Sprays are very popular for the treatment of rhinitis. This group of drugs are solutions that are sprayed into the nasal cavity using a dispenser.
How do nasal sprays work?
The nasal spray is sprayed into the nasal passages with one click on the dispenser. At the moment of spraying, the drug is released from the bottle under pressure, broken into tiny particles.
Microparticles settle on the mucous layer and penetrate into it, providing a therapeutic effect. Due to its good penetrating ability, the medicinal aerosol reaches the deepest parts of the nose and paranasal sinuses.
The spray has many positive aspects, and above all these:
- Fast action of the drug. After spraying the aerosol, relief occurs within a few minutes.
- Ease of use of this dosage form. In order to apply the spray, you do not need to lie down, which allows, if necessary, treatment in transport, at work or any other public place.
- Possibility of administering the exact volume of medication. With one press, the required amount of solution is released; when using drops, this is difficult to ensure. The accuracy of the dosage also determines another quality of the spray - its economical use.
Sprays contain different medicinal bases, so they can constrict blood vessels, moisturize the mucous membrane, and have an antimicrobial or antibacterial effect. That is, it is necessary to choose a drug based on the manifestations of rhinitis and the cause of its occurrence.
Side effects from using sprays
The ease of use of the spray also creates a certain problem. The ease of use of this dosage form often leads to the fact that a person begins to use the aerosol even if the symptoms of rhinitis are minimal.
When using vasoconstrictor sprays, the vessels quickly get used to this effect and can no longer function independently in the desired direction. This leads to the fact that in order for the nose to breathe the way a person needs, each time a larger dose of medicine is required.
Long-term treatment of chronic rhinitis with vasoconstrictor drugs, including sprays, disrupts the nutrition of the mucous layer. As a result, the mucous wall gradually becomes thinner, and the vessels become fragile. The result of this process is nosebleeds with the slightest injury and a slight increase in blood pressure.
A single dosage of the spray is one or two clicks on the dispenser. But some people, wanting to ease their breathing faster, use much more at a time. It is necessary to remember that such an overdose of sprays with a vasoconstrictor effect ends with strong heartbeat, headache, nausea, and interruptions in the functioning of the heart.
Due to the high likelihood of adverse reactions, sprays for the common cold with vasoconstrictor components may be contraindicated:
- For hypertension.
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Severe thrombophlebitis.
- During the recovery period after a myocardial infarction.
- For prostate diseases.
- Patients with disorders of the thyroid gland.
- During pregnancy.
Under what conditions the drug cannot be used depends on what is included in its composition. Therefore, when purchasing a medicine, you should always read the instructions first.
Rules for using sprays for runny nose
Although the spray is simple and easy to use, it may be ineffective if you do not know the rules for using this dosage form.
When spraying an ENT aerosol, doctors advise adhering to the following recommendations:
- The nasal passages must first be thoroughly cleaned. To do this, you can wash them with saline solutions and then blow your nose well.
- The bottle is shaken before spraying the medicine.
- Spraying is carried out alternately in each nostril. First, one nostril is pinched, that is, a finger is pressed against the nasal septum and the drug is sprayed into the free nasal passage.
- There is no need to insert the dispenser deeply into the nasal cavity. It will be enough to ensure that the top of the bottle is located in the vestibule of the nose.
- After injecting the medicine, you need to take a deep breath.
- Similar actions are performed with the other nasal passage.
- After spraying the spray, try not to sneeze or blow your nose for several minutes.
The frequency of use of the spray is indicated in the instructions for its use. For some drugs, the therapeutic effect lasts no more than 4 hours, while other drugs make breathing easier for up to 12 hours.
Preparations with vasoconstrictor components should be used as rarely as possible; they can be injected one to three times during the day and once at night.
In order to minimize the likelihood of undesirable consequences from the use of sprays, their use must be approached wisely. In the first days of the development of the disease, it is better to use drugs with antiviral components and moisturizers; this will prevent the development of severe inflammation and reduce swelling.
