Procedures for sinusitis are the best way to resolve problems associated with the inflammatory process. There are quite a lot of them and they are varied, we have selected the most effective and affordable ones for you, so any technique that you like best can be applied in the very near future.
Physiotherapy
In physiotherapy, physical factors are used to obtain a positive result of therapy. In the treatment of sinusitis, in addition to drug treatment aimed at eliminating the infection, physiotherapy is also actively used. Their tasks include stimulating local blood circulation, which helps reduce swelling and the outflow of fluid from the sinuses, as well as a thermal effect on tissue and pain relief. Physical therapy is often used in pediatrics.
UHF (ultra high frequencies)
The properties of radiation allow dosed exposure to a limited area. The UHF device generates an electromagnetic field, which causes local expansion of capillaries and increases their permeability.
The anti-inflammatory effect is achieved by stimulating local blood circulation and lymph formation, tissue metabolism, reducing exudation and eliminating swelling. The procedure inhibits the vital activity of microbes and has a resolving and analgesic effect. UHF electromagnetic oscillations during sinusitis can warm tissue to a depth of 6 cm.
UFO (ultraviolet irradiation)
The positive effects of ultraviolet irradiation are based on the fact that some molecules in the tissues of a living organism are able to completely absorb light waves, while releasing biologically active substances that enter the blood. This stimulates intensive migration of leukocytes to the site of inflammation and phagocytosis (their enhanced fight against the causative agent of the disease). The procedure for ultraviolet irradiation of the nasal mucosa is carried out using tubes of different diameters.
Electrophoresis
Electrophoresis is based on the process of dissociation of a substance in an aqueous solution. This means that an electric current is passed through the drug solution, so that the ions of the dissolved drug begin to purposefully penetrate the skin or mucous membranes.
Accumulating in the area of application, they have a therapeutic effect. After which they are gradually absorbed into the bloodstream, which carries the medicine throughout the body, but the main amount remains at the injection site. The so-called Darsonval works on this principle.
Magnetotherapy
It uses an alternating magnetic field that acts locally. Under the influence of the magnetic field, very weak electric currents begin to arise, activating redox reactions that stimulate enzymatic activity and local blood circulation. In this case, the swelling of the mucous membrane decreases, which leads to an improvement in the outflow of contents from the sinus, pain and inflammation decrease, and infectious agents die.
UT (ultrasound therapy)
The UT device converts electricity and produces pulsed ultrasonic waves, which in therapeutic dosages have a physical effect on tissues and muscle fibers. This is expressed in the form of tissue micromassage (cellular massage), which improves the diffusion of physiological fluid through cell membranes, enhances metabolism, creates “deep heat,” activates enzymes, and reduces pain. Ultrasound penetrates to a depth of 4 cm.
Activities to cleanse the nose and sinuses
Rinsing the nose using antiseptic and saline solutions
The following solutions are used for the procedure:
- Furacilin or Miramistin;
- Self-prepared saline solution (a teaspoon of sea or table salt per liter of water).
- Saline;
- Decoctions of chamomile, calendula and string.
Nasal rinsing at home:
The liquid for washing at room temperature is poured into a container with a narrow neck (for example, a small kettle). Slowly pour the solution into one nostril, while the head is slightly tilted in the opposite direction. Then repeat the procedure on the other side. The solution flows out through the mouth and other nostril along with the discharge from the nose and sinuses.
Nasal lavage using the Proetz method of moving fluids (“cuckoo”)
The essence of the procedure: the patient lies on the couch, and the doctor pours a rinsing solution into one nostril. At this time, the assistant brings the aspirator to the other nostril and removes this solution along with the contents of the sinuses. During the procedure, the patient repeats “peek-a-boo” so that the soft palate closes the entrance to the oropharynx and the liquid does not flow into the throat. Antiseptic solutions are used:
- Furacilin;
- Miramistin;
- Diluted hydrogen peroxide;
- Saline.
Yamic catheter
The essence of the procedure: The patient is in a sitting position. After preliminary anemia and anesthesia, the catheter is inserted into the nasal cavity. The posterior and then the anterior balloons of the Yamik catheter are inflated. And they create a difference in pressure, due to which the pathological contents come out of the sinus.
The patient lies on his side and the doctor injects an antiseptic or other disinfecting drug into the nasal cavity, which, under slight pressure, penetrates the maxillary sinus.
Inhalation treatment
Inhalation is a treatment method that involves inhaling water vapor with a drug dissolved in it. The main advantages of inhalations for sinusitis are:
- The medicine quickly enters the nasal cavity;
- There are no complications as with taking pills or injections;
- Has a therapeutic effect on all parts of the respiratory tract;
- Minimum side effects and mild, long-lasting action;
- Can be used for sinusitis in children of any age.
