In other words, doctors prescribe sodium sulfacyl in the nose as an alternative to antibiotics during the treatment of an infectious runny nose.
Release form
Drops can be purchased at the pharmacy in a bottle, dropper tube or bottle with a dropper. If you buy sulfacyl for nasal instillation in children, you must choose a form of the drug that is convenient for dosing. Otherwise you will have to purchase a pipette. A small bottle contains 5 or 10 ml of liquid substance.
Compound
Albucid is an aqueous solution of sulfacetamide. The manufacturer also indicates that the drug contains hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate. The medicine is available in two concentrations - 20% and 30%. The second option can only be used in adults.
This drug belongs to the sulfonamide group and has an antiseptic effect.
Is it possible to drip sodium sulfacyl into the nose?
The instructions indicate that the drug is effective in the treatment of conjunctivitis, purulent corneal ulcers, blenorrhea and as a prophylactic agent in case of foreign body ingestion. But doctors may also prescribe sodium sulfacyl for a runny nose caused by bacteria.
It differs from the usual one in that greenish or yellow mucus is released from the nose. Its consistency is thick. Other remedies that are commonly used for a runny nose do not help with the bacterial variety.
After sulfacyl enters the nasal mucosa, it has a drying effect and prevents the proliferation of bacteria. To make the product more effective, you should first rinse your nose with saline or sea salt-based preparations (Aqua Maris, Dolphin, Aqualor). The next stage after this is vasoconstrictor drops. And only then - sodium sulfacyl.
The product may be ineffective when the bacteria infecting the body are not susceptible to the active substance. Sometimes sodium sulfacyl in the form of nasal drops is contraindicated. This applies to cases where a serious bacterial infection is present. Only antibiotics can help here, otherwise the disease will spread to the sinuses and ENT organs.
Doctors choose this remedy because of its availability. Many modern drugs for the treatment of the common cold have an unreasonably high cost. Compared to them, albucid also wins in this parameter - everyone can afford it.
Indications
The instructions do not say that you can use sodium sulfacyl drops in the nose.
In ENT practice, this remedy is used only to combat bacterial infections. It is not so easy to distinguish it from a viral one. Therefore, such a pathology cannot be treated independently, as if it were a common cold. You can drip Albucid into your nose only after examination by a doctor. He will prescribe the drug in case of prolonged runny nose and visible swelling of the mucous membrane.
Contraindications
The instructions indicate that these drops should not be used if you are hypersensitive to sulfonamides. Their use during pregnancy and lactation is also undesirable.
Use in children
Many pediatricians recommend instilling sodium sulfacyl eye drops into children's noses when they have a runny nose. The solution is administered orally to treat purulent and bacterial infections. Before use, rinse your nose with water and salt or using a special product.
Newborns are instilled with a 20% solution, 1 drop 3 times a day. It must be diluted with boiled water in a 1:1 ratio. This remedy is usually used before bedtime to help the baby sleep comfortably.
After a year, you can use 1-2 drops, the frequency of use remains the same. A 20% concentration is ideal for killing bacteria and not causing harm to the body.
From 6 years of age, you can increase the number of doses to 4, and after 12 years of age, children can use the product in an adult dosage and switch to a 30% concentration.
The drug is injected into the upper nostril while the child is lying on his side. Immediately after administration, you need to turn your head in the other direction and press your nostril to the nasal septum. This position should be maintained for seconds. Otherwise, the medicine will enter the nasopharynx and will not have the desired effect.
This product is mildly irritating and may cause your child to feel a burning sensation for a short time. The maximum course of treatment is a week. The exact dosage should be determined individually by a pediatrician.
The effect of the drug on the children's body
Pediatricians prescribe sodium sulfacil to be instilled into a child’s nose from the first days of life, explaining that it has few side effects. At the same time, the product has a good drying effect and kills bacteria. Small children do not know how to blow their nose, and thanks to albucid, inflammation of the sinuses becomes less, and the mucus comes out easier. It is easy to remove with an aspirator.
Such drops do not have the vasoconstrictor effect that many modern drugs for the treatment of the common cold have. This action is undesirable in principle and is addictive, especially for children.
Despite the fact that the drug is safe, it should not be used in newborns without consulting a pediatrician. Albucid has a powerful antimicrobial effect, so in some cases it can harm the baby.
Instructions
Before opening the bottle, wash your hands thoroughly. Before you drip sodium sulfacyl into your nose, you need to hold the bottle in your hands and warm it to body temperature. You must first rinse your nose with Aqua Maris or a water-salt solution.
A 10% or 20% solution in an amount of 2-3 drops is instilled 3-4 times a day for a week, subject to positive dynamics. If after this period there is no improvement, sodium sulfacyl must be changed to another antibacterial agent.
After the procedure, you must close the lid tightly. If the seal is lost, the drug is effective for 7 days, and then loses its properties. The shelf life of sulfacyl does not exceed 2 years if the tube is not opened. It is advisable to store the drug in a place inaccessible to sunlight and children, ideally in the refrigerator.
Side effects
Albucid can cause the following symptoms:
- Allergic reactions. As for children, first use should be done with caution. After a small amount of drops has been instilled, you should wait 30 minutes. If an allergy does not manifest itself, you can safely continue to use this product.
- Burning. It goes away on its own in a minute and does not cause negative consequences.
Side effects can be especially severe when interacting with diuretics and antidiabetic drugs. Also, you should not combine albucid with medications that contain silver ions.
An overdose can only occur with prolonged use and an increased dosage of the drug. The patient experiences redness of the mucous membrane, swelling and itching. Treatment can be continued, but taking into account a lower concentration of the solution.
The pharmaceutical industry offers a variety of new treatments for the common cold. But sodium sulfacyl still remains popular, its effect has been time-tested. This drug is known to be safe for use in newborns.
