what are the reasons and what to do?

Sometimes there is an unpleasant feeling of itching, itching, irritation in the nose, it seems that something is in the way. Most often, itching leads to the fact that a person begins to sneeze, sometimes several times in a row.

Table of contents:

If this sensation occurs once, then it does not cause much alarm - it is a normal physiological reaction.

But it also happens that your nose begins to itch regularly - and this is already a reason to think about the reasons that cause this annoying symptom. In the article we will look at the question of the reasons that cause the unpleasant sensation of itching in the nose. In addition, we will find out what to do and how to cope with this unpleasant manifestation.

Causes

The immediate “culprit” of this unpleasant sensation is irritation of the nasal mucosa. But this irritation can be caused by various factors. Let's take a closer look at them.

Allergy

A common and very likely cause of itching in the deposit. An allergic reaction of this kind is most often caused by volatile irritants that enter the nasal cavity: dust, lint and fur, pollen, and other allergens. In addition to the above, an allergic reaction to eggs, nuts, citrus fruits, strawberries, some medications and mold often occurs.

When exposed to an irritant, the cells of the nasal mucosa are the first to react. Along with itching, swelling will most likely occur: severe or not, depends on the immune system and the nature of the allergen. In addition, in this case, a runny nose often occurs, which is why this disease is called “allergic rhinitis.” This article explains how to understand whether an allergy or a cold has occurred, and how this problem can be dealt with with home remedies.

Infectious diseases

Various respiratory diseases, inflammatory processes, rhinitis are the most common causes of itching in the nose. In this case, itching and irritation in the nasal cavity will necessarily be combined with other symptoms: coughing, sneezing, fever, weakness, etc. In addition to the types of infections already mentioned, the following microbes can affect the nasal mucosa:

Vascular tone

This is also a very likely cause of itching. In this case, we are talking about the vessels lining the nasal mucosa. Often, improper (too long) use of vasoconstrictor drops leads to vascular tone.

Does the photo show vascular tone?

That is why the use of these funds is usually limited to five days. If you use the drops longer, the mucous membrane becomes accustomed to them, and it stops fighting germs on its own.

These are not all the reasons. In rare cases, there may be other factors that provoke itching.

Provoking factors

Itching in the nose is sometimes caused by external influences, by eliminating which you can get rid of the irritating symptom. Let's find out what moments can cause itching in the nasal cavity.

  • Strong unpleasant odor. But there may also be perfumes in a highly concentrated dose.
  • Staying on a polluted street or in a smoky room also contributes to the feeling of itching and irritation in the nose.
  • Mechanical trauma to the nose involving its mucous membrane is a likely cause of itching.
  • Sometimes too hot weather and dry air lead to an irritating itching sensation.

Some medications can cause dry mucous membranes and sometimes itching. Such drugs include, for example, drugs with atropine.

How to treat a sore inside the nose, and which medications are the most effective, is described in great detail in this article.

This article explains why sores in the nose do not go away, and what means can be used to get rid of it.

Here's how to use Isofra nasal spray, and how effective this product is. This article explains it in great detail.

Treatment

Let's find out what measures can be taken to put the nasal mucosa in order and get rid of annoying itching.

We recommend that before treating this symptom, you first find out its nature and cause. To do this, you need to go to the doctor for an examination. It is advisable to do this when the itching has been going on for some time, and its “attacks” occur regularly. The doctor will determine the cause of the symptom and prescribe treatment to eliminate it.

Methods

Washing

If the itching sensation is caused by dry indoor air or outdoor heat, then regular rinsing with sea water may help. AquaMaris solution and others like it are perfect for this. But you can prepare washing solutions with your own hands.

To do this, dissolve one teaspoon of real sea salt in a liter of boiled, chilled water. But how to rinse the nose of an infant with Aquamaris is described in detail in this article.

Antihistamines

If itching is caused by an allergic reaction, taking these medications is a necessity. They should be prescribed by a doctor after examination and an accurate diagnosis. Doctors especially recommend the following highly effective drugs:

Zodak in tablets

These medications provide noticeable benefits, however, you need to know that long-term use is unacceptable. In some cases, it can even lead to weakening of the heart.

In addition to the remedies already listed, the following medications do an excellent job:

The latter drug is a spray that can have a targeted local effect, eliminating allergens directly on the mucous membrane.

Allergen-specific therapy

If specialists were able to accurately identify the allergen irritant, this procedure can be performed. Its essence lies in the gradual “accustoming” of the body to a given stimulus. To do this, a person is first given a small dose of the allergen, and after it is “digested” - a large one.

On video why your nose itches when you have a cold:

And they continue this until the body begins to show an adequate reaction even to real doses of the allergen - those that are found in everyday life. This therapy takes a lot of time, but after its successful completion the person is freed from allergies to this irritant for the rest of his life.

