Medicine for ear pain in adults

Medicine for ear pain: which ones are better to choose?

Quite often, during colds and viral diseases, the ears begin to hurt. This happens because a simple runny nose has become a complication, or the person simply has a cold.

Table of contents:

Painful sensations in the ears should be given close attention, since an untreated infection can lead to complications.

Symptoms and causes of ear pain

Symptoms and causes of ear pain

Ear pain is compared by many people to toothache, as it is unbearable. Especially when shooting occurs.

At this moment, a person generally experiences not only painful sensations, but may also be discouraged and immobilized for several seconds.

The main causes of ear pain (and the choice of treatment depends on this) include:

  1. Damage to the ear canal that can occur if a person scratches the ear with a sharp object. This injury occurs especially often after swimming, when water gets into the ears and causes discomfort.
  2. Inflammation, which can be an independent disease or a developed complication after the flu or cold.
  3. Entry of foreign objects.
  4. Pinched nerve.
  5. Cold auditory nerve.
  6. Traffic jams.

Of course, most often ear pain occurs after a flu or cold, especially when treatment was not carried out properly.

In order to consult a doctor in time for specialized help, you need to know all the symptoms of otitis media, one of the most common ear diseases:

  • Significant hearing loss. At a certain moment, a person realizes that he is starting to not hear something and he has to turn up the volume on the TV. Or asking people to speak up.
  • Improved hearing if a person changes position.
  • Severe pain in the ear that does not subside even for a second.
  • Increased body temperature.
  • A headache that is so severe that it causes nausea.
  • Vomiting, which begins when the pain becomes unbearable, and with it nausea.
  • Feeling of stuffiness in the ear. Some people compare this feeling to flying on an airplane.

If at least one of the symptoms appears, you should immediately consult a doctor for help, since ear pain caused by infection can provoke the development of complications, the most common of which is partial hearing loss. And it will be difficult to restore it later.

Treatment for ear pain

Almost all doctors unanimously say that under no circumstances should you self-medicate, especially if you experience ear pain. This cannot be done because the ear is very fragile, and taking any incorrectly selected drug can worsen hearing and aggravate the problem.

Typically, treatment for ear pain consists of the following:

  1. Prescribing special medications that relieve pain and swelling and reduce inflammation. Antibiotics are most often used, especially if a child has ear pain.
  2. Prescribing compresses that have a warming and analgesic effect. But if the pain intensifies while applying the compress, it must be removed immediately
  3. Physiotherapeutic procedures are prescribed

Sometimes otitis media is so advanced that no medication helps. In this case, it is advisable to perform an operation during which a shunt will be placed.

Characteristics of antibiotics

Antibiotics are not prescribed in all cases of ear pain. They are used only when the pain is caused by severe inflammation of the middle or outer ear. In this case, prescribing antibiotics is the only way to get rid of the problem quickly and without consequences.

But, it is true, many doctors treat antibiotics with caution and distrust, since there is one peculiarity during their use. More than half of people stop treatment after the first two days of taking the pills, as they begin to feel much better. And this is very dangerous because such improper use of the drug leads to addiction, or rather, bacteria develop resistance to it. And next time we will have to treat them with stronger medications.

Among the most common antibiotics that doctors prescribe for ear pain are Azithromycin, Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxacin.

Separately, it is necessary to say about Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin. Azithromycin has a more expensive analogue, Sumamed. And this is what doctors prescribe. Azithromycin is no different from Sumamed. Their main difference is the price. And if the price of Azithromycin, depending on the region, will vary from 150 to 200 rubles, then Sumamed costs from 500 to 600 rubles. The difference is significant, but the effect is the same.

More information about ear pain can be found in the video.

As for Ciprofloxacin, it is best to use it in the form of injections, since this administration of the drug ensures its relative safety, and besides, the main active ingredient begins to act much faster.

Only a doctor can select an antibiotic after testing the microflora. But often there is no time for this, and simply broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed.

Ear drops

Drops are an excellent remedy for ear pain, as well as for relieving inflammation. However, you should know that not a single ear drop (even antibiotics) penetrates the eardrum, and therefore, at the same time, you need to take medications orally, that is, in the form of tablets or suspensions.

The most famous ear drops include:

  • Anauran. This is one of those remedies that can not only treat, but also relieve inflammation. And besides, the drug has virtually no side effects.
  • Otipax. These drops are allowed to be used by both pregnant women and children. They have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. But, unfortunately, due to the fact that the drops contain lidocaine, not everyone is able to tolerate them
  • Otofa. This is a very strong antibiotic, which is strictly prohibited for use by both pregnant women and women breastfeeding. Otofa is one of those drugs that have a fairly wide spectrum of action, moreover, they relieve pain well
  • Cipropharm. The main component of the drops is ciprofloxacin, which has an excellent effect on most infectious agents. But, due to its strength, it is prohibited for pregnant women and children under 14 years of age.

There are many medications that can be used to quickly and easily get rid of ear pain. Most often, each person, together with the attending physician, selects the option that is suitable in terms of means and effect.

I once got a cold in my ear after going to the pool: water also got into it. At night I woke up from wild pain, just howling loudly. The doctor prescribed Otipax drops, and they helped me a lot in my treatment.