For steam inhalations for sinusitis, decoctions of medicinal herbs, mineral water, saline solutions, essential oils, steam from boiled jacket potatoes, and propolis are used.
Carrying out hardware inhalations allows the use of medications in the treatment of sinusitis (immunostimulants, mucolytics, antibiotics, antiseptics, etc.).

Physiotherapy for runny nose in children and adults
For the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses, vasomotor and allergic rhinitis, medical science has reserved many methods. The lion's share of this rich arsenal falls on physiotherapy for the nose. Treatment of any type of runny nose should not stop at any one method (medication or physiotherapy, acupressure or acupuncture). It must be comprehensive and take into account the peculiarities of the pathological process. And although there are more than enough therapeutic agents for treating the nose, it is worth paying attention to therapy.
Basic methods of physiotherapy
There are quite a lot of methods used to treat nasal pathology. Moreover, physiotherapy can be combined with the administration of medications. Conventionally, physiotherapeutic methods can be divided into:
- Anti-inflammatory (ultrasound exposure, magnetic therapy, SUF, SMV methods).
- Bacteriostatic (KUF, darsonvalization of the affected area, endonasal electrophoresis with antibiotics and bacteriostatics).
- Antiviral (inhalation and electrophoresis with interferon).
The main methods that are applicable for almost any type of runny nose are the following:
- Inhalation procedures.
- Ultrasound therapy.
- Magnetic therapy.
- KUF.
- Electrophoresis with electrodes placed directly into the nasal passages (endonasal).
- Rinsing the nose with saline solutions.
- Darsonval to the affected area.
For the treatment of inflammatory pathologies of the nasal passages, the following may be recommended:
- UHF to the affected area.
- Dry heat (applicable at home).
- Warming up reflex zones (mustard foot baths, dry mustard, etc.) in a medical facility is SUF therapy.
- SMV treatment (centimeter wave therapy).
- It is also recommended to rinse the nose with local antiseptics (Ectericide, Miramistin).
If the maxillary sinuses are affected, rinsing methods may be recommended:
- According to Proetz (the method is commonly known as the “cuckoo method”).
- Using a pit catheter.
If children have a runny nose, all of the above procedures, if there are no contraindications, can be carried out. Therefore, it is worth considering each in more detail.
Inhalation procedures
This method is easy to perform. It can be carried out the “grandmother’s” way - inhaling steam over a bowl, or using modern methods using various devices. Nebulizers are the most popular today. With their help you can enter:
- Medicines.
- Herbal remedies.
- Moisturizing solutions.
- Softening and wound-healing oils.
Using a nebulizer, it is easy to organize treatment for the smallest child. The advantages of this technique are:
- Minimum contraindications (especially for hardware options).
- Minimum complications and side effects (the main complication is an allergy to the injected drug).
- Direct delivery of the drug to the affected areas of the mucosa, bypassing the digestive system, as when taking tablets, and the liver, as when administering the drug intramuscularly.
- The effect is not only on the mucous lining of the nose, but also on the respiratory system as a whole.
An additional advantage of using a nebulizer is that the drug is sprayed into very small particles. This makes it easier to absorb and reduces consumption. The less medication enters the body, the lower the risk of complications/side effects.
Ultrasound therapy
Ultrasound therapy (UST) is sometimes called cellular vibration massage. But provoking cell vibrations is not all that ultrasound can do. He:
- Stimulates metabolic processes, increasing the permeability of cell membranes.
- Increases blood flow at the site of exposure by increasing the temperature in the affected area. This factor helps fight stagnation and swelling.
- Potentiates the production of enzymes, hyaluronate, elastin and collagen.
- Accelerates cell division (proliferation) and renewal.
The procedure helps fight signs of inflammation. It is carried out at least an hour after eating. The minimum break between UST courses is 3 months.
During treatment with UST, you should not indulge in alcohol, take sleeping pills or narcotic substances.
Magnetic therapy
This method is considered controversial in the global medical community. But a number of countries recognize it as effective. The influence of a static magnetic field on metabolic, nervous and immune processes comprehensively stimulates the body to fight inflammation. It is believed that such physical procedures change the physical and chemical components of the body’s aqueous media, affect the structure of large molecules, and change the permeability of cell membranes. All this activates the body’s own mechanisms and processes of fighting inflammation.