Lubrication of the mucosa

The topical drug Cromoglycan sodium can be used to eliminate allergic itching in the nose, even in children. In addition, it is recommended to use a remedy such as Nazaval to relieve irritation of the mucous membrane. This drug forms a thin membrane on the mucous membrane, which will not allow allergens to have their negative effects.

Vasoconstrictor drugs

These remedies will only help if the itching is not caused by vascular tone. Their effect is powerful, but such drops cannot be used for a long time: a maximum of five days.

Irrigation

To eliminate dryness and tickling in the nose, irrigating the mucous membrane with special preparations with sea salt or other ingredients is excellent. The beneficial effects of irrigation are indispensable for this problem: the procedure will moisturize the mucous membrane and have an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect.

Antiseptics

Local bactericidal preparations will have a calming effect on the nasal mucosa. In addition, these products will help eliminate harmful microbes from the surface of the mucosa. The following drugs are suitable:

Antiviral

If the itching in the nose is caused by a viral infection, you cannot do without drugs that counteract this scourge. Doctors recommend using safe antiviral agents based on interferon, a natural protein. Such drugs include Anaferon, familiar to many.

Surgery

If itching is caused by an enlarged venous network in the lower part of the nasal cavity, that is, the symptom will not go away on its own, surgical methods may also be used. The operation is performed using laser, ultrasound or cryo-technology. During the intervention, the “culprit” of itching in the nose is eliminated - the dilated venous network.

Injections

Sometimes, in order to bring the vessels of the mucous membrane back to normal, injections are used to deliver the necessary drugs locally and more specifically.

Physiotherapy

These methods have a remarkable effect on the condition of the mucous membrane: they warm it up, eliminate microbes, relieve swelling and inflammation. Procedures such as laser, ultrasound, infrared radiation or electrophoresis can quickly restore the functioning of the mucous membrane and eliminate annoying itching.

Traditional methods

Let's consider what methods and means of an alternative approach to medicine can be used in this case.

If itching is caused by colds or a runny nose, you can warm your nose with hot boiled eggs wrapped in cloth. Bags filled with heated sea salt are also suitable for this purpose.

A very useful procedure is rinsing the nose. Traditional medicine advises for this purpose to use water with sea salt, soda solution, decoctions of medicinal herbs: chamomile, sage, St. John's wort, calendula, coltsfoot, lungwort.

If Kalanchoe grows at home, then the juice of the leaves of this useful plant can be used for instillation into the nose for itching. The juice should be used fresh, instilling five drops into the nostril during each procedure.

In the event that symptoms appear as a result of a cold, more warm and hot drinks containing honey and lemon are recommended.

If self-treatment or even that prescribed by a doctor does not bring a positive result, you need to see a doctor again. In this case, a more detailed examination and a more accurate diagnosis may be required. It is necessary to eliminate itching in the nose, because if it continues, nosebleeds and rhinosinusitis with suppuration cannot be ruled out.

General Tips

Ventilate the room more often. It doesn’t hurt to use a humidifier in winter, which will turn the dry air in the room into one that is optimal for inhalation and does not irritate the mucous membranes.

Wet cleaning on a regular basis will help rid your apartment of more allergy-causing dust.

We also recommend that you stop smoking. This habit in itself is not the most useful, and in addition, it also provokes dry mucous membranes, causing various unpleasant manifestations.

We examined the features of such a sensation as itching in the nose. As you can see, this unpleasant and annoying symptom can be caused by several reasons, and some of them make you think seriously about your health. We still recommend that you consult a doctor if the itching occurs regularly and causes severe discomfort.

I remember as a child, in the village it was impossible to get medicine, they were treated only with folk remedies, so to speak, what my grandmother prescribed. It is correctly stated - dry heat and rinsing the nose with chamomile help best of all and for prevention, viburnum, currant juice, or warm tea with raspberry jam. I am now doing the same for my grandchildren. And the efficiency is higher and we save money.

Acute rhinitis: causes and manifestations

Acute rhinitis is an acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. The disease is widespread in both children and adults.

Acute rhinitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, caused by a variety of reasons. The most common form, infectious rhinitis, is popularly called runny nose. The disease is widespread in both children and adults. Acute rhinitis, under unfavorable circumstances, can become chronic, which has a longer course.

Read also: What is a runny nose and how to treat it

Infectious rhinitis

Infectious agents can be viruses (adenovirus, rhinovirus, coronavirus, etc.), and less commonly, bacteria and fungi. As a rule, the addition of a bacterial infection indicates the transition of a runny nose to a chronic form.

Of great importance for the occurrence of acute rhinitis is general or local hypothermia of the body, which leads to a weakening of protective mechanisms and local immunity. As a result, bacteria that are constantly present in the nasal cavity become pathogenic and begin to multiply, causing inflammation.

