The article will detail the main causes, symptoms and principles of treatment of the disease.
Causes of formation of nasal polyps
Nasal polyps are benign growths
The exact reasons for the development of the disease are unknown, but there are a huge number of predisposing factors:
- Prolonged inflammation in the nasal cavity.
- Large bacterial contamination of the nasal mucosa.
- An infectious disease accompanied by decreased immunity: mononucleosis, herpes virus infection;
- Allergy.
As well as the causes of the disease, the pathogenesis causes a lot of controversy among otorhinolaryngologists from all over the world. It has been proven that the following factors play an important role in the process of polyp formation:
- chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa
- dysfunction of glycoproteins of the main mucosal membrane
- vasodilation – excessive relaxation of the walls of the blood vessels in the nose
- constant separation of mucous membrane and maintenance of inflammation
- fibrin accumulation, connective tissue proliferation
- disruption of the body's immune response
Nasal polyps are divided into two types: infectious and allergic. In case of an infectious process, green or yellow purulent discharge from the nose, periodic rise in temperature, and headaches are observed. With allergic inflammation, the discharge is colorless, more like water.
Main signs of polyps
Most often, polyps occur as a complication of chronic rhinitis
The main symptom that forces the patient to see a doctor is complete nasal congestion. A feeling of lack of air appears at the very beginning of the disease, when polyps are just beginning to form and the person can breathe freely through the nose.
The symptom occurs as a result of blockage of the upper part of the nose by neoplasms. The contact of sensitive receptors with incoming air is also reduced. As the polyps grow, the uniform outflow of mucus from the nose is disrupted, the secretion stagnates and begins to run through the nasopharynx. A person feels constant discomfort in the back of the throat, constantly tries to swallow mucus, and during an infectious process feels an unpleasant odor in the nose and mouth. Congestion at night is also a concern; the patient wakes up with a headache, tired, with a dry and sore throat.
A “valve symptom” is observed: when you inhale, air passes freely, when you exhale, you feel congestion.
Gradually the nose stops breathing. In rare cases, sneezing is observed. The sense of smell changes, up to complete loss. Thick mucous discharge is observed from the nose; with inflammation in the sinuses and the addition of bacterial flora, they change to thick green or yellow, with an unpleasant odor.
The patient’s general well-being is disrupted, lethargy, drowsiness, heaviness in the head and headaches appear, performance decreases, irritability and insomnia appear. If the patient delays seeing a doctor, the polyps grow and begin to protrude beyond the nasal cavity, they can also grow into the sinuses, destroying bone tissue, and grow into the middle ear cavity. In some cases, it may develop into cancer.

Diagnostics
The diagnosis is made by an otolaryngologist by visual examination using a nasal speculum. Anterior rhinoscopy allows you to see gray, slightly shiny formations.
They do not fuse with the nasal mucosa; they can be moved to the side using a probe. As a rule, polyps are painless, soft, and there is no bleeding surface.
Most often, there are two or more polyps in the nose.
In the vast majority of cases, neoplasms appear from the cells of the ethmoid labyrinth. To assess the extent of the process, magnetic resonance and computed tomography are performed. The methods make it possible to most accurately determine the location of polyps and determine the scale of the upcoming surgical intervention.
Conservative treatment
Treatment depends on stage and cause
Conservative treatment requires effort on the part of the patient and the doctor. It is necessary to prepare yourself for a long and complete treatment.
For polyps of allergic origin, local steroids have a lasting positive effect:
These drugs act only locally, there is no general systemic effect on the body, so they can be used for many years. According to ongoing clinical trials, five years of daily use of Nasonex spray was not addictive and did not have a significant effect on the nasal mucosa.
Polyp removal procedure
During the period of exacerbation of seasonal allergies, antihistamines are also used: Zyrtec, Zodak, Cetrin, Claritin. The tablets are taken at night for 7-14 days, until symptoms disappear completely.
Infectious nasal polyposis requires the prescription of powerful antibacterial drugs: Amoxiclav, Clarithromycin, Levofloxacin.
The choice of antibiotic will be based on the sensitivity of the bacteria to the drug, for which a nasal swab is prescribed:
- Amoxiclav (Panklav, Rapiclav) 875/125 tablet 2 times a day for 7 days.
- Clarithromycin (Fromilid, Clarbakt) 0.5 1 TB 2 times a day a week.