It can also be used during pregnancy, but only after consulting a doctor. After all, the expectant mother’s immunity is weakened, and even a harmless drug can cause an unpredictable reaction. It is better not to take risks by deciding to use a medicine without the advice of a specialist.
The manufacturer does not indicate a runny nose among the indications for use. Therefore, some doctors consider the use of albucid useless in this case and call its use an imitation of treatment. However, in contrast to them, there are many reviews that say the opposite.
Sulfacyl sodium helps with a runny nose, is safe to use and avoids serious complications. In addition, its affordability is another important factor that influences the choice of drug.

Sulfacyl sodium: can it be dripped into the nose?
Sulfacyl sodium is a well-known eye drop that has disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties. In some cases, doctors prescribe sodium sulfacil instilled into the nose: they cope well with a runny nose.
Release form and composition
The medicine is based on an aqueous solution of sulfacetamide, an antibacterial substance used in the treatment of purulent wounds, and additional components include hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate.
You can buy sodium sulfacyl, better known as Albucid, at any pharmacy chain. The drug is produced in plastic tubes of 5 and 10 ml, with 20% and 30% concentration of the active substance.
Therapeutic effect
In ophthalmology, Albucid - Sulfacyl sodium is used in the therapy of:
- purulent ulcers;
- blanorrhea;
- conjunctivitis;
- diseases of the organs of vision caused by chlamydial and gonorrheal infections;
- inflammation that occurs when a foreign object gets into the eyes.
The therapeutic effect of the drug is due to its properties to inhibit bacterial enzymes, without which their ability to reproduce and further vital activity ceases, due to which the patient recovers.
Can I put it in my nose?
The instructions for use of the drops contain instructions that Albucid is used to treat infectious diseases of the organs of vision.
However, in some cases, specialists prescribe a drug for a runny nose caused by a bacterial infection. Its difference from ordinary rhinitis lies in the greenish-yellow thick discharge, which cannot be gotten rid of with the usual vasoconstrictors.
Most often, the drug is prescribed for the treatment of sinusitis as part of complex therapy, rhinitis of unknown origin, and also for the prevention of adenoiditis.
Once in the nose, the substance has a drying effect, preventing the growth and spread of microbes. To get the best result, first the mucous surfaces of the nasal sinuses are washed with saline or sea salt solutions (Aqualor, Aquamaris, Dolphin). After this, Sulfacyl sodium should be dripped into the nose.
If the causative agent of the disease is resistant to the active component, the drug may become ineffective. In addition, a severe bacterial infection most often cannot be cured with this medication.
In case of serious illnesses, you cannot do without antibiotics: this is the only way to avoid the spread of the inflammatory process to other areas of the respiratory system.
Thus, Sulfacyl sodium has the following advantages:
- affordable price. Similar medications that include an antibiotic are much more expensive;
- absence of dependence and addiction. Almost all drugs that constrict blood vessels are addictive, so they are not recommended for use for more than 5-7 days;
- Local use of the drug prevents sulfacetamide from entering the circulatory system, so negative reactions occur in rare cases.
Many experts prefer Albucid as the most accessible and inexpensive remedy available in any home pharmacy.
Indications
In otolaryngology, Albucid is used to eliminate bacterial rhinitis, which is most often impossible to distinguish from viral rhinitis on your own. Therefore, the use of nasal drops is allowed only after visiting a doctor.
For chronic rhinitis caused by colds, adults should instill a 30% solution, children are prescribed a product with a concentration of 20%.
The drug is used in the treatment of runny nose caused by microorganisms sensitive to sulfonamides, and accompanied by thick yellow or green discharge from the nasal cavity.
Sulfacyl sodium can be used only for mild forms of pathology. With severe bacterial infections, instilling drops can not only become useless, but also cause harm. In addition, Albucid is completely ineffective against runny nose of allergic origin.
However, with inflammation of the middle ear, medicine can be a real salvation. To get rid of otitis media, drops are diluted with water in a ratio of one to two.
Instructions for use
Before opening the tube with the drug, you should wash your hands thoroughly. Before use, the bottle must be held in your palms for some time to warm it to room temperature.
First, the nasal cavities are washed with pharmaceuticals made from sea water or any saline solution.
Adults are recommended to instill 2-3 drops of sodium sulfacyl 30%, 3-4 times a day, for 1 week. If, over time, no positive dynamics are observed, the medication should be replaced with another.
After instillation, the cap is tightly closed and the bottle is placed in a dry place, protected from light, preferably in the refrigerator. The shelf life of an opened tube is 7 days.
Use in childhood
Many children's doctors advise instilling sodium sulfacyl into the nose of a child for purulent and bacterial diseases of the ENT organs. Before use, rinse the nasal cavity with sea water or pharmaceutical products, and then remove the mucus with an aspirator.
A specialist will help you calculate the exact dose of the drug. Albucid has an irritating effect on mucous surfaces, so it can cause a slight burning sensation. The duration of therapy in childhood is no more than 1 week.
Sulfacyl sodium in the nose is prescribed to children from birth. The medicine dries well and destroys pathogenic microorganisms. Using the product will help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, making mucus easier to remove. Albucid does not constrict blood vessels, unlike other drugs for the treatment of rhinitis.
Despite the safety of the substance for the body, the medication should be prescribed exclusively by a pediatrician to a child under one year of age. Independent use in this case is not permissible.
- Sulfacyl sodium is instilled into the baby's nose, one drop 3 times a day. To treat patients in this age group, only a 20% solution is used, which is pre-diluted with clean water in a 1:1 ratio;
- babies over one year old can use 1-2 drops 3 times a day;
- for children over 6 years of age, the frequency of instillation can be increased up to four times;
- Adolescents over 12 years of age are prescribed an adult dosage using a 30% drug.