Allergic rhinitis

Acute allergic rhinitis is a manifestation of an allergic reaction to inhaled allergens. It can be seasonal (one of the manifestations of hay fever - an allergic reaction to the pollen of flowering plants), that is, it occurs at certain times of the year when certain plants bloom. Or year-round - occurring when an allergen comes into contact with the nasal mucosa. For example, upon contact with the fur or saliva of pets, waste products of house dust mites, with book dust when visiting a library or archive storage room.

Also, acute rhinitis can result from exposure to caustic chemicals, smoke, or simply cold air. These cases are not related to allergies.

Symptoms of rhinitis

As a rule, acute rhinitis has three stages of development:

  • Dry irritation (dry)
  • Serous discharge (wet)
  • Mucopurulent discharge (purulent)

The stage of dry irritation does not last long, usually a few hours, less often – up to 1-2 days. The blood vessels of the mucous membrane at this stage are dilated and overflowing with blood (mucosal hyperemia), the mucous membrane itself is dry. There are unpleasant sensations of burning, irritation in the nose, in a word, “itching” in the nose. I want to sneeze uncontrollably, and tears often flow from my eyes. At the same time, a headache, malaise occurs, and the temperature may rise slightly (to subfebrile levels). Then swelling appears, the nasal passages narrow, nasal breathing becomes difficult, and nasal congestion develops. There may also be loss of the ability to distinguish smells and disturbances in the sense of taste.

These symptoms indicate the development of the second stage of acute rhinitis - the stage of serous discharge. From the dilated and overcrowded small-caliber vessels, the permeability of the walls of which increases under conditions of inflammation, the liquid fraction of blood—plasma—begins to sweat (“leak”). The serous fluid formed as a result of this process permeates the surrounding tissues. Inflammation also leads to increased mucus secretion by goblet cells. Swelling of the mucous membrane and copious mucous-serous discharge from the nose are characteristic signs of this stage of acute rhinitis. This discharge contains ammonia and sodium chloride in fairly large quantities, which explains why skin irritation occurs on the upper lip, around the nasal passages and on the wings of the nose.

Course of the disease

If you have a strong immune system, acute rhinitis can go away on its own in 2-3 days. Otherwise, on the fourth or fifth day of the disease, it enters the stage of mucopurulent discharge. At this stage, nasal discharge becomes yellowish-greenish in color, which is associated with the appearance of blood cells (leukocytes, lymphocytes) and rejected epithelial cells in them. Over the next few days, there may be a decrease in secretion production, restoration of nasal breathing, improvement in general condition, and after 8–14 days, a cure. But in the absence of adequate treatment or with a weakened immune system, the disease can last for 3-4 weeks, and there is a high risk of it becoming chronic. The severity and duration of symptoms of acute rhinitis depends on the condition of the nasal mucosa. If it is atrophied, then they will be less pronounced, and the acute period will be shorter. With hypertrophy of the mucous membrane, on the contrary, the symptoms will be more pronounced and the course will last longer.

Acute rhinitis can cause ear congestion and even hearing loss. This is due to the spread of inflammation to the mouths of the auditory (Eustachian) tubes, which open into the nasopharynx. Inflammation prevents their normal opening, as a result of which negative pressure is created in the tympanic cavity of the ear and sound transmission is disrupted.

Complications of rhinitis

In children, acute rhinitis often leads to the spread of inflammation to the mucous membrane of the pharynx with the development of nasopharyngitis or deeper into the respiratory tract, affecting the larynx, trachea, and bronchi. A common complication of rhinitis in children is acute otitis media (ear inflammation). This is facilitated by the structural features of their nasopharynx, short and wide eustachian tube.

The main thing in diagnosing acute rhinitis is to identify the cause of its occurrence. This will allow the doctor to prescribe the correct treatment.

Itching in the nose, throat and eyes: why, what to do, how and what to treat at home

Not all patients who come to see a general practitioner or otolaryngologist can clearly talk about their complaints. Sometimes you will meet patients who express themselves in a non-standard way, using the colloquial expression “itching,” and most often in relation to diseases of the nasopharynx. So, if you hear “itching in the nose,” this means that a person is experiencing uncomfortable sensations of irritation, dryness, itching or burning.

As we understand, the organs of the nasopharynx are interconnected, so not only the nose, but also the throat often suffers, and in cases of severe runny nose, also the eyes. Therefore, it can itch there too.

Let's find out why this happens, what can be done at home, how and with what to treat the inflamed organs of the ear, nose and throat.

Why itching in the nose: reasons

A feeling of itching or itching in the nose indicates irritation of its mucous membrane. The causes of such a reaction are the onset of an inflammatory process caused by internal or external causes: decreased immunity, activation of a chronic source of infection, foreign agents - microbes and allergens, dust, chemicals with a pungent odor.