- Levofloxacin (Glevo, Leflobact) 0.5 per TB 2 times a day for 7 days.
Antileukotriene drugs are used: Acolat 20 mg 2 times a day. Immunomodulators are also used: Erespal 80 mg, 1 TB 2 times a day. To improve the outflow of mucus and thin the secretions, mucolytic drugs are used: Mucaltin, Ambroxol, ACC.
Surgery
Surgical intervention is widely used, although its effectiveness leaves much to be desired. Often polyps grow back and require repeated surgical treatment. Polypous growths are either removed with a hook under local anesthesia in the clinic, or full excision of the tumors is carried out with a scalpel, shaver, or laser.
But after the operation, synechia (fusion of the mucous membrane), adhesions, atrophy of the mucous membrane, and loss of smell often occur. After the intervention, antibiotics, vitamins, and hemostatic drugs must be prescribed. A week after surgical excision, steroids are administered into the nose.
Traditional recipes and tips
Thuja oil is used as an adjuvant in the treatment of polyposis
Often, nasal polyps disappear in people who change their place of residence: a change in climate and constant irritating allergens leads to complete or partial recovery of patients.
Moving to the sea is the most effective; sea salty air helps to relieve inflammation, normalize mucociliary clearance, and restore airway patency.
Traditional medicine recipes:
- Thuja oil in the nose, 3 drops 3-4 times a day for 2 weeks, then a break for 2 weeks and the course is repeated 3-4 times. This remedy removes inflammation well and relieves swelling from the nose, but the oil will not destroy polyps.
- Many healers suggest treating polyps with honey, onions, and golden mustache - but such treatment is fraught with serious consequences. Constant irritation of the mucous membrane of polyps will lead to their bleeding and degeneration of the epithelium into cancer. It can also cause aggressive growth of polyps and destruction of the bones of the nose and sinuses.
Nasal polyps are not a harmless disease, as many people believe. There are cases where patients woke up in the middle of the night from breaking divergent nasal bones. Of course, a person’s appearance also changes.
Therefore, it is important to immediately consult a specialist if you have problems with nasal breathing. Remember: preventing the disease and stopping the disease in the early stages is much more effective than trying to cure a chronic process.

Anatomy of the nose
- lateral
- internal
- top
- lower
The most complex structure is the lateral wall, on which the upper, middle and lower nasal turbinates are located. It is formed by the nasal bones, the upper jaw, the lacrimal bone, the ethmoid bone, the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone, the inferior nasal concha (an independent bone) and the vertical plate of the palatine bone.
- The maxillary sinus is located in the upper jaw
- The frontal sinus is located in the frontal bone
- Ethmoid labyrinth in the ethmoid bone
- Sphenoid sinus in the main (sphenoid) bone
This entire complex system performs a number of vital functions.
- Prevents hypothermia. Warms cold air before it enters the lungs.
- Humidifies and filters the air from dust, allergens and microorganisms. It traps these particles on hairs and mucous membranes, neutralizes them and prevents them from entering the respiratory tract.
- Participates in the formation of the voice, playing the role of a resonator.
- Provides odor discrimination.
But all these functions of the nose would not be possible without the special mucous membrane that lines the nasal cavity. On top it is covered with pseudostratified epithelium. Below is loose connective tissue, beneath it is a layer of glands and perichondrium (the top layer of cartilage).
Causes of nasal polyps
- frequent colds and infectious diseases accompanied by a runny nose
- chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses - sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoiditis)
- allergic rhinitis caused by inhalation of house and library dust, plant pollen, fungal spores, animal hair, particles of household chemicals, chromium compounds
- severe curvature of the nasal septum, causing breathing problems and proliferation of the mucous membrane
- hereditary tendency to form polyps
- pathological reaction of the immune system
A number of diseases can affect the occurrence of polyps: asthma, cystic fibrosis, aspirin intolerance, nasal mastocytosis, Young's syndrome.
- Antrochoanal - most often arise from the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus. Located on one side. More common in children.
- Ethmoidal - develop from the mucous membrane lining the ethmoidal labyrinth. They occur on both sides of the nasal septum. It affects people in adulthood.
Based on the size of the polyp and the changes it causes, polyps are divided into three stages:
- First stage - polyps cover only a small part of the nasal space
- The second stage - the connective tissue grows so much that it blocks a significant part of the lumen of the nasal cavity.