The medicine is dripped into each nostril one by one while lying on its side, the liquid is held for seconds, after which the child is turned over to the other side.
Contraindications and side effects
According to the annotation, Sulfacyl should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to the active component. The drug is used with caution during pregnancy and lactation if the expected benefit to the woman outweighs the likely threat to the development of the fetus. However, in practice it has been established that the medication is safe throughout the entire period of gestation.
Side effects after use may include:
- allergic reactions. Most often occur in childhood. Before use, it is necessary to check individual sensitivity to the drug. To do this, one drop of the substance is dripped into the sinus and waited for half an hour. In the absence of any negative effects, treatment can be continued;
- burning. Local discomfort may occur immediately after application to the mucous membranes and disappear on its own after 2-3 minutes.
Cases of overdose have been recorded with prolonged use of the drug in high dosages. In this case, patients may experience local tissue redness, swelling and itching.
Currently, pharmaceutical companies offer a huge range of different medications to eliminate rhinitis. Sodium sulfacyl is still considered the safest, time-tested and accessible remedy: it will help cope with a runny nose and prevent complications of infection. However, it is recommended to use it for mild forms of the disease.

Is it possible to drip aloe into a child’s nose with a runny nose?
- Health
— 02.02..02.
There is such a universal medicine! And you don’t have to go to the pharmacy to get it. It often grows on window sills in almost every apartment. This is aloe (agave).
Of course, many housewives know about the medicinal properties of aloe. Some people use it as a cosmetic product (wipe their face with it); aloe juice is especially good at saving from sunburn during vacation in hot countries. In addition, aloe juice is recommended to be taken orally to improve the functioning of the digestive system. In addition to this, it is good to instill aloe into the nose when you have a runny nose. Aloe helps especially well against runny noses in children.
Aloe is probably the only medicine that really treats (and does not relieve symptoms) a runny nose in both children and adults.
What is the difference between a child's nose and an adult nose?
In newborns, the cartilage of the larynx forms very slowly, and there is very little space between the larynx and trachea. In addition, the baby’s skull bones are not yet fully developed. Therefore, respiratory diseases affect children differently, and such diseases must be taken very seriously. Serious diseases such as tonsillitis, sinusitis and other infectious diseases of the nasopharynx usually begin with a runny nose.
In addition, nasopharyngeal diseases in children occur differently than in adults. The symptoms of the disease are pronounced, children develop severe intoxication, and complications (intracranial and intraocular) occur much faster than in adults.
The bones of the skull in children are fully formed by the age of twelve, therefore, before the age of twelve, the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system in children is radically different from the treatment of the same diseases in adults.
Sometimes parents believe that a child’s runny nose is not a serious problem and begin to treat the child themselves. But “adult” treatment may be incorrect and, as a result, ineffective, so the disease is only suppressed and not completely cured. And much later, the “untreated problem” develops into pathological changes in the nasal mucosa. If the nasal mucosa is in abnormal condition, the child is more quickly exposed to various infections. In addition, due to the fact that the baby’s nose is not breathing well, the breathing rhythm is disrupted, the cardiovascular system begins to malfunction, and an insufficient amount of oxygen reaches the child’s brain. Which in turn negatively affects the mental and physical development of the newborn.
Therefore, as soon as you notice that the baby is not breathing through his nose, take action immediately.
The best way to treat runny nose in newborns
Your child’s doctor usually suggests treating a runny nose using traditional methods - drops that constrict the blood vessels of the nose, antibiotics, immunomodulating drugs, drops based on iodine. Not all doctors remember that aloe in the nose helps a lot with a runny nose.
Aloe juice - what is its composition?
Aloe is a unique plant. Its juice has both antibacterial and nutritional effects. Even streptococci, staphylococci, diphtheria, dysentery and typhoid bacilli are afraid of aloe juice. The nutritional value of aloe is twelve vitamins, eighteen amino acids and a large number of enzymes.
What can be treated with aloe juice?
Aloe juice perfectly helps to cope with diseases of the oral cavity (for example, periodontal disease, stomatitis). In addition, aloe juice can treat conjunctivitis (eye disease). Aloe juice can cure skin diseases - various dermatitis - or simply moisturize the skin well. In the treatment of burns, cuts, wounds, ulcers and lichen, aloe juice is simply irreplaceable. Aloe juice is also included in cosmetic creams, shampoos and balms, because one of the unique properties of aloe is cell regeneration. Even in Ancient Egypt, Queen Cleopatra used the rejuvenating properties of aloe juice. In addition, aloe is very good for a runny nose.
Is it possible to drop aloe into a child’s nose with a runny nose?
Most often, drops for a runny nose only relieve symptoms, but do not cure. In addition, vasoconstrictor drops should not be used for longer than five to seven days to avoid addiction. And besides, many drops for the common cold have a contraindication - they cannot be used by children under three years old, and some drops even up to twelve years old.
In this regard, it is ideal for newborns to instill aloe drops for a runny nose. Aloe in the nose for a runny nose acts as an antibacterial agent very gently - medicine has already proven this property of aloe juice for a runny nose. At the same time that aloe juice for a runny nose fights pathogenic bacteria, it also nourishes the nasal mucosa with microelements, vitamins and amino acids. Aloe juice also activates the newborn's immune system, thus helping to cope with infection. This happens because aloe juice contains vitamins A, B, C, E and antibiotics of plant origin (because of this, they act on the baby’s body without complications, unlike those created by man).
Aloe juice in the nose for a runny nose acts very quickly, because the necessary antibacterial natural substances are much faster absorbed into the newborn’s blood through a network of capillaries located in the mucous membrane of the baby’s nose. The result appears almost instantly - by dripping aloe into the nose with a runny nose, the swelling of the mucous membrane of the baby’s nose disappears, and in addition, not only the symptoms of a runny nose disappear, but the runny nose itself is treated. Aloe juice helps newborns with nasal congestion. In addition, you can instill aloe juice into the nose for sinusitis.
