For this reason, pregnant women often develop a cough, which is a symptom of some illness or allergy. Treatment of cough is simply necessary, because it can have negative consequences. However, this treatment must be correct, because not all cough remedies can be used while expecting a child.
Cough during pregnancy: what is it?
Cough is a reflex reaction to irritation of the respiratory organs. If a cough appears, it means that something is wrong in the body, and you just need to see a doctor about it. We usually perceive cough as a symptom of colds, but this is not the only cause of cough in pregnant women.
Causes
- acute respiratory infections or acute respiratory viral infections; and what to do when a cough does not go away after an acute respiratory viral infection is indicated in this article.
- Bronchitis;
- Pneumonia;
- ENT diseases;
- Cardiovascular diseases;
- Allergy; What is the treatment for nasal congestion allergies using folk remedies is indicated in this article.
- Gastrointestinal disorders;
- Stress;
- Smoking. From this article you can find out whether smoking is possible during a sore throat.
It is very important to determine the cause, because treatment will depend on it.
Types and characteristics of the disease
It is customary to distinguish two types of cough: dry and wet. When dry, there is no separation of sputum from the respiratory system. If its cause is viruses or bacteria, then this type of cough can be more dangerous, since the pathogens and their waste products are not removed from the bronchi and lungs. A dry cough usually occurs at the beginning of the disease. Gradually it turns into wet, in which the woman can cough up, and with sputum the body gets rid of pathogens.
If the cough remains dry for a long time and its character does not change, then it may be allergic in nature. In this case, the treatment should be completely different.
What to do when a baby has a wet cough without fever is indicated in the article.
Coughing attacks, which can develop with certain diseases, are especially dangerous. A paroxysmal cough causes significant tension in the abdominal muscles and spasms of the uterine muscles, which is unsafe for the unborn child.
The course of pregnancy is usually divided into trimesters, each of them has its own characteristics. Cough and its treatment during pregnancy also have features depending on the period.
First trimester
During this period, immunity decreases especially strongly, while at the same time the development of the main organs and systems of the unborn baby occurs. This is a very responsible and dangerous period. It is in the first trimester that a woman is most susceptible to developing colds and infectious diseases. These may be diseases of the ENT organs, pneumonia, bronchitis. Cases of allergies are common during this period of pregnancy. All this causes a cough.
So, in the first trimester, a pregnant woman faces a triple danger:
- Firstly, the diseases themselves threaten the normal development of the fetus.
- Secondly, a symptom such as cough is dangerous due to muscle strain and increased uterine tone.
- Thirdly, during this period, the use of many medications is extremely dangerous for the fetus.
Chamomile and sage are popular folk remedies that can be used in the first trimester. However, it is better to consult a doctor before use.
In the first trimester of pregnancy, you should not take any potent drugs. Treatment should be gentle. This can be inhalation of herbal decoctions or essential oils and taking these decoctions orally, compresses and wraps, and other cough recipes at home. The choice of herbs should only be made by a doctor, as he can take into account their side effects and contraindications.
Most often, chamomile, string, and sage are used in the first trimester. Essential oils: mint, eucalyptus. For a compress, it is good to use cabbage leaves smeared with honey.
Second trimester
It means weeks of pregnancy. This period is calmer for women. Her body has already adapted to the new condition, so her immunity becomes higher, and the risk of colds and infections decreases. However, stress, gastrointestinal diseases, heart diseases, and allergic reactions can still cause coughing.
The unborn child is already a little stronger: its organs have already formed and are only continuing to develop, in addition, the fetus is already under the protection of the placenta. Therefore, viral infections are no longer so scary, and during this period a wider range of remedies can be used for treatment.
The most dangerous are in the second trimester and 14 weeks. Coughing during this period can lead to malnutrition of the fetus and oxygen starvation.
Dangers of the second trimester:
- Fetoplacental insufficiency,
- Risk of premature birth
- Improper formation of the nervous system and bone tissue.
All these dangers can be caused by a common cough if it is not treated or treated incorrectly.
Third trimester
The last trimester of pregnancy is the least dangerous for the fetus in terms of disease and drug exposure. The placenta is already aging and becoming less permeable to both pathogens and medications. However, mother’s illnesses accelerate the aging of the placenta, which means they worsen the nutrition of the fetus in the last weeks of development. Cough is a symptom. Most often in the third trimester, it is caused by a cold. Treatment during this period is individual, since it is necessary to take into account many factors of the condition of the woman, the fetus and the course of the previous weeks of pregnancy.
Cough treatment
The most important thing in treating pregnant women is not to harm the fetus. Self-medication is unacceptable.
Many drugs are strictly contraindicated. This prohibition is especially strict in the early stages, it is based on the fact that these drugs can cause severe damage to the development of the child. Also, not all medical procedures that are usually prescribed for the treatment of various diseases are suitable for pregnant women.
What pregnant women should not do
- Antibiotics;
- Cough remedies such as Linkas, Codelac, ACC, Bronholitin, Pertussin;
- Inhalations at high temperatures;
- Mustard plasters;
- Hot foot baths;
- Physiotherapy.
Tablets and lozenges
Any cough medicines for a pregnant woman are chosen to minimize the risk to the unborn child.
Solid dosage forms include tablets, lozenges and lozenges. One of the most common cough remedies during pregnancy is Mucaltin (marshmallow extract). In addition, you can use extracts of other herbs that come in tablet form.
For pregnant women, extracts of coltsfoot and plantain are considered effective and at the same time relatively safe.
Cough tablets with the medicinal plant Thermopsis can also be used by pregnant women
Pregnant women are also prescribed thermopsis cough tablets with soda, which are usually called “Cough Cure.” This plant has a good expectorant effect. The tablets also contain sodium bicarbonate, which thins mucus. However, such tablets must be taken with caution and taking into account individual characteristics, because large doses of thermopsis can cause a miscarriage.