Vasoconstrictor sprays are used only when breathing through the nose is very difficult and for no more than 5-7 days. After nasal congestion has decreased, you need to switch to safer products with anti-inflammatory, thinning and antimicrobial components.
Allergic rhinitis requires special treatment. Vasoconstrictor drops also help in eliminating it, but the production of inflammatory mediators stops only under the influence of antihistamine components. Antibiotic sprays are used for prolonged runny nose with purulent mucus and an increased likelihood of developing sinusitis.
Effective sprays for the common cold: list of drugs
The effectiveness of a spray for rhinitis does not depend on its price and duration of use, but on how well the medication is selected. It is best, if possible, to consult a doctor who can describe the specifics of using different types of nasal aerosols and the duration of their use.
Drugs are selected depending on the patient’s age, whether he has a history of chronic diseases, and drug tolerance is also taken into account.
Sprays with a vasoconstrictor effect
- Rhinonorm. The price of a 15 ml spray bottle starts at 70 rubles.
- Vibrocil. This medicine contains not only a vasoconstrictor, but also an antihistamine component. Price per bottle from 250 rubles.
- Tizin. The cost of the product starts from 80 rubles.
- Snoop. The cost of the drug starts from 130 rubles.
There are a huge number of drugs with vasoconstrictor components in pharmacies. They need to be selected according to age and duration of the therapeutic effect.
Sprays with moisturizing ingredients
- AquaMaris. The cost of a bottle is from 300 rubles.
- Physiometer. Bottle price from 350 rubles.
Moisturizing aerosols begin to be used at about one year of age. Until this age, children receive drops with the same name. Medicines in this group can be used regardless of the stage of the runny nose; they do not cure, but only moisturize the mucous membrane, help thin the viscous secretion and help create an environment unfavorable for the growth of bacteria.
Antibacterial sprays
- Isofra. The price of a bottle starts from 220 rubles.
- Polydexa. This drug contains not only an antibiotic, but also a hormone and a vasoconstrictor component. This composition helps well with many types of rhinitis, but the drug should be used only as prescribed by a doctor. Its cost is from 250 rubles.
Sprays with herbal ingredients
- Sinuforte. It helps well in the treatment of complicated rhinitis and sinusitis. The cost of this drug is very high, starting from 1500 rubles.
- Virunet Phytonos Echinacea. Cost from 100 rubles.
Preparations with herbal components have an anti-inflammatory effect. People with a predisposition to allergic reactions should approach their use with caution.
Sprays with antihistamine components
- Allergodil. The price starts from 400 rubles per bottle.
- Nasonex. The cost of a bottle is from 420 rubles.
Antihistamine sprays must be prescribed by a doctor. Some patients require medication on an ongoing basis, so they need medications that are safe for long-term use.
Features of the use of sprays in the treatment of children
A runny nose in children can be treated with a spray only when the child reaches one year. Before this time, there is a possibility that a powerful stream of medication may enter the throat and provoke a spasm. It should be borne in mind that some sprays are used only after 2-2.5 years. This applies to drugs such as Polydexa, Pinosol.
Medicines for a child must be prescribed by a pediatrician. When treating children, it is important to choose the right dosage and frequency of use of drugs. Children psychologically tolerate spraying the medicine more easily than instilling it, but this does not mean that the drug can be used uncontrolled.
Aquamaris and Salin are used to moisturize the mucous membrane. And young children cannot be trusted to use aerosols on their own; this can result not only in an overdose, but also in injuries to the nasal passages.
Using sprays for runny nose during pregnancy
During pregnancy, nasal congestion periodically or constantly bothers half of women. This is due to hormonal changes in the body, so there is no point in using drugs to treat a runny nose.
Vasoconstrictor sprays are for the most part prohibited during pregnancy - they increase blood pressure and constrict the blood vessels of the placenta, which adversely affects the development of the child. You can keep your nasal passages hydrated using safe seawater-based products. Helps make breathing easier and constantly humidify the air in the room.
If a cold develops, treatment for a pregnant woman should be prescribed by a doctor. The doctor selects a drug that does not have a toxic effect on the fetus.
