The first symptom of a developing cold is a runny nose. How to eliminate this unpleasant symptom?
Causes and symptoms of a runny nose in pregnant women
A runny nose is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa
Rhinitis or runny nose in pregnant women is a common occurrence not only during colds. A runny nose can also appear for other reasons.
There are 3 types of rhinitis:
- Infectious. A runny nose of an infectious nature appears with a cold or respiratory diseases. This symptom occurs more often during pregnancy due to weakened immunity, as the body is more vulnerable to various infections and bacteria.
- Allergic. Rhinitis can occur due to an allergic reaction. An allergic rhinitis occurs when irritating substances enter the respiratory tract. The following irritating agents can be: wool, pollen, dust, medicines, household chemicals, etc.
- Hormone. During pregnancy, the body undergoes major hormonal changes. Under the influence of hormonal changes, a runny nose develops. Congestion is caused by increased levels of estrogen hormones. Hormonal rhinitis in pregnant women usually occurs in the second trimester and continues until childbirth. In this case, nasal congestion without mucous discharge, dryness and itching in the nasal cavity are observed. Hormonal rhinitis does not require treatment and will go away on its own.
The following symptoms are typical for viral and allergic rhinitis:
As the infection spreads, severe swelling appears, the temperature rises, and drops do not help relieve nasal congestion. These are dangerous symptoms that require immediate treatment.
Medicines for the common cold
Safe remedies for the common cold for pregnant women can only be prescribed by a doctor after examination.
During pregnancy, many drugs are contraindicated for use due to their negative effect on the fetus. Vasoconstrictor drugs are usually used to ease breathing, but their use in a pregnant woman is strictly contraindicated.
Galazolin, Sanorin, Nazivin, Naphthyzin, etc. have a vasoconstrictive effect. As a result, not only the vessels in the nasal cavity, but also the placental capillaries narrow.
Pinosol is a safe and effective remedy for the common cold. These are drops based on natural ingredients. Pinosol has a mild vasoconstrictor effect.
If you cannot do without vasoconstrictors, but they cannot be used more than once a day, it is better to buy children's drops with a minimum dosage.
For allergic rhinitis, the use of drugs based on phenylephrine is allowed. One such remedy is Vibrocil. If a runny nose appears due to a cold, then immunostimulants are used to increase immune strength.
Carrying out inhalations
Inhalations are prohibited at high temperatures and cardiac pathologies.
A runny nose of an infectious or viral nature can be treated with inhalation therapy. Inhalations can be carried out with a nebulizer or use the “grandmother’s” method - breathing over steam.
For inhalations, you can use eucalyptus, fir oil, as well as herbal decoctions based on chamomile, calendula, sage, etc. They have an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect.
Fill the container with hot water, add 2-3 drops of essential oil and breathe. You can add slightly alkaline mineral water or a weak soda solution to the tank. For the procedure, you can use herbal remedies, for example, calendula tincture. It is diluted with saline solution in a ratio of 1:40. Among pharmaceutical preparations, Sinupret drops are used to relieve inflammation and restore the functioning of local immunity. They are diluted in equal proportions with saline.
Inhalations affect only the affected respiratory tract and do not put a strain on healthy organs.
The duration of the procedure should not exceed 5 minutes. It is recommended to carry out 3-4 inhalations per day. The procedure is carried out an hour after eating. It is not advisable to go outside after inhalation.
Nasal rinsing procedure
It is recommended to perform this procedure at the first symptoms of a runny nose.
An effective and useful procedure for a runny nose during pregnancy is nasal rinsing.
How to rinse a pregnant woman’s nose with a runny nose:
- A weak saline solution can be used to rinse the nasal cavity. It not only cleanses the nasal mucosa of harmful microbes, but also makes breathing easier. To prepare the solution, add a teaspoon of salt and 2-3 drops of iodine to a glass of warm boiled water. Instead of table salt, you can use sea salt. The composition is prepared in a similar way.
- For purulent discharge, you can use furatsilin for rinsing: dissolve the tablet in a glass of water. This is an effective antimicrobial agent.
- At the pharmacy you can buy drugs based on sea water: Aqualor, Salin, Quix, Rinolux, etc. They are absolutely harmless.
For rinsing, you can use any container with a spout or a rubber bulb. Washing should be done several times a day for 3-4 days.
Traditional methods of treatment
Aloe juice is an effective and safe folk remedy for the common cold for pregnant women.
In the treatment of a runny nose, you can do without medications. For rhinitis, you can use traditional methods of treatment.
Popular and effective recipes for a runny nose:
- Beetroot juice. Peel and chop small beets. Pour boiled water and leave to steep for 2 hours. Place 4 drops into each nasal passage no more than 5 times a day.
- Carrot juice. Carrots have miraculous properties and can be used to treat rhinitis. Apply freshly squeezed juice to your nose several times a day.
- Kalanchoe juice. The juice is first diluted in boiled water. 3 drops should be instilled into each nasal passage 3 times a day for a week.