Of the drugs that suppress the cough reflex, Tusuprex tablets are allowed.
From the 14th week of pregnancy, if necessary, tablets and dragees containing butamirate can be prescribed: Intussin, Stoptussin.
Lozenges and lozenges are convenient because they not only help with a cough, but also soften a sore throat and improve nasal breathing during a runny nose. Most often, such preparations contain extracts of sage, eucalyptus, plantain, and chamomile. This could be: Travisil, Dr. Theiss.
Syrups
Syrups may be prescribed to treat cough. They may be based on the same herbs as in the tablets, for example, marshmallow. The following products are considered safe for pregnant women:
You can find recommendations for treating cough in pregnant women with Gedelix (follow the link - instructions for Gedelix drops), Bronchicum or Sinekod. However, the manufacturers of these drugs warn in their instructions that there is not enough clinical practice for this. Therefore, the doctor decides on the advisability of prescribing drugs in each specific case.
Consequences and complications
A normal cough, which seems quite harmless, can lead to complications - miscarriage, premature birth
Both the cough itself and the disease that caused it can be dangerous. A common cold without proper treatment can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, which require serious treatment.
A cough, especially a severe paroxysmal cough, causes tension in the muscles of the abdomen and uterus, which can cause an increase in its tone and an increase in the risk of miscarriage.
Also, straining when coughing can provoke placental abruption. This threatens premature birth and hormonal imbalance.

What cough remedies are the best and most effective for a pregnant woman?
Pregnancy is a period when a woman pays special attention to her own health and the health of her long-awaited future baby.
During the autumn-winter and winter-spring periods, characterized by changes in air temperature, frequent cold winds and rains, unstable air temperature in apartments and industrial premises, there is a high risk of colds, known as acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI).
The weakened immunity of the expectant mother makes her especially susceptible to diseases. One of the most common symptoms of an unhealthy condition is a cough. Let's try to figure out what effective cough remedies during pregnancy should be used by the expectant mother.
Which cough remedies are effective and safe for pregnant women?
During pregnancy, many medications are unsafe and are banned or prescribed for severe forms of the disease only in cases where the benefit of the drug will be greater than its harm.
This group of drugs not recommended for pregnant women includes the following:
- alcohol-containing infusions, drops;
- medications containing components of a narcotic mechanism of action (for example, pregnant women should not take medications with codeine when coughing);
- antibiotics;
- analgesics;
- aspirin.
Among the safest for pregnant women are the following:
- products developed on the basis of herbal ingredients;
- topical preparations.
To cure a cough quickly and have the least harmful effect on the unborn child, you need to know about the stages of the course of an infectious disease accompanied by a cough:
- the stage of the appearance of a viral cough, which is dry;
- stage of development of a wet cough.
Initially, the following types of medications are included in the complex of therapeutic effects:
- drugs to strengthen the immune system;
- antitussive medications;
- antimicrobial drugs.
Immunostimulants play an important role in helping the body defend against and fight infection.
New generation drugs are developed so that they are the most effective and least safe for pregnant women.
The first place in terms of the combination of these qualities is occupied by Grippferon - drops that are instilled into the nose, colorless and odorless, developed on the basis of human interferon. It is an immunomodulator with antiviral properties. Grippferon can be used at any stage of pregnancy. It does not enter the gastrointestinal tract and acts quickly due to absorption into the mucous membranes of the nasal passages.
Grippferon is prescribed at the first symptoms, when the cough has just appeared, and for preventive purposes.
Viferon in the form of a gel or ointment is recommended without restrictions. The advantage of Viferon is the possibility of using gels or ointments for application to the mucous membranes of the nasal passages. The components of the gel (ointment) quickly penetrate the mucous membranes, and from there into the blood and spread throughout the body, starting to work in the first half hour after use.
An excellent remedy, but only starting from the 15th week, is Anaferon, also developed on the basis of human interferon. Before taking the drug, you should study the description of the drug and recommendations for use to identify any individual restrictions on use.
The best cough remedies during pregnancy
Antitussives are aimed at suppressing the cough reflex, which can cause headaches and complications during pregnancy.
Libexin is made on the basis of prenoxdiazine hydrochloride and is indicated for pregnant women as a remedy for nonproductive cough of high intensity and frequency, especially if it occurs at night.
To relieve coughing attacks that can harm the unborn child, other effective means are used:
Bronchicum is a herbal remedy that is prescribed for debilitating dry cough. This medicine is available in the form of syrup, gel for rubbing, emulsion for inhalation, etc.
Sinekod is an expectorant based on butamirate, produced in the form of drops, dragees, syrup and aimed at suppressing a severe dry cough.
Hexapneumin is a combination drug produced in tablet form, syrup and rectal suppositories. This medicine in syrup form is recommended for expectant mothers.
The listed antitussives can be used if there are obvious indications for this only from the 2nd trimester.
Effective cough expectorants during pregnancy
To get rid of a productive (wet) cough most effectively, mucolytic and expectorant drugs are prescribed during pregnancy.
A reliable and safe cough expectorant for pregnant women - Mucaltin - tablets based on marshmallow root extract. Pregnant women are allowed to take a modern expectorant - Doctor Theiss syrup based on extracts of plantain leaves, which has a slight mint smell, quite thick and opaque. It is allowed at all stages, including the first trimester.
Eucabal syrup is also an effective remedy.
Among homeopathic remedies, a modern effective development stands out - Stodal syrup, which is recommended for both dry and wet coughs and is safe at any time.
Compositions made from extracts of medicinal herbs can also be used as an expectorant:
- collection of several types of breast milk (sold in a pharmacy);
- Gerbion;
- syrup “Doctor Mom”, etc.
From the second trimester, for both types of cough, you can use marshmallow syrup, which thins and removes mucous formations from the bronchi, has a calming effect, and relieves inflammation.