KUF, SUF, or ultraviolet treatment
This method involves the use of short UV waves. The main effects of this procedure include bactericidal (destroying microbial/fungal cells). UV light of this range penetrates the cell of a pathogenic microorganism and destroys its DNA/RNA or provokes mutogenesis that is lethal for microorganisms (a change in DNA leading to the non-viability of the cell).
In parallel, UV irradiation stimulates phagocytosis and the work of leukocytes in the lesion. The FUF procedure is carried out using tubes of different diameters. The SUF procedure is light ultraviolet irradiation (before the appearance of erythema) of the collar area and soles.
Endonasal electrophoresis and darsonval
If a patient has a cold, that is, a respiratory bacterial or viral infection with a runny nose, he is recommended one of the indicated procedures. Both methods are based on the dissociation of the drug in water under the influence of weak electrical currents. This solution penetrates well into tissues and is absorbed. Moreover, this method allows the delivery of colloidal solutions and protein medications.
Rinsing with saline solutions and local antiseptics
This procedure is easy to perform and does not require a visit to the clinic. This is done using special teapots or other devices (preferably) or a disposable syringe. The latter method is possible, but is not recommended by otolaryngologists, because, coming under pressure, the liquid can throw viable microorganisms deep into the nasal passages.
House flushing
Rinsing with saline solutions is effective for rhinitis of any origin (from bacterial to allergic). It is also recommended to rinse the nasal passages with medicinal herbs (their decoctions) and antiseptics for bacterial infections. The procedure is fine:
- Moisturizes the mucous membrane.
- Softens the mucous membrane.
- Has a weak bactericidal and drying effect.
- It also removes germs and allergens from the mucous membrane.
When using saline solution there are no side effects from the administration of the substance. Even allergic reactions do not occur.
Cuckoo
The procedure is performed in a clinic by medical staff (a doctor and a nurse). The patient is placed on his side, the doctor pours one of the antiseptic solutions (Furacilin, Miramistin) into one nostril, and the nurse uses an aspirator to remove the solution and the contents of the paranasal sinuses from the other nostril.
Yamic catheterization
The device for carrying out the procedure consists of the catheter itself and two balloons. After local anesthesia of the nasal passages, the catheter is inserted deep into the nasal cavity. The balloons create a pressure difference that provokes self-removal of the contents of the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses.
UHF method
Based on the effect of high-frequency EM (electromagnetic field) on the human body. Moreover, such EO penetrates deeply into all environments and tissues of the body. With adequately selected doses, serious changes occur in tissues:
- Cell proliferation (reproduction by division) in connective tissue increases.
- The permeability of the capillary walls increases, and due to this, immune compounds penetrate into the affected area in greater quantities.
- Blood and lymph flow is significantly accelerated.
This makes it possible to effectively use this method for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
Dry heat, foot baths
These methods are good for inflammatory runny nose. All these procedures stimulate metabolic processes and stimulate the body's own forces to fight inflammation.
Dry heat is usually applied topically (to the affected area). As heating elements at home, a boiled egg, bags of semolina and salt are used (the substance is preheated to high temperatures in the oven or in a frying pan).
Baths with mustard are good for fighting nasal swelling and inflammation caused by pathogenic bacteria. It is dissolved in hot water (38–40 C), then the feet are dipped into the water and steamed for about 15 minutes.
Centimeter wave therapy
Treatment with this method can be started in the second phase of the disease. It is based on the effect on the body of EM with a wavelength of 12.6 cm. The main effects of this procedure are:
- Mild analgesic.
- Active anti-inflammatory.
- Metabolic (all metabolic processes and tissue trophism at the site of the lesion are accelerated).
- Secretory (enzymes are actively produced that help fight inflammation).
Each of the mentioned methods has indications and contraindications. Many procedures are usually recommended for chronic inflammatory processes or during the recovery stage of acute pathology. That is why a physiotherapist should prescribe such treatment.

The value of CUF therapy in the treatment of diseases of the ENT organs and respiratory system
Physiotherapy offers numerous techniques that actively help eliminate the most dangerous toxins and viruses. Widespread use in complex therapy makes it possible to effectively treat and prevent colds, ARVI, diseases of muscle tissue and joints. A very popular procedure is FUV - a directed stream of short ultraviolet waves.
FUF of the nose and throat: the essence of the procedure
The essence of the healing process is that short waves of the ultraviolet spectrum have a beneficial effect on the body affected by viruses. In addition, the flow provokes the production of biologically active radicals and destroys the protein structures of pathogens. There are several wavelengths:
- nm have bactericidal, mycocidal and antiviral effects;
- 254 nm causes lethal mutations of bacteria and viruses, in which they lose the ability to reproduce. They have a particularly active effect on the pathogens of diphtheria, tetanus, and dysentery.