- Aloe juice. Cut off a small leaf, rinse and squeeze out the juice. 2-3 drops in each passage about 3 times a day are enough.
- Decoctions of medicinal herbs can also be used as drops for any runny nose. They help reduce mucus production and make breathing easier.
- Onions have good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is useful to inhale onion vapors and chew them in your mouth. It is recommended to perform 2 times a day.
You can drink warm teas based on medicinal herbs: chamomile, thyme, currants, rose hips, etc. Decoctions not only strengthen the immune system, but also help replenish fluid in the body. For taste, you can add lemon or half a spoon of honey.
Is a runny nose in pregnant women dangerous for the fetus?
Incorrect treatment or severe runny nose can cause complications not only in the pregnant woman, but also in the fetus
A short-term runny nose does not pose a threat to a child if it is not accompanied by high fever and general intoxication of the body. If the snot turns green or yellow, this indicates a bacterial infection, which can be dangerous in the early stages of pregnancy.
A prolonged runny nose leads to breathing problems and can provoke hypoxia - oxygen starvation in the fetus. As a result, there is a delay in the development of the embryo. Rhinitis poses a great danger precisely in the first trimester, when the formation and formation of the baby’s vital organs occurs.
When using vasoconstrictor drugs, there is a high probability of developing placental vascular insufficiency and, as a result, impaired development of the nervous system.
The danger of an allergic rhinitis is that allergens can reach the fetus and cause a reaction in its own immune system. In the later stages, the body prepares for childbirth, so viral or bacterial rhinitis can cause aging of the placenta, the virus entering the amniotic fluid and the development of disease in the fetus or premature birth.
A prolonged runny nose can settle into the respiratory tract, lead to bronchitis or become chronic. Then you will need serious and long-term treatment. To avoid unpleasant consequences, treatment of a runny nose should begin at the first symptoms. It is important to consult a doctor in time and follow all his recommendations. Self-treatment is unacceptable.
To avoid a runny nose, it is recommended to adhere to preventive measures:
- Avoid hypothermia.
- Eat more vegetables and fruits.
- You should drink more fluid. It is useful to take herbal infusions, teas, milk with honey, etc.
- Limit contact with sick people.
- If possible, eliminate salt from your diet. It provokes swelling.
- Eat garlic and onions. They have bactericidal properties. They can also be cut and placed throughout the room.
- It is important to regularly carry out wet cleaning and ventilate the room.
- In good weather, it is recommended to spend a sufficient amount of time outside.
- In the autumn-winter period, it is recommended to use vitamin-mineral complexes. Medicines should only be prescribed by a doctor.
By following these recommendations, you will be able to prevent the occurrence of colds and the symptoms that accompany them.

I’m just sick right now, and at 14 weeks. I can say for myself that rinsing the nose helps a lot; my doctor recommended calcined sea salt from a series called Morenasal. I didn’t even know that Aquamaris, for example, contains ordinary sea salt, which was passed through a filter, so it can only be stored for 45 days, while Morenasal Ash can be used for a whole year.

Treatment of a runny nose during pregnancy with pharmaceutical and folk remedies
A runny nose during pregnancy is a trivial phenomenon at first glance: just think, a runny nose! However, this is not very pleasant, and besides, cases when a runny nose becomes chronic are not so rare - if only because almost all drops for a runny nose are contraindicated for pregnant women, since they have a vasoconstrictor effect.
So treating a runny nose during pregnancy may not be as simple a task as it might seem at first glance.
Causes of runny nose during pregnancy
A runny nose during pregnancy is a fairly common occurrence. There is a completely logical explanation for this: firstly, a pregnant woman’s immunity decreases and she becomes more susceptible to various diseases. Secondly, the cause of this phenomenon is the hormones progesterone and estrogen, which are intensively produced during pregnancy. Their “side effect” is swelling of the mucous membrane and a decrease in its thickness.
Another reason is drying out of the mucous membrane due to an increase in the amount of blood circulating in the body. The mucous membrane can dry out for other reasons: due to low levels of humidity in the air you breathe, or due to various allergic reactions.
It can also be an unpleasant consequence of the growth of nasopharyngeal polyps or adenoids, or a deviated nasal septum and sinusitis. In this case, consultation with an otolaryngologist is necessary.
By the way, it would be good to visit him before pregnancy, especially if you already had problems with the nasopharynx, in particular, if as a child you constantly suffered from sore throats and colds.
Runny nose in early pregnancy
If the cause of a runny nose lies in allergies or colds, then it is impossible to clearly answer the question of when it will appear. But when it comes to the so-called hormonal runny nose, everything is simpler here - it often appears in the second trimester. But a runny nose in the early stages of pregnancy is also not uncommon: it happens that a woman notices nasal congestion even before she finds out about her pregnancy.