- The third stage - polyps completely block the respiratory tract.
Symptoms of nasal polyps
- Prolonged difficulty breathing through the nose, feeling of nasal congestion. This is caused by the fact that the overgrown mucous membrane partially or completely blocks the lumen of the nasal passage.
Treatment of nasal polyps
Indications for surgical removal of polyps are:
- frequent attacks of bronchial asthma
- complete nasal congestion
- bloody or foul-smelling nasal discharge
- severely deviated nasal septum
- inflammation of the paranasal sinuses
- snore
- disturbances of smell and taste
Preparation for surgery necessarily begins with a complete examination of the patient. This is necessary in order to determine the state of health and identify possible contraindications. You need to tell your doctor:
- About what medications the person is taking (for example, anti-inflammatory birth control pills)
- About the presence of chronic diseases
- About problems with the cardiovascular system
- About cases of allergies to medications and other substances
To determine the structural features of the nose, diagnose inflammation in the sinuses, and identify a deviated nasal septum, radiography or computed tomography is performed.
Medication preparation for surgery:
- 10 days before the procedure, Ketotifen is prescribed to eliminate allergies.
- 3 days before surgery, daily administration of Dexamethasone solution is prescribed to prevent inflammation, allergic reactions and swelling.
- On the eve of the operation, sleeping pills and a cleansing enema are usually prescribed.
- A few hours before surgery, a 2% solution of Clemastine (an antiallergic and sedative drug) is administered.
- An hour before the procedure, an injection of diphenhydramine (3-5 ml of 1% solution intramuscularly) and atropine sulfate (subcutaneously 1 ml of 0.1% solution) is given; they have an analgesic and sedative effect.

Answers to frequently asked questions
What is the effectiveness of treating polyps with folk remedies?
At the same time, traditional medicine has not yet fully studied the problem of the occurrence of polyps and cannot guarantee that after treatment with medications or surgery, polyps will not reappear.
Treatment of nasal polyps with folk remedies
The stem and flowers of the fresh string are crushed. Then pour boiling water at the rate of 1 tbsp. l. strings in 200 ml of water and boil for 10 minutes over medium heat. The resulting broth is cooled and filtered. Using a pipette, instill 2-3 drops into each nasal passage, 2 times a day. The course of treatment lasts 20 days.
You need to take dry anise and grind it. Pour 100 ml of alcohol over the herb and let it brew for 8 days in the refrigerator. Shake the tincture thoroughly before use. Then dilute with boiled water at room temperature in a ratio of 1:3. The resulting composition must be instilled 3 times a day, 10 drops into each nostril. Continue the course for 15 days. If the polyps do not go away, take a break for 2 days and continue treatment.
To prepare the decoction you need to take 2 tbsp. spoons of dry crushed horsetail and pour 250 ml of boiling water. Cover with a lid and let it brew for half an hour, then strain. The decoction must be inhaled alternately through each nostril 10 times a day. A new portion is prepared daily.
Take dry St. John's wort powder and mix with butter in a ratio of 1:4. Steam the mixture for 7-10 minutes. Add celandine juice to the resulting mass, at the rate of 1 drop of juice per 1 teaspoon of a mixture of St. John's wort and oil. Drip 2 drops 4-5 times a day. Course of treatment days.
Ointments for the nose
To prepare this medicine you need to take 15 grams. homemade propolis, 10 gr. Vaseline and 25 gr. butter. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until a homogeneous consistency is obtained. Then cotton swabs are soaked in this ointment and placed in both nostrils. The procedure must be done overnight. The course of treatment lasts days. The ointment must be stored in the refrigerator.
Take fresh but thickened honey. Dip a cotton swab into it and anoint problem areas in the nose. Perform the procedure 3 times a day for days. Usually, before the end of the course, the polyps resolve.
You can make a mixture of: wild rosemary oil - 20%, St. John's wort oil - 20%, sea buckthorn oil - 40%, propolis tincture - 15%, honey -5%. Cotton flagella are impregnated with this composition and polyps are lubricated. The procedure must be done 5 times a day. The course lasts a day.
Nasal inhalations
Take a piece of solid propolis and put it in a metal bowl. Heat over medium heat until smoke appears with a characteristic odor. Remove the dishes from the heat and inhale the propolis smoke through your nose. Be careful! The procedure can lead to internal burns of the respiratory tract.