How to treat ear pain

Pain in the ear often indicates the presence of inflammatory processes in the hearing organ. Discomfortable sensations can be a consequence of diseases of other organs and internal systems, direct inflammation of the main parts of the hearing system, as well as the influence of exogenous factors. Ignoring the problem only aggravates the health condition, which leads to the development of hearing loss, autophony and other pathologies.

Ear pain, what to treat? The principles of therapy are determined directly by the type of pathology. Depending on the type of disease, pain of a different nature may appear - cutting, aching, pulsating, pressing or shooting. Diagnosis of a specific disease is made possible by concomitant symptoms, in particular the presence of discharge from the auricle, hearing loss, inflammation of the lymph nodes, etc.

Etiology

Discomfort in the ears can be caused not only by specific and general infections, but also by external factors. In particular, inflammatory processes in the main parts of the auditory analyzer often occur against the background of a sharp change in pressure. Diving under water, air travel, and parachute jumping can damage the eardrum and mucous membranes of the middle ear.

How to treat ear pain in adults? Treatment of ear pathology should begin with an accurate determination of the cause of its occurrence. It may be associated with infection, mechanical injuries, pathologies of the ENT organs, etc.

If your ear constantly hurts, what is the reason? The main causes of pain in the hearing organ include:

Drugs can be chosen only after undergoing an appropriate examination. Illiterate therapy can cause serious diseases such as phlebitis, meningitis, sepsis.

Principles of therapy

To relieve inflammatory processes and, accordingly, discomfort in the hearing organ, pharmacotherapy is used. If your ear hurts, what to treat? Undesirable manifestations of ENT pathologies can be eliminated using the following types of medications:

  • analgesics – suppress pain sensitivity in affected tissues;
  • antipyretics – eliminate hyperthermia, which significantly facilitates the course of the disease;
  • vasoconstrictors - reduce swelling in the mucous membranes, which leads to the restoration of the drainage function of the auditory canal;
  • antihistamines – eliminate hyperemia, itching and inflammation in areas of inflammation;
  • antibiotics – eliminate pathogenic microbes that provoke the development of ear pathology;
  • anti-inflammatory drugs - inhibit the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, thereby accelerating the regeneration of the mucous epithelium;
  • antimycotics – inhibit the development of fungal flora in the affected tissues.

Conservative therapy will be effective only in the treatment of unadvanced pathologies. That is why you should consult a doctor when the first signs of the disease appear.

Antibacterial drugs

What pills for ear pain will be effective? Discomfort in the ears is caused by inflammation in the tissues. To stop purulent processes, experts recommend the use of antibacterial drugs. However, it should be taken into account that they will be effective only if bacteria have become the causative agents of infection and the development of pathology.

You should not interrupt the course of antimicrobial therapy without the advice of a specialist. In the event of a relapse, the prescribed medications will be ineffective, which will be associated with the development of stable immunity by bacteria to the components of the drug.

Only an otolaryngologist can select a suitable drug after conducting a special microflora analysis. In advanced cases, inflammatory processes can be stopped with broad-spectrum medications. What medicine for ear pain in an adult will be the most effective?

  • Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic antibacterial agent that has a pronounced bactericidal effect. Destroys gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The acid-resistant components of the drug are quickly absorbed into the intestines and block the synthesis of microbial cell walls;
  • Augmentin is a bacteriolytic drug that helps eliminate most anaerobic and aerobic pathogens. The antibiotic is active against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase;
  • "Ceftriaxone" is an antibacterial medicine for the ears that has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is administered intramuscularly, which ensures the rapid elimination of anaerobic and aerobic microbes in the affected tissues;
  • Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum drug that can be used to treat mixed infections. Helps destroy most gram-positive bacteria, such as Proteus, Klebsiella, influenza bacillus, etc.;
  • "Cefuroxime" is a semi-synthetic antibiotic that is resistant to microbial b-lactamases. Inhibits the development of pathogens in areas of inflammation for 2-3 days.

Lymphadenitis (enlarged parotid lymph nodes) is often a consequence of the development of bacterial flora in the ear cavity. If this symptom occurs, you should seek help from an otolaryngologist.

Antibacterial drugs for ear treatment in adults are prescribed only in courses of 7-12 days. Systematic use of medications helps eliminate catarrhal and purulent processes in the hearing organ already on the 3-4th day of therapy. However, experts warn that if you feel better and local manifestations of pathology disappear, you cannot stop taking antibiotics.

Ear drops

What helps with ear pain? As a rule, treatment of ENT diseases is not complete without the use of topical medications. The most effective of them include ear drops, which, based on their principle of action, are divided into three groups:

  1. anti-inflammatory – contain analgesic components, which allows you to relieve not only inflammation, but also pain;
  2. antibacterial – destroy pathogens of infection and inflammatory processes in tissues;
  3. combined – eliminate inflammation and microbial flora, which is due to the presence of an antibiotic and a non-steroidal component of antiphlogistic action in the composition of the drug.