It is also called “pregnancy runny nose.” In fact, this is vasomotor rhinitis. Most likely, you will be able to get rid of it only after childbirth, when the hormonal levels return to normal. No special treatment for a runny nose is required, but you still need to alleviate your condition, otherwise you simply will not be able to breathe normally, and your blood will not be fully saturated with oxygen. This is bad for both you and the baby, and besides, it’s simply unpleasant.
However, a doctor must prescribe treatment for a runny nose during pregnancy (and, above all, make a diagnosis). Even if you notice that your runny nose begins in the spring, when everything is in bloom, and you conclude that it is allergic rhinitis, do not diagnose yourself, go to the doctor, especially since if it is really an allergy, you will need a course of treatment.
But you need to go to the doctor even faster if, in addition to a runny nose, you also have a headache, fever, cough, sore throat - it’s almost certainly a virus, and you can’t let the disease take its course, because any infection poses a danger to the baby , especially in early pregnancy.
Treatment of runny nose during pregnancy
Rinsing the nose has a good effect - again, due to moisturizing the mucous membrane. To do this, it is convenient to use ready-made preparations based on salt and sea water, but they are usually expensive. An economical option is saline solution, a decoction of chamomile or sage.
Thermal procedures also help. Of course, pregnant women should not apply mustard plasters and steam their feet, but local warmth will not hurt at all: wear warm socks (best at night), warm your nasal sinuses with a boiled egg or a bag of sand or salt. Warming up with a blue lamp also helps.
Inhalations are also good, especially onion and garlic: these plants contain essential oils that have the properties of phytoncides, that is, they kill microbes. These inhalations are done like this: chop the onion and garlic into a teapot, fill it with hot water, wait a little so as not to get burned by the steam, and then breathe over the spout of the teapot alternately with both nostrils.
Herbal infusions and essential oils of menthol and tea tree are also good for inhalation. Such inhalations can be done up to 4 times a day for 10 minutes - try it, it is a very effective and, most importantly, a safe way to treat a runny nose during pregnancy!
By the way, these same essential oils will be useful when massaging the nose: try massaging the points at the wings of the nostrils, the bridge of the nose, and temples with the tips of your index fingers. Instead of oils, you can rub in Doctor Mom ointment.
Ventilate the room more often, especially before going to bed. Try sleeping on a high pillow - this way the nasal mucosa will swell less.
Medicines for runny nose during pregnancy
The stumbling block is nose drops. Pregnant women are unanimously forbidden to use them, and yet many women use this method to escape nasal congestion... Are drops for a runny nose really dangerous during pregnancy?
The fact is that they really constrict the blood vessels, and therefore the capillaries of the placenta, that is, the fetus receives less oxygen, and this should not be allowed, since the consequences of hypoxia can be very serious. In addition, drops for a runny nose can cause increased blood pressure and even cramps. Well, there is one more disadvantage: their effect, as a rule, ends quite quickly, and you have to bury them too often.
If you cannot do without medications for a runny nose during pregnancy, give preference to various homeopathic drops, sprays and oil-based ointments. Nothing helps and you have to use vasoconstrictor drops? Remember the simple rules for their use: only in the acute phase of a runny nose, only 1-2 times a day (try dripping before bed to sleep better), only in a children's dosage and no more than 3 days. Still, before you take the drops, try other methods and consult your doctor.
Runny nose during pregnancy: treatment with folk remedies
You can try treatment with various folk remedies. How do you like this recipe: instead of pharmaceutical drops, use... apple or carrot juice? Dosage – 6-8 drops 3-4 times a day.
Another effective method for treating a runny nose during pregnancy is drinking plenty of hot drinks. It serves both to replenish fluid in the body and as a general tonic. It is better to drink teas, decoctions of various herbs, fruit drinks, milk with honey, as well as teas containing vitamin C: weak tea with lemon, currant compote, rosehip decoction.
Prepare the latter as follows: boil the dry inflorescences for 3-5 minutes, adding a little sugar to the water - this will preserve vitamin C, which cannot withstand prolonged heat treatment.
For more serious cases - severe runny nose and sinusitis - try drinking a hot infusion of strawberries or plantain. The recipe is simple: 2 tbsp. Pour any of these herbs into 1 cup of boiling water. After half an hour, strain, drink 2-3 times a day, half a glass. By the way, coltsfoot willow bark is suitable for these purposes.
However, many experts argue that herbs and other folk remedies are not absolutely safe; they can cause miscarriage or various pathologies. Therefore, be sure to consult with your doctor.
Regardless of what caused the runny nose during pregnancy, treatment should not be delayed - why complicate your life? However, it is better not to resort to the help of store-bought drops, but to be treated in natural, that is, safer ways!
I also did not avoid rhinitis during pregnancy. The doctor allowed me to rinse my nose with a seawater spray. I bought AquaMaster. I managed to appreciate that it is economical; the solution can be refilled into the bottle. I just didn’t use it all the time, but for a couple of weeks, then a break. Even with the most humane means, one must be careful in the situation.