Most often the reasons are the following:

  1. Exacerbation of chronic diseases of the nasopharynx.
  2. Acute rhinitis.
  3. Vasomotor runny nose.
  4. Dusty and dry air.
  5. Use of vasoconstrictor drops.

Foreign bodies in the nasal passages cannot be excluded, but this is mainly characteristic of children. In adults, one can also assume the consequences of injuries and operations when the mucous membrane has not yet completely healed, or a curvature of the nasal septum in the form of a spike, which constantly irritates the nasal wall. The formation of crusts in atrophic rhinitis is another likely factor that provokes prolonged itching. And each situation requires differential diagnosis.

The cause of the itching sensation can be determined based on the results of the examination. As in other situations, it begins with an analysis of complaints and a medical examination. At the initial stage, it is important to identify all (subjective and objective) symptoms of the pathological condition in order to establish a preliminary diagnosis.

Acute rhinitis. An infectious runny nose is the first thing you should think about when you experience nasal irritation. It is dryness, tickling, itching and burning that manifests the first phase of acute rhinitis. There will be no discharge yet, but the body temperature may rise and, most likely, general malaise will appear. Often, lacrimation is added to the symptoms of a runny nose.

The next stage begins with the appearance of profuse serous discharge that literally flows from the nose. The feeling of congestion gradually increases. Subsequently, the snot acquires a thicker consistency and a yellow-green tint. Over time, nasal breathing is restored, and complete recovery occurs within 7–10 days.

If acute rhinitis is one of the manifestations of a cold or acute respiratory viral infection, then in combination with the above symptoms, intoxication will become stronger (headaches, weakness and fatigue), sore throat and sore throat will appear, often with a cough. When examining the nasal cavity, you may notice swelling and redness of the mucous membrane, and the presence of discharge.

In acute rhinitis, itching and tickling in the nose appear in the first phase of the inflammatory process, when irritation of the mucous membrane occurs.

Vasomotor runny nose. A runny nose that develops due to vascular dysfunction is called vasomotor. It comes in two types: allergic and neurovegetative. The first is provoked by substances to which the body has developed hypersensitivity, and the second is observed against the background of hormonal disorders (including during pregnancy), with prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drops. But in both cases the symptoms are similar:

  1. Paroxysmal sneezing.
  2. Copious serous discharge.
  3. Itchy nose.
  4. Tearing.

An allergic runny nose is often accompanied by conjunctivitis and redness of the eyes, which also itch. Rhinitis can be combined with atopic dermatitis or bronchial asthma.

Atrophic rhinitis. A chronic inflammatory process in the nose with trophic disorders can also give a similar picture. The mucous membrane becomes thinner, the discharge becomes scanty, but very viscous. They dry out to form crusts, which further irritate the epithelium. As a result, patients feel as if something is itching in their nose.

At the same time, the sense of smell decreases, and nasal congestion persists for a long time. Nosebleeds are likely due to forced removal of the crusts.

Itching in the nose and throat: what to do, how and what to treat

The exact origin of the itching can be determined based on the results of additional diagnostics. In acute or atrophic rhinitis, everything can be understood even with rhinoscopy. In the latter case, the mucous membrane looks thinned, pale, with pockets of thick mucus and crusts, and small vessels are clearly visible through it.

But in case of vasomotor rhinitis, to find out the reasons, you will need to carry out allergy tests and donate blood for immunoglobulins. And only after this can treatment begin.

Without knowing the origin of the pathology and the exact diagnosis, there can be no talk of any treatment.

Therapeutic tactics consist in primarily eliminating the causative factors that provoke changes in the mucous membrane.

If irritation in the nose appears due to dry or dusty air, then you will have to think about moisturizing and cleaning it.

In production, it is necessary to use personal respiratory protection equipment (masks, respirators). Other conditions require more specific therapy.

Traditional treatment in official medicine

Rhinitis requires the use of medications. Based on the clinical situation, the following drugs are used in complex treatment:

  1. Saline solutions (Salin, Humer, Aqua Maris).
  2. Vasoconstrictors (Nazivin, Tizin, Vibrocil).
  3. Antimicrobial (Isofra, Polydexa).
  4. Antiviral (Nazoferon).
  5. Antihistamines (Allergodil, Lecrolin).
  6. Topical corticosteroids (Flixonase, Nasonex).
  7. Immunotropic (Derinat).

However, nasal decongestants (vasoconstrictors) should be used for no more than 5–7 days, otherwise there is a risk of drug-induced (vasomotor) runny nose.

For atrophic rhinitis, oil drops, applications with glycerin and iodine, and ointments with sea salt are used. As part of the conservative treatment of acute and chronic runny nose, physiotherapy (UHF, ultraviolet irradiation, helium-neon laser, pulsed currents) is actively used.