Direct indications for the use of drops are otitis media, catarrhal inflammation in the ear cavity, cerumen plugs and severe pain. How to treat the ear? As part of conservative therapy for adults, the following types of pharmaceuticals can be used:

  • "Otinum" is a drug with wound healing and disinfectant effects. Suppresses the synthesis of prostaglandins and softens sulfur, which helps eliminate inflammatory reactions in affected tissues;
  • "Otipax" is an antiseptic with local anesthetic and antiphlogistic action. Can be used to eliminate symptoms of the disease due to barotrauma, otitis media, eustacheitis, etc.;
  • “Candibiotic” is an antiallergic agent that has pronounced antifungal and antibacterial properties. It disrupts the synthesis of ergosterol, which prevents the formation of the walls of fungus and some bacteria;
  • "Polydex" - drops with antiphlogistic and anti-edematous action. Normalize the patency of the auditory canal, which leads to the restoration of its ventilation and drainage functions;
  • "Otirelax" is a medicine for ear pain, which additionally has antipyretic and analgesic properties. The active components of the product reduce the permeability of capillaries, which leads to the elimination of edema.

Ear drops can only be used until the eardrum is perforated. Instillation of drugs in case of perforation leads to irritation of the mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity, which only aggravates the course of the disease.

What helps with ear pain? According to many otolaryngologists, local drugs are better than systemic drugs in eliminating swelling in the mucous membranes. It is known that with the development of catarrhal processes in the organ of hearing, the mucous epithelium can increase 4-5 times. This leads to stenosis of the eustachian tube and internal auditory canals. Their blockage leads to the accumulation of exudate in the ear cavity, which leads to the development of conductive hearing loss.

Analgesics

With the development of acute purulent otitis, the affected tissues melt, which leads to cutting unbearable pain. How to treat a sore ear in such a situation? To stop the manifestations of ear pathology, you can use the following types of analgesics:

  • “Saridon” is a combined remedy for ear pain that helps eliminate heat, inflammation and pain. Inhibits the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, which leads to rapid suppression of pathological processes in the lesions;
  • “Nuforen” is a non-steroidal antiphlogistic agent that eliminates pain by blocking the synthesis of active substances that cause inflammation;
  • Paracetamol is an antipyretic pain reliever for ear pain. Quickly absorbed into the blood and reduces the sensitivity of pain receptors;
  • "Lidocaine" is a medicinal solution that has a membrane-stabilizing effect. Prevents the conduction of impulses to affected tissues, which leads to the elimination of pain reactions;
  • Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory analgesic whose components interfere with the synthesis of cyclooxygenase. Eliminates hyperthermia and promotes healing of damaged epithelium.

Many analgesic drugs have a destructive effect on the liver and kidneys. For this reason, experts do not recommend abusing analgesics to relieve pain.

Homeopathic remedies

How to treat ear pain? Antibacterial drugs are used to treat ear pathologies only in advanced cases. This group of medications not only creates an additional burden on the detoxification organs, but also leads to dysbiosis. At the initial stages of development of inflammatory processes in the auditory analyzer, homeopathic remedies can be used.

Heavily diluted drugs, which contain a negligible amount of pathogenic agents, contribute to the development of specific immunity. How to treat ears? You can eliminate the main cause of pain using the following medications:

  • “Aconite” – eliminates hyperthermia, shooting pains and nasal congestion;
  • “Chamomilla” – relieves swelling, which helps to evacuate fluid from the ear cavity and, accordingly, eliminate ear congestion;
  • "Mercurius" - eliminates the manifestations of chronic inflammation, accompanied by the release of purulent exudate;
  • "Gepar sulfur" - anesthetizes and relieves catarrhal processes in the mucous epithelium;
  • "Verbascum" - eliminates itching, scaly plaque in the external auditory canal and pain in the ear cavity.

Before treating ear pain with the medications described above, you should consult a specialist. As a rule, drug therapy involves the use of several groups of medications at once. This helps eliminate both the clinical manifestations of the disease and the causative agents of inflammation in the hearing organ.

    If your ear hurts, what should you put in it: medicines or folk remedies?

    Every person has experienced pain in the ear more than once. Sometimes this happens when there is no medical help nearby, and the pain does not allow you to sleep and you need to get rid of it. Only a doctor can make a correct diagnosis by examining the ear with a special instrument, so you should go to the clinic as soon as possible, but you need to know the basic medications that help in difficult times.

    Diseases that cause ear pain

    Ears hurt for the following reasons:

    • otitis media and external;
    • tumors in the ear lumen;
    • injured ear;
    • mastoiditis.

    Sometimes the ear hurts as a result of a disease of some organ. Pain is often caused by a tumor in the larynx, a cold, inflammation of the throat, dental disease, or neuritis of the facial nerve. Exacerbation of pain occurs in windy weather and cold, so you need to wear a hat so as not to catch a cold in your ear and head.

    External and otitis media

    This is an inflammation of the tissues of the ear canal outside. It is often caused by the contact of bacterial pathogens on the surface, and children up to adolescence often suffer from it. This occurs due to the underdeveloped structure of the ear canal, which becomes protected in an adult. The causative agents are streptococci, fungal growths, and staphylococci.

    Inflammation of the middle ear is characterized by acute pain, formation and leakage of pus, blood, deterioration and loss of hearing; these symptoms are reversible phenomena. Only a doctor should make a diagnosis and choose permanent treatment.