Valentina, try it, it’s definitely allowed during pregnancy. I studied it carefully and brought it to the doctor for approval. It is unlikely that anything else from spray-drops in the situation is possible, especially for a long time. The spray is good.
Oksana, So I ran into the same problem. I’m 20 weeks, my nose is constantly stuffy, I can’t breathe at all. I’m not going to the doctor yet, I’m afraid to try anything myself. AquaMaster will help me, what do you think?
I think you can use Sopelka during pregnancy
You need to read about it, there are natural oils in this drug
I also drank a lot of warm tea during pregnancy. I also washed my nose with sea water, although at first, out of ignorance, I thought it was convenient and took the aerosol, even though the bottle was large, but it only lasted for 3 days. And when I read that it could clear up otitis media, I refused and switched to a spray with a dispenser. Very convenient, nothing leaks, and lasts a long time
Probably every second girl suffered from a runny nose during pregnancy. I’m no exception) Like everyone else, I washed my nose, did inhalations, drank teas with honey and lemon... but my nose still couldn’t breathe. Then a friend advised me to buy Genferon light in the form of a spray. It has a vasoconstrictor effect, so it helps with a runny nose. I asked my doctor and she approved. Because You can use it during pregnancy!
Thank you very much for the article, everything is written very clearly. I myself encountered such a problem during pregnancy, I suffered from a runny nose from time to time. On the recommendation of my doctor, I washed my nose with sea water, moisturized the nasal mucosa, it was easier to breathe, I bought Aqualor for this. I tried not to use drops; it was enough to rinse my nose.

Treatment of runny nose in pregnant women
Pregnant health
There are a lot of remedies for such a seasonal scourge as a runny nose in pregnant women. But not all of them are suitable for expectant mothers.
A runny nose (rhinitis) is one of the most common diseases, which can cause a lot of discomfort for the expectant mother. This is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, sometimes it is accompanied by a feeling of nasal congestion (due to severe swelling of the mucous membrane), pain, and copious discharge from the nostrils.
Causes of a runny nose
Viral infection is the most common cause of runny nose in pregnant women. Viral rhinitis occurs especially often in the autumn-winter period, when acute respiratory diseases peak. The disease is manifested by swelling of the nasal mucosa, liquid mucous transparent discharge. Often viral rhinitis is one of the symptoms of acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI), accompanied by fever, headaches, and weakness.
A bacterial infection, as a rule, develops against the background of a long-term, sluggish viral infection, due to which local immunity in the nasal cavity is reduced, the balance of natural microflora is disrupted, and active reproduction of opportunistic microorganisms such as streptococci and staphylococci begins. In this case, nasal discharge becomes thicker and takes on a green or greenish-yellow hue.
A runny nose in pregnant women of allergic origin worries many expectant mothers in the spring and summer. When plants begin to bloom, there are many microscopic pollen particles in the air, which, settling on the nasal mucosa, cause irritation and trigger allergic processes. As a result of this, swelling of the nasal mucosa increases, transparent, liquid mucous discharge appears; the disease may also be accompanied by swelling of the mucous membrane of the eyes and lacrimation.
Manifestations of rhinitis bring a lot of discomfort to a pregnant woman.
Swelling of the mucous membrane prevents normal free nasal breathing, which becomes a frequent cause of sleep disturbances, irritability and fatigue, and constant nasal discharge causes a lot of inconvenience to the expectant mother.
Fortunately, today pharmacies have a sufficient range of remedies for the common cold that are also suitable for pregnant women.
How to treat a runny nose in pregnant women
Nasal cleansers. Effective cleansing of the nasal cavity from secretions promotes faster recovery and subsidence of swelling, and prevents the addition of a bacterial infection.
Any saline solution is ideal for this purpose. For example, ordinary saline solution, i.e. 0.9?% solution of ordinary salt. Effectively washing away secretions, it has a gentle and beneficial effect on the nasal mucosa, and to some extent relieves swelling of the mucous membrane.
AQUAMARIS spray or drops are purified sea water from the Adriatic Sea. It has no contraindications for use, except for individual intolerance to the components of the drug. This is an excellent product that can be used to cleanse the nose without restrictions on the frequency and duration of procedures.
AQUALOR is also perfect for washing. This is a spray containing natural sea water enriched with mineral salts. It is safe for pregnant women, children and even newborns.
The DOLPHIN nasal rinsing complex is a set consisting of a bottle with a nozzle for rinsing the nose and a set of soluble powders containing not only salt, but also minerals and herbal extracts. Dissolve the powder from one sachet in warm water in a bottle, close tightly with a rinse attachment, and shake lightly to completely dissolve the powder.
Place the nozzle on one nostril, tilt your head slightly to the side opposite the nostril being washed, and hold your breath. Lightly press the walls of the bottle - the solution will enter the nasal cavity, effectively washing all areas of the mucous membrane. Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
Thanks to the mild solution and the method of washing, the nasal mucosa is effectively cleansed, viral and bacterial particles and allergens are washed out of the nasal cavity, and swelling subsides.
