Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
During the ARVI epidemic, few people manage to protect themselves from the disease. Under the influence of multiple factors, our immunity weakens more and more every year, and the viruses themselves endlessly mutate, thereby disarming a person in this fight.

Nevertheless, Oxolinic ointment remains one of the most popular preventive and therapeutic agents, which is used by a significant part of the population during periods of acute respiratory viral infection.
The task of “not catching the virus” is especially firm for pregnant women. The course of the disease may have a negative impact on the developing fetus. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that the number of medications and even folk remedies for acute respiratory infections allowed for use during pregnancy can be counted on one hand. So any infection transmitted by airborne droplets poses considerable danger to a pregnant woman.
That is why therapists and gynecologists recommend their patients to use Oxolinic ointment.
What is good about oxolin?
Oxolin is an active substance (let us clarify that it is synthetic), on the basis of which pharmacists develop and produce drugs for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases. It can be Oxolinic ointment, Tetraxoline, Oxonaphthylene or simply Oxolinum.
The action of oxoline is based on the fact that it makes the virus inactive. True, not just any virus, namely the influenza virus, herpes simplex virus or adenovirus. That is, pathogenic bacteria that enter the nasal mucosa during inhalation meet oxoline, which is located on this very mucosa, and cannot go further and act. It becomes impossible for the virus to penetrate deep into the respiratory tract and, therefore, reproduce there. All bacteria remain paralyzed at the entrance.
Perhaps the explanation is too primitive, but we hope it is understandable to everyone. And in this light, Oxolinic ointment looks very attractive. Especially when you consider its availability: the product is very inexpensive compared to other antiviral drugs. Moreover, it can even be used for treatment when it is too late to protect against the virus. Well, it’s simply a sin not to take advantage.
How to use Oxolinic ointment?
Depending on the percentage of oxolin, the ointment is available in the following forms: 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 3%.
Oxolinic ointment is used not only for treating mucous membranes in the treatment and prevention of viral diseases (putting it in the nose or behind the eyelid), but also for viral skin diseases and the treatment of herpes simplex.
In order to prevent the flu, it is recommended to lubricate the nasal mucosa with Oxolinic ointment before each exit from home, especially if you are going to crowded places: theatre, office, public transport, indoor market. Simply place a small amount of ointment in each nasal passage and rub lightly. For preventive purposes, it is enough to do this 2 times a day; to treat viral rhinitis, treat the mucous membrane 2-3 times a day for 3 days.
Do not forget to wash off any remaining Oxolinic ointment every time you return home. This should be done with warm water.
The total duration of use of Oxolinic ointment for preventive purposes is 25 days (during the most dangerous period in terms of infection).
Is it possible to use Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy?
And again our song is good... Pregnancy is not among the contraindications to the use of Oxolinic ointment. There is nothing there at all, except for increased sensitivity to oxoline, which can manifest itself as a burning sensation after applying the ointment. However, in the column “pregnancy and lactation” it is written in black and white that the use of the drug during these periods is possible only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
This means (and pharmacists say this directly) that more or less adequate studies have not been conducted on the adverse effects on the pregnant woman and fetus from the use of the ointment. Therefore, you can use it (or prescribe it to pregnant women) only at your own peril and risk.
Despite this, doctors, without any fear, prescribe “Oxolinka” to pregnant women and assure that it is not only possible to use it during pregnancy at all stages of pregnancy, but also necessary. After all, the chances of picking up an infection in a weakened and vulnerable pregnant body are very high. This is even more true for those women who often visit crowded places.
True, some therapists still recommend choosing a homeopathic medicine for this purpose - Euphorbium compositum.

Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
Any infection transmitted by airborne droplets poses a danger to a pregnant woman. One of the most accessible and popular remedies approved during pregnancy for the prevention of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza is Oxolinic ointment. This drug contains an active substance with a very complex name “Dioxotetrahydroxytetrahydronaphthalene” or trade name - Oxolin.
Oxolinic ointment - indications for use
Oxolinic ointment is a Russian-made antiviral agent for topical use that can reduce the effect of a virus that has entered the nasal mucosa, reducing its activity and protecting cells from the virus entering them. The drug is available in the form of a nasal ointment for external and local use in two dosages depending on the percentage of oxoline - 0.25% or 3%.
The action of oxoline is aimed at fighting the virus, while the virus becomes less active, which is exactly what is required when using such ointments.
Nasal ointment containing 0.25% oxoline is used both for the prevention of influenza and ARVI, and for the treatment of viral rhinitis. When applied to the nasal mucosa, up to 20% of the drug is absorbed, but does not accumulate in the pregnant woman’s body and is excreted by the kidneys within 24 hours.
During the period of rise and maximum development of an outbreak of influenza and ARVI (for 25 days) or in close contact with a patient, as a preventative measure during pregnancy, it is necessary to lubricate the nasal membrane every day 2-3 times a day.
When treating viral rhinitis, the nasal mucosa is lubricated 2-3 times a day for 3-4 days.
An ointment for topical use containing 0.25% oxoline is used as a prophylaxis for influenza, in the treatment of viral rhinitis and viral eye diseases. In the latter case, a 2 to 3 mm strip of medication is placed behind the lower eyelid 3-4 times a day.