In addition to medications, folk remedies accelerate the course of the disease by promoting the removal of mucous formations:
- warm milk (can be with figs);
- tea with raspberries;
- lemon juice added to warm water;
- heated cabbage-honey composition;
- warm carrot juice;
- mixture of honey and onions;
- mixture of honey with garlic juice, etc.

The best cough sprays during pregnancy
During the course of the disease, it is necessary to destroy microbes that have spread over the entire surface of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx.
Sprays work well for this.
The best combination of activity and safety are modern products - Tantum-verde and its analogues - Oralcept, Tenflex, Tantum-rose - sprays based on benzydamine hydrochloride, which have a mint scent.
The following sprays have proven themselves to be effective and safe:
- Chlorophyllipt is a spray based on eucalyptus extract and essential oils that relieves irritation of the mucous membranes, eliminates microbial flora in the nasopharynx cavity and has an anti-inflammatory effect;
- Hexoral is a hexethidine-based spray that reduces irritation and sore throat, kills germs and acts against inflammation and swelling;
- Cameton is an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic spray that includes several components (camphor, levomenthol, chlorobutanol hemihydrate, eucalyptus essential oils);
- Theraflu LAR, Stopangin (from the 2nd trimester).
- the active components of the spray are instantly distributed over the entire surface of the mucous membranes in areas of accumulation of microbial flora;
- the spray acts on sources of infection even in the most inaccessible places;
- active ingredients have a calming effect, eliminate sore throat and dry throat;
- the components of the spray alleviate the patient’s condition by reducing swelling of the mucous membranes;
- The spray not only has an antiseptic effect, but also reduces the intensity of the inflammatory process.
The ingredients of the sprays practically do not enter the bloodstream, which makes this method of treatment safe.
Effective cough rinses during pregnancy
Antiseptic solutions have a noticeable antimicrobial effect when regularly rinsed. This complex procedure:
- locally affects infectious agents in places where they accumulate;
- washes away mucous formations;
- soothes unpleasant sensations (“tickling” in the throat, pain when swallowing, etc.).
The most effective and safe solutions are:
The best decoctions of medicinal plants for regular rinsing are:
- a mixture of dry eucalyptus leaf, sage herb and calendula petals;
- a mixture of dry raspberry leaf, medicinal chamomile, coltsfoot leaves, clover inflorescences, pine buds;
- infusion of ginger root in low concentration, etc.
In addition to these, rinses with a solution of sea salt are prescribed.
Rinses are prepared using warm boiled water and are used six to eight times a day.
The best cough lozenges and lozenges during pregnancy
Antiseptic preparations intended for resorption have an active effect on disease pathogens: tablets, lozenges, sucking candies.
From a wide range of lollipops and lozenges, it is better to choose plant-based products (with chamomile, sage extract, sage, plantain juice, etc.).
Plant-based lollipops are considered the best - Dr. Theiss.
Tantum verde lozenges are safe and effective.
We can recommend a safe cough remedy for a pregnant woman - Lizobact, lozenges. You can use time-tested Pectusin.
Use with caution Septolete. Despite the simplicity of the drug form, it has a complex effect:
- destroys microbes;
- reduces unpleasant and painful sensations in the throat;
- reduces swelling in the nasal passages and throat;
- moisturizes;
- suppresses the “urge to cough.”
The number of lozenges and lozenges should not exceed that prescribed by the doctor.
After resorption, it is not recommended to eat, drink liquids or talk for half an hour.
Effective inhalation products
Tested by time and the experience of generations, the best remedy for cough during pregnancy is inhalation.
This is a procedure with several advantages:
- has an antimicrobial effect that has a long-lasting effect on microbes and bacteria in the most inaccessible places;
- produces a calming effect, relieving pain and discomfort in the throat;
- reduces swelling of the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx.
Inhalations should be started immediately after the cough appears. Sometimes inhalations help so well that no more medications are needed.
The following drugs in solution can be used for inhalation:
Inhalations can be carried out using medicinal formulations of pharmacological production or based on natural remedies:
- mineral water;
- saline;
- honey solution;
- herbal infusions (chamomile, calendula, sage, etc.).
The best inhalation products have hypoallergenic properties and a strong antimicrobial effect:
- infusion of eucalyptus leaves;
- infusion of pine needles;
- infusion of St. John's wort leaves;
- linden leaves and flowers, etc.
These compounds combine safety and a range of useful properties.
In case of a mild course of the disease, inhalations are carried out once or twice a day; during a dry, obsessive cough, the number of inhalations can be increased to five to six times. Each procedure lasts from five to ten minutes. After inhalation, it is not recommended to eat, drink liquids, or talk.
Inhalations can be organized in different ways:
- from improvised means (saucepan, kettle with hot medicinal composition);
- using a plastic inhaler with a hot solution (infusion);
- using a nebulizer.

Conclusion
Safe and effective treatment is guaranteed if the woman fulfills two main conditions:
- immediately consulted a doctor without the stage of self-medication and the hope that it would “go away on its own”;
- Immediately after the doctor's prescriptions, she began treatment.
The best cough remedies will help you quickly overcome the disease with the combined use of drugs with different mechanisms of action, as well as with the simultaneous intake of vitamin and microelement complexes.
During the period of illness, you need rest and limiting contact with other people in order to prevent re-infection or complications.

Cough tablets during pregnancy: the difficulty of choosing
Cough is one of the symptoms of a respiratory viral infection. During pregnancy, colds are more severe because the immune system is weakened and cannot fully resist viruses. Cough tablets during pregnancy are chosen taking into account their safety, reliability and lack of side effects. Women who are expecting a child are faced with the question of the possibility of using certain antitussives. Let's try to understand the question of what cough tablets and mixtures are available during pregnancy.