Contraindications to the use of DOLPHIN are individual intolerance to the solution, as well as acute and chronic otitis media. You can use DOLPHIN without restrictions on the frequency and duration of use.
Means for softening the nasal mucosa and increasing local immunity. PINOSOL drops contain rapeseed oil, pine oil, eucalyptus and peppermint. Thanks to this combination, PINOSOL has a softening effect on the nasal mucosa, helps relieve swelling, and increases local immunity. Contraindications to the use of PINOSOL are individual intolerance to the components of the drug, runny nose in pregnant women of allergic origin.
GRIPFERON drops contain a substance that stimulates local immunity and increases the body's resistance to infection. Gripferon can be used at any stage of pregnancy; it is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance and severe allergic reactions.
Remedies for nasal congestion. In order to relieve the unpleasant symptom of nasal congestion, you can use vasoconstrictors. By acting on the mucous membrane, these drugs help reduce swelling and restore free nasal breathing. However, before using medications from this group, you should clear the nasal cavity of secretions so that the vasoconstrictor has a targeted effect on the cleansed mucous membrane.
Pregnant women are allowed to use the vasoconstrictor SANORIN at any time. This medicine is available in the form of drops or spray. Contraindications for use are rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, glaucoma, and intolerance to the components of the drug. It is important to remember that long-term use (more than 3-4 days) of a vasoconstrictor can lead to atrophy (depletion) of the nasal mucosa and, as a result, temporary loss of smell and repeated swelling of the mucous membrane.
Remedies for allergic rhinitis in pregnant women. The mechanisms of development of allergic and infectious rhinitis are different. When an allergen is exposed to the nasal mucosa, allergic reactions begin to occur in it, due to which swelling develops in the nose and abundant mucous-liquid transparent discharge appears. Medicines with an antiallergic effect will help eliminate these symptoms. Before using antiallergic nasal medications, you should consult your doctor.
FLIXONASE is a spray whose main active ingredient is glucocorticosteroid hormone, which is a highly effective antiallergic agent. FLIXONASE has only a local effect on the nasal mucosa and does not affect the body as a whole. Contraindicated in case of individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
VIBROCIL - nasal drops that combine antiallergic and vasoconstrictor effects. VIBROCIL is also available in the form of a gel, in which case the drug is placed as deep as possible into the nasal cavity. Carrying out this procedure before bed will ensure that your nose does not get stuffy all night. VIBROCIL is contraindicated in case of glaucoma, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, intolerance to the components of the drug. The medicine can be used at any stage of pregnancy, with caution and under the supervision of a doctor.

Thanks useful information. A runny nose in a pregnant woman, of course, causes not only an uncomfortable state for the mother, but also for the baby, because he may not have enough oxygen. When the position hurt, the therapist prescribed rinsing my nose with sea water. Then I washed her nose before going to the doctor and after, during the flu season I didn’t get sick at all.
April 3:19
Nasal congestion is a feeling of lack of air in which it is impossible to take a full breath through one/both nostrils. Insufficient nasal breathing is accompanied by nasal sounds, pain and itching in the sinuses, stuffy ears, decreased sense of smell, sneezing, unpleasant odor and nasal discharge.
January 18:40
I rinse with salt solution and dolphin, and drip Sanorin. I’ve been 7 months pregnant for a week now, and before that my nose simply couldn’t breathe at night. Today my nose is so runny that even standing on my feet it flows and drips; my whole nose is stuffy and everything around it is inflamed. There is a humidifier at home, and all because my 3-year-old daughter fell ill with SARS. how to get out of this vicious circle? is she the one?
Thanks to the author for the good advice. I completely agree that during pregnancy you need to be careful when choosing medications, because you are responsible not only for yourself, but also for the baby. When I was pregnant, I washed my nose with Aqualor, it helped me a lot. The main thing is to use natural products and chemicals as rarely as possible and only when absolutely necessary.

How to treat a runny nose during pregnancy
Women, even healthy and seasoned women, often catch colds during pregnancy. I got caught in the rain, sat in a draft, put on a coat that was too thin - and my nose was already stuffy, my head was pounding, and my throat was red and sore. Ordinary people can go to the pharmacy and buy any vasoconstrictor drops, but the expectant mother has to carefully choose a treatment method and drugs that will not harm the baby.
Types of runny nose
First, the pregnant woman determines the cause of nasal discharge. Congestion and swelling of the mucous membrane can be provoked by:
- infections;
- hormonal changes;
- viruses;
- allergens;
- common cold;
- new chemicals or cosmetics.
Infectious and allergic rhinitis develops at any stage of pregnancy. An organism weakened by hormonal changes cannot resist viruses and bacteria. Sensitivity increases, so even cosmetics or household chemicals can trigger an allergic runny nose.
