A recent study by Sullivan illustrates this point. The degree of impairment depended on the dose of alcohol. In the first hour of sleep, for example, the average number of apneas in the group of subjects increased from twelve to thirty-eight, and the average duration of each apnea increased from seventeen to thirty-four seconds. Sullivan was particularly concerned about dangerously low blood oxygen levels at night after drinking alcohol. In healthy people, blood oxygen saturation is usually one hundred percent, but in the participants in the experiment it fell from an already low level - eighty-nine percent to seventy-three, and in some - much lower.
It is very likely that such low values, repeated repeatedly throughout the night, will lead to permanent disturbances in brain activity. Sullivan even suggests that the choking that occurs with heavy snoring or PSA during sleep may well cause severe brain damage after drinking alcohol.

7 tips to deal with snoring
If you are one of the 45 percent of people who snore at least occasionally, or someone close to you snores, then snoring is unlikely to seem like a joke to you. The fact is that snoring deprives your partner of sleep, can be a sign of serious health problems, and can ultimately create significant rifts in the relationship.
Here are some simple solutions to help you deal with your snoring problem.
1. Change your sleeping position

Why snoring is dangerous and how to treat it, said Alexander Melnikov, head of the somnology department of the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of Otorhinolaryngology on Volokolamsk Highway.
What is the reason
Snoring is a fairly common phenomenon. If a person snores occasionally (from time to time, not every night), this does not pose a threat to his life and health.
Another thing is constant, intense, loud snoring that repeats every night. It almost always indicates pathology - impaired breathing function during sleep. This type of snoring cannot be ignored and must be treated.
— Constant snoring is associated with respiratory arrest syndrome, when a person stops breathing during sleep from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. At this time, the level of oxygen in the blood decreases, the quality of sleep is disrupted, which in turn can provoke cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke, says Alexander Melnikov.
Deaths can occur when sleep apnea is associated with an abnormal heart rhythm. Alcohol or certain groups of drugs can act as a respiratory depressant.

“In pregnant women, snoring can lead to pathology in both the mother and the fetus,” notes Alexander Melnikov.
People over 60 years of age are also at risk. At this age, as a rule, the frequency of respiratory dysfunction increases.
How to treat
A special study, polysomnography, allows you to find out the cause of snoring and make an accurate diagnosis. During night sleep, special sensors are connected to the patient, which determine the causes of respiratory dysfunction, the level of oxygen in the blood, monitor cardiac activity, and so on.
Snoring can and should be treated, somnologists say. The main treatment method for severe respiratory dysfunction is CPAP therapy. A special device that is placed on a person’s face creates increased air pressure in the airways, preventing them from narrowing during sleep. It regulates the airflow pressure level to ensure smooth breathing.
For less severe respiratory dysfunction, intraoral devices are used - mouthguards, which increase the lumen of the airways during sleep.
Both of these treatments can be done on an outpatient basis.
“CPAP therapy and intraoral devices can eliminate snoring, as well as prevent pathologies associated with it,” says Alexander Melnikov.