    Mastoiditis

    The disease refers to pathological changes in the area of the temporal bone due to prolonged inflammation of the middle meatus and the formation of purulent contents. Refers to the complicated course of inflammation of the middle ear and is characterized by significant pain. Diagnostics consists of computer diagnostics of the temple area.

    Trauma, ear tumors and other causes

    Ear pain depends on the severity and location of the injury. A rupture or deformation occurs when there is pressure from a foreign object in the ear or an impact.

    Ear tumors are rare; to identify them, MRI of the temporal region is prescribed. If a patient has problems with his teeth, he may feel like his ears are hurting. It is necessary to undergo an examination at a dental clinic and have an x-ray taken.

    Pain occurs due to osteochondrosis of the spine in the cervical region; nerve endings can be pinched by protruding vertebral discs, causing pain. If your throat hurts and your temperature rises, then discomfort in the ear may be the result of a separate inflammation of the ear canal or may be the result of a sore throat or pharyngitis.

    Treatment of ear diseases

    Pain is often treated with drops. They can be buried if:

    • the ear canal is clogged with a significant amount of sulfur, which can be corrected by softening the plug with a special solution;
    • there is otitis, which requires treatment and removal of sulfur without forced mechanical intervention, with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs containing an analgesic component;
    • the ear canal is clogged with overgrown fungal spores, requiring treatment with appropriate drops to remove the fungus
    • The patient has aerootitis disease, which is treated with ephedrine or naphthyzine.

    Rules for ear drops

    In order for the medicine to be beneficial and to reach the complex ear canal as intended, you need to know how to instill drops correctly:

    • before instillation, the external passage is cleared of sulfur using cotton wool sticks;
    • before use, the drops are heated to the temperature of the human body; they cannot be heated to a higher temperature or used cold; the bottle warms up best in the hand for some time;
    • after laying the patient on his side, the ear is pulled back and upward;
    • release 2-4 drops from the pipette, then release the ear and lightly press on the hard growth in front of the ear;
    • do not raise your head for a while to allow droplets to drain deep into the ear canal.

    Anti-pain drops

    Drops are used to relieve pain:

    Otipax is used as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic in case of otitis media. If there is damage to the eardrum, then Otipax drops cannot be used. The first reduction in pain occurs after a few minutes, the attack completely stops after 30 minutes. Otipax contains lidocaine and phenazone, which actively relieve pain. There are practically no side effects; a mild rash and itching may appear.

    Otinum drops relieve the patient of an overgrown fungus in the ear canal. The medicine treats microbes and inflammation, but can be used for no more than 10 days. If an overdose of the drug occurs, then as a side effect you can get tinnitus, headache, increased and frequent breathing, as well as nausea and vomiting.

    Aurisan ear drops are recognized as popular, inexpensive and active. The medicine antisepticizes the surface of the ear canal, simultaneously ridding the patient of harmful microorganisms, fungi and bacteria. Used for the treatment of acute otitis media with fungal complications. What adds to its popularity is that it is allowed to use drops during pregnancy, the main condition being the use of a precisely calculated dosage.

    If your ears hurt, then otofa drops are an effective remedy. They contain rifampicin, which actively inhibits staphylococcal and streptococcal infections; the product can be used for no more than three days.

    Drops for the treatment of otitis media

    With otitis media, the ear hurts a lot. What to do at home? An incorrectly selected drug for instillation can aggravate the consequences, and the disease will end with a decrease in the ability to hear or a complete absence of hearing. The choice of therapeutic methods and drip drug depends on the severity of the inflammation and the presence of a rupture or crack in the eardrum. The following types of drops are used to treat otitis media:

    • medications with antibiotics and hormones of the glucocorticosteroid group consisting of sofradex, candibiotic, anauran;
    • drugs with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - otipax, otinum;
    • products containing antibiotics – Normax, Tsipromed.

    Sofradex contains:

    • dexamethasone, which actively eliminates allergic itching and inflammatory processes;
    • antibiotic neomycin and gramicidin, which prevents bacterial pathogens from multiplying and kills gram-positive organisms.

    Used for acute and chronic otitis, but not recommended for the treatment of fungus and viruses.

    Candibiotics reduce inflammation and pain, inhibit bacteria and fungi. The composition of the drug includes:

    • antibacterial substance chloramphenicol with a bacteriostatic effect;
    • clotrimazole, which actively destroys fungi;
    • beclomethasone dipropionate to reduce allergic manifestations and inflammation;
    • lidocaine for pain relief.

    The drug is not used in children under 6 years of age or in cases of damage to the eardrum.

    Normax ear drops relieve pain caused by inflammation; they contain the antibiotic norfloxacin of the fluoroquinolone group. Used to treat internal and external inflammation of the ear, infectious lesions of the Eustachian tube, and in acute cases of the disease. In addition, drops are used as prophylaxis in surgery and for traumatic ear injuries.

    Anauran ear drops are used for various pathologies, chronic and acute inflammation, otitis media and inferior, inflammation with perforation and serous congestion of a non-purulent nature.