You need to take 2 tbsp. spoons of crushed chamomile and celandine. Pour boiling water and put on low heat. After the broth boils, remove from heat and carefully inhale the steam. It is advisable to do the procedure 2 times a day for days. Then take a break for 5 days and repeat the treatment for another 10 days.
Using celandine to treat nasal polyps
To prepare the drops, you need to take fresh celandine roots and flowers. Rinse them thoroughly with running water. Then grind in a blender or meat grinder. Squeeze the resulting mass through cheesecloth, expressing the juice into a clean glass container. Then let it brew for 5 days in a cool, dark place. After this, the drops are ready for use. Using a dropper, place 2-3 drops into each nostril daily, 3 times a day. The duration of the course is 10 days.
The juice from the freshly picked stem is also used as drops. Instill 1-2 drops of pure juice, 2 times a day, throughout the day. After which you need to take a break for 10 days. Repeat the course 3-5 times.

Soak cotton swabs in the product and insert one by one into each nasal passage for 15 minutes, 2 times a day. The course of treatment is 2 months. After which you need to take a break for 1 month and repeat the course.
An infusion of celandine is also used to rinse the sinuses. This method is most effective in treating nasal polyps. The infusion is poured into each nostril one by one and spat. The procedure must be done 2-3 times a day for 15 days.
How to treat nasal polyps in a child?
After you find out what foods you are allergic to, you can begin treating polyps in your child using traditional methods.
- antibiotics (Augmentin, Azimed)
- antiallergic drugs (Citrine)
- mast cell membrane stabilizers (Ketotifen)
- steroid drugs (Beclomethasone)
In order to stop the growth of polyps, it is necessary to increase immunity. This can be done through hardening and taking vitamins, immunomodulating drugs and special bacterial antigens (vaccines).
- nasal congestion for several weeks
- smell disturbances
- snore
- headache
- copious mucopurulent discharge
- hoarseness of voice
A laser is suitable for removing single polyps in a child. This procedure is the least traumatic and does not require a long hospital stay.
How are nasal polyps removed?
- Loop removal. In the ENT departments of hospitals, you will be offered a polypectomy (surgery to remove a polyp) with a cutting loop. Most often it is performed under local anesthesia through the nostril.

Treatment of nasal polyps with folk remedies - effective recipes
If you have difficulty breathing through your nose, constant nasal discharge, perhaps purulent, then you should consult a specialist to check the likelihood of nasal polyps.
Polyps are benign growths in the nose that increase the area of the mucous membrane, but create obstacles to the passage of air flow during breathing.
Reasons for appearance
The factors that cause the formation of nasal polyps are completely unknown.
It is noted that their appearance coincides with the following phenomena:
- An allergic reaction of the mucous membrane to some substance can initiate the formation of polyps. Especially if the allergen is constantly present in a person’s environment and irritates the mucous membrane.
- The reason for the creation of formations in the nose can be long-term or chronic inflammatory processes of the mucous membrane.
- Fungus in the body is the same as staphylococcus - each of the factors can cause the growth of polyps in the nose.
- A physiological feature of a person - a curved nasal septum contributes to congestion in the nose, creating an obstruction. This can cause a mucosal reaction in the form of polyp growth. A septal defect occurs as a result of trauma.
Is it possible to get rid of polyposis using folk remedies?
At the initial stages of pathology development, the use of folk recipes can be effective. Traditional medicine recipes should be used after consultation with your doctor.
Often the cause of polyposis is an allergy, and herbal remedies can also cause this phenomenon. Careless use of such medications may not only not help, but also cause harm. Usually a test is done on the elbow for a possible reaction.
Traditional medicine recipes for polyps often influence the cause of polyps in their action. Therefore, if you follow the dosages and do the procedures persistently, adhering to the dosage schedule, you can achieve positive results.
The best folk remedies for treating nasal polyps
Traditional medicine offers a large number of recipes for eliminating nasal polyps, which have different methods of application:
- instillation into the nasal passages,
- rinsing the nose with solutions,
- laying turundas,
- lubrication of polyps,
- snorting powder
- oral administration of drugs
- and others.