It should be taken into account that each trimester of pregnancy has its own indications and contraindications for the use of different types of sprays.
Nasal sprays are one of the most convenient forms of treatment for a runny nose. But in order for such therapy to bring positive results and not cause side effects, it is always necessary to take into account all the nuances of using medicinal aerosols.

How to choose a spray for a runny nose
It is also difficult to choose a spray for a runny nose because the disease is caused by various causes, and the treatment at different stages is different. Therefore, when choosing the best spray, you need to know specifically the cause of the disease and what symptom you need to fight.
The advantage of spray over drops
A new and convenient form of the drug - a spray for a runny nose - has a number of advantages over drops:
- Accurate medication consumption. It is not always possible to count the drops, so more often they enter the nose in large quantities, which predisposes to the development of side effects and drying of the nasal mucosa.
- In the spray, the medicine is in a finely dispersed state, which ensures its better penetration into the tissues; it does not leak out or flow down the back wall of the pharynx.
- It is more convenient to use in transport, at work.
The spray is not recommended for use in children under one year of age - there is a risk of developing laryngeal spasm, i.e. developing acute respiratory failure.
Causes
A runny nose, or rhinitis, is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa, most often developing during viral infections or after hypothermia in people with reduced immunity and suffering from chronic diseases. The virus damages the epithelium of the nose and thereby creates conditions for the development of a bacterial infection.
The second reason may be allergies. Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal, during the flowering period of plants, or year-round with an atypical reaction to household allergens.
How to treat a cold runny nose
There are 2 approaches - eliminating the cause of the disease and symptomatic treatment. An infectious, or cold, runny nose has 3 stages:
- The dry stage is when the nose is irritated and itchy. The patient constantly sneezes and does not perceive odors well. The duration of the stage is a maximum of two days, treatment consists of prescribing antiviral sprays into the nose.
- Stage of heavy liquid discharge. The patient has a severe runny nose, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis, tingling and dullness in the ears. The treatment is comprehensive and aimed at combating severe and unpleasant symptoms.
- Mucopurulent stage. There is an improvement in well-being, nasal congestion goes away, the sense of smell is restored, but due to the addition of bacterial flora, the snot becomes green or brown, becomes thick and viscous. Therefore, the main treatment drugs are antibacterial sprays.
Spray for the first stage
Antiviral sprays are used to treat the first signs of acute respiratory infection and prevent it. Most often, they contain interferons, which destroy viruses, block their reproduction and spread throughout the body. With their early use, it is possible to reverse the development of a runny nose, i.e., avoid illness.
List of antiviral nasal sprays:
- Interferon;
- Grippferon spray;
- Laferon nasal;
- Derinat. It can be used not only in the first days of illness, but also later. Derinat improves immunity and restores inflamed mucous membranes.
To dry the mucous membrane, wash out and cleanse the nose of copious liquid snot, you need to irrigate the nasal cavity with a spray of a weakly concentrated saline solution:
- Salin (0.65%);
- Rinolux (0.65%). These sprays are an inexpensive treatment option.
Vasoconstrictors should not be used during the dry stage of rhinitis; they only dry out the mucous membrane, causing discomfort to the patient, expressed in tingling and burning in the nose.
Spray for the second stage
The essence of treatment at this stage is to restore normal mucus production and prevent bacterial complications. The second stage is the most unpleasant due to the pronounced main symptoms of the disease.
Vasoconstrictors
The main way to combat a runny nose at this stage is vasoconstrictor nasal sprays. They reduce swelling, relieve congestion, and due to the drying effect, reduce the amount of liquid discharge, as a result the patient can breathe normally, sleep and lead an active lifestyle.
But the symptoms are relieved temporarily. To avoid drug-induced rhinitis, you can use vasoconstrictors for no more than 5 days in a row.
The most common vasoconstrictor sprays:
- The best spray for runny noses for children and pregnant women is Nazol Kids. It contains phenylephrine, has a very gentle and short-lasting effect, which ensures safety for the delicate nasal mucosa of the child. Allowed from 2 years.