    Folk remedies for instilling ears

    Drops at home

    Sometimes instilling a drop of camphor oil, heated to human body temperature, into the sore ear helps. For the next recipe you need to prepare the medicine. Make a small hole in the shape of a hole in the peeled onion and place sugar in it (as much as will fit). Then place in a heated oven until softened. The resulting mixture is instilled 2-3 drops three times a day for a week.

    For ear pain, warm nut or almond oil to body temperature and drip. The ear area is insulated with a scarf or handkerchief for a long time. For the next remedy, take propolis tincture from the pharmacy and honey in a 1:1 ratio and drop it into the ear; the remedy helps well against purulent inflammation.

    You can reduce painful colic with the help of Japanese Sophora. Take 100 g of the plant and infuse it in half a liter of vodka or alcohol for about a month. The vessel should not allow light to pass through, but should be infused in a dark place. Instill three drops three times a day for a week.

    A decoction obtained from laurel helps well. To do this, 5 leaves in a glass of boiling water are steamed in a water bath for a couple of hours. After this, leave it for 45 minutes and squeeze it out. In addition to instilling 8 drops into the ear, it is recommended to take another 3 spoons orally. For 5 days, drip three times.

    Steam baths and turundas

    To make turundas, gauze flagella are twisted, moistened in a medicine and inserted into the ear canal. This safe remedy is quite effective and popular.

    Mix sunflower oil and propolis tincture. The tincture is prepared from 15 g of the substance and 100 g of alcohol and infused for 10 days in a dark place. If you need it urgently, take propolis tincture from the pharmacy. To prepare the solution, take 100 g of propolis vodka and 40 g of oil and mix. A tampon is soaked in the solution and placed in the ear for a day. In total, the procedure is performed from 5 to 12 times.

    To carry out the following procedure, first cleanse the ear canal of wax by instilling hydrogen peroxide. After instilling it in the ear, you need to lie down until the bubbling in the ear is complete. Then turn your head over to the other side and wipe off the leaking mass with a napkin. Turunda is dipped in boric alcohol and placed in the ear canal. Do this 3 times a day, the duration of treatment is up to 5 days.

    A steam bath is made from yarrow or nettle herbs. Brew a generous handful of herbs in a bucket or large saucepan, then leave for about 5 minutes under the lid. After this, tilt the head with the affected ear towards the broth and hold it, covered with a towel, for about 15 minutes. It is not recommended to keep it any longer. You cannot treat your ear over scalding steam. After finishing, drip onion juice into the ear canal.

    Compresses for ear pain

    In folk recipes, sore ears are treated with warm compresses. Warm touch relieves pain, reduces swelling and reduces inflammation. If the disease is accompanied by a rise in temperature, then you cannot apply a compress.

    A simple recipe for a compress made from homemade products consists of vegetable oil and alcohol or vodka in a 1:1 ratio. The mixture is heated to body temperature and a napkin is soaked and placed around the auricle. Place parchment or film on top, then a layer of cotton wool, and secure everything with a scarf.

    The recipe for a compress from bread crust is made in the same way, only instead of a napkin soaked in alcohol, they put the crust cut off from the entire loaf. It is heated over steam on both sides and applied to the ear. After such a compress, the pain goes away within minutes, and the procedure should be done 3-4 times until complete healing.

    An onion compress made from a baked product relieves inflammation well. You need to take a small onion and bake it in ash. Spread a little butter on a piece of natural fabric, then put on the onion, taking a piece that is the size of your ear. Wrap the fabric and place it at the beginning of the ear canal. The compress should act for a minute, then it is taken out, and I cover my head with a warm scarf or handkerchief. It is not advisable to go outside; it is better to repeat the procedure after 8–10 hours.

    Folk remedies have no contraindications, it is only important to remember that they act slowly, so it is recommended to use them as an additional remedy to the main drug treatment, especially if the disease occurs with complications.

    How to treat ear pain in adults?

    Pain is the body’s signal about the emergence of health problems. It can be provoked by an inflammatory process that requires medical intervention. Ignoring pain in the ears will lead to serious consequences, for example, complete or partial hearing loss.

    To relieve ear pain, treatment is required, knowledge of the probable causes of pain in adults, and how to treat it. Pain in the ear area may indicate a number of ENT pathologies. To determine the nature of the pain and the correct prescription of treatment, it is necessary to understand the structure of the ear. It is divided into three parts: outer, middle, inner. The outer ear consists of: the eardrum, the pinna, and the auditory canal. The middle ear includes the Eustachian tube, mastoid process, and tympanic cavity. It is located in the temporal bone. A complex formation that is responsible for coordination and sound recognition - the inner ear.

    Non-medical causes of pain

    The cause of ear pain is not necessarily a disease. For example, pain syndrome can be provoked by:

    • Walking in windy weather (exposure to wind causes a bruise in the ear);
    • Untimely, improper hygiene;
    • Water getting inside;
    • A sharp jump in blood pressure;
    • Foreign body, insect in the ear;
    • Trauma, bruised ear.

    You cannot remove an object from your ears yourself, so as not to damage the eardrum - an urgent visit to a specialist is required.