Features of choosing cough tablets during pregnancy
When choosing a medicine to treat a pregnant woman, you should be guided by the following principles:
- Safety. Medicines must be equally harmless to mother and fetus. They should not be embryotoxic or have teratogenic or fetotoxic effects. In addition, medications should not increase the tone of the uterus, so as not to provoke premature birth or termination of pregnancy. Also excluded are drugs that exhibit cardio-, hepato- and nephrotoxicity. The instructions for cough drops should indicate that they are safe for use during pregnancy.
- Efficiency. The number of drugs that can be used by expectant mothers is limited. This confuses the doctor when prescribing treatment - it is necessary to choose 1-2 remedies that are most suitable in this case. Therefore, cough medicine should be as effective as possible.
- No side effects. Cough tablets should not cause adverse reactions such as bronchospasm, provoke allergic reactions, affect hormonal levels or cause contractions of the smooth muscles of the uterus.
- Inability to penetrate the blood-placental barrier. That is, the active substance should not enter the bloodstream of the fetus through the placenta, so as not to have a negative effect on it.
Treatment of acute respiratory viral infection begins with choosing a drug that best fits the description given above.
What drugs are allowed
Let's look at which cough tablets are allowed during pregnancy, depending on the trimester.
In 1st trimester
In the first trimester of pregnancy, hormonal changes occur in the woman's body. During this period, the main organs of the embryo are formed, so it is important that the drug chosen for treatment does not have an embryotoxic effect.
Allowed cough tablets in the first trimester:
- Mukaltin. Has an expectorant effect. It is safe at any stage of pregnancy because it is of plant origin. Increases mucus secretion. Due to this, sputum discharge improves, so the drug can be prescribed for dry cough. In addition, Mucaltin has an anti-inflammatory effect. Improves mucociliary clearance and accelerates the passage of sputum through the respiratory tract, thereby improving coughing. The only contraindication to taking Mucaltin is individual intolerance. Read more about the use of Mucaltin during pregnancy →
- Cough tablets Dr. Theiss with sage extract and vitamin C. Due to the essential oils of sage, which has an anti-inflammatory and disinfectant effect, sputum thins and its viscosity decreases. The presence of vitamin C additionally stimulates antiviral immunity. Contraindications for use are individual sensitivity and diabetes. The instructions for Dr. Theiss cough lozenges contain no contraindications for use during pregnancy.
- Sinupret is a homeopathic drug. The composition includes several medicines that exhibit a complex effect - gentian root, primrose flowers with calyxes, sorrel herb, elderberry flowers and verbena herb. Together they exhibit secretolytic, anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effects. Herbal extracts suppress the proliferation of viruses, including influenza, parainfluenza and other respiratory pathogens. While taking the drug, sputum becomes more liquid and its discharge improves. Like other cough remedies, Sinupret tablets, although safe for pregnant women, require a doctor's prescription.
Taking any other drugs that are not included in this list is possible after consultation with a specialist.
In the 2nd trimester
During this period, the list of approved drugs is expanding. Many medications that could not be used in the 1st trimester are allowed in the 2nd.
List of approved medications:
- Ambroxol. Shows mucolytic effect. Stimulates the synthesis of surfactant and regulates bronchopulmonary secretion. Due to this, the mucus becomes less thick, which facilitates its better removal during coughing. The drug is well tolerated and approved for use in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Available in the form of tablets and syrup. Prescribed 1 tablet/tablespoon 3 times a day.
- Fluditek. Mucolytic and mucoregulating drug. Regulates the ratio of sialomucin and fucomucin, which helps normalize the viscosity of sputum for its better discharge. Approved for use in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.
- Bromhexine belongs to the group of mucolytics. Increases the volume of sputum, makes it less viscous and improves coughing. Bromhexine is a precursor to the active form of Ambroxol. Therefore, the indications and contraindications for its use are identical.
In the 3rd trimester
The list of cough tablets in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy is wider. The tablets should not have a fetotoxic effect and cause uterine contractions.
In the 3rd trimester, it is allowed to use any drugs that are indicated in the 1st and 2nd trimester.
Special instructions for certain drugs
Next, we will consider cough medications that are prescribed if the benefit to the mother is higher than the potential risk to the fetus. These medications are prescribed only by the attending physician, after weighing all the pros and cons. They do not have a toxic effect on the fetus or the mother, but the lack of research limits their use.
- Acetylcysteine (ACC) or medications based on it. Prescribed for coughs with mucous sputum that is difficult to clear. Used only as prescribed by a doctor if the benefit to the mother is higher than the potential risk to the fetus.
- Linkas. Complex drug for the treatment of cough. It is not recommended to use during pregnancy due to possible adverse reactions, but may be used as directed by a doctor.
- Mucitus (erdostein). The studies did not reveal any pathological effects on the development of the embryo or fetus, however, it is not recommended to prescribe in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, and from the 2nd trimester - only as prescribed by a doctor.
- Milistan. A combined cough medicine containing ambroxol and acetylcysteine. It is strictly contraindicated in the 1st trimester of pregnancy; in the 2nd or 3rd trimester it can be used strictly as prescribed by a doctor.
- Overslept. Available in the form of effervescent tablets and lozenges. The drug contains dry extract of ivy leaves, which has anti-inflammatory, secretolytic and mucolytic effects. Due to the content of glycosidic saponins, it has an antispasmodic effect on the bronchial tree. There are no contraindications to the use of this drug during pregnancy, but it should be used only as prescribed by a doctor, after weighing the risk/benefit relationship.
What pills are strictly prohibited?
The use of the following drugs is completely contraindicated for use at any stage of pregnancy:
- Tablets based on licorice root. Liquorice (licorice root) is contraindicated at any stage of pregnancy. It changes hormonal levels and increases the amount of estrogen. This can cause miscarriage or premature birth. Any combination cough medicine that contains even a small amount of licorice is also contraindicated.
- Tablets containing anise oil.
- Bronchipret, which contains thyme and ivy extract. Not recommended for use in any trimester of pregnancy due to lack of clinical studies.