An ointment for external use containing 3% oxolin is used to treat warts (common, flat, genital warts), herpes, lichen and other skin diseases. To treat warts, apply the medicine to their surface 2-3 times for 2 weeks to 2 months. When applied to the skin, about 5% of the drug is absorbed. Side effects include a burning sensation and dermatitis.
Contraindications
The only contraindication is individual intolerance to the drug and its components (liquid paraffin and petroleum jelly).
Is it possible to use oxolinic ointment during pregnancy?
According to the instructions for use, oxolinic ointment should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The only contraindication is hypersensitivity to the drug.
From the point of view of evidence-based medicine, the effectiveness of nasal applications with oxoline has not been confirmed. Therefore, some doctors, among specific preventive measures for influenza, attach particular importance to vaccination and advise pregnant women to take general preventive measures, including maximum limitation of communication with strangers during periods of increased morbidity, taking vitamins and rinsing the nose with saline solutions that wash out viruses from the mucous membrane. In crowded places - public transport, clinics, shops, or when in close contact with a sick person, wear a gauze bandage.
Other doctors recommend that a pregnant woman protect herself and her child from the penetration of viruses through the nasal mucosa, and therefore allow the use of oxolinic ointment before going out, especially when visiting crowded places.
In addition, oxolinic ointment during pregnancy can be used not only nasally, but also for the treatment of eye viral diseases, placing the ointment behind the eyelid.
For preventive purposes during pregnancy, it is recommended to use oxolinic ointment for no more than 2-3 weeks.
Side effects of using oxolinic ointment
When applying nasal ointment, a pregnant woman may experience a transient burning sensation of the nasal mucosa and rhinorrhea (heavy discharge from the nasal mucosa). In rare cases, blue staining of the nasal mucosa is possible.
Oxolinic ointment - analogues
Pregnant women used oxolinic ointment back in Soviet times. This drug with the same name was produced in 1970, but now its trade name is: “Oksolin” nasal ointment 0.25% (or for topical use 0.25% or for external use 3%). Other analogues of oxolinic ointment with a similar active ingredient, including “Tetraxoline” or “Oxonaphthylene” are currently NOT registered in the state register of medicines of the Russian Federation.
But there are other drugs for topical use that also have an antiviral effect, like oxolinic ointment, but are absolutely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for example Viferon gel or Grippferon spray.

I have been a long-time fan of oxolinic ointment. Since childhood, my mother would smear my brother and I’s noses before going to school. By the way, now I’m 30 and I still use oxolinka in the winter. At the same time, you can only count on the fingers of one hand the viral diseases that I have had during this time. I recently discovered oxolinic ointment 3% for myself, with its help I removed a wart for myself, a papilloma for my husband, and I took my brother to the company, where they have a “standard” ailment - a thorn. Everyone is very happy. Such a small, inexpensive tool and so many benefits.

There are two types of oxolinic ointments. I apply one 0.25% of this ointment to the nose of children and myself during the period of viral diseases, in the clinic. And oxolinic ointment 3% cured the spine and got rid of papillomas.

And instead of oxolinic ointment, I have been using Infagel for a long time. Once a doctor prescribed it for the prevention of influenza, it has taken root in my medicine cabinet. I like that it’s cheap and really helps. And instead of Aqualor and Aquamaris, you can rinse your nose with salt water. It turns out cheap and cheerful.

The lack of evidence of effectiveness is mentioned so casually that I didn’t even notice it; in my opinion, this is the main thing that needs to be highlighted in bold, and everything else will no longer matter to thinking mothers. I hope that there will be no such articles about Mezim, Linex, Arbidol and the very funny Oscillococcinum. In general, it would be nice to post a list of such “medicines” on the website with an emphasis on the fact that this is wasted money and an analogue of chalk treatment. And by the way, Viferon and Gripferon are from the same series; there is not a single credible study confirming their effectiveness. They are absolutely useless in the nose, for the flu, for ARVI, and excuse me, in the ass, they are also no good, because... ultimately lead to suppression of one's own immunity.

The common name for this ointment is fuflomycin. There is no point in using either pregnant or non-pregnant women; this is a drug with unproven effectiveness, unknown in the world and used only in the former USSR. With the same success, you can smear your nose with Vasiline, the result will be the same - you will smear the nasal mucosa, which is designed to protect against viruses, i.e. destroy the local immune defense of the nose by replacing it with fat. I’m surprised that such an advanced site publishes articles about such “medicines.”

At the request of our users, we are gradually adding a section “Medicines for pregnant women”. Therefore, we will try to highlight those drugs that are either prescribed by a doctor, but for what they do not really explain, or drugs that are “popular among friends and acquaintances.”
Information about the unproven effectiveness of oxolin is indicated in the article. The article was written so that the expectant mother can decide for herself whether she should use this drug or replace it with safer, similar medications, which are indicated at the very end of the article.
The same Aquamaris is offered for a lot of money, although it is just a saline solution that can be prepared at home for pennies.

Can pregnant women use oxolinic ointment?