In case of exacerbations of chronic tonsillitis, appropriate treatment of the throat is necessary, see the situations described on the website:

Folk remedies at home

In no case should folk remedies be opposed to traditional treatment. They are not an alternative, but can only be used as an addition to the main therapy. Common methods to reduce itching and tickling in the nose include the following:

  1. Warming with salt in a bag or boiled egg.
  2. Rinse with saline solution, herbal decoctions (calendula, sage, chamomile).
  3. Instillation of aloe juice.

But when using herbal ingredients, you should remember that they can cause an allergic reaction, increasing the discomfort in the nose. Therefore, it is not recommended to use such methods without the approval of a doctor.

The feeling of itching and tickling in the nose is familiar to many. If such symptoms persist for a long time and are accompanied by other signs of pathology, then you should seek medical help. For what reasons is itching in the nose and what to do in a particular case, the doctor will tell you.

Itchy throat and cough: what to do at home?

On the video channel “Reviews and reviews of Tiande, Farmasi, Gano, DXN, HaoGang products.”

Good day, dear friends, My name is Lyubov Boyko and today I want to talk about, in my opinion, useful throat lozenges with Ganoderma (that is, with Lingzhi mushroom). These are Zee Mint Plus Lozenges from the Malaysian company DXN - They instantly relieve sore throat, soothe the throat and cool it.

A package of lollipops will last you and your family for 6 months or maybe more. The package contains 12 bags of 25 pieces. There are 300 lollipops in total.

If ordinary lozenges from the pharmacy simply soothe your throat, then ZHI MINT Plus Lollipops with Ganoderma also work to improve the health of the upper respiratory tract.

I use them myself, they really soothe the throat as soon as you put them in your mouth, and the recovery comes much faster than usual. These lollipops can also be given to children when their throat starts to hurt. I gave my 4-year-old son one lollipop 2 times a day; if the child is smaller, you can divide the lollipop in half.

Lollipops with Ganoderma ZHI MINT Plus are an excellent alternative to pharmacy lozenges.

Why buy lollipops at the pharmacy individually, if you can buy 300 pieces of lollipops at once and provide yourself and your loved ones with health for many months. Sore throat and cough? Ganoderma lozenges will soothe your throat, relieve sore throat, help stop coughing and remove phlegm. Sore throat and cough?

What to do if your nose is constantly itching and itching?

Sometimes, seemingly for no apparent reason, an unbearable feeling of itching suddenly occurs in the sinuses, causing a prolonged attack of sneezing that cannot be stopped. The reason for this itching in the nose lies in irritation of the mucous membrane.

In most cases, the discomfort that triggers a sneezing attack is caused by an allergic reaction to something (for example, pollen). If itching in the nose is accompanied by swelling, you need to consult a specialist who will prescribe vasoconstrictors. However, you should not get carried away with them, since they very quickly become addictive, which is difficult to get rid of in the future.

To eliminate the feeling of itching in the nose, special preparations for rinsing the nasal sinuses are often prescribed, and traditional medicine is also used for the same purpose.

Itching in the nose: the first signs

Sometimes symptoms such as nasal itching and sneezing are not enough to determine a specific pathology, so when making a diagnosis it is necessary to identify other causes and signs of the disease. You should not carry out diagnostics, much less treatment, on your own, but it is better to contact a specialist (otolaryngologist or allergist), who will definitely prescribe a nasal culture to determine the type of microorganisms that caused the pathology.

Most often, the cause of itching in the sinuses is the presence of various irritants and external factors. Often itching occurs due to strong odors and trauma to the nose. But in some cases, the problem arises against the background of the development of an infectious disease.

Allergic reactions

Penetration of an allergen (histamine) into the body is accompanied by a reaction of the cells of the mucous membrane of the nasal sinuses. The irritant provokes the development of the inflammatory process and swelling. At the same time, there is an increase in the production of nasal mucus by the glands. Itching in the nose is nothing more than the body’s reaction to the production of secretions and the penetration of foreign particles into the body, while the person begins to sneeze intensely. Among the most common histamines are the following:

  • Pets;
  • food allergens (nuts, eggs, strawberries, citrus fruits, etc.);
  • medicines;
  • mold;
  • household chemicals.

Vascular tone

One of the reasons for the development of unpleasant sensations in the nose is a change in vascular tone. This may be caused by taking vasoconstrictor drugs or dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Exposure to chemicals

Often the reason for an itching and itching in the nose is harmful substances contained in the air. At home, this could be household chemicals; at work, it could be chemical impurities that are part of, for example, smoke.

But regardless of the nature of the origin, any irritation of the mucous membrane will be accompanied by a runny nose, swelling and itching.