- Prospan, made on the basis of liquid ivy extract. It has antispasmodic, antitussive and mucolytic effects. Used for coughs with sputum that is difficult to clear.
- Codeine and drugs based on it. Depresses the respiratory center in the medulla oblongata.
- Erespal or Inspiron. Not recommended for use at any time. However, if pregnancy occurs already during treatment, this is not a reason to terminate it.
- Antitussin. The composition contains thermopsis grass and sodium bicarbonate. It has a good mucolytic effect, but is contraindicated during pregnancy.
- Cough tablets during pregnancy with thermopsis are strictly contraindicated, since pachycarpine contained in the herb causes contraction of the uterine muscles.
Treatment of ARVI and its complications during pregnancy is a difficult task. On the one hand, it is necessary to choose an effective remedy that will help cope with the disease, on the other hand, not to harm the fetus. The drugs should not negatively affect the formation of the embryo, placenta, or growth of fetal organs.
It should be remembered that self-medication can harm the health of the mother and fetus; only an examination by a doctor can prevent the development of complications.

6 ways to treat cough during pregnancy
Everyone is familiar with a cough: it is one of the first manifestations of an acute respiratory viral infection or a common cold. A cough may not cause much discomfort and go away quickly, or it may be quite painful and greatly worsen the condition of the expectant mother. How to treat cough during pregnancy? What usual methods of getting rid of cough during pregnancy will have to be abandoned?
Yulia Lukina
General practitioner, Moscow
Cough is a reflex reaction of the body and a symptom of many diseases. Initially, the function of the cough reaction is protective - to remove pathogenic microorganisms with sputum.
Typically, the cough reflex occurs as a result of irritation of nerve endings, the so-called cough receptors, in the respiratory tract. The cough can be rare and frequent, dry and wet, constant and periodic, painful and painless, strong and weak.
During pregnancy, cough is usually caused by either acute respiratory infections (ARVI, acute respiratory infections) or the presence of chronic diseases (for example, bronchial asthma, ENT pathology, etc.). Typical conditions for pregnancy that provoke cough are various allergic reactions, the susceptibility to which in expectant mothers increases due to the peculiarities of the functioning of the immune system, toxicosis (in the first trimester) and heartburn, which often occurs in late pregnancy. In more rare cases, the causes of cough in pregnant women are neurogenic (psychogenic) reactions, diseases of the middle ear, gastrointestinal tract (it also has cough receptors), cardiovascular system (due to swelling of the respiratory tract mucosa in heart failure), thyroid gland (usually due to mechanical compression).
How to treat cough in pregnant women?
It should be noted right away that the treatment of cough is aimed at eliminating this symptom, that is, symptomatic. This approach is certainly not the most effective. The most effective way to get rid of a cough is to eliminate its cause, of course, if possible. Thus, in case of infectious-inflammatory processes it is necessary to fight the infection, in case of allergies - to look for and eliminate the allergen, in the presence of chronic diseases - to treat them, trying to achieve normalization of the condition.
Agree, it often happens that, having caught a cold and contracting a virus, we do not run to the doctor, but use the usual methods that have been tested in practice. However, self-medication during pregnancy should be excluded: a doctor should prescribe any therapy. Many medications are prohibited for use in pregnant women, and there are many medications that cannot be taken together due to the high risk of various drug complications, and this also applies to seemingly harmless herbal remedies. In addition, it is necessary to first establish the cause of the cough, that is, make the correct diagnosis, on which treatment will depend.
In pregnant women (as well as in everyone else), cough is most often a symptom of a cold. Expectant mothers experience a natural decrease in immunity (this is how nature takes care of preserving pregnancy), resulting in an increased vulnerability to various infectious diseases, especially during the season of colds, acute respiratory viral infections, and acute respiratory infections.
The most vulnerable and dangerous is the first trimester of pregnancy, when, against the background of a natural decrease in immunity, all the child’s organ systems are formed, which imposes very strict restrictions on the use of many medications during this period. In the second and third trimester, after the formation of the placenta, the baby is protected much better, and although there are many drug restrictions, they are not as strict as at the beginning of pregnancy. Thus, the treatment of cough at different stages of pregnancy is different, but some methods are effective and safe in all trimesters.
Cough during pregnancy: general recommendations
When coughing, it is recommended that the air in the room be cool and not dry (humidity 50–70%): cool air promotes reflex deepening and slowing of breathing, which makes breathing more efficient, and sufficiently humidified air helps to moisturize mucous membranes, reduce the amount of viscous mucus, and thin sputum, which is one of the causes of cough. Therefore, during the heating season, when the air in apartments is very dry, you cannot do without ventilation and the use of humidifiers (or other methods of humidification). In addition, the air must be clean, for which you need to regularly do wet cleaning and use air purifiers.
Treatment of cough during pregnancy: nutrition tips
There is an opinion that some familiar dishes have a positive effect on coughs: for example, mashed potatoes prepared with the addition of milk help relieve cough. It should also be taken into account that the digestion process is very energy-intensive. Therefore, to save the body’s energy to fight infections (and a signal for this is poor appetite), you should choose foods that are easy to digest, low-calorie, rich in vitamins and minerals: fruits, vegetables, dairy products, compotes, jelly, juices. In order to avoid additional irritation of the mucous membranes and provocation of cough, it is advisable to exclude from your menu very sour, spicy, salty foods and, of course, foods that cause allergic reactions.
When coughing during pregnancy, you need to drink a lot (if there are no contraindications, and the doctor has not recommended that you limit fluid): drinks should be warm, non-allergenic, pleasant for you (teas, fruit drinks, compotes, jelly, still mineral water). Why is this so important? The fact is that such a drinking regime helps to moisturize the mucous membranes, pathogenic agents and viscous mucus are mechanically washed away (gargles are also used for the same purpose), and toxins formed during infectious and inflammatory processes are removed from the body.