When the off-season begins, people try to protect themselves from epidemics of viral diseases by helping their immune system with all available methods. It is much more difficult for a woman expecting a child, because treatment with many medications is prohibited for her.
However, there is a unique, time-tested remedy - oxolinic ointment during pregnancy. It will help protect mother and baby from cold symptoms and the unpleasant consequences of viral diseases. You just need to know about the features of the drug and the subtleties of its use for pregnant women.
What kind of medicine is this?
The drug has a thick consistency and is made in the form of an ointment based on the synthetic active ingredient oxoline (naphthalene-tetron). Depending on its concentration, the dosage form is produced in two forms:
- At a concentration of oxoline of 0.25%, it is used nasally to protect sensitive areas (nasal mucosa, eyelids and others)
- At 3% concentration of the active substance, the ointment is used externally, even if the skin is damaged
A popular topical remedy is used as protection against infection by various types of viruses, including influenza and herpes viruses, and adenoviruses. In pathogens of viral diseases, oxolin suppresses the ability to reproduce.
Doctors believe that pregnant women can include the drug in the arsenal of approved medications. Enveloping the nasal mucosa, the ointment protects the expectant mother’s body from the introduction of viruses, and the fetus from the danger of infection, helping to increase local immunity.
Oxolinic ointment has an important feature - it is not dangerous to use it to protect mucous membranes, since only a small fraction of the substance applied to the surface is found in the systemic bloodstream. The period of excretion of oxoline by the kidneys is equal to a day; it does not linger in the body.
Why is the medicine allowed for pregnant women?
According to experts, the drug is not capable of harming either the expectant mother or the baby developing inside her. However, it is not recommended to treat viral skin diseases with ointment for pregnant women.
Oxolin can be used by women at any stage of pregnancy to prevent infection with cold viruses.
Benefits of oxolinic ointment for pregnant women
- If you follow the rules for using the medication, there are no contraindications. It is allowed both during pregnancy and while breastfeeding
- The product has a simple mechanism of action. Due to the sufficient concentration of the active substance, the ointment is much more effective than other dosage forms on the same basis
- Multilateral action drug. For local protection, the medicine can be used to treat the nasal mucosa, treat the primary symptoms of herpes, souring of the eyes
- The medicinal substance is convenient to use, effective not only for the treatment of infection, but also for its prevention
Thanks to the results of long-term observations, doctors consider oxolinic ointment to be a safe remedy, however, no significant studies have been conducted on its effect on the body of the mother and baby. Therefore, the instructions for the drug indicate that pregnant women should use it with caution. This is a tribute to international standards for the production of pharmaceutical products.
How to use the ointment correctly?
Since during pregnancy a woman’s body works under increased stress, immunity may decrease, which results in weakened protection against viruses and bacteria. The expectant mother should beware of any diseases, and especially in the early stages of pregnancy, because this threatens the formation of the baby’s systems and organs. Therefore, most medications are contraindicated during this period, but oxolinic ointment during pregnancy will become an available protection for the fetus from the threat of maternal illness if treated correctly.
Nasal use of the product
- Before applying the drug, clear the nasal passages of mucus
- Every day (2-3 times a day) the mucous membrane of each nostril is lubricated with ointment, the maximum treatment period is four days.
- Nasal applications are performed carefully to prevent damage to the mucous membrane
- A small part of oxolin is applied with a plastic spatula or a cotton swab
- Before the procedure, you should not put drops in your nose that have a vasoconstrictor effect.
Treating an eye infection
In case of viral infection of the mucous surface of the eye, oxolinic ointment can be placed into the conjunctival sac using a special spatula three times a day. If the procedure is part of complex therapy for an eye disease, the product is applied only at night.
Application for skin
- Oxolinic ointment (3% concentration) is distributed evenly over the entire area of affected skin
- The drug is not rubbed into the skin, but the treated area is covered with a sterile gauze bandage, securing it loosely
- For the treatment of severe forms of disease, oxolin is secured with an occlusive bandage for 24 hours.
The maximum period for external use of the drug is eight weeks. If a woman is prone to allergic reactions, the drug should be used with caution, observing the body's response to oxolin. Moreover, some doctors doubt the effectiveness of the drug, not only for therapeutic but also for preventive purposes.
Nuances of use
A drug with 0.25-0.5 percent of the active substance is suitable for women with a severely weakened body that reacts sharply to other medications. An ointment with a concentration of 1-3% can treat an existing disease (viral) or be used for preventive purposes during the start of an epidemic. But consultation with a doctor is required.
Doctors recommend that pregnant women use ointment as protection against infection before each time they go outside, but especially when visiting public places where many people gather. It is enough to lubricate the nasal passages with a small amount of ointment, rubbing it lightly. After returning home, the remaining unabsorbed substance is washed off with warm (running) water.
The use of oxoline during the first trimester of pregnancy requires the woman to be careful to avoid an allergy to the active substance. In the second trimester, the ointment will not harm the fetus, but will become an additional protective barrier if the mother is overtaken by a viral attack. During the third trimester, when the baby’s body has finally formed, synthetic-based medicine can be used without fear.