    Possible diseases

    Among the diseases that cause pain in the ears are:

    1. Otitis is an inflammation characterized by acute pain in the ears. There are internal, middle, external. Internal otitis is a consequence of inflammation of the middle ear. The main symptoms include dizziness. It can hurt outside and inside. Otitis externa appears due to microtrauma or weakened immunity. A boil appears in the ear canal. Its causative agent is Staphylococcus aureus. Temperature, severe itching, and congestion appear. The most common is otitis media (acute, chronic). The disease affects the middle ear area. May develop simultaneously with a runny nose. The acute course of the disease is characterized by severe pain and fever. Chronic otitis media develops gradually. Hearing worsens when infection or purulent discharge gets into the bone tissue. To cure otitis media, immediate medical intervention is required;
    2. Mastoiditis is an inflammation of the small temporal region. The disease is characterized by the accumulation of pus and the occurrence of ear pain. The disease occurs as a complication of otitis media and is rarely an independent disease. There are several types: typical (with redness of the skin), atypical (with mild symptoms, leading to bone destruction);
    3. Perichondritis is an infectious disease. It occurs due to damage to the ear cartilage tissue by bacteria. More often, the disease occurs after suffering from influenza, pneumonia, or as a complication of the ears. A dense swelling appears, in the center of which a purulent cavity and pain appear. Independent attempts to cure the disease by opening the cavity contribute to the appearance of a non-healing fistula;
    4. Lymphadenitis is an enlargement of the lymph nodes located behind the auricle. The temperature rises, the head constantly hurts.

    Diseases that mimic ear pain include:

    • Neuralgia, neuritis of the cervical nerve plexus;
    • Dental diseases;
    • Inflammatory, ulcerative processes of the pharynx, larynx, jaw, tonsils.

    Diagnosis of the disease

    To determine the cause of pain in the ears of an adult patient, specialists use the following methods:

    1. Visual examination, otoscopy;
    2. Taking anamnesis;
    3. Tympanometry;
    4. CT, MRI (spread of inflammation to the brain is excluded);
    5. Electronystagmography;
    6. Acoustic reflectometry, audiometry.

    The pathology can be cured by performing an otoscopy and taking an anamnesis, if the patient has ordinary external otitis, without complications. Other examination methods are used when treatment of a more complex disease is required.

    What treatment does the doctor usually prescribe?

    Treatment of ear pain involves the selection of a medicine by a specialist depending on the patient’s condition, as well as the detected disease. During treatment, age, individual susceptibility to drugs, and the presence of other diseases must be taken into account. Classic treatment includes the following:

    • Antibiotics (injections, ear drops);
    • Painkillers, anesthetics;
    • Alcohol compresses to the area of the sore ear;
    • Warming up the ear cavity (if there is no high temperature);
    • Inserting tampons with ointments into the ear canal;
    • Washing with antiseptic drugs.

    Treatment should only be carried out by a specialist to avoid rupture of the eardrum. In some cases, surgery may be required to cure the patient.

    Reduce pain before visiting a doctor

    Seeing a doctor or starting professional treatment is not always possible right away. It is important to know how to help a person if pain occurs in the ear. You need to take a pain reliever. It is often forgotten that there are painkillers that have, among other things, an anti-inflammatory effect. However, this only helps for a while. You should not delay visiting a specialist. If the pain is accompanied by a runny nose, it is necessary to instill drops into the nose with the effect of constricting blood vessels. The medicine helps improve ventilation in the tympanic cavity. It is important to know that drugs can be instilled only when an accurate diagnosis has been established. For the ears, different medicines are used for different clinical pictures. Often patients who try to treat their ears on their own use the wrong remedy. For example, if a sore ear has a perforated membrane, drops can be instilled, which specialists use when there is no membrane.

    The use of drops in case of injury is not recommended. You should take painkillers and visit a doctor as soon as possible. If you experience acute pain in the ear, using heat in the first couple of hours helps relieve pain. Warming up the ear late without a specialist's prescription can be harmful.

    It is contraindicated to warm the sore ear with compresses or heating pads if there is a dull, throbbing pain syndrome.

    The presence of pulsation indicates compression of small blood vessels by swelling (increased blood supply). In this case, heating causes the infection to spread to surrounding tissues. After an accurate diagnosis, you can treat using traditional medicine methods.

    Folk remedies

    Ear diseases can often be treated with bay leaf drops. It is necessary to boil 5-6 leaves in a small amount of water. Leave for 2-3 hours. Take 2 tablespoons of solution orally. Instill no more than 10 drops. It is necessary to treat the sore ear for 3 days. It is known that bay decoction has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps relieve suppuration.

    Almond drops are used if there is tinnitus or acute pain. It is necessary to moisten a cotton pad and insert it into the sore ear. You can put a few drops inside. Mint, wormwood, and glycerin will help treat a sore ear. If you have an ear infection during a cold, use a cotton swab moistened with mint infusion, wormwood, and glycerin. A moistened tampon will help relieve pain. You need to keep it in your ear for 2-3 hours until it dries completely.