Are there any contraindications for using aloe juice for a runny nose?
Aloe juice is a biologically active substance, so any person, especially a newborn, should check for allergies before dripping aloe juice into the nose with a runny nose. If an allergy to aloe juice appears in a newborn, this does not mean that it will remain with him forever. After some time, you can do an allergy test again.
Aloe juice should not be consumed by people prone to hypertension and with diseases of the cardiovascular system, because the biologically active components of aloe juice increase blood pressure.
Before dripping aloe juice into your nose when you have a runny nose, be sure to consult your doctor so that he can approve your actions.
How to make drops from aloe juice?
Due to the fact that aloe juice has a strong antibacterial effect and can irritate the mucous membrane of a newborn’s nose, it is diluted with water before dripping aloe into the nose. To make aloe drops into your nose, it is better to take an older plant (over three years old). Cut off one leaf of the plant. Sometimes drops for runny nose are prepared from freshly cut leaves. In this case, the mucous membrane of the child's nose may turn red, because undiluted aloe juice has a strong biological effect.
Rinse the aloe leaf very well with water and pour boiling water over it. Then dry it with a napkin, wrap it in paper and put it in the refrigerator. After about a day, you can prepare aloe juice for a runny nose for a newborn.
When an aloe leaf is kept in a dark place in the refrigerator, its natural components become more active. A cut and washed aloe leaf can be stored in the refrigerator for ten to fourteen days, after which time it becomes useless.
Water-based aloe juice drops for colds
It is best to prepare drops of aloe juice for a runny nose in a small amount immediately before dropping them on your child. To prepare aloe juice drops for a runny nose for newborns, take one part water and one part aloe juice. But sometimes aloe juice for drops from a runny nose is diluted in two parts of water.
Prepare drops of aloe juice into the nose for a runny nose in older children in the proportion of two parts aloe juice and one part water.
It would be better to boil the water for preparing cold drops.
If you decide to first squeeze all the juice out of an aloe leaf, and then prepare drops for a runny nose for your child, then know that the squeezed aloe juice retains its properties for only one day, while in the refrigerator.
Oil-based aloe juice drops for colds
In addition to water, aloe juice can be diluted with vegetable oil. Such drops will not only cope well with a runny nose, but will also additionally soften the mucous membrane of a child’s nose, and also protect against drying out.
To prepare drops for runny nose from oil-based aloe juice, take vegetable oil (olive, sunflower, hemp) and heat it in a water bath without bringing it to a boil. Add freshly squeezed aloe juice to the container with oil. In this case, maintain the following proportion - three parts oil and one part aloe juice. Mix everything well and continue heating. Then cool to the desired temperature and drop it into the child’s nose. Sometimes cotton spindles are moistened in an oil solution of aloe juice (it’s better to make them yourself), which are inserted briefly into the baby’s nose for a longer-lasting treatment for a runny nose. Make sure that the cotton wool spindles are much longer than the nasal passage in the child's nostrils.
Sometimes, in order to cure a cold or runny nose in a child or an adult, you don’t need to rush headlong and grab a big wallet and immediately run to the pharmacy and buy expensive medicines. It’s enough to take a close look at your home, look around and understand that all the most valuable things are at arm’s length – on the windowsill. You just have to arm yourself with knowledge.
Runny nose and medications for the common cold - School of Dr. Komarovsky (video):
Agave (aloe), grown at home, has a colossal supply of medicinal qualities, but for some reason we do not use its healing properties either against infectious diseases, or for rejuvenation, or to combat diseases of the oral cavity and eyes. Moreover, we do not use its qualities to treat runny nose in small and large children. Take into account all the tips on using aloe juice to treat a runny nose.

Thank you, you explained very clearly in the article the benefits of aloe for a runny nose. I try to treat runny noses in children only with homeopathic remedies - it will be useful to me, I’ll try it. But as I understand it, you still need to first clear your nose of mucus as much as possible with saline solutions like Aquamaster, so that aloe works better.

Is it possible to drip aloe into the nose when you have a runny nose?
I remember when I was a child, my mother always dripped aloe juice into my nose when I had a runny nose. I really didn't like this procedure. You had to lie down and wait until the bitter droplet got into your nose, and then went down into your throat and began to sting terribly. Then you felt the urge to sneeze, and the snot flowed even more strongly. My childhood was spent in the village, during the years of perestroika, and then it was not possible to buy vasoconstrictor or medicinal nasal drops or sea water sprays. We used what we had. And for a runny nose there was only aloe juice.
Now I have a child myself. Colds don't happen often, but they do come to us. And I was interested to know the opinion of modern doctors about whether it is possible to drip aloe juice into the nose with a runny nose, especially for children. I found many videos on YouTube where this topic is discussed. Both doctors and mothers share their experiences. So, everyone agrees that aloe juice can be dripped into children with a runny nose, it will be useful for them. But! The juice must be diluted with water.
Preparing drops for children
First, the aloe leaf needs to be cut with a knife, but preferably not a metal one, but a ceramic one. Then put the pieces on clean gauze, squeeze out the juice, and then dilute it with boiled water at room temperature. The exact proportion was given in only one source: 1 to 10 (1 part aloe juice and 10 parts water). But it seemed to me to be too weak a concentration. By the way, my mother dripped aloe juice straight from the leaf to me. Apparently that's why it was so bitter. But, as my personal experience has shown, this did not harm me. I do not and never have had chronic nasopharyngeal diseases, everything is fine.