The following tips are considered the most recognized:
- Rinse the nasal sinuses with saline solution. To do this, use special watering cans or rubber cans. The solution is made: a teaspoon of salt is dissolved in boiled water at a warm temperature in a volume of 700 ml. To avoid irritation of the mucous membrane, the solution is filtered before use. It is very good to use sea salt. If the solution contains ordinary salt, then add two drops of iodine. In addition to the previously indicated methods of use, the liquid can be instilled into the nasal passages, and also drawn into the nose from the palm. This procedure helps restore the mucous membrane to its natural functions.
- Tincture of white lily - turundas in the nasal passages, moistened with tincture, for a month can lead to a positive result. The procedure can be performed up to three times during the day.
- A popular method is to use horsetail infusion. The tincture is inhaled through the nose 9–10 times a day for 14 days. Brew the composition at the rate of a tablespoon of raw materials per glass of boiling water.
- Natural ingredients are used for recipes:
- chamomile,
- hemlock (beware, the plant is poisonous),
- spurge,
- pine needles
- calendula,
- sage,
- St. John's wort,
- beet juice,
- sea buckthorn and wild rosemary oils
- and others.
- Polyps can be treated using oral medications. One example: a teaspoon of hops and two tablespoons of pine needles are placed in a glass and poured with boiling water. After half an hour, the drink is brought to a boil again. This composition is drunk throughout the day. Schedule for taking the drug: drink for three days, skip for six days. They repeat the same thing two more times. The infusion strengthens the immune system and the body turns on reserves to fight formations.
Celandine for polyps
The plant has antitumor properties. Polyps are formations of a benign nature. Treatment with celandine can lead to getting rid of the pathology.
The patient should exercise patience and discipline, and a positive result is possible throughout the year. The plant is rich in alkaloids, which have the following qualities:
- antimicrobial,
- anti-inflammatory
- and antifungal.
Recipes for treating polyps using celandine:
- Turunda from herbal infusion. The dried raw material (a teaspoon) is infused with boiling water in a volume of 300 ml for a third of an hour. After this, the infusion is filtered. Over the course of a week, turundas soaked in the infusion are placed alternately in each nasal passage for ten minutes. This procedure is performed once a day. Turundas are used throughout the year according to the following schedule: two months of treatment, a month of rest. The two months during which celandine treatment is carried out also have their own rhythm of action: seven active days (manipulations are performed) - seven days of rest.
- Application of grass juice. The plant has healing powers at the time of flowering (May, June). During this period, it is collected for juice treatment. The product is prepared as follows:
- Plants with all parts are taken:
- stem,
- flowers,
- root.
- The plants are washed and dried, then crushed using a meat grinder. Typically you run the herb through the grinder twice.
- The resulting pulp is squeezed through a cloth. The juice is poured into dark glass containers and closed tightly.
- After about a week, the juice begins to ferment. Until this process is completed, air should be allowed to escape. To do this, the lid is periodically opened and closed again.
- The resulting product is stored in the refrigerator. The juice removes warts well; for this purpose it is used in its pure form. To treat polyps, use a remedy diluted in boiled water one to one.
- Plants with all parts are taken:
The schedule for instilling the diluted product into the nose is as follows:
- a week of treatment - ten days break,
- after five such courses of procedures - a month of rest,
- repeat the original course.
Directions for use: instill two drops into each nasal passage in the morning.
Homeopathy therapy
This method has proven to be effective when used after surgical removal of polyps. The operation does not affect the causes of the pathology.
The remedies are intended for the type of polyps:
- If the formation is fleshy, then the following means are used alternately:
- silicea 6,
- phosphorus 6,
- kali bichromicum 3.
- In case of mucous pathology, it is recommended:
- Sulfur 6 and Kali bichromicum 3 twice a day, using alternately every other day.
- It is also possible to use Calcarea carbonica for six days. Take in the morning (2 drops).
- Teucrium glycerin is used in this way:
- Dry powder is used as a sniffing agent.
- In the form of an essence, the drug is used to lubricate polyps.
- The powder, diluted in water (there should be a sixth of the powder per volume of water taken), is drawn into the nasal passages. The manipulation is carried out four times a day.
Nasal polyps: symptoms and treatment. How to cure with folk remedies
Nasal polyps are benign growths of the mucous epithelium. It is the presence of one or more pearly gray jelly-like lumps.
Small formations do not cause any problems; large ones tend to block the airways.
Based on this, they can be visible, hanging from the nostrils, or not visible (if they are polyps in the sinuses), and special medical instruments are required to identify them.