- Containing oxymetazoline - Nazol, Afrin, Nozakar, Fazin. These drugs are more effective; their vasoconstrictor effect lasts throughout the day. Oxymetazoline spray is not used in children under 6 years of age.
- Containing xylometazoline - Otrivin, Xylene, Galazolin, Farmazolin, etc. The action is similar to oxymetazoline, the effect is long-lasting. There are no age restrictions on the active substance.
To avoid undesirable consequences from long-term use of vasoconstrictor drugs, they can be replaced with astringent drops of 3% Protargol, 3% Collargol. They act similarly to vasoconstrictors, eliminate inflammation and congestion, and prevent the development of bacterial complications.
With liquid secretions, Protargol dries the nose and eliminates congestion; with thick secretions, it helps to quickly separate them from the walls of the nose and exit. Astringents are allowed from 2 years of age at a concentration of 1–2% depending on the age of the child.
Salt sprays
To eliminate nasal congestion, dry out the mucous membrane, and thin out thickened mucus by the 5th day of the disease, hypertonic saline sprays are more suitable:
- Quicks;
- Aquamaris;
- Dolphin;
- Humer is a good saline spray for children for runny noses.
Salt sprays based on sea and ocean water normalize salt metabolism and secretion production, destroy viruses and bacteria, increase local immunity and, due to hyperosmolarity, relieve swelling. To irrigate the nose, solutions need to be heated to a temperature of 31–33 degrees.
Spray for the purulent stage of the runny nose
Any pus in the nose should be treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. An antibiotic spray quickly eliminates pus and prevents the development of sinusitis and otitis media. But using it in the first days of a cold is pointless and even harmful - unjustified use of antibiotics leads to bacterial mutations and causes resistance.
Sprays for the treatment of bacterial rhinitis:
- Isofra. The course of treatment is no more than a week, the drug is approved even for the treatment of small children.
- Bioparox. It has a narrower list of sensitive bacteria and is approved for children over 2.5 years old.
- Polydexa. Combined spray for the common cold, contains 2 antibiotics, a vasoconstrictor and a hormonal component. Spray for runny nose for children is allowed from 2.5 years.
Homeopathy
At the first signs of illness, you can choose a homeopathic spray for a runny nose for treatment. They contain natural plant substances and minerals, so they are completely safe for children and pregnant women.
- Delufen, relieves swelling, has a vasoconstrictor and moisturizing effect, eliminates unpleasant sensations in the nose;
- Euphorbium;
- Delufen;
- Asinis;
- EDAS.
The listed preparations consist of different substances, but have a general moisturizing effect. Their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven; it is impossible to say which one has an advantage over the others. A homeopathic remedy must be selected individually, but if it does not help, its repeated use will also not bring results.
How to treat allergic rhinitis
The first and mandatory measure in the treatment of allergic rhinitis is to avoid contact with the allergen. To treat allergic rhinitis, you need to use antihistamines and cromonium nasal sprays.
If they are ineffective or intolerable, in more severe cases nasal glucocorticosteroids are prescribed. In case of severe congestion, it is permissible to irrigate the nose with the above-mentioned vasoconstrictor drugs.
- Antihistamines. Eliminate itchy nose, runny nose, sneezing, eye symptoms, but have virtually no effect on nasal congestion.
- Histimet;
- Vibrocil, in the form of a spray, is allowed from 6 years of age, drops - from newborns;
- Nazaval;
- Azelastine;
- Allergodil;
- Levocabastine.
Antihistamine sprays are usually prescribed for the treatment of adults and children from 6 years of age.
- Nazarel;
- Beclomethasone (Beconase, Nasobek, Aldecin);
- Budesonide;
- Nazacort.
Glucocorticosteroids are recommended for adults and children over 6 years of age; the safety of their use in young children has not been proven.
- Cromohexal;
- Cromoghlin;
- Cromosol.
- Salin;
- No-salt;
- Otrivin baby.