How to drip aloe into a child's nose:
You can use drops prepared from aloe juice 3-4 times a day, 2 drops in each nostril.
Therapeutic effect:
Aloe juice contains flavonoids, vitamins and enzymes. Thanks to them, aloe juice has a bactericidal and immunostimulating effect. Aloe juice is useful for sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis and sore throat. You can not only drip the solution with juice into your nose, but also gargle with it. And when a sore throat begins, it is useful to take a piece of the leaf in your mouth and simply chew.
For a runny nose, aloe juice does not have a vasoconstrictor effect; it relieves the inflammation itself in the nasal mucosa. That is why it is not recommended to use it together with other nasal drops.
In children, aloe juice makes them want to wander around, and all the mucus from the nose comes away easily and abundantly. The nasal passages are cleared, and the inflammatory process gradually subsides.
Aloe juice for a runny nose in adults
- Adults drip 2-3 drops of aloe juice into each nasal passage 3-4 times a day.
- It is also useful to soak cotton swabs in aloe juice and insert them into the nasal passages for a minute. You can perform such manipulations 4-5 times a day, one of them at night.
Can aloe be used for pregnant women?
In one of the videos, the following information was given: aloe juice has a powerful immunostimulating effect, so it should not be used during pregnancy or for patients with cancer. Then I took from the shelf a thin book “Aloe and Kalanchoe. The green doctor is on your windowsill." There are recipes for traditional medicine with aloe juice and the healing effect of this plant is described.
The book says that pregnant women at risk of miscarriage can take a steam based on medicinal herbs and with aloe juice in its composition, among other things. Napar is used to strengthen the immune system and uterine muscles, to prevent colds, and to protect against infections. If anyone is interested, write in the comments, I can post recipes from this book. And in case of severe toxicosis in the first months of pregnancy, traditional medicine doctors recommend taking an infusion with aloe juice. It will help with nausea and vomiting.
So, it is a controversial question whether pregnant women can consume aloe juice. Considering that the expectant mother is now also responsible for the health of the baby, before using any medicines, including traditional ones, you should definitely consult a doctor.

Is it possible to drip aloe into a child's nose?
Aloe is a universal folk remedy that helps with a wide variety of problems. The juice and pulp of the magical plant relieves inflammation and eliminates harmful bacteria, accelerating wound healing. Aloe is used to treat colds, eye and skin diseases. It effectively treats throat and cough. But this remedy is most popular in the treatment of runny nose. In this article we will look at whether it is possible to drip aloe into a child’s nose. And we will learn how to properly give this remedy to a baby.
Beneficial properties of aloe
Gel and juice are extracted from the pulp of aloe leaves or, as it is also called, agave. These substances are used separately or as an integral component of a home remedy or medication. Aloe has a direct effect on the soft and thin layers of the skin, which allows you to restore the skin, relieve burns and ulcers, speed up the healing of wounds or cuts, and get rid of rashes. It helps with inflammation in the mouth, dermatitis, psoriasis and other allergic skin manifestations.
Aloe juice is the basis of a medicinal drink that improves digestion, restores the body after an ulcer, and helps in the treatment of stomach diseases. In addition, this remedy lowers blood sugar levels, improves blood circulation and fights anemia. Aloe is used to treat conjunctivitis, myopia and various eye diseases, asthma, cough and sore throat.
But the most popular recipe is aloe in pure or diluted form for instillation into the nose for a runny nose. A few drops of this juice will help cleanse the mucous membranes and relieve inflammation. Folk remedies are safer for a small child than pharmaceutical drugs. The advantage of agave is that the juice quickly penetrates the blood and has an immediate effect. Immediately after administration, the nose will clear and the baby will feel relief.
Aloe will not only cure runny nose, rhinitis and sinusitis, but also strengthen the immune system. The plant contains a large number of vitamins, including vitamins B, A, C and many others. In addition, it contains important minerals and beneficial amino acids. These components have a general strengthening effect and increase the baby’s immunity, which is especially important during periods of influenza and ARVI epidemics.
Is there any harm from aloe?
Despite the beneficial properties of the plant, there is no need to get carried away with aloe treatment. Pulp and juice can cause allergies and various negative reactions, including poisoning. The child may experience stomach pain, inflammation and a rash. To avoid such problems, it is important to follow the dosage and be sure to check the baby for an allergic reaction before treatment.
The course of treatment should not exceed two weeks, otherwise aloe will begin to accumulate in the human body and turn into a dangerous carcinogen. This leads to the formation of various tumors. Aloe should not be consumed by pregnant women and is not recommended for people with diabetes.
Aloe juice for runny noses for children can be safely instilled at any age, even for babies under one year old. Contraindications may include an allergic reaction and individual intolerance. However, before using the product, it is better to consult a doctor. In addition, for safe use it is important to follow the dosage accurately.
If used incorrectly, side effects may occur such as inflammation and irritation of the skin, tearing and swelling of the mucous membranes, burning in the nose and sneezing, deterioration of well-being, and allergies. Agave should be used especially carefully for small children who have not yet turned one year old.
How to make aloe juice
Aloe is most effective in the form of juice. It is easy to obtain liquid from dense and fleshy leaves yourself at home. To get the medicinal liquid, you just need to pierce the skin and squeeze the leaf. The juice should be obtained immediately after you pick or cut the leaf and consumed within the next few hours.
However, for greater effect, experts advise leaving the plucked leaves in the refrigerator for 12 hours before receiving the healing liquid. In any case, it is not recommended to store freshly squeezed aloe juice, as it loses most of the active biological substances and healing properties. As a result, the plant will no longer be able to produce the expected result.
To get the most beneficial juice, use a mature plant over three years old. Before use, it is not recommended to water the plant for three to five days, so that water does not accumulate in the leaves, which will dilute the beneficial elements and reduce the effectiveness of the healing properties.