If oxolin is treated according to the instructions and in agreement with the doctor, it will not cause any special side effects, but individual intolerance to the chemical component of the drug cannot be excluded. Excessive lubrication of the mucous membrane can cause burning and dryness in the nose; there is an insignificant likelihood of a bluish tint of the mucous membrane appearing. If the ointment is removed, the unpleasant consequences of its use quickly disappear.

Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy: a dummy or a time-tested remedy?
A woman spends a lot of energy carrying a baby, and the immune system weakens during pregnancy so that the female body cannot reject the fetus. All this leads to increased vulnerability of the expectant mother to numerous viral diseases, which can negatively affect the health of the child in the womb. Many modern medications for the prevention of colds and flu are undesirable to take during pregnancy, so therapists prescribe oxolinic ointment, a “Soviet” remedy that has been tested for decades. But is it as effective as we used to think?
Composition and effect of the drug
Oxolinic ointment is a medical product whose active component is the structurally complex chemical compound naphthalene-1,2,3,4-tetron. The more well-known name of this substance - oxolin - gave its name to the popular remedy.
The therapeutic effect of the drug is due to the ability of the active substance to block the binding sites of viral particles with the membrane of healthy skin cells and mucous membranes. As a result, viruses lose activity and, after a while, die altogether.
Oxolin demonstrates high effectiveness against the following pathogens:
- influenza pathogen;
- adenoviruses;
- herpes pathogen;
- pathogens of human papilloma and molluscum contagiosum.
In its pure form, the active component is a whitish powder that dissolves well in liquids and quickly decomposes. That is why the drug is produced only in the form of an ointment, the auxiliary (and binding) substances of which are petroleum jelly and petroleum jelly.
On pharmacy counters you can find two versions of oxolinic ointment, which differ only in the concentration of the active substance:
- 0.25 percent ointment for nasal use;
- 3% ointment for external use.
Is the drug effective?
The medical community has still not reached a consensus on the antiviral effectiveness of oxolinic ointment. If doctors of the “old school” are confident in the benefits of the drug, modern specialists are increasingly expressing doubts about the need to prescribe Oksolin, considering it a dummy.
For the first time, the probable ineffectiveness of oxolinic ointment was announced back in 1998 by Doctor of Medical Sciences Leonid Strachunsky, who argued that any popular drugs supposedly preventing infectious diseases of a viral nature do not have any real therapeutic effect.
The effectiveness of such popular drugs as oxolinic ointment, Arbidol, and numerous immunomodulators has not been proven in randomized comparative trials.
L. S. Strachunsky, Doctor of Medical Sciences
A similar position regarding Oxolin and immunomodulatory drugs is currently taken by the widely known pediatrician E. O. Komarovsky.
But there is also the exact opposite point of view, which is held by many doctors and scientists. According to their observations, the drug acts with average effectiveness, reducing the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza during epidemics.
Thus, there really are no randomized clinical trials (involving a control group that receives a placebo) proving the antiviral activity of oxolinic ointment. But therapists who prescribe this drug believe that its effectiveness has been confirmed by more than 40 years of practice and positive reviews from grateful patients.
Video: Doctor Komarovsky about oxolinic ointment
Is Oksolin allowed for expectant mothers, including in the early stages?
An attentive expectant mother, when studying the medical manual for oxolinic ointment, may be alerted to several controversial issues regarding the use of this antiviral medication during pregnancy.
Table: controversial points regarding the use of oxolinic ointment
More than forty years of observations have not found any negative effects when pregnant women use Oxolin. That is why doctors, without any fear, prescribe this medication during epidemics of colds and flu, including in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Viral attacks pose a greater danger to a child’s health than Oxolin.
Indications for use
It is important to understand that medications with different concentrations of the active ingredient have completely different indications. Thus, 3 percent oxolinic ointment is intended for the treatment of the following skin diseases caused by viral infections:
- various types of lichen;
- herpes simplex;
- Dühring's dermatitis;
- warts that are caused by the human papilloma virus;
- molluscum contagiosum.
Today, Oksolin is rarely prescribed for the treatment of lichen, as manufacturers have developed more advanced antilichen drugs. If, for various reasons, they are not available, oxolinic ointment will help cope with this viral skin lesion.
Oxolin at a concentration of 0.25% is used for the treatment and prevention of diseases and conditions of viral origin such as:
- runny nose (with a cold, ARVI);
- diseases of the eye mucosa (conjunctivitis, keratitis);
- herpetic stomatitis;
- prevention of influenza and respiratory viral infections.
Important! Oxolin is not able to help prevent infections caused by bacteria (sore throat, pneumonia). If the expectant mother is forced to contact patients who have been diagnosed with these diseases, she needs to take care of her health, for example, by using a gauze bandage.
Contraindications and possible harmful effects
Oxolinic ointment is a fairly safe medicine. This is confirmed, among other things, by a short list of restrictions on its use. Thus, the medication is prohibited for use by pregnant women who are found to have:
- tendency to allergic reactions;
- intolerance to oxoline or other components of the drug.
Oxolinic ointment can increase the manifestations of allergies. This is especially dangerous at the beginning of pregnancy, since the severity of the reaction cannot be predicted, and to relieve symptoms you will have to resort to strong antihistamines, which can harm the fetus.