Spray for a runny nose has a number of advantages over nasal drops. But if the runny nose is advanced or complicated by a bacterial infection, then the disease cannot be overcome with one spray - consultation with a doctor and his medicinal prescriptions cannot be avoided.

What are the best and most effective nasal sprays for a runny nose?
A runny nose (or “rhinitis”) is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa. In itself it is not terrible, but it is very unpleasant. The head hurts, the sense of smell disappears, there is no appetite, it is difficult to breathe, and a burning sensation in the nose and sneezing become annoying companions of the patient.
A nasal spray for a runny nose will help cope with unpleasant symptoms. This is an effective and easy-to-use medicine.
What are sprays?
Nasal aerosols or nasal sprays for runny nose are a special type of medication. Unlike drops, they are a fine mixture of medicinal substances that is sprayed under pressure onto the nasal mucosa. The patient does not need to take a supine position and calculate the dosage. It is convenient to use the spray anywhere: at work, on the street, while traveling.
How does the spray act on the nasal mucosa?
Particles of the medicine, when irrigated with a spray, irrigate the nasopharynx and even reach the internal sinuses, so the drug is used when rinsing the nose or treating sinusitis. The design of the bottle is such that an overdose is excluded, and there is no risk of side effects.
Types of sprays for runny nose
Typically, aerosols contain several components and can have a wide spectrum of action. The following groups of aerosols are conventionally distinguished:
The best sprays for runny nose and nasal congestion
To choose the ideal cure for a runny nose, you need to know the cause of the disease.
There are several reasons:
Let's consider which is the best nasal spray for a runny nose to use for each group of rhinitis.
Allergy sprays
Aflubin naze
An inexpensive and effective herbal nasal spray to relieve allergy symptoms. Includes:
Refers to homeopathic remedies. Relieves nasal congestion; to do this, it can be sprayed onto the mucous membrane every half hour to an hour. Using the spray before bed makes breathing easier and helps you have a restful night.
Avamis
Avamis is a nasal spray for a runny nose of allergic causes with a synthetic hormone that penetrates special receptors through the mucous membrane and reduces the body's response to allergens. The drug is intended exclusively for eliminating symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults and children.
One application per day is enough.
Among the disadvantages, we note the high cost of the spray.
Vibrocil
Nasal spray for allergies with a pronounced vasoconstrictor effect.
The difference from other sprays in this direction is that it has a mild effect on the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Can be used by children from 6 years old. The drug belongs to the class of antihistamines.
Sprays for sinusitis
The use of sprays for sinusitis is justified by the form of release of these products. Spraying fine particles under pressure allows you to cover a large area of the mucous membrane and deliver medicinal substances to the paranasal sinuses.
Miramistin
An antiseptic that is affordable and approved for use even by pregnant women. At home, rinsing the nasopharynx helps speed up recovery. In a hospital setting, the drug is used for drainage of the sinuses during punctures and punctures, for deep cleansing of the nasopharynx from purulent contents using “cuckoo” devices.
Sinuforte
A new and expensive drug based on natural cyclamen extract. The action is based on the dilution of mucus in the sinuses and its active removal from the nose. Sometimes the use of Sinuforte allows you to do without punctures and operations. However, reviews of use are mixed. The use of the spray is possible only after prescription by a doctor.
Cyclamenos
An inexpensive and effective remedy for the prevention of sinusitis. The action is similar to Sinuforte. Made exclusively from natural ingredients: cyclamen extract, vitamins and essential oils of tea tree, eucalyptus and ginger. Upon contact with the nasal mucosa, it irritates it and causes rapid discharge of mucus and pus.
Polydexa with phenylephrine
A complex product that includes:
- Anti-inflammatory drug;
- antibiotic;
- vasoconstrictor component.
Must be used as directed by a physician. Indicated for bacteriological infections of the nasopharynx. This universal and highly effective spray is approved for use in children over 2.5 years old, one injection 3 times a day.
Isofra
Another nasal spray for a runny nose with antibacterial action. Unlike Polydexa, Isofra contains one antibiotic - framycetin. It acts on all known types of nasopharyngeal bacteria. This is a popular and affordable remedy for the treatment of exacerbations of chronic sinusitis.