Among the infections that cause itching in the nose are colds and flu. You can recognize them by the following characteristic features:

  • Mucus secretion;
  • redness and swelling of the wings of the nose;
  • labored breathing;
  • sneezing;
  • general malaise;
  • headache;
  • tearfulness;
  • redness of the eyes;
  • decreased performance.

In addition, the cause of itching in the nose can be a microscopic mite living in the epidermis. The favorite habitats of the parasite are precisely areas with delicate, clean skin.

Separately, I would like to say about insect bites. Bites can also cause itching in the sinuses, swelling, and sharp pain that disappears over time. You need to know that in addition to itching in the nose, bites of some types of insects can provoke the development of brucellosis, typhus, anthrax, encephalitis and plague, since they are carriers of these diseases. Therefore, if itching in the nose occurs, accompanied by symptoms of the above pathologies, it is necessary to urgently consult a doctor, otherwise the consequences can be quite serious, even fatal.

In case of nasal injuries, there are always ruptures of the skin tissue both on the inside and on the outside. After the swelling subsides and the wound begins to heal, the person begins to sneeze and itching occurs, which is a natural reaction of the body. During the process of tissue regeneration, new vessels appear and at the same time, active growth of nerve endings occurs, which provokes itching and itching in the nose.

Itchy nose: what to do?

First of all, you need to visit the office of an allergist or otolaryngologist to conduct a diagnosis and identify the cause of swelling and runny nose, especially if such symptoms are constantly present. Further treatment will be aimed at eliminating the symptoms and the original source.

Itching and itching in the nose, which occurs in hot weather and is caused by excessive dryness of the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, are eliminated with the help of moisturizing drops (for example, Aquamaris), as well as rinsing. The period of use of this drug is unlimited, since it is not addictive.

If an allergen (histamine) is identified, allergen-specific therapy is carried out. The principle of its action is to introduce a small dose of the allergen into the body and then increase it. Gradually, the body gets used to the stimulus and stops reacting to it. In this way, breathing difficulties also disappear.

Taking antihistamines, which come in the form of drops or tablets. The most popular of them are the following:

The above drugs should not be used for a long time, as this can lead to weakening of cardiac activity.

When treating itching, you can use the topical drug Cromoglycan Sodium, which is safe and indicated even for children. Another equally effective remedy used topically is Nazaval. When it is applied to the mucous membrane, a kind of film is formed that prevents the penetration of the allergen.

Drops with corticosteroids (Nazaren, Benorin) have a good effect. These are quite strong medications, so they are recommended to be used only if other treatment methods are ineffective.

Vasoconstrictor drugs (Navtizin, Nazivin). As a rule, patients do not consider these drugs to be medicines at all and use them without a doctor’s prescription. However, such an attitude towards chemicals can lead to the development of vasomotor rhinitis, as well as cause addiction to the active ingredients of the drug.

Colds are treated with the following medications: Antiviral drugs (Interferon, etc.).

Antibacterial drugs, both general (Augmentin, etc.) and local (Bioparox, Isofra, Polydex).

Local antiseptic drugs - Sulfacyl sodium, Protargol, Chlorophyllipt.

People working in hazardous industries are constantly exposed to chemicals and their compounds, therefore, if they are unable to change their place of work, they should take some precautions and be sure to use protective equipment. The same applies when using chemicals at home.

For the treatment of vasomotor neurovegetative rhinitis, other methods are also used, which include the following:

  • Injection of medications that normalize the condition of the vessel walls.
  • Surgical intervention. Cryosurgery methods are used here, as well as ultrasound and laser techniques. The goal of all these methods is to remove the venous network located in the lower part of the nasal sinuses.
  • Physiotherapy methods. Laser, ultrasound and electrophoresis are also used to treat itching, itching and sneezing.
  • Drops containing corticoids.
  • Vasoconstrictor drugs are mandatory.
  • Antiseptic drugs (for example, Furacilin) are used to rinse the nose.

Despite the fact that the modern pharmaceutical industry offers a huge selection of drugs that help eliminate a runny nose and itchy nose, you still shouldn’t engage in self-diagnosis and try to get rid of unpleasant symptoms on your own. It will be much easier and more effective to seek help from a specialist who will conduct an appropriate examination and prescribe the correct treatment.

What to do if your nose is itching?

Otolaryngologists or therapists can often hear patients complaining that they have an itching in their nose. Such a symptom is unlikely to be explained from a physiological point of view, and therefore requires elimination. But before you engage in treatment, you need to establish the origin of the unpleasant sensations.

Causes and mechanisms

A feeling of itching or itching in the nose indicates irritation of the mucous membrane. The causes of such a reaction are foreign agents that enter the epithelium, in particular, microbes and allergens, dust, chemicals or strong odors. Therefore, the source of unpleasant symptoms may be hidden behind the following conditions and factors:

  • Acute rhinitis.
  • Vasomotor runny nose.
  • Dusty and dry air.
  • Use of vasoconstrictor drops.