The nose is a kind of natural and effective “filter” for every person: the villi on the inner surface of this organ remove over 80% of harmful particles, most of which are contained in dust.
It settles around the front of the middle of the nasal concha, becoming the source of many ailments, the symptoms and treatment of which depend on a wide range of factors.
Nasal polyps are abnormal growths or, as they are also called, “excess meat in the nose,” and should not be compared with polyposis, which is found in the large intestine, bladder or urethra, since they are never malignant, therefore, the symptoms and treatment are absolutely others.
Nasal polyps: symptoms
You can suspect the presence of nasal polyposis by observing:
- stuffiness and profuse runny nose;
- facial pain;
- reduced ability to smell (hyposmia) or its complete absence (anosmia);
- loss of appetite;
- itching of the eyelids.
Many people are also at risk of developing asthmatic syndrome, which causes symptoms such as wheezing and sensitivity to fumes, dust and chemicals.
Types of nasal polyps. Localization
There are usually two types: antrochoanal and ethmoidal polyposis. The first comes from the antrum and upper jaw, grows towards the posterior respiratory passage, reaching the nasopharynx. Most often, patients in the preschool-adolescent category are susceptible to this condition.
Ethmoidal benign neoplasms have different characteristics: they are bilateral, multiple, grow from the ethmoidal sinus, can appear at any age, and, given their always large size, are well visualized.
Causes of polyposis
Sometimes, the formation of a polypoid mass is preceded by a series of attacks of bronchial asthma, but there are a number of other circumstances.
Predisposing conditions include: aspirin intolerance; chronic sinus infection (polypous sinusitis develops); genetic factor (cystic fibrosis); hay fever and hereditary predisposition to varying degrees of polyposis.
Nasal polyps in a child: symptoms
Since breathing promotes the exchange of air between the environment and the lungs, it is not surprising that there is a certain risk in one breath taken of absorbing pathogenic media that cause chronic inflammation.
Pollen, mold spores, animal hair, dust mites, particulate matter from street dirt and many other substances can provoke inflammation of the mucous epithelium of the labyrinth.
Polyposis is the end result of long-term failure to comply with therapeutic measures for these conditions, to which children are more susceptible due to their still fragile immunity.
It can be quite difficult to identify these drop-shaped growths in them: parents do not always understand why children are restless, cry, refuse to eat, experience fear (if the tumor completely or partially blocks the respiratory canal), and suddenly become cyanotic.
The most common underlying cause of childhood polyposis is cystic fibrosis. Also among the dominant causes are chronic sinusitis, aspirin hypersensitivity syndrome and allergic or fungal rhinitis.
Growths appear near the maxillary sinus, with a tendency to spread to the nasopharynx. If they are barely noticeable, they create minor problems in the form of snoring and mouth breathing.
Massive abnormal elements have a detrimental effect on children's health, since their presence is accompanied by headaches, as well as constant difficulties due to concomitant diseases of the ears and throat.
Why are nasal polyps dangerous?
Since the growths block the full flow of air and the outflow of natural secretions, there is a possibility of a number of aggravating circumstances occurring.
Nasal polyps: diagnosis
Medical practice shows that a diagnosis can be made after receiving answers to some questions regarding the manifestations of the disease and complaints arising from it; mandatory activities - general inspection and examination.
If a specialist sees the relevance of conducting additional research methods, then the following are performed:
What do nasal polyps look like?
Treatment involves solving the primary problem - reducing the size of the polypoid mass with the help of medications.
People with status asthmaticus are prohibited from taking acetylsalicylic acid, as this always leads to shortness of breath.
In situations where the neoplasm does not allow a person to breathe normally, creating a risk of complications and critical conditions, the surgeon performs a nose operation - removal of polyps, a short-term procedure that requires subsequent compliance with certain hygienic procedures.
How to get rid of nasal polyps without surgery?
Polyps tend to increase in size. At the 1st stage of the disease, they block the upper part of the nasal cavity, and at the third stage the entire space is already blocked. Polyps make breathing difficult and impair the sense of smell, absorbing all infections like sponges.
That is why experts recommend starting treatment as early as possible. There are drug and surgical therapy, as well as homeopathy, physiotherapy, and breathing exercises. The regimen and method of therapy largely depend on the cause and severity of the disease.