Pluck or trim two or three lower leaves, wash and wipe dry. By the way, the most valuable are the thick and prickly leaves. Wrap the torn or trimmed leaves in dark paper and refrigerate for at least 12 hours. After this, squeeze the juice out of the leaves and use the product throughout the day. Now let's take a closer look at how to drip aloe into children's noses.
How to give aloe to a child
- It is not recommended for small children under 1-2 years of age to drip aloe juice in its pure form, as it can burn the nasal mucosa and cause discomfort. For newborns, the product is diluted in boiled water in a ratio of 1:10, for children over three months old - 1:5, after six months - 1:3. By the way, Kalanchoe juice is diluted in the same proportion, which is also effectively taken for a runny nose;
- For children over 1-2 years old, aloe juice can be instilled in its pure form. However, you can only use a warm product at room temperature;
- Before first use, check if your baby has an allergic reaction to this plant. To do this, apply aloe juice using a cotton pad to the skin in the elbow area, on the wrist or under the child’s nose. If no negative reaction occurs within two days, the product can be safely used for the baby. In case of an allergic reaction, you will have to look for another remedy;
- You can prepare special drops using honey or olive oil to speed up recovery. In the first case, warm liquid honey is mixed with boiled water, and then aloe juice is added. The second recipe implies that the olive oil needs to be brought to a boil and cooled. Then the oil is mixed with agave juice 3:1;
- Any drops containing aloe should be instilled only when warm. Therefore, before use, heat the product in a water bath;
- You need to instill drops three to four drops into each nostril 3-4 times a day. The duration of treatment should not exceed days!
Aloe for cough for children
Aloe is effectively used to treat coughs and sore throats. In this case, the combination of plant juice and honey helps perfectly. Of course, when using such a product, the child should not be allergic to honey. Pediatricians do not recommend introducing this product into complementary foods until at least one year of age, and some experts prohibit its use up to three years. When you can give honey to a baby, see here.
To prepare aloe with cough honey for children, mix natural honey and agave juice in a ratio of 1 to 5. For children over three years old, you can mix the components in half. The resulting composition is given three to six times a day, one teaspoon. After taking it, it is not recommended to eat or drink for half an hour. A mixture of honey and aloe juice in equal proportions on an empty stomach also effectively helps with constipation.
Aloe with cough honey can be prepared with the addition of butter, goose fat and cocoa. To do this, take 100 grams of natural honey and oil, 15 grams of aloe juice and 20 grams of fat. Mix the ingredients and heat in a water bath. Do not bring to a boil! Add the product to tea and give up to six times a day, always before bed. You can mix only three components, including honey, butter and agave.
Aloe for child's immunity
Aloe with honey will help get rid of lingering coughs, colds and bronchitis. In addition, this is an excellent preventive remedy for raising and strengthening the immune system. Aloe with honey for immunity as a preventive measure is suitable for children over three years of age. To prepare the product, mix honey and agave juice in equal proportions, you can add a little lemon juice. Take before bed as a tea supplement, but no longer than two weeks in a row.
To prepare another remedy for immunity, take an aloe leaf, rinse, wipe, wrap in dark paper and put in the refrigerator. Then turn the leaf through a meat grinder, mix the resulting juice with a glass of liquid natural honey. You need to take a teaspoon three times a day before meals, but not longer than two weeks in a row. It is also suitable for children over three years of age.
Another remedy for boosting immunity is a remedy with honey, aloe, lemon and nuts. Take honey, agave and lemon juice, and chopped walnuts in equal proportions. Mix the ingredients and leave for two weeks. Give a child over three years old a teaspoon before meals. You can drink the elixir with warm milk or water.
What else will help a child with a runny nose?
The safest remedy for a runny nose for newborns and small children is considered to be a saline solution. To prepare the product, mix a teaspoon of sea or regular table salt with a liter of boiled warm water. Place one or two saline drops in each nostril every hour. In addition, drops from decoctions of yarrow, chamomile or calendula will help cure a runny nose.
For young children, antibiotics, rinsing the nose with a bulb or an enema are contraindicated. Since the baby does not yet know how to blow his nose on his own, you can use a special aspirator for newborns. Nasal drops should only be used in extreme cases and only after consultation with a doctor.

Nasal drops: classification, names, use for various diseases
There is probably not a person who has never used nasal drops in his life. They are so familiar in our medicine cabinet that we no longer perceive this remedy as a medicine. The hand reaches out to the treasured bottle at the first sign of a runny nose or nasal congestion.
It’s clear that you don’t want to run to the clinic with a mild cold, but you want to quickly get rid of the “squelching” that has so inopportunely overtaken you, because you have to go to work tomorrow and need to be in shape. We go to the pharmacy and ask “the best nasal drops.”
But what do we know about such a common remedy? Why are there so many different names for cold drops in pharmacies? Why do doctors prescribe different drugs to different patients? For what diseases, besides the common cold, are nasal drops used? Can nasal drops cause harm? Any more or less educated person should know the answers to these questions in order to help themselves and their loved ones avoid the consequences of improper use of nasal drops.
What types of nasal drops are there?
Nasal drops are a dosage form. These include drugs and paramedicines with different mechanisms of action. Nasal drops are used for rhinitis (infectious, vasomotor, allergic), rhinosinusitis, otitis, adenoiditis, to prevent ARVI and increase immunity, moisturizing the nasal mucosa. All drops and sprays used intranasally (directly into the nose) can be divided into the following groups:
- Vasoconstrictor drops.
- Saline solutions.
- Antiseptics.
- Nasal drops with antibiotics.
- Immunostimulants.
- Antiallergic drops and sprays.
- Herbal medicines.
- Complex drops.
- Homeopathic drops.