Nasal rinsing sprays
Aqua normin
A means of hygiene and prevention of runny nose caused by various reasons: from colds to allergies. Made from Adriatic Sea water and contains natural salts and trace elements. Doctors advise using the spray daily during the spring and autumn seasons to prevent a runny nose and strengthen the body's defenses. Harmless for pregnant women and small children.
Aqualor
Aqualor - nasal spray with sea water. It thoroughly cleanses the nasal passages, moisturizes the nasopharynx and flushes out bacterial microflora from the nasopharynx.
- Aqua Soft is used for dry nose and allergies;
- Aqua norm - for colds;
- Aqua Forte – for nasal congestion;
- Aqua Extra – for chronic disease;
- Aqualor baby - for the smallest noses.
Morenasal
Sprays for nasal congestion
The most common type is a spray for nasal congestion without a runny nose. They act on adrenaline receptors in the nose, constrict blood vessels and relieve swelling. The danger of such drugs is getting used to them. You must follow the recommended dosage and do not use it for longer than prescribed. Otherwise, the effect of treatment will be the opposite.
Lazolvan Rino
A drug from the well-known line of Lazolvan products. The main advantage is the quick relief of unpleasant symptoms of a runny nose for a long time with a minimum dosage and a gentle effect on the nasal membrane. The composition also includes menthol, camphor and eucalyptus, which not only helps you breathe freely, but also refreshes.
Afrin
Canadian nasal spray for congestion and swelling with oxymetazoline. Relieves swelling of the mucous membrane within 15 minutes. Not allowed for children under 6 years old. It is effective, but a small bottle of the product is expensive.
Otrivin
Swiss antihistamine nasal spray for runny nose. In ENT practice it is used as a strong vasoconstrictor with a long-term effect. It has a neutral pH and contains moisturizing components that soften irritation during use. Menthol and eucalyptus pleasantly cool the inflamed nasal membranes and make breathing easier. The price of Otrivin is quite high for drugs of this series.
Vicks active sinex
The difference between this spray is its soft and gentle effect on the nasal mucosa. It includes:
- Equalipotol;
- aloe vera;
- levomenthol
The drug relieves swelling for up to 12 hours and moisturizes the nasopharynx. The medicine is sprayed not in a stream or stream, but in an ultra-thin shower, which makes the use of the drug economical (the bottle is designed for 294 sprays).
Rhinonorm
An inexpensive drug that quickly relieves the unpleasant symptoms of a runny nose: discharge and congestion. With irrigation, the nasal cavity is freed, and the patient begins to breathe noticeably better. It is often used in preparation for various types of ENT procedures.
When used topically, the medicine is almost not absorbed into the blood, which makes it possible to use it in children as young as two years old (at a dosage of 0.05%). The product contains sea water, which maintains the normal balance of moisture in the mucous membrane. Like all sprays with a vasoconstrictor effect, it should not be used for a long time (no more than 7 days).
Galazolin
Inexpensive and fast-acting drug. It has been used in ENT practice for a long time. The active component of the spray acts within 5 minutes. If the dosage and timing of use are observed, no side effects were found.
Xylene
Another affordable spray to relieve nasal congestion. Helps immediately after injection and maintains the result for a long time. The medicine tends to increase blood pressure and is undesirable for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 6 years of age.
Rinofluimucil
Combined action nasal spray for runny nose. Constricts blood vessels and promotes the release of mucus by diluting it. Helps even with prolonged and difficult to treat runny nose. Like all drugs in this series, if the dosage is exceeded, it becomes addictive.
Table. Comparison of nasal decongestion sprays by duration
action and time of application.
Moisturizing nasal sprays
AquaMaris
Spray for daily hygiene with salts of the Adriatic Sea. It cleans well of street and indoor dust and actively moisturizes the nasal mucosa. An excellent solution for people working in rooms with air conditioning and dry air, for smokers and drivers, as well as for everyone during the period when central heating is turned on. The only downside is the high price.