When using Oksolin, undesirable consequences are observed very rarely. The main adverse reactions include:
- slight burning and discomfort at the site of application;
- lacrimation;
- dermatitis;
- significant discharge of mucous fluid from the nose;
- slight coloration of the skin in a blue tint.
Most side effects do not pose a danger to the woman and child and do not require discontinuation of the drug.
Important! The use of a medication with a high concentration of the active substance for application to the nasal mucosa can cause or intensify undesirable effects and provoke acute allergic reactions.
Instructions for use
Before using oxolinic ointment, especially in the early stages of pregnancy, it is necessary to consult with your doctor, who will determine the duration, frequency of use and amount of the drug required for application to the skin or mucous membranes.
Table: features of the drug during pregnancy
- It is necessary to clean the affected area from crusts, lubricating them with sea buckthorn oil;
- you can rinse your mouth with a decoction of calendula or chamomile;
- A 0.25 percent ointment is applied to the affected area 2-4 times a day.
- First, the nose should be rinsed with saline solutions or vasoconstrictor drops approved by the doctor should be instilled;
- 0.25 percent ointment is applied last so as not to wash off the fatty base;
- apply 2-3 times a day.
- Lubricate the nasal passages with 0.25 percent ointment 2-3 times a day using cotton swabs;
- The product must be washed off every time after returning home from the street to remove possible viral particles.
Oxolinic ointment is used to treat skin diseases and acute respiratory infections of viral origin. However, the main area of use of Oxolin at present is the prevention of influenza and colds.
How can I replace oxolinic ointment?
If a pregnant woman is found to be intolerant to the components of oxolinic ointment, the attending physician may prescribe another antiviral drug intended for the treatment and prevention of diseases caused by viruses.
Table: medications for herpes and respiratory viral infections prescribed for pregnant women
- Ointment;
- gel;
- rectal suppositories.
- Prevention and treatment of ARVI, influenza;
- herpetic infections.
- Prevention and therapy of ARVI, influenza;
- Chronical bronchitis;
- pneumonia;
- rotavirus infections.
- Hepatitis in acute or chronic form;
- prevention and therapy of ARVI and influenza.
- Severe liver and kidney diseases;
- heart failure;
- epilepsy;
- thyroid diseases;
- intolerance to components.
- Antibodies to human interferon gamma;
- antibodies to histamine;
- antibodies to CD4.
- Prevention and treatment of influenza;
- herpetic infections;
- acute intestinal infections;
- viral meningitis
- Intolerance to the components of the medication;
- severe forms of allergies.
- Muscovy duck liver extract;
- sugar;
- lactose.
- Flu;
- ARVI.
- Lactose intolerance;
- intolerance to the components of the drug.

Reviews from women
Throughout the first trimester, I smeared my nose when visiting public places and going to work. I think it was only thanks to the ointment that I didn’t get sick in the spring, because almost everyone got sick at work.
I smeared it because I had direct contact with a sick child. And my friend used it (her one-year-old son) throughout her pregnancy. The pharmacy told me to apply it carefully - if anything happens, stop immediately and rinse it off.
In general, it is recommended for the prevention of colds in B. But back in the year I had some strange reaction to it: I applied it in the evening, and a runny nose began, which got worse the next day, and I lay with this runny nose for two days, although others there were no symptoms. But the runny nose was so bad that my head hurt, all my sinuses were so clogged, and I was sneezing constantly... So I’m thinking: could it be an allergy to oxolinic ointment? But I didn’t dare use it anymore...
Only this ointment saved me! At 4–5 months. During pregnancy, everyone at work was sick with the flu, I swabbed several times a day, and I was ALONE in the whole team who didn’t get sick!
I'm pregnant, a little over 7 months already. One fine day, my gums started to hurt terribly; before that, they had been bleeding for a month. When I saw what was there, I was horrified! These were 3 pustules with a diameter of 2–3 millimeters! The pain was terrible, it was very difficult to eat, I couldn’t sleep at all. <…> Oxolinic ointment should be applied at least 2-3 times a day. I did this procedure 3 times a day: in the morning, after lunch and before bed. In between (sometimes) I rinsed my mouth with Rotokan (chamomile infusion) or water mixed with soda. I cured stomatitis with oxolinic ointment in just 3 days!
Video: prevention of viral infections during pregnancy
Only the expectant mother should decide whether or not to use oxolinic ointment during pregnancy. Until now, even medical workers have not come to a consensus about the effectiveness of this drug. And yet, the almost complete absence of undesirable consequences and contraindications, the good tolerability of the active component speaks in favor of an antiviral agent. In addition, it is much easier to prevent the flu or a cold than to heroically fight it later.

It is possible and necessary. This is how I protected myself during all the epidemics. Did you wear masks to the clinic and residential complex for special vigilance?
I injected nazaval plus, it’s called... it’s powder with garlic
What kind of ointment is this, everyone writes about it, but I myself don’t know?
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy. virus prevention agents.
I used it too, but very rarely. It is better to avoid collisions with sick people. I wore a mask whenever possible.