Indications
The indications for prescribing CF are numerous and multifaceted. Due to the high effectiveness and efficiency of the procedure, the course is prescribed to both young children and the elderly.
The appointment of KUF is carried out exclusively by a doctor after a comprehensive examination and diagnostics. Indications in the field of ENT are as follows:
How is it carried out?
The specifics of the procedure depend on where exactly the source of the disease is located.
FUF irradiation of the nose is performed on the patient while sitting, with his head slightly tilted back. Using a special nozzle, a medical professional inserts the wave emitter to a shallow depth into each nostril in turn.
The photo shows a physiotherapeutic procedure for FUF of the throat and nose
What you need to know
Therapy through the use of CUF is an amazingly effective physiotherapeutic procedure, which, when used correctly and under the constant supervision of a physician, brings enormous benefits to the body.
Its prescription as a therapeutic or preventive course is made exclusively by the doctor on a strictly individual basis. It is recommended for children from a very early age; KUF has no contraindications during normal pregnancy, does not affect lactation and does not complicate symptomatic diseases in elderly patients.
No special preparation is required for FFA; you just need to undergo a set of diagnostic measures in a medical institution. Therapy can also be carried out at home, having a quartz apparatus with an established special range. Details of use should be studied according to the attached instructions and obtain advice from the treating ENT doctor.
Technique
The procedure is carried out in a medical institution in a specially adapted room - a room or office. At home, it is necessary to carry out procedures in a clean, well-ventilated room.
- When starting work, you should turn on the device and leave it on for 3-5 minutes to set the required radiation intensity. To turn it on and off, special safety glasses must be used.
- The device is installed on a table; the patient must sit on the chair required for the procedure so that its height does not require strain and does not cause discomfort.
- Radiation is carried out under the supervision of a nurse, especially if it is necessary to use additional ENT instruments.
- The duration of the session is selected by the attending physician and is carried out according to an increasing pattern from 15 to minutes. Depending on the task, the course consists of one or three biodoses.
The benefits and harms of the procedure
Like any therapeutic technique, FUF has its positive and negative sides. The obvious priorities of the ultraviolet method include stimulation of vitamin D, vital for the body, development and thickening of the epidermis, and production of melanin.
Negative factors and consequences are few, however, FFA can cause the following complications:
- Damage to the cornea of the eye;
- Aging effect from light flux;
- Radiation burn of mucous membranes;
- Possible long-term development of oncological processes.
Usually, all these unpleasant moments arise from improper and unprofessional handling of the device, as well as from self-medication.
Indications, benefits and harms of the procedure:
Contraindications
Despite the wide range of uses and excellent therapeutic effect, CUF has a number of categorical contraindications. Procedures are not prescribed
- With increased sensitivity of mucous membranes;
- Against the background of a mental or nervous illness;
- Nephropathy, hepatitis, porphyria in any phase of the course;
- In the presence of callous ulcers of the stomach and intestinal tract;
- Acute form of cerebral blood flow disorders;
- With hypocoagulation syndrome;
- In the acute period of myocardial infarction.
How to use KUF to treat diseases of the ENT organs:
conclusions
Nowadays, medicine uses the most advanced achievements of science, innovative technologies are being introduced and developed. Nevertheless, physiotherapeutic treatment is still popular today and is in demand as an addition to the complex of therapy for a wide variety of diseases.
KUF is very popular for infectious and viral pathologies of ENT organs. Ultraviolet radiation destroys viruses, has a bactericidal effect and stops the worsening of inflammatory processes. The procedure is used in various fields of therapeutic and preventive medicine, as well as in cosmetology.

What kind of physiotherapy is there for a runny nose in children?
A runny nose is a rather unpleasant phenomenon, which is accompanied by nasal congestion and difficulty breathing. The total duration of treatment is on average 1–2 weeks. This disease very often affects children, and the lack of proper therapy can lead to serious complications.
Physiotherapy for runny nose in children is especially effective using various rehabilitation methods.
Use of physical therapy for rhinitis
Physiotherapy for a runny nose in children provides treatment for acute and chronic rhinitis. Let's consider the main methods of treatment.
UV rays
Conducting ultraviolet irradiation. Physiotherapy for rhinitis is carried out during the development of a chronic, acute form of the runny nose using special devices - emitters.
Treatment is carried out for 2-3 days, mainly in the morning, once during the day. Irradiation duration is 1–2 minutes.