Treatment of cough during pregnancy: inhalation and gargling
One of the fairly effective and safe methods of treating cough during pregnancy is inhalation. They can be carried out at any stage of pregnancy either with the help of special devices - nebulizers (their fine spraying facilitates the penetration of the medicinal substance into the lower sections of the respiratory tract), or without special devices, in the old fashioned way, breathing over potatoes, or decoctions of herbs that have an anti-inflammatory effect. It must be remembered that hot steam can burn the upper respiratory tract, so both potatoes and herbal decoctions should be allowed to cool a little, and only then begin the procedure. At elevated body temperatures, hot inhalations are prohibited; cold inhalations and aromatherapy can be used (if there is no allergy to essential oils).
For dry cough, it is recommended to use inhalations with linden blossom and marshmallow; when wet - inhalation with chamomile, eucalyptus, lungwort herb, primrose.
Gargling moisturizes the mucous membranes, removes viscous mucus and pathogens from their surface. For rinsing, it is recommended to use warm decoctions and infusions of herbs (chamomile, linden, rose hips, etc.), water with the addition of soda (soda helps to liquefy and remove mucus), antiseptic solutions (furacilin, miramistin), which have antibacterial and antiviral effects.
Treatment of cough during pregnancy: physiotherapeutic procedures
Most often, for coughs caused by colds, infectious and inflammatory diseases, the following types of physiotherapeutic procedures are used: inhalations, ultraviolet irradiation, UHF therapy, electrophoresis, chest massage.
For coughs in pregnant women, inhalations are most often used.
UHF, like other electro- and heat treatment procedures, is relatively contraindicated during pregnancy, and cannot be performed at all at elevated temperatures.
Since the technique of drainage massage, which helps remove phlegm from the bronchi, includes vibrations, this procedure is not recommended for pregnant women.
Electrophoresis with magnesium is quite widely used when there is a threat of miscarriage, however, this method, but with other components, is useful for coughs: in the case of a wet cough, calcium chloride is used, and in the case of a dry cough, calcium iodide is used.
Ultraviolet irradiation (UVR) has a powerful bactericidal effect. Local use of ultraviolet radiation for infectious and inflammatory processes of the upper respiratory tract in pregnant women is permitted and can be used as an auxiliary method of treatment for cough.
Medicines to treat cough during pregnancy
Many medications are prohibited for use in pregnant women, and even more medications whose effects in pregnant women have not been studied or have not been studied enough. However, in a number of situations, the use of medications cannot be avoided (for example, the prescription of antibiotics for pneumonia or severe bacterial bronchitis is mandatory), and only a doctor can choose a drug that is most effective and safe during pregnancy.
All cough medications can be divided into two groups: antitussives and expectorants, and the simultaneous use of drugs from different groups is unacceptable. Antitussives act on cough receptors (peripheral action) or on the cough center (central action). Expectorant drugs, in turn, are divided into three subgroups: the first of them increases the amount of mucus (baking soda, potassium and sodium iodides), the second, through irritation of the nerve endings in the stomach, activates the cough and vomiting centers in the brain (most herbal remedies: mother -and-stepmother, wild rosemary, thermopsis grass, etc.) and the third subgroup - mucolytics - substances that dilute sputum and promote its elimination (drugs ambroxol, bromhexine hydrochloride, acetylcysteine).
If the attending physician has decided to prescribe you medications, you should not refuse to take them for fear of harming the baby: firstly, if the doctor prescribes medications for you, then it means that in this case you cannot do without them, and secondly, the doctor chooses the most safe means during pregnancy, and thirdly, the disease itself that caused the cough and its complications can be much more dangerous for you and the child than prescribed medications.
Herbal medicine for the treatment of cough in pregnant women
It is important to remember that a number of herbal remedies are contraindicated for pregnant women. Thus, a common cough remedy made from licorice or licorice should not be taken by expectant mothers due to the pronounced effect on water-salt metabolism and the high probability of hormonal imbalance. Aloe, raspberry leaves, barberry, thermopsis grass, elecampane, tansy, hyssop (as well as preparations based on them) can increase the tone of the myometrium (muscle layer of the uterus), cause uterine contractions and provoke miscarriage or premature birth. Plantain, tansy, rhubarb, string, calamus and pine buds have had an adverse effect on the fetus; Thyme and sage can provoke uterine bleeding. Unfortunately, all possible adverse effects of herbal medicine, the interaction of various components of herbal preparations, as well as medicinal plants with various medications have not yet been fully studied. Therefore, the use of any herbal preparation during pregnancy should be approached with caution.
For colds and coughs during pregnancy, linden flowers, lingonberry berries and leaves, blackberries, blueberries, blueberries, chamomile, yarrow, rose hips, birch leaves, and viburnum are allowed. Most of these herbal remedies have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Marshmallow flowers and root help thin and remove mucus, but it is preferable to refrain from using them in the first trimester.
Traditional medicine for the treatment of cough in pregnant women
A number of traditional medicines have proven their effectiveness for coughs. These well-known methods can also be used during pregnancy: radish or onion with honey (in the absence of an allergic reaction to honey), figs with milk, Borjomi mineral water.
Precautionary measures
Why is a cough dangerous during pregnancy?
A seemingly harmless cough reaction can be quite dangerous for the expectant mother and baby. With a strong, often dry and constant cough, tension in the abdominal wall occurs, and pressure in the chest and abdominal cavities increases. This can lead to a reflexive, involuntary increase in tone and contraction of the muscular layer of the uterus, which can lead to miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy (especially if there is a threat of miscarriage) and premature birth in later stages.
In addition, with frequent, constant coughing, fetal hypoxia may develop (impaired oxygen supply to the baby), which leads to a delay in intrauterine development.
In the presence of predisposing factors (previa or low position of the placenta), cough can provoke uterine bleeding.
A strong cough in a pregnant woman increases blood pressure.

With the onset of pregnancy, a woman’s body is subject to all sorts of tests, including an increased risk of colds, acute respiratory infections, and acute respiratory viral infections, about which there are many myths and misconceptions. .
