As is known, inhalation in medicine refers to one of the methods of treating various diseases, which consists in the patient inhaling medicinal substances. Inhalations are different. Most often, steam inhalations are used in everyday life, when a medicinal substance is added to boiling water, after which the patient breathes in the resulting steam. Also in ENT practice, for atrophy or dryness of the mucous membranes, oil inhalations are often used, which involve the patient inhaling heated essential oils. There are also dry inhalations, in which the sprayed drug is first dissolved in water, after which this solution is mixed with dry and hot air. In this case, the water evaporates and ultimately only dry medicine enters the patient’s lungs. Finally, it remains to mention wet inhalations, in which the liquid with the medicine turns into an aerosol, or, simply put, into a fog.

It is precisely in the latter case that one cannot do without the use of a nebulizer, which is a special device for inhalation, based on the principle of using an ultra-fine dispersed spray of a medicinal substance. The name of such a device comes from the Latin word “nebula”, translated as fog or cloud. Wet inhalations using a nebulizer are used in the treatment of very severe conditions such as cystic fibrosis or bronchial asthma, as well as for the treatment of other common diseases. This refers to almost any disease of the respiratory tract, from bronchitis and laryngitis to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, in pediatrics, nebulizers are in demand in the treatment of false croup (also known as stenosing acute laryngotracheitis), obstructive bronchitis and bronchial asthma. Also, a nebulizer can be used in the treatment of ENT diseases, such as a runny nose, enlarged adenoids or sore throat, but in this case, inhalations are just one of the components of complex therapy.

Modern industry produces both stationary nebulizers, used to treat a large number of patients in various medical institutions, and portable devices, which are in demand by asthmatics for independently preventing and relieving an attack of bronchial asthma.

As mentioned above, the principle of operation of a nebulizer is based on dispersed spraying of a drug, which is then supplied to the patient through a mask or breathing tube. As for inhalations using a nebulizer, there are much fewer dangers, and even those are associated only with violation of the recommendations of a medical specialist or technical rules for using this device.

  • particles with a size of 2 to 5 microns are deposited in the lower respiratory tract;
  • and finally, particles ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 microns are deposited in the alveoli.

Ultrasonic nebulizers have such disadvantages as the inability to regulate the particle size of the drug used, for which antibiotics and hormonal drugs cannot be used. The latter feature is due to the fact that such drugs disintegrate under the influence of ultrasound. As for the advantages of ultrasonic inhalers, we should note their portability, lack of noise during operation, as well as their relatively low cost (their prices start at 2,000 rubles).

The main disadvantage of using mesh nebulizers is their high price (from 7,600 rubles and above), but this is compensated by the lack of noise during operation, the ability to use any drugs for inhalation, including antibiotics and hormonal agents, as well as the portability of the device. Today in Russia you can buy mesh nebulizers from three companies: “B.Well” – 2500 rubles, “Omron” – 7600 rubles and “Pari” rubles. Disinfection can also be accomplished by a 30-minute treatment with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, a 10-minute treatment with a 0.4% Septodor solution, or a 60-minute treatment with a 3% chloramine solution. In this case, you must remember to thoroughly clean all disinfected parts with the cleaning solution itself.