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy.
That year, when I went to take it, I bought it. I read the instructions, and there is a contraindication there
The pediatrician told me that oxolinic ointment is only for calming oneself, it is of little use
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
The instructions say not and my gynecologist said not
I used it for up to 12 weeks, during which time I didn’t get sick.
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
I used oxolinka or dripped fluferron into my nose - working with a large number of people, and applying it to the clinic is sacred
I always apply Viferon ointment to both myself and my children (Oxolinka only works from 3 years old)
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
It has been proven that it is not very effective, but there are more side effects, it is generally outdated, I used geneferon throughout my pregnancy, and sprayed it in the air. Breathe and sniff, the entire pregnancy was in the winter, I did not get sick
Well, the effectiveness of the ointment is questionable, so, more for self-soothing. You better ventilate more often and dab your nose with saline solution; in a salty environment it will be more difficult for viruses to get hold of.
Thank you girls. I went to apply it, otherwise my sister would come and she had a runny nose and I was afraid of catching it.
oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
This is exactly what you need)) By the way, one day, when I was 8 weeks pregnant, I didn’t feel very well, as if my temperature had risen - I applied oxolinka and felt better))
it is possible and necessary... even if it is written that it is undesirable... there is less harm from it than if you get sick
Oxolinic ointment for breastfeeding
it is used topically, you can. You can also drop gripferon into your and your child’s nose, according to the instructions for yourself, and for the child, 1 drop in each nostril once a day for 3 days. Let dad wear a mask. Our dad was sick, both our daughter and I are healthy)
Good luck! do not be ill!
Oxolinic ointment
Now everything has contraindications written on it during pregnancy. Law ))
It’s even written on the chamomile.
But. I read an article on the Internet about ointment. That she's clueless. And it doesn't cure. On the contrary. Contains Vasilin. It just covers the nose with a film and all sorts of bad stuff sticks to it.
I applied it, and there is also Viferon ointment there and you can apply it to infants.
Can. I smear, and smear with the first one, if there are contagious ones nearby.
Oxolinic ointment
G said not to leave the house at all without applying oil now. The flu is going around... it lasts for 4 hours. I don’t even know about the uselessness, my husband got sick, he didn’t evict me, because he gives me injections every morning, but I constantly apply oxolinic ointment and so on I hold on! Although I usually get sick immediately if someone coughs nearby
I bought it, and then I read that during pregnancy “with caution”
Yes, I used it, but now I switched to Viferon ointment.
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
I swabbed her nose at work throughout her pregnancy, and never got sick! (although there was only one office for every 30 employees), so I think that the risk of getting sick is higher than the risk of using ointment.
She doesn't help. Viruses can also enter the body through the mouth. This is more suitable for sleeping infants.
Oxolinic ointment.
It seems like you need to smear it in the nose and not around it)) and renew it every two hours, remove the old layer with a cotton swab and apply a new one.
and my mother tells me then treat your mouth ..)) she is a doctor and is sure that oxolinka is not effective
I applied it last winter. But Komarovsky says that it does not save at all)
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
It’s possible, the gynecologist told me to smear it so as not to get sick.
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
So it’s possible, it won’t affect the child. But from the point of view of prevention against viruses, it not only does not protect, but, on the contrary, prevents the body from defending itself. Any vasiline base retains dust - a distributor of airborne infections, and oxolin generally irritates the mucous membranes, drying them out, promotes the formation of crusts, bursting of blood vessels, providing an ideal environment for the development of the virus. If you want to protect yourself from the virus, wear a mask and rinse your nose frequently with saline solutions. A wet nose will best protect you from viruses
I smeared it when I was pregnant, I smeared it on my child when we went to the hospital, and I continue to smear it on myself, because in general I need to be more careful with my nose. And we haven’t gotten sick even once
It’s better to buy a spray with sea water, any) and turn your nose often. ENT told me that this ointment and others like it are complete nonsense 🤷🏻♀️
Treatment of colds during pregnancy
I'm 30 weeks pregnant. Of course, I always try to do something for prevention. I drank a lot of fruit drinks, brewed rose hips, did inhalations with derinat (an excellent remedy for the prevention of acute respiratory infections and flu!) through a nebulizer, if I couldn’t buy a spray, I gargled with chlorophyllipt as soon as I felt that it was starting to tickle.
The same cold has not spared me a terrible runny nose, although without an elevated temperature: I wash my nose with Aquamaris + warm it with a blue lamp, warm tea with honey (or raspberries) before bed, in a couple of days the runny nose went away, although not completely, but it became easier to breathe, and at the same time They gave my daughter prophylaxis) the article is useful, Thank you!
In general, during pregnancy it’s better not to get sick, but as practice shows, not everything goes the way we want, our loved one got sick, the doctors banned the pills, they decided to use folk methods, gargling, aloe, and the like, then they just bought a barrier reef and forgot about illnesses
Oxolinic ointment is harmless when
Well, according to the instructions it doesn’t seem safe. Instead of oxolinka, I took an asterisk with an inhaler - everything saved me perfectly.
Viferon was smeared with geoem. It’s definitely possible
And I use it too!!