There is no need for the expectant mother to get sick, so she needs to use all methods of protection against viruses.
When your ear hurts, it's hard to think about anything else. It shoots, it jerks, and it just hurts a lot. It turns out that during pregnancy, otitis media occurs somewhat more often due to a decrease in the activity of the expectant mother’s immune system.

How to treat cough during pregnancy
December 20, 2017
General information
If a person coughs a lot, this symptom significantly worsens his life. During pregnancy, coughing causes the expectant mother great discomfort. Since immunity significantly weakens during pregnancy, a woman can catch a cold at any stage. Sometimes even short contact with a patient or slight hypothermia can trigger a cold or ARVI.
However, if we talk about the dangers of coughing during pregnancy, it should be noted that it is only a symptom of the disease, and can be evidence of a variety of ailments. This is a reflex reaction aimed at clearing the airways from bronchial secretions. Consequently, it is not the symptom itself that requires treatment, but the disease that provoked it. Sometimes a person coughs due to an allergic reaction to external irritants.
Pregnancy and cough - this combination can be a problem, because during the period of bearing a baby, especially in the early stages, a woman should not take effective expectorants or cough suppressants. By the way, most herbal remedies should not be taken during pregnancy. Therefore, those expectant mothers who prefer folk remedies when coughing so as not to harm the child also often risk harming the baby. After all, such drugs also have side effects.
Children's cough syrup should not be used either. Despite the fact that such medications seem safe at first glance, because they are given to children under 3 years of age, in fact, the drug approved for children can negatively affect the fetus.
Therefore, in order to protect the health of mother and baby, medications allowed for pregnant women should be prescribed by a doctor, as well as the regimen for taking them.
Why is coughing dangerous?
In most cases, cough is a sign of a bacterial or viral respiratory disease. Therefore, in the absence of proper treatment, the disease can gradually become chronic, and complications are also likely to develop. In such conditions, the likelihood of miscarriage, premature birth, and intrauterine infection increases. The risk of developmental defects in the baby also increases.
In addition, immediately at the moment when the expectant mother coughs, the tone of her uterus increases. And this condition threatens miscarriage and fetal hypoxia.
If the expectant mother has low placentation or placenta previa, then due to strong muscle tension during coughing, bleeding from the uterus may begin.
And with toxicosis, coughing attacks can significantly increase the severity of nausea and aggravate the condition.
Treatment of cough during pregnancy
We will discuss below what you can drink when you cough in order to quickly cure the disease that caused it.
How to treat cough during pregnancy in the 1st trimester
The most important period in the process of fetal formation is the first months after conception. It is at this time that all systems and organs of the unborn child are actively formed. Accordingly, then there is a high risk of developing severe pathologies and fetal malformations, which can be caused by prohibited drugs. Of course, at this time it is better not to get sick at all, so the expectant mother needs to be very conscious about her health. But if a woman still gets sick, she can only take medications approved by her doctor. Only a doctor can tell you how to treat a cough during pregnancy, after conducting all the necessary research and making a diagnosis.
If the question arises about how to treat cough in the 1st trimester during pregnancy, the doctor will recommend the most gentle treatment methods that are safe for the woman and baby.
However, during this period all medications are only relatively safe. Sometimes a woman, without thinking about how to treat her throat during pregnancy in the 1st trimester, sucks lozenges. But even they contain active ingredients, the effect of which can negatively affect the fetus. Cough lozenges sold in stores contain extracts of eucalyptus, mint, as well as preservatives and flavorings that are not at all beneficial for the baby.
During the first trimester, it is acceptable to use some medications, as can be found in the table below.

How to cure a severe cough during pregnancy in the 2nd trimester?
The second and 3rd trimester is the time when all systems and organs of the fetus are finally formed and mature. During this period, the child is actively preparing for birth and life after it. Therefore, in both the second and third trimesters, it is better not to take large amounts of medications.
However, if we talk about what can be used in the 2nd trimester if you need to get rid of a cough or treat a throat, then it should be noted that during this period the restrictions are no longer so strict. If necessary, the doctor may advise that pregnant women can also take some synthetic drugs for cough.
The tables indicate how to cure a cough in the 3rd trimester and in the second.

However, only the attending physician can correctly determine how to treat a dry cough during pregnancy or what to take if you have a sore throat.
Physiotherapy – treatment at home and in medical institutions
The safest way to treat cough while carrying a baby is physical therapy, since it is a non-drug method. This method is most effective for dry cough.
However, some methods still cannot be used.
Should not be used:
- radiation treatment;
- banks;
- mustard plasters;
- foot baths;
- electrotherapy;
- hot baths.
However, expectant mothers should not once again visit medical institutions where a lot of patients are concentrated. Moreover, a number of physiotherapy procedures can be successfully carried out at home. Almost every forum where treatment problems for pregnant women are discussed contains advice on how to carry out inhalations or how to treat a throat with gargles.
Inhalations
To carry out inhalation, you can use a nebulizer or use a very ordinary teapot. The vapors are inhaled through the spout of the kettle, onto which a funnel twisted from cardboard is placed. To carry out inhalation, you need to adhere to some important rules:
- body temperature should not be elevated;
- the solution for inhalation should have a temperature of 30 to 40 degrees;
- the duration of inhalation is about 10 minutes, such “sessions” need to be carried out 3-6 times a day;
- After the session you need to not talk or eat anything for about half an hour.
The following mixtures can be used as solutions for inhalation:
- Dilute 50 g of baking soda in one liter of boiling water, then cool the mixture slightly.
- Dilute 10 g of honey in one glass of warm water. Whether honey can be used during pregnancy in any medicinal product depends on whether the woman has had allergic reactions to this product.
- Dissolve 10 g of pre-chopped garlic and eucalyptus leaves in one liter of boiling water. After this, you need to cool the mixture a little.