Conservative treatment
Drug treatment is designed to eliminate factors affecting the rate of proliferation of pathogenic cells. This can be a whole range of procedures. Sometimes, in addition to the otolaryngologist, you need to visit an allergist and immunologist.
These specialists first prescribe tests, after which they prescribe antihistamine tablets and advise avoiding contact with a certain irritant, as well as infectious and fungal agents.
As a rule, second-generation antigens that do not have cardiotoxic and sedative effects are used:
If the cause is intolerance to acetylsalicylic acid, products containing salicins are excluded from the diet, and it is forbidden to use medications whose active ingredient is aspirin.
Use of oral corticosteroids
No matter how sad it may sound, today hormones remain the drugs of choice. Prednisolone is most often prescribed. Its dosage in adults: mg for a week, then gradually, over 21 days, reduce the number of tablets taken until complete failure.
The pediatric dose is calculated individually using the formula: 1 mg of medication per kilogram of body weight per day.
The effect of the drug in question is based on reducing the rate of cell division. This prevents it from growing further than the mucous membrane; the growth itself is destroyed over time.
Patients with asthma or rhinitis respond best to this therapy. At the same time, for those patients whose pathology is not associated with an allergic reaction, prednisolone may not help at all.
The method also has significant drawbacks: in order for the tumor to resolve, the patient is prescribed to take large portions of the drug daily for a long time.
This will get rid of the disease in question, but can lead to other problems: obesity, decreased immunity, ulcers, and other side effects, of which GCS has plenty.
The patient is given two injections at an interval of two weeks. Next, the polyp will gradually shrink (dead cells are removed when you blow your nose).
If everything is done correctly and the drug is chosen correctly, the polyp will completely disappear in 1-2 months. But this does not guarantee that the problem will not return after some time.
In light of this, it is important to establish the causes of the disease and regularly carry out preventive procedures: gymnastics, rinsing, diet, etc.
Topical corticosteroids
This group includes hormonal sprays. With their help, you can stop the reproduction of small tumors. But they are not so effective for massive growths. The most popular drugs in this group are:
- Nazarel and Flixonase, Fluticasone, Avamis, etc. with the active ingredient Fluticasone.
- Nasonex (Mometasone). It is approved for use in children aged 2 years and older and has high anti-inflammatory activity.
- Budesonide, as well as Aldecin, Beconase and Nasobek.
To reduce swelling and make breathing easier, decongestants may be prescribed (for no more than a week at a time).
Indications for surgical intervention:
- Great difficulty in nasal breathing.
- The presence of local pustules and inflammation.
Contraindications:
- Exacerbation of asthma or obstructive bronchitis.
- Flowering period of allergenic plants.
Folk remedies for treating nasal polyps
Celandine shows amazing results as a non-drug remedy for the treatment of polyposis. Here are some good recipes.
- Celandine flowers are twisted in a meat grinder.
- Squeeze out the juice and pour it into a glass jar, seal it and place in a dark place for 6–8 days. Every day you need to open the lid to let out the air.
- The resulting liquid is diluted in equal proportions with cooled boiled water. You need to put 2 drops in your nose every morning.
The frequency of the procedures is 7 days, then a break for 10 days, and repeat this 4 times. Then a pause for a month and repeat the course.
Tincture
- A teaspoon of dried crushed plant is poured with 300 ml of boiling water, wrapped, allowed to brew for 20 minutes and filtered.
- After the tincture has cooled, soak cotton swabs with it.
- Insert the tampon into one nasal passage for 10 minutes, then into the other. Frequency – once a day.
The treatment regimen is as follows: 7 days of treatment, the same interval - and so on for 60 days. After this, they take a break for a month and repeat everything again.
Daily nasal rinsing is effective if breathing is very difficult. Here you should act carefully, remove any crusts and mucus that have formed. Sometimes this is done by a doctor, but these manipulations can also be performed at home using a rubber bulb.
- 1 tsp. salts are diluted in 1 tbsp. water at a temperature of °C and 3 drops of iodine.
- Make cotton wool pads and, after soaking them in iodine, treat the polyps
You can also use ready-made solutions: Otrivin-More, Dolphin, Aqua-Maris, Marimer.
In some cases, homeopathy produces excellent results. However, it would not be superfluous, especially if children have polyps, to arm themselves with the opinion of specialists.
After all, if we are talking about growths that have arisen as a result of the influence of an irritant, the situation can be aggravated if the medication is selected incorrectly. Most often from this series, Thuja 200 or propolis are prescribed.