UHF therapy
The use of UHF therapy is carried out using special devices for all forms of rhinitis. For acute rhinitis, it is recommended to carry out the procedure three times a day. The chronic form of the runny nose involves the use of this therapy 6-7 times, mainly in the morning.
Laser therapy
This method of physiotherapy is carried out in a hospital and at home. To carry out therapy, devices with an exposure area of up to 2 cm are used. Acute runny nose requires 4–6 procedures in the morning, and chronic rhinitis requires treatment 8–10 times throughout the day.
Important! Appropriate therapy for children with a runny nose is carried out only after the appointment of the attending physician. Self-treatment can lead to negative side effects!
Blue lamp
Warming up with a blue lamp is effective in the initial stage of a runny nose and is contraindicated in cases of purulent rhinitis, nosebleeds and a general feverish state. When the device is turned on, it is aimed at the bridge of the nose at an angle to prevent discomfort. The child should feel a slight warmth without any discomfort. The duration of the procedure is 10–20 minutes three times throughout the day. The average course of treatment is 5–7 days.
Inhalations
Inhalations are an effective way to treat runny nose in children, as they are quite easily tolerated and bring quick relief.
The procedure can be carried out independently at home, but if contraindications occur (bleeding, acute inflammation in the nose), therapy should be stopped.
During allergic manifestations, treatment is carried out in the presence of a medical professional.
Cold-type inhalations are predominantly used, since the use of hot air is not effective enough in childhood.
Foot baths
Special warming foot baths. This method is typical for the prevention and treatment of runny nose in children. The procedure is contraindicated in acute cases of the disease, as well as in children under 2 years of age. The essence of the method is to take a bath with hot water. Afterwards, be sure to wrap the child up and dress him in warm cotton clothes.
Mustard plasters
Applying mustard plasters is a traditional method of home physiotherapy, but recently it is rarely used due to the development of allergic reactions in children.
The advantage of the method is the high heating ability of the medicine, which significantly increases blood supply processes in the body, which helps eliminate the symptoms of a runny nose.
When applying mustard plasters to the back in a hot state, you should avoid the heart area.
Important! Physiotherapy for the nose is certainly an effective method of treatment, but if there are contraindications, therapy should be abandoned! Since such treatment can lead to additional complications and a long period of rehabilitation!
Physiotherapeutic procedures in children with a runny nose represent the main methods of treating this pathology. In this case, it is best to use methods prescribed by a qualified specialist to avoid the development of negative consequences!
Proper treatment and prevention of runny nose in children eliminates the development of severe complications and guarantees quick relief from nasal discomfort. For a positive effect, you must complete the full course of prescribed procedures. A healthy and cheerful child is the key to the well-being of every mother!

Physiotherapy for sinusitis: what types of physiotherapy exist, and what are their main features
The treatment of this disease must be approached comprehensively. This disease can lead to acute inflammation of the maxillary paranasal sinuses, and without timely medical intervention it will become chronic and cause a number of other diseases. The threat of exacerbation of the disease entails the need to take antibacterial drugs, and sometimes to a puncture of the maxillary sinus. Such treatment should be supplemented with methods of physiological influence on the body, which in turn will prevent the disease from entering the chronic stage. It is for such a mission that a set of physiotherapy procedures is prescribed for the treatment of pathology.
What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is inflammation of the maxillary sinuses. It occurs due to an untreated runny nose or cold, as well as neglected upper teeth. Common signs of the disease are: nasal congestion, pain localized in the forehead, high temperature. If you do not start treatment in a timely manner, the disease will develop into a purulent stage, as a result of which you will develop other equally serious diseases. People of any age are susceptible to this disease. The peak of the disease occurs mainly during the flu and cold season.
For what reasons does pathology occur?
In addition, the causes of pathology also include:
- weakening of the body's defenses
- untreated runny nose
- complications after flu
- hypothermia
- neoplasms
- excessive use of vasoconstrictor drops
- tuberculosis
- viruses
The risk of the disease increases significantly in the autumn-winter period, when there is a natural decrease in the body's defenses and seasonal hypovitaminosis.
At the first signs of pathology, you should immediately seek help from a medical facility. Only a good specialist, based on the examination results, will make the correct diagnosis and prescribe individual treatment that is right for you.
If treatment is not started, then the infection from the maxillary sinuses can spread to other organs, resulting in other diseases, for example, otitis media, conjunctivitis, etc.
About the benefits of physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for this pathology is as important as treatment with medications. These procedures are completely painless and are aimed at cleansing the maxillary sinuses, as well as relieving inflammation in them.
What specific measures will be prescribed for the illness will be determined only by a specialist, taking into account the cause and stage of the illness.