Vasomotor rhinitis appears in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, when the concentration of estrogen and progesterone in the blood increases. Hormones cause the nasal mucosa to swell and secrete clear secretions. The expectant mother's well-being will improve after childbirth when progesterone levels decrease.
Vasomotor runny nose is treated with saline solutions and herbal decoctions, which are used to wash the nasal passages. If a pregnant woman has difficulty breathing, the doctor prescribes vasoconstrictor drops, but the drugs are used with caution. If abused, they cause fetal hypoxia.
Allergic rhinitis is treated with antihistamines, drinking plenty of fluids and saline solutions. If a woman does not know which product caused the swelling of the mucous membrane, she undergoes an examination. Having discovered the reason, she simply does not use this component and tries not to come into contact with it.
Infectious rhinitis is the most dangerous. A common runny nose without proper treatment quickly turns into sinusitis and causes complications. Viruses affect the child, causing the development of defects.
A pregnant woman should contact a gynecologist or therapist at the first symptoms of rhinitis. The specialist will determine the cause of the discharge and congestion and recommend remedies that are safe for the developing baby.
Rest and vitamins
Expectant mothers who have an infectious runny nose are advised to forget about household chores and spend 2-3 days in bed. It doesn't matter what the temperature is. Pregnant women should not tolerate rhinitis and colds on their feet. A weakened body needs a soft bed, a warm blanket and plenty of rest. It is beneficial to sleep, drink tea and eat plenty of apples and other seasonal fruits.
The body, which fights infection, is supplied daily with vitamin C. Lemons and oranges are rich in ascorbic acid, but citrus fruits are contraindicated. There is an increased risk that a child will be born with a tendency to allergies.
Exotic fruits are replaced with apples, pears and rosehip decoction. Red berries contain a lot of ascorbic acid. They cope with colds, runny nose and do not harm the child. Water infusions of rose hips are even given to infants if they are often sick.
Vitamin C is found in parsley and lettuce. Ascorbic acid strengthens the immune system and the walls of blood vessels, removes swelling of the mucous membrane and makes breathing easier. The beneficial component should not be abused, so as not to provoke premature aging and placental rejection.
Helps with colds and rhinitis tocopherol and retinol. Vitamins are responsible for the elasticity of blood vessels and help the body fight viruses and inflammation. Contained in chicken yolk, carrots, beef liver, peaches, apricots, orange sweet peppers.
Viburnum is useful for a runny nose. The berries are ground with sugar or honey and eaten twice a day. Currant and raspberry jam speeds up recovery, but you should not indulge in sweets. Use 50–100 g of tasty medicine daily until congestion and discharge disappear.
Tea and humidifier
A pregnant woman with a runny nose needs to drink 1.5–2 liters of any liquid. Still water, berry fruit drinks and jelly, herbal decoctions and green tea are useful. If rhinitis is accompanied by headache and fever, add honey and a pinch of ginger to the drink. The spice warms, removes inflammation and supports weakened immunity.
Symptoms of rhinitis will disappear in a few days if you brew medicinal herbs:
Pregnant women should not drink concentrated decoctions, so add a pinch of the selected plant to a glass of boiling water. Infuse anti-inflammatory tea in a thermos or under a lid. Strain when the drink becomes warm. Pregnant women who do not like the taste of the medicine are advised to mix the infusion with a spoon of honey or raspberry jam. Drink 150–200 ml twice a day.
Important: If after consuming a herbal decoction rashes, strange pains or other unpleasant symptoms appear, the plant is not suitable for a woman. You need to try another component or abandon this method.
A pregnant woman is recommended to drink a glass of warm milk before going to bed. The product is heated in a water bath, combined with a pinch of soda and 30 g of honey. The drink relaxes, soothes, helps with fever and sore throat.
The water balance is restored with chicken or vegetable broth. Heavy soups made from pork, mushrooms or fatty fish are contraindicated. A pregnant woman's body is weakened by a runny nose, so it is difficult for it to digest such food.
Decoctions and jelly dilute mucus. The discharge does not accumulate in the maxillary sinuses, so it becomes easier for the woman to breathe.
The nasal mucosa swells due to dry and stagnant air. The apartment must be ventilated at least 2 times a day. In autumn and spring, you can open the windows and go for a walk in the park for 1–1.5 hours. During this time, the rooms will be filled with oxygen. In winter, open the windows slightly for 15–20 minutes. Frosty air refreshes, constricts blood vessels and makes breathing easier for several minutes.
In the bedroom and room in which the pregnant woman spends a lot of time, bowls with onions or garlic are placed. The workpiece is crushed and filled with water. It releases phytoncides that disinfect the room and destroy bacteria. It is recommended to place humidifiers next to the bed and sofa. They regularly spray liquid, so the mucous membrane does not dry out and swells less.
