What is this “saline solution”? It is a liquid whose physical and chemical properties are close to those of human blood serum. These “characteristics” mean many simple, complex and generally incomprehensible parameters, such as, for example, osmotic pressure. The main thing, however, is different. After all, the true, so to speak, physiological essence of a saline solution is that under no circumstances does it irritate or damage the tissues and cells of the human body, is not an allergen, and in general is not harmful in any way.

There are quite a lot of different saline solutions, but the most accessible, most common, and most used version of saline solution is a 0.9% aqueous solution of sodium chloride. Its official medical name is isotonic sodium chloride solution. Under this name, it is, in fact, sold in pharmacies in vials and ampoules, since it is often used for intravenous administration and as a solvent for other drugs.

Sodium chloride is a well-known substance that is available in sufficient quantities in every home under the name “table salt”. Since the sodium chloride solution injected into the nasal passages does not have to be sterile at all, it is not at all necessary to buy a ready-made solution in ampoules or bottles - it can be prepared at home, because the “complex” constituent ingredients (salt and water) are certainly not in short supply and expensive. However, it is not expensive in pharmacies either. Having a sterile bottle of isotonic solution in your home medicine cabinet definitely won’t hurt. There is no need to open the bottle; if necessary, you can pierce the rubber cap with a thin needle, draw the solution into a 10-20 ml syringe, and then remove the needle from the bottle.

The need for saline solution may arise unexpectedly, and your ideas about what you should pay money for may conflict with the need to purchase salt water. These will be the prerequisites for preparing saline solution at home.

A 0.9% sodium chloride solution is 0.9 g of salt dissolved in 100 ml of water.

One teaspoon of salt can contain from 6 to 10 g.

So, purchased or prepared saline solution should be dripped into the nose. Children under one year old - 1-3 drops, over one year old - 3-5 drops in each nostril. Since it is almost impossible to overdose on saline, it is possible and necessary to do this often. The frequency is determined by the severity of difficulty breathing and the effect of the procedure. At least during those hours when the child is not sleeping, you can repeat the procedure every 10-15 minutes.

Systematic administration of saline solution leads to the fact that, firstly, the mucus is moistened, and secondly, it gradually moves from the back of the nose towards the pharynx, after which it is swallowed by the child. It is quite obvious that the use of saline solution for a runny nose is justified not only for therapeutic purposes, but also for prophylactic purposes - we are not talking about the prevention of acute respiratory infections, but about the prevention of obstruction of the nasal passages. The mechanism of the preventive effect is quite obvious - mucus, on the one hand, does not have time to accumulate, on the other, does not have time to dry out.

The mentioned processes of moistening and drying of mucus logically led us to the main factor determining the effectiveness of symptomatic treatment of the runny nose. Slime rheology! Liquid mucus - easily removed. Thick mucus is difficult to remove.