Ideally, any treatment, even a common runny nose, should be prescribed by a doctor. But in reality this is not always feasible. You can start using some drugs on your own, but not more than 3-5 days.
Vasoconstrictor nasal drops
This is the most common and popular group of remedies for the common cold. Another name for them is decongestants. The main effect of these drugs is their effect on the α-receptors of the vessels of the nasal mucosa. Due to the stimulation of these receptors, vasoconstriction occurs, swelling decreases, and mucus formation decreases. Nasal congestion decreases, nasal breathing is restored. In fact, we do not treat a runny nose with these remedies; we only dry out the mucous membrane to make our life easier.
There are several dozen names for vasoconstrictor nasal drops and sprays. But the main components are represented mainly by 4 types:
- Naphazolin (trade names - Naphthyzin, Sanorin). These are short-acting drugs (up to 4 hours).
- Xylometazoline (Galazolin, Otrivin, Rinorus, Dlynos, Rinostop). The effect of xylometazoline lasts up to 10 hours.
- Oxymetazoline (Nazol, Nazivin, Fervex spray for the common cold). The longest-acting drugs are up to 12 hours.
- Phenylephrine (part of Vibrocil, children's nasal drops Nazol Baby (for children under 2 years old), Nazol Kids (for children over 2 years old). The effect of phenylephrine is short-lived and the effect is less pronounced than that of the three above-mentioned substances. However, it is much safer and approved for use by children.
Vasoconstrictor drops can be used without a doctor’s prescription for no more than 3-5 days. If congestion does not go away during this time, you should consult a doctor for examination. Why should you not abuse drugs from this group? The main side effect of vasoconstrictor drops is the dependence that occurs with their long-term use. Vascular receptors stop responding to the usual dose of medication, and drops are used more and more often to relieve symptoms. As a result of uncontrolled use of these drugs, vasomotor rhinitis can develop, which is very difficult to treat.
To avoid such dependence, it is important to follow the following rules:
- Use vasoconstrictor drops only when the nose is not breathing at all. Only possible for the night. Remember! Drops do not cure, but only relieve symptoms.
- Use other means between regular doses or instead of them (rinsing the nose with saline solution, inhaling with essential oils, instilling oil drops, for example, peach oil).
- Do not use drops from this group for longer than the recommended period. Replacing some vasoconstrictor drugs with others (for example, “Dlyanos” with “Nazol” does not avoid the development of addiction).
For some diseases, you cannot do without vasoconstrictor drops. For sinusitis, other sinusitis, acute otitis media, eustachitis, these drugs are used to reduce swelling of the anastomosis of the paranasal sinuses and auditory tube, which helps to improve the outflow of inflammatory secretions and better penetration of antibacterial drugs into the site of inflammation. It must be remembered that this type of nasal drops is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Saline solutions
Saline solutions for rinsing the nose, offered in pharmacies (Aquamaris, Aqua-ENT, Physiomer, etc.), are nothing more than sterilized sea water, with a salt concentration close to the composition of blood - an isotonic solution. A solution of this concentration allows you to maintain the normal physiological state of the nasal mucosa, moisturizes it, and cleanses it of mucus, germs, dust, and allergens.
Saline solutions have virtually no contraindications; they can be used even by newborn children and pregnant women.
An expensive pharmacy solution can be replaced with regular saline or you can prepare a solution at home by dissolving 1 teaspoon of sea or regular table salt in 2 glasses of water.
Rinsing the nasal cavity with saline solutions is carried out for colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, and adenoiditis in a child. Such irrigation has a good effect for the prevention of ARVI during the cold season and the prevention of allergic rhinitis during the period of expected exacerbation, flowering of plants that cause allergies.
Antiseptic solutions
An antiseptic is a substance that, upon direct contact with the skin or mucous membranes, causes the death of infectious agents. Therefore, the use of nasal drops with an antiseptic is a therapeutic measure, not a symptomatic one. An antiseptic is prescribed both for self-use in patients with purulent nasal discharge, and for rinsing the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses during medical procedures.
The most famous antiseptics:
- Protargol and collargol. These are the oldest but still used antiseptic drugs. They contain silver ions and, in addition to their bactericidal effect, also have an astringent and anti-inflammatory effect. They are prescribed mainly to children, as they have fewer contraindications compared to other antibacterial agents.
- Dioxidine.
- Miramistin.
- Octenisept.
Nasal drops with antibiotics
The most well-known antibiotic for topical use for diseases of the upper respiratory tract is Bioparox. This is an aerosol whose main active ingredient is fusafungine. This drug is active against most bacteria, most often causing inflammation of the nose, pharynx, larynx, as well as against fungi of the genus Candida. Inhalations are carried out both through the mouth and through the nose.
Isofra - drops or spray containing the antibiotic framycetin (from the group of aminoglycosides).
2 antibiotics, neomycin and polymyxin B, contains Polydex nasal spray. It also contains the vasoconstrictor component phenylephrine and the hormone dexamethasone. Such a complex composition provides a comprehensive antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and decongestant effect of this drug.
Sometimes doctors prescribe antibacterial drops into the nose, which are produced exclusively as eye drops. These are, for example, Albucid, Tsiprolet, chloramphenicol drops. Do not be afraid of such prescriptions, this is an antibiotic solution, and its effect is the same everywhere.
Immunomodulatory drops
Immunomodulatory nasal drops are used to stimulate local and general immunity. These medications are prescribed not only for treatment, but also for the prevention of acute respiratory diseases, as well as exacerbation of chronic diseases of the nasopharynx.
Immunostimulating drugs should include, first of all, interferon drugs. They are also called antiviral, since they inhibit the reproduction of viruses, but their main effect is to increase antiviral immunity. This is a human leukocyte interferon for intranasal use. It is available in powder in ampoules; before use, it must be diluted with water and the resulting solution must be used immediately. Place 5 drops in each nasal passage. The earlier treatment is started, the more pronounced the effect. From the first days of influenza or ARVI, the frequency of instillation is every 2 hours.