- Dilute 20 g of sage in one glass of boiling water and cool slightly.
Gargling
If a pregnant woman has a sore throat or just a sore throat, gargling is an excellent treatment method in this case.
You need to prepare this product before you start rinsing. When the liquid becomes homogeneous, it should be cooled. You need to gargle up to 8 times a day; one glass of the prepared solution is enough for one gargle. Rinse after meals.
Expectant mothers can use the following rinsing solutions:
- An infusion of 10 g of chamomile flowers poured into one glass of boiling water.
- A solution of half a teaspoon of baking soda in one glass of warm water.
- An infusion of 10 g of plantain leaves poured into a glass of boiling water.
- An infusion of 10 g of linden leaves poured into a glass of boiling water.
Traditional methods for treating cough during pregnancy
You can learn about what you can drink for a cough during pregnancy from numerous traditional medicine recipes. However, even when talking about traditional methods of treating an expectant mother, you need to know that you should consult a doctor about what you can take.
In addition, it is important not only to know what to drink, but also to clearly monitor how the body perceives this or that treatment method. After all, sometimes even a seemingly ordinary radish with honey can cause undesirable effects if an allergic response develops.
Products with honey
Honey products can be used both externally and internally, provided that the woman is not allergic to bee products. After all, honey is a strong allergen, and if any negative effects occur, its use should be stopped.
The use of honey internally helps dry cough gradually become productive. However, you can also use products with honey when it is wet. This treatment will help speed up the process of clearing the bronchi from mucus.
External use
- Русский
- You can rub the chest area with honey - this procedure is carried out in the morning and evening.
- At night, you can put compresses on your chest using warmed honey. The compress is covered with cling film.
Application internally
- Русский
- Three times a day before meals you need to slowly dissolve 1 tsp. honey, slightly warmed.
- Honey can be added to tea and other drinks - 1 teaspoon per glass of liquid.
- You can prepare a remedy from honey and black radish juice (1:2), which you drink three times a day, 2 tbsp. l.
Onion garlic
These are very strong natural antiseptics, the phytoncides of which effectively destroy bacteria and viruses. Therefore, both onions and garlic can simply be cut and placed indoors to ensure air disinfection. If you put several cut cloves of garlic and onion on plates, you get the so-called indirect inhalation.
You can also use onion and garlic juice separately. To get juice, you need to chop onion or garlic and mix with 1 tbsp. l. honey After half an hour, strain the released juice and take 1 tsp several times a day.
As for whether pregnant women can eat garlic, there are different opinions. After all, some experts claim that it can increase the tone of the uterus and also cause allergic manifestations. But still, most doctors agree that it can be consumed in very small quantities.
Milk
You can soothe a throat that is inflamed due to illness with warm milk. It will also help cope with coughing attacks and calm the nerves.
Milk should be drunk in small sips, it should be warm.
- If you mix it with alkaline still mineral water (1:1), then this mixture will promote the separation of phlegm.
- You can boil milk with sage (1 tablespoon of herb per 200 g of milk). Drink 1 tbsp before bed. l.
- A drink made from milk and figs helps with colds. To prepare it, four dried figs are boiled in half a liter of milk until it turns brown. Drink 100 g of this product warm three times a day.
Prohibited cough medicines during pregnancy
It is important to know not only what medications the expectant mother can take, but also which drugs have been proven to have a negative effect on the fetus.
Synthetic products
The following medications should not be used:
Folk remedies for cough during pregnancy
You cannot take folk remedies based on the following plants:
- Folk remedies with comfrey and coltsfoot: these plants contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are carcinogenic and can cause mutations during development.
- Products containing ginseng, eleutherococcus, and echinacea, since they increase blood pressure and cause allergic reactions. If tablets or medicine contain such drugs, you must inform your doctor about this.
- Medicines with ginkgo biloba - they impair blood clotting and can cause uterine bleeding.
- Medicines with St. John's wort: reduce the effectiveness of painkillers and can worsen the effect of anesthesia during cesarean section.
How to prevent coughing in expectant mothers
Every woman expecting a child is responsible not only for her own health, but also for the condition of the unborn baby throughout the entire nine months. It is very important to try not to get sick at this time and to prevent the development of those unpleasant symptoms that can negatively affect the condition of the fetus. How cough affects the fetus has already been discussed above. To avoid negative effects, you need to take maximum care of yourself during pregnancy:
- Avoid contact with people with colds and stay as little as possible in places where there are many people at the same time. The latter is especially relevant during periods of epidemic colds.
- If there is a need to visit any public place, you need to lubricate the nasal mucosa with Vaseline or oxolinic ointment, and try to keep your mouth closed. After returning home, you should wash your hands very well, rinse your nose and rinse your mouth with saline or boiled water.
- The room in which a woman stays needs to be ventilated as often as possible and wet cleaned.
- Daily walks in the fresh air are very important - they should be long.
- It is necessary to prevent hypothermia and overheating, and not to change the climate sharply.
As soon as the first signs of the disease appear, you should consult a doctor. You can practice inhalations, traditional methods or suck lollipops only if the woman is sure that she is developing a cold.
conclusions
Thus, every expectant mother should take care of her health and try by all means to prevent illness. If the cold still prevails, you should definitely consult a doctor about whether pregnant women can take any cough tablets during pregnancy. Even those cough tablets for pregnant women or cough syrup during pregnancy, which, according to the instructions, can be used by expectant mothers, it is better not to drink without a doctor’s prescription. By the way, if, after treating a cold, thrush begins to bother you, you should not take medications like Flucostat. You should also consult a doctor with such symptoms.
If you have a strong cough, you should not follow advice on forums about what kind of cough syrup you can use during pregnancy. And even pharmacists’ recommendations on which cough syrup to choose for pregnant women should not become a guide to action. Only safe means described above and prevention methods will not harm the health of mother and baby. All other drugs can be taken only under the supervision of a doctor.