Minor growths can be treated with hydrogen peroxide. Treatment is carried out 1-2 times a day, no longer than 7 days in a row.
- Soak two cotton swabs with peroxide.
- Insert into nostrils for 3-4 minutes.
Special gymnastics restores the ability to breathe through the nose. The methods of Buteyko or Strelnikova helped a lot of people. It will also be useful to do self-massage of the ternary nerve.
So, let’s answer the question that interests many: is treatment without surgery effective?
Removal of nasal polyps. Types of operations
When polyps interfere with normal breathing and do not respond even to long-term drug treatment, surgical intervention is required.
Since this is an outpatient procedure, the patient returns home within a day. Full recovery occurs in approximately two to three weeks. People with bleeding disorders, coronary heart disease or asthma should not have nasal polyps removed.
How nasal polyps are removed depends on the number, size and location of the pathological growth. The doctor will choose the most optimal method from among the existing ones.
Polypotomy. The most reliable and proven operation for removing polyps. It is performed when there is a single pathological growth, but if there are multiple elements, their endoscopic elimination is proposed.
Before the procedure, mucus is removed from the cavity and local anesthetics are administered. Given the fact that the upcoming actions are painful, the patient is given general anesthesia.
A dilator is inserted into the nasal cavity - this allows the surgeon to get a clear picture of the clinical picture.
The intervention consists of using a wire loop: the doctor circles it around the growth, tearing it off the surface of the mucous membrane with a sharp movement. This removal option is very traumatic, since a certain area of healthy tissue is damaged: it is simply impossible for a doctor to predict the situation and guarantee the absence of bleeding.
Sometimes, if the nasal passage is very narrow, the surgeon may place plastic splints to prevent the formation of adhesions as the nasal passage heals.
In some cases, nasal surgery is performed with a shaver - a special cutting device with which the surgeon excises the tumor, using tweezers to clean the inside of the nose from its remains. Then, to avoid bleeding, tamponade is performed with the possible application of an aseptic dressing. Functional endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses. It has proven itself to be a minimally invasive technique where precise elimination of the polyposis phenomenon can be carried out along with cleansing of the sinuses, thus restoring air access and functional ability.
This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts an endoscope—a small tube with magnifying optics or a microscopic camera—into the airway. Then, using instruments, the doctor removes growths that interfere with the outflow of mucous secretions from the nasal canals.
It should be emphasized that surgery to remove a nasal polyp, performed by an experienced otolaryngologist, is a safe procedure, in most cases without complications. Laser coagulation. This is the principle of eliminating polyposis - the key to solving the problem of difficulty breathing caused by blocking the nasal passage by an abnormal mucous formation.
The technique is based on the use of carbon dioxide, the beam of which is focused on the structure of the polyp for 5 - 7 seconds, reducing the size of the mucous tumor and subsequently completely eliminating it.
The laser pulse is delivered from a special probe with a thin diameter, which allows the doctor to control the progress of coagulation, protecting healthy tissue from damage.
Comparing this method with a surgical or endoscopic analogue, a number of advantages can be identified: it is performed on an outpatient basis and is characterized by excision of only the affected areas of the membrane.
The intervention begins after preliminary local anesthesia and lasts no more than 50 minutes. Due to the fact that high concentration laser energy is used, there are fewer violations of the integrity of healthy tissue, there is no postoperative redness, swelling, pain and other secondary complications, and recovery itself occurs much faster.
To avoid false expectations, the patient scheduled for surgery to remove polyps is informed that his sense of smell will not be restored immediately after the procedure.
After surgery: possible complications
Meningitis can be life-threatening and cause severe headache, fever, or a stiff neck. As a rule, the phenomenon is identified and eliminated during the operation without causing additional difficulties.
In some cases, affected patients may need to undergo additional surgery to repair damaged bone tissue.
Postoperative wound care includes the following:
- avoid blowing your nose during the first 3 days after the procedure;
- Spray saline into the nasal cavity daily;
- apply a warm compress several times a day - this will help relieve mild discomfort;
- take the full course of the prescribed medication;
- Do not be in places with high dust levels.
Surgery is not a permanent solution to nasal polyps. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that growths and adhesions in the nose after surgery will not appear again after they are surgically removed.
Some people are susceptible to this condition, and the fundamental predisposing factors are not well established.