Warmth from a runny nose
You can't float your feet. Blood circulation in the lower part of the body increases, the uterus begins to contract. In the early stages, a miscarriage may occur due to this procedure. Pregnant women at 5–8 months have an increased risk of premature birth.
Hand baths will remove congestion. Warm water is poured into a basin and a little sea salt is added. Immerse your palms in the solution for 15–20 minutes. Thanks to the procedure, blood circulation increases only in the upper part of the body, so the child is not in danger.
Steam inhalations will clear up a runny nose. A hot solution is poured into a ceramic or porcelain teapot. Suitable:
- chamomile infusion;
- saline solution with or without iodine;
- hot water with onions or garlic;
- menthol essential oil or tea tree.
The container is filled halfway with liquid. It is not necessary to cover the kettle with a lid. The nose is inserted into one nostril, the second is pressed with a finger to the septum. Take a few deep breaths. Exhale through your nose too. Repeat twice a day.
Inhalations are easier to carry out if there is a nebulizer in the house. You can breathe over boiled potatoes, covered with a wide towel or blanket. Thermal procedures last 5–15 minutes.
The maxillary sinuses are heated with fabric bags into which are poured:
The dry filler is heated in a frying pan. Boiled eggs are also suitable, wrapped in cloth napkins or small towels so as not to burn the skin. The sinuses are heated with a blue lamp in the hospital or at home. It helps with runny nose, sore throats and colds.
Folk recipes
Swelling and purulent discharge are removed by onion drops. A natural medicine is prepared from finely chopped vegetables, which are mixed with linden honey. Combine 30–40 g of ingredients and leave until the mixture begins to release juice. The liquid is poured into a glass vial. Place onion juice in your nose 3-4 times a day.
A runny nose is treated with gauze turundas soaked in special compounds. Tampons are soaked in a mixture of essential oil and vegetable oil. Corn, sunflower or olive oil will do. Pour a spoonful of the base into a glass plate or cup and heat it in a water bath. Add 2 drops of essential oil and stir with a wooden stick. Soak tampons with the product, squeeze out excess and insert into nasal passages for 15–30 minutes.
A solution for turundas is prepared from butter and milk. Place a tablespoon of each product in a ceramic container and heat. Add 5 g of soda and 30 ml of honey to the warm mixture. Stir and soak gauze pads in the product.
The nose is instilled with natural juices:
- carrot;
- apple;
- beet;
- from Kalanchoe.
Aloe should not be used for a runny nose during pregnancy. The plant provokes miscarriages and premature births. Fruit or vegetable juice is diluted with water. Instill in each nostril 4-5 times a day.
Eucalyptus and menthol oil, which is mixed with sunflower or flaxseed, helps relieve swelling of the mucous membrane. The product is applied to the bridge of the nose, maxillary sinuses, temples and wings of the nose. The liquid is rubbed in with massage movements. Instead of essential oils, use “Asterisk” or “Doctor Mom”.
Cleansing and moisturizing
The nose is regularly washed with a warm solution prepared from sea or iodized salt. Take a teaspoon of dry product for a glass of heated water. Inject into each nostril using a syringe or small syringe. After rinsing, gargle with saline solution to prevent the infection from spreading to the tonsils and bronchi.
Pharmacies sell ready-made drops:
The saline solution is replaced with decoctions of chamomile or calendula. Purulent discharge is washed away well with warm water in which a crushed furatsilin tablet is dissolved. The drug disinfects the maxillary sinuses and destroys the infection.
After washing, the mucous membrane is lubricated with Vaseline or rich baby cream so that it does not dry out. Sea buckthorn or linseed oil will also work.
Pregnant women with a runny nose need to rest a lot, drink warm tea with lemon and warm up the maxillary sinuses. Apply fruit juices to your nose and rinse with saline solutions. If the condition of the expectant mother worsens and folk remedies do not help, the doctor prescribes vasoconstrictor drops, antibacterial drugs and antibiotics.

Runny nose in pregnant women - how to treat it correctly?
Many female representatives face the phenomenon of a runny nose in pregnant women. The phenomenon is not only common, but also unpleasant, so every woman should know how to deal with it. We are not talking about rhinitis that occurs due to a cold. It often happens that in the early stages of pregnancy, the expectant mother develops nasal congestion for no apparent reason. A watery, clear fluid begins to be released from the nasal passages, which is accompanied by sneezing. It is worth noting that there are no other symptoms characteristic of a cold, and the discharge may worsen when lying down.
Possible causes of the painful condition
To understand how to treat a runny nose, the first step is to establish the cause of this phenomenon. But this should be done by a doctor, because self-medication during pregnancy is fraught with serious consequences. The most important cause of watery nasal discharge is hormonal changes in the female body. More precisely, the level of estrogen increases, which contributes to the formation of swelling of the mucous membrane in the nasal cavity.
The second reason is weakened immunity. If a pregnant woman is faced with a viral disease (ARVI), then along with nasal discharge other symptoms will predominate, namely:
- headache;
- body hyperthermia (high temperature);
- cough;
- a sore throat.