    To avoid complications

    The presence of pain in the ear indicates the need for precautions:

    • Wear a hat when going outside;
    • Avoid drafts;
    • Do not try to perform deep cleaning of pus or other secretions;
    • Do not indiscriminately drop medicine into the ears in order to determine effective drops;
    • You cannot warm your ears uncontrollably;
    • Remove pus accumulated in the ear;
    • Do not inject alcohol into the ear canal.

    You can avoid problems and complications by trusting a specialist, excluding attempts to cure the disease yourself.

    Effective ear drops for children and adults

    A local remedy for relieving ear pain and congestion in adults or children is ear drops. They are indicated for acute or chronic otitis, but a doctor must still prescribe a specific remedy. Not every drop can be beneficial, although they are considered a safe medicine. They can also cure suppuration, infections, inflammations and even injuries. Depending on the problem, drops with a specific effect are selected. These may be drugs from the group of antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic or combination drugs.

    What are ear drops

    This is a means for local therapy by instilling a solution of the drug into the ear canal. They can be prescribed for otitis media, which is manifested by pain and congestion in the ears, itching, tissue inflammation, the appearance of pus, and sometimes an increase in body temperature. If these symptoms occur, you should contact an otolaryngologist, who will confirm the diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

    Advantages

    Drops are a very convenient form of release, especially for the treatment of otitis media in different parts of the ear cavity. The medicine has the following advantages:

    • does not have a systemic effect on the body;
    • act directly on the affected area of the ear tissue;
    • quickly relieve inflammation and other unpleasant symptoms of the disease or at least reduce their severity;
    • have very few contraindications and do not cause side effects;
    • have an affordable price;
    • sold without a doctor's prescription;
    • economically used due to small dosages.

    Classification is based on differences in composition, pharmacological action and indications. Based on the number of drugs in the composition, they are divided into combination and single drugs. The first contain several components. Monopreparations include only one drug substance. Regarding the principle of operation, the following main groups are distinguished:

    1. Anti-inflammatory, reducing the manifestations of inflammation and having analgesic and drying effects. This includes non-steroidal drugs and drugs containing the glucocorticoid hormone. It is prescribed with caution, because it is a powerful anti-inflammatory substance and is used strictly according to indications. Contraindicated for use for a long time.
    2. With antimicrobial action. They have an antibacterial effect.
    3. Antiseptic. Drugs with antimicrobial action, used in the presence of purulent inflammation. This includes hydrogen peroxide, drugs based on miramistin, boric and furatsilin alcohol.
    4. Antifungal. Helps with fungal and inflammatory infections.
    5. Vasoconstrictor drops. Prescribed for a feeling of congestion in the ears, but no pain.

    Anti-inflammatory

    Drops in the ear for inflammation are used in different cases. More often they are prescribed as part of complex therapy with other drugs for acute otitis media or edematous acute otitis. Inflammation that occurs as a result of a sharp increase or decrease in atmospheric pressure, which causes damage to the auditory canal, is also an indication. These ear drops are prescribed for ear pain to reduce it. These include:

    In case of prolonged illness or complications, the doctor prescribes combined anti-inflammatory or non-steroidal drugs. The latter include lidocaine, which has an analgesic effect. Hormonal drugs include:

    Antibacterial

    Good antibiotic ear drops contain broad-spectrum antimicrobial substances, for example, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, rifampicin. Such drugs have an antibacterial effect, so they are indicated for diseases caused by bacteria entering the ear canal. This often happens with a cold, the complication of which is otitis media internal, media or external. The disease is an inflammation accompanied by the discharge of pus from the ear canal.

    Drops in the ears for otitis media are almost always prescribed. They help stop infection, prevent pus from forming and possible damage to the eardrum. The list of the most effective drops with strong antibiotics includes:

    Single drugs

    These are special products with one active ingredient in their composition. They are indicated to eliminate the source of infection. Along with this, they have complex analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, but they cannot be used for perforation of the eardrum. Among these, the drugs Otinum and Otipax stand out. They are able to reduce the synthesis of prostaglandins that accompany the pathogenic process. For this reason, Otipax or Otinum are the first to be used. In addition, they have a gentle effect, so they are prescribed to pregnant and lactating women.

    Combined

    Drops from this category have a wide antibacterial spectrum of action. Although they are not prescribed for every disease, they provide good pain relief and help destroy viral infections. For catarrhal otitis media or inflammation of the external ear, the drug Anauran is popular. Although suspicion of perforation of the eardrum may be an indication for discontinuation of such a drug. Other prominent representatives of this group are Sofradex and Garazon drops.

    With antiseptics

    In the treatment and prevention of purulent otitis, antiseptic drops are prescribed. They are often used before and after ear surgery. A prominent representative of this group is Miramistin, which belongs to the group of cations. This drug has an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect. The following antiseptics are similar in principle of action:

    • Okomistin;
    • alcohol solution of boric or furacylic acid;
    • Sangviritrin;
    • Candibiotic.