The phenomenon of foreign bodies in the nasal passages cannot be ruled out, but this is mainly typical for children. In adults, one can also assume the consequences of injuries and operations when the mucous membrane has not yet completely healed, or a curvature of the nasal septum in the form of a spike, which constantly irritates the nasal wall. At the initial stage, it is important to identify all (subjective and objective) symptoms of the pathological condition in order to establish a preliminary diagnosis.

Vasomotor rhinitis

A runny nose that develops due to vascular dysfunction is called vasomotor. It comes in two types: allergic and neurovegetative. The first is provoked by substances to which the body has developed hypersensitivity, and the second is observed against the background of hormonal disorders (including during pregnancy), with prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drops. But in both cases the symptoms are similar:

  • Paroxysmal sneezing.
  • Copious serous discharge.
  • Itchy nose.
  • Tearing.

An allergic runny nose is often accompanied by conjunctivitis and redness of the eyes, which also itch. Rhinitis can be combined with atopic dermatitis or bronchial asthma.

Atrophic rhinitis

A chronic inflammatory process in the nose with trophic disorders can also give a similar picture. The mucous membrane becomes thinner, the discharge becomes scanty, but very viscous. They dry out to form crusts, which further irritate the epithelium. As a result, patients feel as if something is itching in their nose. At the same time, the sense of smell decreases, and nasal congestion persists for a long time. Nosebleeds are likely due to forced removal of the crusts.

Additional diagnostics

The exact origin of the itching can be determined based on the results of additional diagnostics. In acute or atrophic rhinitis, everything can be understood even with rhinoscopy. In the latter case, the mucous membrane looks thinned, pale, with pockets of thick mucus and crusts, and small vessels are clearly visible through it. But in case of vasomotor rhinitis, to find out the reasons, you will need to carry out allergy tests, donate blood for immunoglobulins E. And only after this can you begin treatment.

Without knowing the origin of the pathology and the exact diagnosis, there can be no talk of any treatment.

Treatment

Therapeutic tactics consist in primarily eliminating the causative factors that provoke changes in the mucous membrane. If irritation in the nose appears due to dry or dusty air, then you will have to think about moisturizing and cleaning it. In production, it is necessary to use personal respiratory protection equipment (masks, respirators). Other conditions require more specific therapy.

Traditional

Folk

In no case should folk remedies be opposed to traditional treatment. They are not an alternative, but can only be used as an addition to the main therapy. Common methods to reduce itching and tickling in the nose include the following:

  • Warming with salt in a bag or boiled egg.
  • Rinse with saline solution, herbal decoctions (calendula, sage, chamomile).
  • Instillation of aloe juice.

How to remove itching in the nose using traditional methods

The appearance of itching in the nose indicates irritation of the nasal mucosa. Itching sensations can bother you periodically or constantly, it all depends on the cause. What to do if your nose is itching, and is it possible to use folk recipes to alleviate the condition?

At first, the itching may be mild in intensity, but the person does not pay attention to it and occasionally rubs his nose. As the disease progresses, against the background of continued exposure to the provoking factor, sneezing begins, the frequency of which gradually increases.

Itching may be a physiological reaction. A person uses sneezing to clear the surface of the mucous membrane from irritating particles.

If discomfort persists for several days, it is recommended to consult a doctor. Only a specialist will be able to accurately determine the cause of mucosal irritation and prescribe effective therapy.

What causes an itchy nose?

To quickly get rid of an unpleasant symptom, you need to know what was the root cause of the disease. Let's look at the most common reasons.

Allergic reaction

In most cases, allergies manifest as itching sensations in the nasal cavities. Sneezing occurs after allergens settle on the nasal mucosa. On the one hand, they mechanically irritate the receptors, on the other, they provoke the development of an allergic reaction.

It manifests itself symptomatically:

  • itching of eyes, nose, skin;
  • lacrimation;
  • sneezing;
  • tissue swelling;
  • nasal congestion;
  • rhinorrhea (watery discharge);
  • cough.

Depending on the strength of the allergen, as well as the person’s allergic predisposition, symptoms may vary in intensity. Swelling may be limited to the tongue, eyelids, lips or spread to the neck, impairing breathing to the point of suffocation.

In addition, rashes, bronchospasm or dyspeptic disorders may occur. Volatile allergens include:

  1. dust;
  2. animal hair;
  3. nasal sprays;
  4. aroma of perfumes, cosmetics;
  5. plant pollen.

Infectious factors

Itching in the nose can occur against the background of infectious rhinitis, in particular in the first stage. When microbes get into the mucous membrane of the nasal cavities, it becomes irritated, a slight swelling occurs and the secretion of mucus increases.