In this case, not only medications, but also folk remedies are effective. But they need to be used wisely and only after consulting a doctor.
One of the common complications after a cold is sinusitis. It is a consequence of untreated rhinitis of viral origin. Here you need to be extremely careful, because the discharge may acquire a yellowish-green tint, which indicates the development of sinusitis. Frontitis, ethmoiditis is accompanied by discharge streaked with blood. Under such circumstances, you need to treat essential oils with caution. Despite their positive qualities, they cannot always be used.
A runny nose can also be of allergic origin; it is an unpredictable reaction of the body to the influence of external factors and substances. There are also additional allergy symptoms, such as:
A distinctive feature of allergic rhinitis is that it bothers a pregnant woman only if she comes into contact with a provocateur.
Is a runny nose dangerous while pregnant?
Nasal discharge itself is not a threat to the health of the mother or the development of the child. But if there is an infectious lesion in the body of the expectant mother, then there is a danger. The fact is that the first trimester of pregnancy is the most important, because during these 12 weeks internal organs are formed, and the negative impact of infection can disrupt the physiological process. The worst thing is that abnormal deformations can occur. Under no circumstances should you self-medicate, because the use of any medications is prohibited in the 1st trimester.
A woman should not panic, but she should not ignore the painful condition either. In medical practice, there have been cases when a runny nose was the cause of a miscarriage. In any case, you should contact an ENT specialist.
Cold drops for pregnant women - what do you need to know?
Treatment of pregnant women is organized in various ways. Some of them involve the use of medications, others do not. It all depends on the stage of pregnancy, the final decision is made by the doctor. Safe methods of exposure include inhalation, but they must be done wisely. Doctors recommend making decoctions of herbs such as sage, calendula, thyme, and breathing their vapors for several minutes. If the exact cause of the painful condition is unknown, inhalation of potato vapors can be arranged. The main thing is to start treatment as soon as possible so that a runny nose does not have time to affect the development of the fetus.
It is important to know that due to difficulty breathing in a pregnant woman, the child does not receive enough oxygen, and accordingly, he experiences hypoxia. A woman can also easily catch a viral disease.
As for medications, they are presented in two categories. Depending on the cause of the nasal disease, the doctor prescribes a spray. It can have a vasoconstrictor effect, it can be used for a clearly limited time and only if its usefulness outweighs the possible harm. Drugs with similar effects include Pinosol.
The safest remedies for a runny nose are saline solutions and sea water. Saline solution, Aquamaris - all this can be purchased at the pharmacy without a prescription. The principle of their action is as follows: the medicinal liquid has an increased concentration of salt in its composition, this ensures that excess fluid leaves the intercellular spaces, accordingly, swelling decreases, and the blood vessels of the mucous membrane narrow. Proper use of saline solutions helps eliminate the feeling of congestion, sneezing, and reduce the amount of liquid discharge from the nasal passages.
A drug such as Interferon is prescribed extremely rarely to pregnant women. If possible, it is better to avoid using it altogether in the first trimesters of pregnancy. A contraindication is the use of interferon-based spray together with vasoconstrictors. This is fraught with severe drying of the mucous membranes.
Traditional medicine against runny nose
When it comes to a runny nose in pregnant women, it is better to fight it through traditional medicine, because many medications are simply prohibited during pregnancy. But! Any procedures or medications used must first be discussed with a doctor. This will avoid negative consequences. One of the safest ones is carrot or apple juice. The instillation procedure is carried out three times a day. The duration of treatment is 7 days, but if relief does not occur, be sure to consult a doctor.
You can also make drops from Kalanchoe, as practice shows, they provide a positive effect. The secret is that the plant has several properties at once, namely:
- bactericidal;
- anti-inflammatory;
- hemostatic;
- wound healing.
The juice from Kalanchoe leaves contains many useful substances, including macro/microelements. Polysaccharides, vitamin C, flavonoids, tannins, organic acids, enzymes - all this together provides a positive effect.
Aloe is also a remedy for the common cold (it is popularly known as agave). The plant is used as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory therapy, in addition, it is an active biostimulant. It contains vitamins of different groups, about twenty amino acids, and a complex of microelements that are beneficial for the body. Freshly squeezed juice is used in the treatment process because it has maximum nutritional value as well as medicinal value.
Beetroot juice is safe for pregnant women; it is also used for children as a cure for the common cold. It does not have a hazardous effect on health on the body, and most importantly, it does not cause addiction to the mucous membranes and does not damage them. The same applies to sea buckthorn oil.
Treatment of runny nose in pregnant women 2nd trimester
After the 12th week of pregnancy, it is allowed to use not only traditional medicine, but also medications. Before doing this, you should definitely consult your doctor. If the 3rd trimester is approaching, then it is allowed to use Pinosol, but only if there is no allergy to its components.
The most important thing is that the treatment is fully consistent with the diagnosis.