In some cases, these procedures help avoid intramuscular administration of medications and punctures of the maxillary sinuses.
What physiotherapeutic procedures are there for sinusitis?
Without exception, all physical procedures are carried out exclusively in a medical institution. The patient does not have such special devices and devices at home. In addition, he will not be able to comply with all the rules for conducting such procedures on his own - such a process should only be controlled by a specialist.
You don’t need to go to the hospital for this, you just have to come at the appointed time every day for the procedures, and then go about your business. Although many experts do not recommend going out into the open air for one hour afterward.
So, types of physiotherapy for sinusitis:
- Ultrasonic influence – the main effect of ultrasound is micromassage. The waves cause microvibrations in the tissues, thereby stimulating metabolic processes in them and enhancing the production of necessary enzymes.
- Inhalations - this procedure has been especially popular lately. It is carried out with medications that, bypassing all barriers, are delivered almost instantly.
- Electrophoresis - thanks to the effect of current on the inflamed sinuses, the patient feels better every time. The course of such procedures is usually 10. Each session lasts 15 minutes.
- Electromagnetic therapy - thanks to ultrasonic and frequency waves, the sinuses are affected, swelling is reduced and the production of enzymes is increased.
- Mud therapy - such procedures are most often used to treat chronic sinusitis. Therapeutic mud has a warming, anti-inflammatory effect, and also relieves pain.
- Diadynamic pulse currents - prescribed when the disease is accompanied by severe pain. This procedure also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Physiotherapy for pathology is carried out together with the use of antiviral, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Below we will look at each type in more detail and get acquainted with the contraindications of physiotherapy.
Ultrasound and inhalation
Thanks to the ultrasound procedure, the sinuses are massaged. Such sound waves are not detected by the human ear, but they are very effective in treating pathology. In general, ultrasound is very useful for the human body: it increases its protective functions, improves metabolism, and accelerates the production of enzymes that can fight pathogenic microorganisms. The course of ultrasound treatment consists of sessions. One session lasts about 5-10 minutes on average.
There is an opinion that inhalations for this disease are ineffective, but in fact this is not the case. For the procedure to give a positive result, the right approach is important. The main advantage of this procedure for this disease is the direct delivery of drugs to the sinuses, which gives the maximum therapeutic effect. In this case, there are no side effects from the pharmaceutical drug.
Today there are 2 types of inhalations:
- using a nebulizer
- steam treatments
The most effective of them is the first option. The medicine is placed in the device container, after which the device can be turned on. Immediately, vapors of the drug appear in the mask of the device. Now you can begin the procedure. Inhalations should be carried out daily at least 4-5 times a day until complete recovery. In the chronic form of the disease, the course of such procedures is 30 days.
Mud therapy and electrophoresis
The microelements, vitamins and other beneficial substances contained in the therapeutic mud penetrate the skin and affect not only the area where the application is located, but also the entire body as a whole.
To carry out the treatment, a mud composition is used, heated to a temperature of +43C, which is then placed in a gauze bag and applied to the maxillary sinuses from the front side. Event time: minutes. The course consists of sessions. Also, this type of therapy goes well with the effects of electric current, such as galvanization and diathermy treatment. In this case, plates are placed on mud cakes, and then an electric current is applied to them in turn. The procedure time is minutes. The course of treatment is 15 sessions.
Electrophoresis is the most popular procedure because it helps medications penetrate most deeply into the sinus tissue. For children, external treatment is performed on the sinuses.
For adults, endonasal electrophoresis is most often performed. To do this, take gauze swabs that have previously been moistened with a medicinal substance and insert them into the lower nasal passages. Then the cotton swabs are covered with an electrode, secured with a bandage, and the second electrode is placed on the back of the head. The duration of one session is on average 15 minutes. Course of treatment - sessions.
Electromagnetic waves as well as pulsed current
Good results are achieved by procedures using microwave and UHF. Thanks to such sessions, swelling decreases and enzymes are actively produced. On average, the event time is 10 minutes. The course of treatment is 12 sessions.
If the disease occurs with severe pain, then the use of pulsed currents has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Electrodes are placed on the affected sinuses. The duration of this effect is about 7-8 minutes. The procedures take place daily, the course of treatment lasts days.
Contraindications to physiotherapy
Physiotherapy methods are constantly being improved. It is thanks to this that the number of contraindications has sharply decreased.
- temperature above 37.0 degrees
- malignant neoplasms or suspicions of them
- cardiovascular diseases
- hypertension
- current intolerance
- presence of metal objects
- pregnancy
Before prescribing physiotherapy, the patient must undergo a thorough examination. Even such a seemingly harmless procedure as mud therapy can cause an increase in tumor.