The drug of recombinant interferon (genetically engineered, not obtained from donor blood) is Grippferon. It is considered safer and more convenient to use, since it comes in a ready-made solution and can be stored for up to 30 days after opening.
Derinat is an immunomodulator used in the complex treatment of many acute and chronic diseases. Increases the body's resistance to viruses, bacteria, fungi. Derinat nasal drops are prescribed for both treatment and prevention of various inflammatory diseases of the nose and pharynx.
IRS-19 is a mixture of lysates (residues) of various bacteria, in response to the introduction of which protective antibodies are produced.
Antiallergic drops and sprays
With allergic rhinitis, inflammation of the nasal mucosa also develops with the development of edema and the release of copious mucus. However, the nature of this inflammation is somewhat different. Treatment of allergic rhinitis and rhinosinusitis is usually long-term, so ordinary vasoconstrictor drops are not suitable here.
Nasal drops for allergies can be divided into 2 large groups - non-hormonal and hormonal.
Non-hormonal drops and sprays: these are antihistamines Allergodil, Histimet (eye drops, but also prescribed in the nose), and mast cell membrane stabilizers, Ifiral drops, Cromoglin, Cromohexal, Kromosol sprays.
For severe allergic rhinitis, hormonal drugs are prescribed - Aldecin, Beconase, Flixonase, Nasonex, Nasobek. They are available in the form of sprays, have virtually no systemic effect (not absorbed into the blood) and are suitable for long-term use (up to 6 months). Hormonal sprays are sometimes used in the complex treatment of acute and chronic sinusitis, but in these cases they are prescribed for a short time.
Nazaval spray can also be classified as a group of antiallergic drugs. However, it is used for the prevention rather than the treatment of allergic rhinitis - when used, a protective film is formed on the nasal mucosa, which prevents the penetration of the allergen. Nazoval is not absorbed into the blood and is approved for use by pregnant women and children.
Phytodrops (plant-based drops)
Topical preparations containing herbal ingredients are always popular with patients who prefer to be treated “without chemicals”. These drugs are quite effective in the early stages of the disease and can be used in combination with other drugs (for example, vasoconstrictors). Pharmacy forms of herbal nasal drops are almost always made on an oil basis, so they have a softening effect on the mucous membrane and are effective in people with atrophic rhinitis.
The most famous herbal drops - Pinosol contain essential oils of pine, eucalyptus, mint plus the anti-inflammatory drug thymol. An oil solution of Chlorophyllipt (antiseptic and bactericidal effect), Kameton (an anti-inflammatory aerosol for the throat, but with the same success used in the nose) are also used in the nose.
Complex nasal drops
Complex drops are dosage forms that contain not one, but several components. There are ready-made drugs with patented trade names. These include the above-mentioned Polydexa, Pinosol (anti-inflammatory drug thymol + a mixture of essential oils + vitamin A), Rinofluimucil (vasoconstrictor + acetylcysteine, a thinning nasal secretion), Nazol Advance (oxymetazoline + essential oils), Vibrocil (Phenylephrine + antiallergic component Dimetinden), Sanorin - anallergin (vasoconstrictor + antihistamine components).
The production of complex drops can be ordered at a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription. Sometimes you can make such a medicine yourself by purchasing the necessary components. On various forums on the Internet you can find many recipes for complex drops, presented by their authors “as the most effective nasal drops.” However, we need to remind you once again about the dangers of self-medication!
Complex drops are designed to make our lives easier by providing a complex “2 in 1” or “3 in 1” effect along several pathogenesis links at once. As a rule, complex drops consist of an antibiotic, a vasoconstrictor, hormones, and an antiallergic drug.
Meanwhile, the use of complex drops is not entirely correct treatment. Due to the presence of a vasoconstrictor component in them, their use should be limited to a few days, while antibacterial treatment is usually required for 7-10 days. Also, vasoconstrictors, when used simultaneously, slow down the absorption of antibacterial agents, so ideally they should be diluted in time with an interval of min. But the convenience and rapid effectiveness of complex drops still outweighs all these pharmacodynamic inconsistencies, which is why they are so popular among the population.
Homeopathic nasal drops should be highlighted as a separate line. The most famous of them are Euphorbium compositum, Thuja oil (EDAS 801), Rhinitol (EDAS 131). One can argue a lot about the effectiveness of homeopathic treatment, but it always has adherents. In addition, homeopathic drops have virtually no contraindications; they are often prescribed to children.
Treatment of a runny nose with folk remedies
There are many recipes for homemade nose drops: from well-known to completely exotic.
The most common, accessible to everyone and familiar to us from childhood:
- Aloe juice, Kalanchoe juice, red beet juice, carrot juice.
- Oils: peach, olive, menthol, eucalyptus.
- Complex homemade drops: beet or onion juice + honey + vegetable oil.
All these remedies have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties and are quite effective for uncomplicated runny nose.
It is not recommended to use herbal extracts and honey in people prone to allergies. And, of course, if a runny nose does not go away for more than 6 days, you should consult a doctor.
Nasal drops for children
You should not self-treat a runny nose in children. There is no need to choose drops for your child based on reviews from friends or recommendations found on the Internet. Many drops have age restrictions - what is suitable for a five-year-old child is absolutely contraindicated for a 2-year-old child, and even more so for a newborn. Even well-known folk remedies must be used very carefully.
Children may overdose, even poisoning, more quickly than adults. This is especially true for vasoconstrictor drops. Drops with essential oils may cause bronchospasm in young children. You should also know that children under 2 years of age do not use sprays, but only drops.