When we sleep, the area at the back of the throat sometimes narrows as the muscles relax, even becoming temporarily closed. The same amount of air passing through this smaller hole can cause the tissues surrounding the hole to vibrate, which in turn can cause snoring sounds. What causes snoring in different people depends on different reasons for this narrowing, which can be in both the nose and throat. The sound of snoring is often worse when a person breathes through the mouth or when there is nasal congestion.
Function of the nose in normal breathing
For breathing at rest, the nose is ideal as the nose acts as a humidifier, warmer and filter for the incoming air. When we breathe through our mouths, these changes in the air entering our lungs occur to a lesser extent. Our lungs are able to use colder, drier, dirtier air; but you may have noticed that breathing such air can be uncomfortable. So our bodies naturally want us to breathe through our nose as much as possible.
Structure of the nose
The nose consists of two parallel passages, one on each side, called the nasal cavities. They are separated by a thin wall in the middle (the septum), which is a relatively flat wall of cartilage, bone, tissue, and lining (called the nasal mucosa). On the lateral side (wall of the nose closest to the cheeks) of each canal, there are three turbinates, which have a long, cylindrical structure that lie approximately parallel to the floor of the nose. The turbinates contain many small blood vessels that function to regulate air flow. If the blood vessels in the nose increase in size, the turbinate as a whole swells and air flow decreases. If the vessels narrow, then the air flow increases.
Almost everyone has a natural nasal cycle that, in general, every 2 to 6 shifts breathing functions to a different side. For example, if the right turbinate is swollen, most of the air enters the left nasal passage. After approximately 6 hours, the right turbinate will become smaller and the left turbinate will swell, moving most of the air into the desired nasal passage. You may notice this cycle when you have a cold or if you have chronic (long-standing) nasal congestion. The turbinates may also become swollen from allergic reactions or external irritants such as cold air or dirt.
Snoring and nasal structure
As mentioned above, we naturally want to breathe through our nose. Some people are unable to breathe through their nose due to obstruction of the nasal passages. This may be caused by a problem with the nasal septum, allergies, sinus infection, swelling of the nasal turbinates, or large adenoids (tonsils at the back of the throat).
In adults, the most common causes of nasal congestion are a deviated septum due to a broken nose, in which case surgery may be required for snoring, or due to tissue swelling from allergies. People with nasal airway obstruction snore because the flow of air through the mouth causes more tissue vibration.
In children, enlarged adenoids (tonsils at the back of the throat) often cause obstruction, causing children to snore.
Soft palate and snoring
The soft palate is a muscular extension of the bony hard palate. It separates the back of the mouth (oropharynx) from the nasal passages (nasopharynx). The soft palate is leaf-shaped and hangs loosely at the back of the mouth.
The soft palate is important in breathing and swallowing
During nasal breathing, the palate moves forward and “opens” the nasal airways to allow air to pass into the lungs.
During swallowing, the palate moves backward and “closes” the nasal passages, thereby directing food and liquid into the esophagus rather than into the back of the nose.
The uvula is a small extension at the back of the soft palate. It helps with soft palate function and is also used in some languages (Hebrew and Farsi) to produce guttural fricative sounds (as in the Hebrew word "L'Chaim"). At the same time, the most popular English language in the world does not use glottal fricative sounds.
The uvula is often the “structure” that vibrates during snoring and only surgical snoring treatment can change these structures and prevent guttural slit sounds. Therefore, if you speak a language that uses glottal fricative sounds, then surgical treatment for snoring may not be recommended for you.
After a night of heavy snoring, the soft palate and uvula may be swollen in the morning, and people sometimes experience an increased feeling of nausea in the morning until the swelling subsides.
Constricted airways and snoring
Tonsils are designed to detect and fight infections. They are located at the back of the mouth on each side of the throat (oropharynx). They are also called palatine tonsils. Like other infection-fighting tissues, tonsils swell as they fight bacteria and viruses. Often, the tonsils do not return to their normal size even after getting rid of the infection; they remain enlarged (hypertrophied) and narrow the vibrating airways, which can cause snoring.
The soft palate, as described above, is a flap of tissue that hangs down at the back of the mouth. If it is too long or flexible, it can vibrate and cause snoring during sleep.
The uvula is suspended in the center and back of the soft palate. An abnormally long or thick uvula may also contribute to snoring.
The base of the tongue is the part of the tongue that lies further back in the mouth. The tongue is a large muscle that is important for guiding food during chewing and swallowing. It is also important for forming words while we speak. It is attached to the inside of the jawbone (lower jaw) at the front and the hyoid bone underneath.
To function properly, the tongue must move freely in all directions. If the back of the tongue is too large or if the tongue is able to slide backwards, it can narrow the space through which air flows in the throat, which can lead to vibrations and snoring.
Stages of sleep and snoring
Sleep consists of several stages, but generally they can be divided into REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM stages. Snoring can occur during all or only some stages of sleep. Snoring is the most common stage of REM sleep, due to the loss of muscle tone that characterizes this stage of sleep.
During REM sleep, the brain sends a signal to all muscles in the body (except for the breathing muscles) to relax. Unfortunately, the tongue and palate can droop when they relax, narrowing the airway and increasing snoring.
Sleeping and snoring position
When we sleep, we usually (though not always) do so while lying down. Gravity affects the entire body, but the tissues of the pharynx are relatively soft. Therefore, when we lie on our back, gravity pulls the roof of the mouth, tonsils and tongue in the opposite direction. This often narrows the airways enough to cause turbulence in airflow, tissue vibrations, and snoring. Sometimes, if a snorer is gently reminded (for example, with a gentle elbow to the ribs) to roll over, the soft tissue is no longer pulled back and snoring decreases.
How medications and alcohol affect snoring
The main cause of snoring is vibration of tissues during breathing. Some medications, as well as alcohol, can lead to increased muscle relaxation during sleep. When the muscles of the roof of the mouth, tongue, neck, and throat relax more than usual, the airways become deformed and become smaller, causing the tissue to vibrate more. Some medications encourage deeper levels of sleep, which can also increase sleep snoring.
Why is snoring a problem?
Snoring can sometimes be the only sign of a larger problem in the body. People who snore should receive an overall health assessment to ensure that things like sleep apnea, breathing problems or other medical conditions are not causing their snoring.