Physiotherapy methods such as steam inhalation and nasal rinsing with saline solution do not require special equipment. To implement them, you only need medicinal herbs and sea salt. But such procedures also need to be carried out correctly and it is advisable to consult a doctor before carrying out them.
In no case should you ignore the symptoms of sinusitis. If you notice the first signs, you should immediately consult a doctor. If this is not done, the disease will enter the chronic stage and treatment will take twice as long. Remember that any disease is easier to treat at an early stage of development.

Physiotherapy for rhinitis
Rhinitis is divided into acute, chronic and vasomotor. Acute rhinitis (acute runny nose) is an acute inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa. Chronic rhinitis (chronic runny nose) is a chronic inflammation (non-infectious degenerative process) of the nasal mucosa. Vasomotor rhinitis is a general disease of the body with a predominant local manifestation of pathology in the nasal cavity in the form of paroxysmal sneezing, runny nose and difficulty in nasal breathing.
These diseases are treated in outpatient clinics and at home using conservative methods. Physiotherapy for rhinitis is based on the use of phototherapy (ultraviolet and laser irradiation of the nasal passages) and UHF therapy of the nasal area.
Ultraviolet irradiation of the mucous membrane of the nasal passages is indicated for acute rhinitis and exacerbation of chronic rhinitis with the presence of a runny nose. For these purposes, the light therapy devices ON-7 (formerly UGN, four-tube group ultraviolet irradiator for the nasopharynx) and BOP-4 (bactericidal portable irradiator, one tube, formerly OKUF-5M) are used - sources of integral ultraviolet radiation (length nm waves, from short-wave to long-wave spectrum of the ultraviolet part of the optical spectrum of EMR).
UV irradiation of the nasal mucosa in patients with these forms of rhinitis is carried out throughout the day, once a day in the morning. The exposure time in each nasal passage is 0.5 - 2 minutes.
UHF therapy
UHF therapy of the nasal area is carried out for all forms of rhinitis using UHF-30, UHF-66, “Undaterm” or “Miniterm” devices only in the athermal mode of exposure (device output power when exposed to no more than 15 W). For a course of treatment for acute rhinitis, no more than 3 daily procedures are recommended; for chronic and vasomotor rhinitis, daily UHF procedures are carried out once a day in the morning.
Laser therapy
If the procedure of ultraviolet irradiation and ultrasound therapy, as a rule, is carried out in the physiotherapy room of the clinic, then laser (magnetic laser) procedures for various forms of rhinitis can be performed on the patient at the workplace and at home.
For this purpose, devices are used that generate radiation from the near-infrared part of the optical spectrum (wavelength 0.8 - 0.9 microns), in a continuous or pulsed mode of generating this radiation. It is advisable to carry out the procedures using devices whose emitters have an impact area of about 1 cm 2 using the contact method. There are no significant differences in the methods of laser (magnetic laser) therapy for certain forms of rhinitis.
The method of influence is contact, stable.
Fields of influence: on the right and left, one field per area of the wings of the nose. PPM NLImW/cm 2 . Induction of magnetic attachment T.
Radiation modulation frequency: in the presence of a runny nose, the first procedures are carried out with a frequency of 80 Hz, all subsequent procedures until the end of the course of exposure are carried out with a frequency of 10 Hz.
The exposure time per field is 5 minutes. Duration of treatment: for acute rhinitis, daily procedures (the first two days, procedures can be performed 2 times a day with an interval of 1 hour), for chronic and vasomotor rhinitis, procedures daily 1 time per day in the morning (up to 12 hours).
Device "Azor-IK"
The experience of physiotherapists testifies to the sufficient effectiveness of the use of information-wave effects using the Azor-IR device for various forms of rhinitis, especially for self-treatment by the patient in various conditions as prescribed and under the supervision of the attending physician.

Treatment of rhinitis and nasal congestion with physiotherapy and its types
It is not recommended to treat a runny nose using one method. Modern medicine offers patients a large number of physiotherapeutic techniques for vasomotor rhinitis. They have proven themselves well along with the use of medications. To achieve the effect, sufficient attention is paid to physiotherapy.
Types of physiotherapy
Various methods are used to influence the vessels of the mucous membranes of the nasal passages. The most effective are:
- Laser treatment.
- Ultrasound.
- Exposure to ultraviolet rays (UVR).
- Inhalations.
- Electrophoresis.
- Magnetotherapy.
- Acupuncture.
Treatment with physical factors complements drug therapy. Their action is aimed at reducing swelling and the manifestation of allergies, normalizing vascular tone.