To clear the cavity of microbes, hypersecretion begins. Mucus in combination with the cilia of the epithelium washes pathogenic microorganisms out. Eyelashes are protective mechanisms and are constantly in motion, ensuring regular cleansing.

Every day a person encounters a huge number of microbes, but infection does not always occur.

Weakening of protective functions is observed with immunosuppression, prolonged inhalation of cold air, chronic infectious diseases of the nasopharynx, or abnormalities in the structure of the nose.

All these factors predispose the body to infection through the mucous membrane of the nasal cavities.

The cause of infectious rhinitis can be viruses (rhinovirus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial infection), bacteria (staphylococci, streptococci, Haemophilus influenzae, meningococci). They enter the body during primary infection or are activated in chronic lesions of the paranasal cavities.

Vasoconstrictor drugs can also reduce mucosal protection if they are used in unlimited quantities.

Medicines

Many of us use nasal drops with a vasoconstrictor effect when rhinorrhea occurs. Their therapeutic assistance lies in the ability to change vascular tone at the site of drug administration. As a result, the blood vessels narrow, tissue swelling and rhinorrhea decrease.

It should be remembered that the vasoconstrictor effect is short-term and depends on the composition of the medication. The duration of vasospasm can be 4 or 12 hours. Such drugs include Ximelin, Tizin, Evkazolin, Otrivin, Lazorin, Snoop and many others.

If the drug is used over a long course (exceeding 5 days), the likelihood of addiction increases. With each subsequent use, the therapeutic effect will be significantly lower, which requires increasing the dosage or changing the medication.

The consequence of this is persistent vasospasm, drying out of the mucous membrane and a decrease in local protection. Under such conditions, any provoking factor can lead to itching, sneezing and rhinorrhea.

Other factors

To a lesser extent, the frequency of sneezing is affected by:

  • dustiness of the air when a person spends a long time in a room with a high concentration of dust, smoke, and gas. At first, the nose itches, there is discomfort in the nasal cavities, and sneezing. After this, physiological protective reactions are suppressed, cleansing becomes difficult, the mucous membrane becomes covered with dust particles and dries out;
  • pungent odors of chemicals, including household chemicals. When inhaled, aerosol particles settle on the mucous membrane, causing sneezing and itching;
  • dry hot air. Drying of the nasal cavities leads to itching sensations;
  • mechanical injury to the mucous membrane.

Traditional approach to treatment

You can get rid of itching only after eliminating the provoking factor. In treatment, the doctor may use:

  1. antimicrobial nasal agents (Polidex, Protargol);
  2. saline solutions for rinsing the nasal passages (Humer);
  3. protective equipment (Nazaval);
  4. antiallergic drugs (Cromoglycan sodium);
  5. vasoconstrictor medications (Nazivin);
  6. antiviral drugs (Nazoferon).

If the disease is of allergic origin and drug therapy is ineffective, hyposensitization of the body can be carried out.

People's help

After the examination, the doctor may recommend folk remedies. They are prescribed to enhance the therapeutic effect of basic drugs. Depending on the cause of itching, the following can be used:

Warming up

Thermal procedures can be carried out using a boiled egg and salt in a bag. If the heat source causes a burning sensation when applied to the wings of the nose, it is necessary to wrap it in an additional layer of fabric.

Washing

To wash off allergens, germs or dust from the surface of the mucous membrane, you can regularly rinse the nasal passages. For this it is recommended:

  1. saline solution The recipe includes 3 g of salt and warm water (200 ml). After the salt has completely dissolved in the water, you can begin washing;
  2. herbal decoctions (sage, calendula, St. John's wort). To prepare, just brew 15 g of herb with 300 ml of boiling water. After 20 minutes you can begin the procedure.

Instillation of nasal passages

In case of infectious origin of itching, the following can be used:

  • aloe juice To prepare a healing remedy, you need to cut the plant, peel it and leave it in the refrigerator for 12 hours in a dark material (this will help enhance the production of beneficial substances). Aloe needs to be crushed, squeezed out the juice, diluted with water to obtain a 50% concentration and drop two drops into each passage;
  • mix crushed oak bark, St. John's wort, willow bark, linden and mint flowers in a ratio of 2:1:1:2:2. Pour 15 g of the collection into a liter of boiling water, wrap for 4 hours, then filter, add 5 drops of fir oil.

If itchy sensations appear during the flowering period of plants, hay fever should be suspected. In windy weather, pollen spreads at high speed, penetrating open windows and causing a worsening of the allergy sufferer's condition.

It is advisable to walk outside after rain, when the amount of allergens in the air is minimal.

Itching in the nose is not a severe symptom, but it can be a harbinger of allergies or infectious rhinitis. Each of these diseases has its own complications, which sometimes lead to death. Considering this fact, do not delay your visit to the doctor and monitor your health.