    Antifungal

    In the antiseptic group, there are several drugs with an antifungal component in their composition. Such remedies cope with the treatment of fungal and inflammatory diseases. These include:

    Drops for children

    In childhood, only a few of each group of drugs listed can be used. Drops for ear pain from infancy - Otipax. Otinum can only be used for children over one year of age. To rid a child of ear plugs, it is recommended to use Aqua-Maris Oto (from 1 year) and A-cerumen (from 2.5 years). Already from birth it is allowed to instill Remo-vax in infants. In the treatment of otitis, the following medications are also used from a certain age:

    • contain antibiotics - Tsipromed (from 15), Nomrax (from 12), Otofa (from 5);
    • anti-inflammatory – Sofradex (with 7), Garazon and Anauran (with 6), Polydex (with 5);
    • antiseptic - furacilin alcohol (with 6), Okomistin (with 1).

    Drops for ear pain during pregnancy

    Medicines should be especially safe during pregnancy. Otitis media during this period can be caused by hormonal imbalance and reduced immunity. It must be treated with medications with minimal risk to the child. The following are considered dangerous during pregnancy:

    Sofradex contains a hormonal substance, so it is also not safe. If the ears hurt, and otitis media is not complicated by perforation of the eardrum, then Otipax drops are used for treatment. This is one of the few products that is considered safe for pregnant women. In case of purulent form of otitis, Otipax should not be used under any circumstances. In case of perforation of the membrane, antibacterial therapy with Biseptol and Amoxicillin drops is prescribed. Otitis externa is treated with drugs containing hydrocortisone, which is not toxic to the fetus.

    Effective drugs for treating inflammation

    For ear inflammation of any nature, local remedies are more effective. Moreover, they are easy to use. Among antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drugs, several of the most effective ones can be identified. These are the following means:

    Orlavax

    Today it is very difficult to buy this product in an online store or order it in a regular pharmacy. Orlavax is considered an analogue of Otipax, so it has almost the same indications. The dosage is also the same. The medicine itself belongs to the combination category and is based on lidocaine and phenazone. The medicine has several actions:

    • local anesthetic;
    • anti-inflammatory;
    • antiseptic;
    • disinfectant.

    Flavaco

    Ear drops for colds or otitis from the combined group. The drug contains antibiotics that complement each other, a local anesthetic and a steroid substance. The latter has anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects. Along with them, the anesthetic helps reduce pain. You need to drip 4-5 drops into each ear up to 3 times throughout the day. Repeat the procedure throughout the week. Indications for use of Flavaco are:

    • rehabilitation after middle ear surgery;
    • acute or chronic external otitis media;
    • Otitis media without perforation of the tympanic membrane.

    Panotile

    This is another analogue of Otipax. Panotile is the trade name of this drug in pharmacy catalogs abroad. It is popular not only in Europe, but throughout the world. The difference between the medicine is the absence of age restrictions. Panotile is allowed even for the youngest patients. Mild inflammation is treated by instilling 2 drops into each ear. For adults, the dosage should not exceed 4. Indications for the use of Panotile are rehabilitation after surgery and the prevention of inflammatory diseases.

    Otinum

    The main active ingredient of Otinum is choline salicylate. The drug belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It has analgesic and inflammation-reducing effects. Indications for use are:

    • softening the wax in the ear canal before washing or cleaning;
    • acute non-perforative otitis media;
    • myringitis;
    • otitis externa

    To treat inflammatory processes in the middle or outer ear, adults need to instill 3-4 drops up to 4 times daily. The course of treatment is about 2 weeks. A burning sensation may be felt upon injection. Otinum should not be used for perforated otitis media. In the future, this can lead to hearing loss. Children are not recommended to use Otinum, as there is no data on the effect of the drug on them.

    Otipax

    The active components of Otipax are the anesthetic lidocaine and the anti-inflammatory substance phenazone. Due to its safety, this drug is approved for children from the first day of life and pregnant women. Contraindication is traumatic or infectious damage to the eardrum or an allergy to the components in the composition. Indications are barotraumatic, moderate or complicated after influenza otitis. The drug is instilled 3-4 drops up to 3 times a day.

    How to put drops in your ears

    When using ear drops for otitis or other inflammation, you must first warm them in a water bath or hold them in a clasped hand for a couple of minutes. This is necessary to warm the drug to body temperature, which will help avoid vestibular reactions. You need to drip the medicine according to the following instructions:

    • lie on your side with your affected ear facing up;
    • pull up, out and back the upper pole of the auricle;
    • instill the medicine in the amount indicated in the instructions; it is better to administer it with a pipette;
    • press on the tragus, massage so that the substance can be evenly distributed;
    • lie down for 10 minutes, plug the ear canal with a cotton swab, which will absorb the remaining liquid.

    How to choose

    The medicine is selected depending on the characteristics of the treatment and the cause of the disease. An equally important factor here is how the patient will use the drug and how correctly he will do it. It is necessary to select drops according to their indications and the cause of inflammation. If it is caused by a bacterial infection, then a drug with antibiotics is required, and if it is caused by a fungus, then antifungals. You should not prescribe your own medicine. It is better to leave this to the doctor, who, depending on the symptoms, will be able to prescribe the correct medications.

    The cost of drugs is determined by the manufacturer, pharmacological action and place of purchase. The cheapest include boric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution. Inexpensive drugs are Ciprofloxacin, Auridexan, Norfloxacin. Sofradex, Othiorelax, Otinum drops are available to the general population. Their cost is slightly higher compared to others.