Oksolin 0.25% (Oxolinic ointment)
Colds during pregnancy
Actual topic. For example, during pregnancy, and it just happens during the cold season, I sprayed morenasal immunospray in my nose for prevention. It perfectly protects the body from viruses and supports local immunity
Helpful information. To bookmarks. It seems like I know everything, but when I was sick during my last pregnancy, I couldn’t remember anything.
Oxolinic ointment.
Yes, everyone is smeared with oxolinka and pregnant women can. it's not harmful. on the contrary, it protects very well against viruses. I smeared it on myself all the time.
Oxolinic ointment
In such cases, I used oxolinic ointment and drank acylococcinnum. My doctor said that in the middle of pregnancy, only this remedy can be used for prevention, even once a day. My sister and I were saved like that😊 even after going to the clinic I took it in the evening before bed. In any case, it’s better than being treated with all sorts of nonsense and getting sick 😳 And put folk-fire-onions around the house. It stinks, but it helps a lot. Kills all germs 😊 My mother did this when I was a child. If I made it on time, then there was no infirmary in the apartment😂
This is the only way I could save myself. And let my husband wear a mask and change them more often
I smeared myself with Viferonova when I remembered)
Oxolinic ointment
A doctor friend advised me (and she did it herself) to smear oxolinka near my nose. To avoid catching viruses. The main thing is not to smear too much and deeply throughout the mucous membrane))
And they even smear it on babies’ noses for the same purpose.
I used oxolinic ointment during pregnancy, nothing bad happened, ttt) when I got home, “wash off” the ointment, I also sometimes washed it with a saline solution. Have an easy pregnancy, don’t get sick! ))
Viferon can be said to have the same effect as oxolinka) Rinse your nose. At one time I wore a mask, but in December I still got sick, now I wear ointment)))

Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
During the period of rise and maximum development of an outbreak of influenza and ARVI (for 25 days) or in close contact with a patient, as a preventative measure during pregnancy, it is necessary to lubricate the nasal membrane every day 2-3 times a day. When treating viral rhinitis, the nasal mucosa is lubricated 2-3 times a day for 3-4 days.
A woman during pregnancy is highly susceptible to viruses entering her body, since during this period her immunity is significantly reduced. This is especially true in winter and the off-season period. And very often it is difficult to recover from the disease. Moreover, even a slight malaise can cause serious developmental disorders of the fetus, including malformations. To avoid problems, it is better to take care of timely prevention of ARVI and influenza.
One of the effective means that protects the body from viruses and their spread is oxolinic ointment. It is widely used for preventive purposes due to its low cost. Many expectant mothers have a question: can pregnant women use oxolinic ointment? After all, the instructions for the drug do not say anything about how safe it is to use during pregnancy. As you know, many medications are prohibited during this period.
Oxolinic ointment is one of the few drugs that can be used during pregnancy, as it does not harm the health of the expectant mother or the baby. It will protect the body from viral infection. Oxolinic ointment is time-tested, as it has been used since 1970.
Effect of the drug
In order to understand whether oxolinic ointment can be used during pregnancy, let’s look at its action in more detail. The active substance of the drug oxolin, which protects the body from the penetration of the virus. If it gets on the mucous membrane, which is lubricated with the drug, the pathogen is not able to move further. The substance seems to paralyze him. If the disease has already begun, the ointment will help reduce the impact of the virus on the body and stop the spread of infection. Oxolin fights well against influenza virus, herpes, and adenovirus.
Often, when deciding whether it is advisable to use oxolinic ointment during pregnancy, specialists are guided by the principle of lower risk. If you can increase immunity and protect the body without using synthetic substances, but get by exclusively with the gifts of nature (lemon, honey, herbal teas, ginger, etc.), then it is better not to use the drug unless absolutely necessary. When dangerous periods occur (off-season, peak incidence), the expectant mother, while in public places, can use some neutral agent, for example, Vaseline. It cannot paralyze viruses, but it will delay them, preventing them from reaching the mucous membrane. To reduce the risk of infection, rinse your nose thoroughly with Vaseline upon returning home.
If a woman’s lifestyle or work specifics are such that she needs to come into contact with people who are potential carriers of viruses, then it is better to use oxolinic ointment. No negative consequences have been found from its use. There will be much more harm from antibacterial agents and other medications if it is necessary to treat the disease.
Release form and methods of application
Oxolin is produced in the form of an ointment. Today, the following types of this drug are distinguished:
- Ointment for application to the nasal mucosa – 0.25 and 0.5%.
- Ointment for external use - 1 and 3%.
Both concentrations of oxolinic ointment differ in the concentration of the active substance in it, as well as in the area of application. Ointment 0.25 and 0.5% is intended for lubricating the mucous membrane of the nasal passages or placing in the conjunctival sac. Ointment 1 and 3% is used externally on the skin. When this drug is used externally, the active substance enters the body in a very small amount, and it is excreted by the kidneys within a day. Therefore, the drug is not toxic.