Using a laser
All types of vasomotor rhinitis are amenable to laser treatment. The device helps improve transcapillary metabolic processes in the mucous membranes that line the nasal passages.
Laser therapy is an additional treatment. The dosage should not exceed the specified amount. At the same time, it has a stimulating and anti-inflammatory effect.
Physiotherapy procedures using this method do not last more than 10 days. In some cases, a week is enough. The attending physician advises attending procedures before lunch, preferably in the morning, no more than once a day. Otolaryngologists claim that it is useful to combine laser treatment with laser puncture.
Ultrasound
Exposure to ultra-high frequencies will help alleviate the course of the disease and eliminate unpleasant symptoms. As practice shows, ultrasound speeds up recovery. The waves penetrate into the source of inflammation, healing tissues and relieving swelling. The session lasts no more than 15 minutes and is repeated for 5–7 days. As in the previous case, it is recommended to visit a physical therapist in the morning.
Irradiation of the nasal passages with ultraviolet rays is a quick way to overcome a runny nose. The light therapy machine used for treatment has a wavelength between 230 and 265 nm.
The procedure cannot be done for more than 5 days. It is preferable to carry out treatment in the morning. The duration of the procedure depends on the severity of the patient’s condition and, as a rule, does not exceed 2 minutes.
Inhalations
Inhalation therapy occurs using a nebulizer, a device specially designed for this purpose. Helps achieve stable remission in a short period of time. The inhaler delivers the drug to the site of inflammation, bypassing the systemic circulation. Due to the fact that the sprayed drug is drawn in through the nose, this promotes rapid absorption.
The inhalation intake is calculated by the attending physician independently after examining the patient, taking into account the severity of the clinic and the advanced state of the disease.
Electrophoresis
For nasal congestion, it is useful and effective to use this treatment method. Calcium-diphenhydramine or thiamine is chosen as the active drug. Electrophoresis is not suitable for every patient. People often complain of increased sensitivity of the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages. In this case, electrophoresis is used after the inhalation procedure using a novocaine solution.
The course of treatment with electrophoresis is carried out over 1–2 weeks. Electrophoresis cannot be used for more than 10 minutes in one session. The duration of treatment is determined by the attending physician. If a person feels discomfort during the procedure, it is better to stop it.
Magnet treatment
Despite the fact that magnetic therapy is popular in many countries, debate about the effectiveness of this method of physiotherapy for rhinitis continues. The magnet stimulates the body to fight the inflammatory process. The static magnetic field that is created affects metabolic processes, the nervous and immune systems.
Acupuncture
There is another way to combat vasomotor rhinitis. The acupuncture procedure is no less effective. It begins with a complex effect on membranes. The procedure is dangerous, so it must only be performed by a specialist. The patient may be frightened by the appearance of the needle, but if he completes the treatment, nasal breathing will be restored.
Needles are inserted into the facial and segmental points. The duration of acupuncture is based on the general condition of the patient. In some cases, the clinical picture may not be clearly expressed. This will require several sessions. In severe and advanced cases, the patient must undergo a full course of treatment, which is at least 10 days.
All methods have advantages and disadvantages; if one person tolerates inhalation or acupuncture well, then for another these procedures can become torture. Most techniques are recommended for patients suffering from a chronic disease or in recovery. Therefore, only a physiotherapist prescribes treatment.
Treatment information
Treatment with physiotherapeutic methods will be in vain if the doctor does not establish the cause that caused the disease. The lack of adequate therapy will lead to frequent manifestations of the inflammatory process. As a result, the disease will spread not only to the paranasal sinuses, but also to the middle ear. If vasomotor rhinitis is not treated, it can develop into hypertrophic rhinitis, which is characterized by tissue proliferation in the nasal cavity.
The impact of physiotherapeutic procedures for rhinitis helps speed up the healing process. If you strictly follow the doctor's instructions and complete the course to the end, the person's condition should improve.
Despite positive patient outcomes, physical therapy is considered by modern medicine only as a complementary treatment. In addition, unconventional methods are used.
Aroma and hirudotherapy are useful. Balneological treatment benefits the body. If you have the opportunity to go to a sanatorium, it is better not to delay. Various activities taken together will help you forget about an unpleasant runny nose, and in some cases completely heal the body. Health is the most important thing in the life of every person, so it must be protected.
I didn’t even know that there were so many physiotherapy procedures for treating a runny nose. Since the good old days, I was accustomed to ultraviolet radiation and inhalations. By the way, there is an effective remedy for chronic runny nose, Loromax, which always helps me out.