When choosing oxolinic ointment, you need to remember that it is unacceptable to use the ointment for external use on the mucous membranes of the nose, but only on the skin. As a result of applying 1 or 3% of the drug to the mucous membranes, severe local irritation of the treated area will occur and a very high dose of the active substance will penetrate into the blood. There is no point in applying 0.25 and 0.5% ointment to the skin, since such a low concentration of oxolin will not be effective enough.
Indications for use
Oxolinic ointment 0.25 and 0.5% is used for the prevention of viral diseases, as well as the treatment of such common pathological conditions as:
- runny nose (rhinitis);
- burning, dryness and inflammation of the nasal mucosa;
- conjunctivitis;
- keratitis;
- to prevent the possibility of infection with influenza and ARVI.
Oxolinic ointment 1 and 3% is used for external use to eliminate symptoms of the following diseases:
- herpes simplex;
- psoriasis (when combined with other drugs in complex treatment);
- papillomas, warts;
- molluscum contagiosum;
- lichen scaly, weeping, shingles;
- eczema.
Instructions for using oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
Oxolinic ointment during pregnancy can be used to prevent acute respiratory viral infections, influenza and other similar diseases, as well as as a method of treating viral rhinitis. Treatment of viral skin diseases during pregnancy is not recommended, since today there are more effective remedies for this. Therefore, expectant mothers can exclusively use 0.25% and 0.5% ointment for nasal use. To prevent various viral infections, ointment is placed in both nasal passages when planning to go outside. Upon returning home, the product should be washed out of the nose with warm water. The ointment can be placed in the nasal passages 2-3 times a day. The drug can be used continuously for no more than 25 days.
Oxolinka during pregnancy can also be used to treat a runny nose. For this purpose, the product is placed in the nasal passages 2-3 times a day, the course of treatment is 3-4 days. To do this, you need to squeeze out a little ointment from the tube (a small pea, the diameter of which is 4 - 5 mm) and distribute it evenly, with rotating movements, over the mucous membrane of one nasal passage. The manipulation is repeated similarly for the second nasal passage. The product is applied carefully so as not to damage the mucous membrane. Its layer is small so as not to interfere with the woman’s natural breathing process.
The optimal tool for applying oxolinic ointment is an ear cotton swab or a plastic spatula, with which the drug can be placed deep enough, while avoiding the possibility of injuring the nasal mucosa. Before using this medicine, it is not recommended to use vasoconstrictor drops to treat the nasal passages.
Benefits of oxolinic ointment during pregnancy
So, you now know whether oxolinic ointment can be used during pregnancy, but, of course, after first consulting a doctor. What are the advantages of this medicine?
- There are almost no contraindications for use both during pregnancy and lactation.
- Simple mechanism of action of the drug.
- A fairly effective remedy in the fight against various viruses.
- It can be used for both prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
- Has a local effect. Once lodged in the nose, viruses are unable to penetrate further into the body.
How effective is the drug?
In medicine, there is no clear answer to the question of how effective oxolinic ointment is. “Old-school” specialists widely use the drug because they are confident in its benefits, but modern doctors doubt the need for its use. The first are confident that the drug helps prevent viral diseases, thereby reducing the incidence of influenza and acute respiratory diseases during epidemics. The latter claim that oxolinic ointment does not have a real therapeutic effect.
It is imperative to take into account that oxolin is absolutely ineffective in preventing infections caused by bacteria (pnemonia, sore throat, etc.). If a situation arises that a pregnant woman is forced to come into contact with people suffering from these diseases, you need to take care of your health, for example, use a gauze bandage.
Contraindications and side effects
Oksolin during pregnancy has a minimum of contraindications for use. The only reason why the drug cannot be used is individual intolerance to the active substance, manifested in the form of acute allergies. This condition can be dangerous not only for the health of the expectant mother, but also for her baby.
Women who used oxolinic ointment during pregnancy speak of it as a harmless and effective drug. But some note that when applying the drug to the nasal mucosa, they experienced a quickly passing, short-term burning sensation. Sometimes the ointment can turn the skin blue if it gets on your skin, but this can all be easily washed off with water.
Analogues of the drug
If oxolinic ointment is not suitable for you for one reason or another, you can use drugs with a similar effect. Oxonaphthalene and tetraxoline also act, but their active ingredient is the same oxoline, so they are not used in case of allergies.
There are other drugs with a similar effect, but with a different composition. To prevent viral diseases if you are intolerant to oxolinic ointment, you can use Viferon, which is available in the form of ointment, gel, nasal drops and rectal suppositories. Viferon differs from oxolin in its mechanism of action. It does not prevent the penetration of the virus, but helps to activate the body's defenses so that the body can fight it.
In addition, women during pregnancy need to adhere to a number of preventive measures to prevent infection with viral diseases, which include:
- the use of preventive medications that have been approved by the doctor;
- thorough and frequent hand washing;
- Clear your nose of mucus several times a day;
- If possible, limit your stay in places with maximum crowds of people;
- stop contact with sick people.
Thus, to the question whether oxolin can be taken during pregnancy, the answer is obvious. The ointment based on it is safe and effective. But before you start using it, you should definitely consult with your doctor and take into account all his advice regarding the application of the product. Then you don’t have to worry about the possible consequences for your health and the development of your baby.