AquaMaster
Transparent nasal spray for runny nose with a pleasant almond scent. By moisturizing the inner cavity of the nose, it removes dry crusts, washes away germs and helps make breathing easier. Can be used before other medications and for daily hygiene. For rinsing, as many injections as necessary are allowed.
Sprays for polyps
Nazarel
Hormonal nasal spray with broad complex action. Within an hour it relieves the main signs of allergic rhinitis: itching, redness of the face, copious nasal discharge. The effect lasts for 24 hours. It is prescribed for polyps and adenoiditis, under the mandatory supervision of a doctor.
Nasonex
More expensive drug. Its action is similar to Nazarel, but it is less absorbed into the bloodstream and therefore is allowed for children from two years of age. After a course of therapy, patients with polyps noted a decrease in their size, improved nasal breathing and the return of their sense of smell.
Antiviral sprays
Basically, respiratory viruses enter our bodies through the nose. Increasing local immunity of the nasal mucosa is of fundamental importance, first of all, for the prevention of respiratory viral infections.
Derinat
The action of this drug is aimed at stimulating the immune system for a more active fight against viruses. The active substance is obtained from sturgeon fish. It is well absorbed and tolerated by the body. In combination with antibiotics, Derinat fights viral infections in the nasal cavity.
Interferon – Genferon Light
Genferon Light includes:
- Interferon, which has an antiviral immunostimulating effect;
- taurine, which has a positive effect on metabolic processes in cells.
An effective (but not cheap) drug for the treatment of ARVI and influenza. As a general rule, immunomodulators are not prescribed to children.
Cold sprays for children
Medicines for the common cold in spray form are approved for use by children. The safest are children's nasal rinsing sprays with sea water:
Irrigation of the nasal mucosa with these sprays helps with all types of runny nose and is harmless to the health of young patients. The use of other medications is permissible as prescribed by a specialist. This is due, first of all, to the likelihood of a non-standard reaction to aerosols in children - a spasm of the respiratory tract.
Sprays for newborns
You need to be especially careful when treating a runny nose in very young children. The main danger of a spray at this age is not an overdose of the drug, but the possibility of causing a spasm of the larynx, trachea and bronchi of the infant when injected. Therefore, it is better to stop using sprays and use drops.
Sprays for pregnant women
The choice of any medications during pregnancy should be made by a doctor. Preference is given to safe drugs of natural origin. When treating a runny nose, a nasal spray with sea water is suitable for pregnant women; for severe symptoms, homeopathic and vasoconstrictor sprays in minimal dosages and short courses.
Euphorbium compositum
When should you not use sprays?
Restrictions on the use of aerosols:
- Infancy of the child;
- age up to 2.5 years;
- addiction due to excessive use of vasoconstrictor drugs.
In the first and second cases, doctors recommend taking drops. In the third, follow the dosage and not exceed the course of treatment for several days.
Conclusion
Today, aerosols for the common cold are produced in various ways: antihistamine sprays against allergies, vasoconstrictors for congestion, nasal sprays with sea water for the prevention of rhinitis, homeopathic remedies for pregnant women, anti-inflammatory antibiotics.
Use antiviral sprays prophylactically and at the first symptoms of a cold. Then respiratory diseases will be easier and of shorter duration.

For me, washing my nose with saline solutions became a revelation not long ago. I was suffering from a strong, lingering runny nose and a friend told me to start rinsing my nose, and after a couple of days the runny nose began to go away. Washing is very effective!
I use AquaMaster during colds, it helps relieve congestion and moisturize the mucous membrane. And I wash the child’s nose with it to reduce the dry crusts that form from the sniffles.
Our whole family (children from the age of one) use AquaMaster from the Evalar company. A good and effective analogue of Aquamaris, Aqualor and other similar sprays. We use it for both preventive and therapeutic purposes. Recently, my husband was sick, before using the drops, he washed his nose with AquaMaster, in combination everything worked much more effectively, which led to a quick recovery. I would also like to note the bottle, with a removable nozzle, which allows you to use it many times.
Now I wash it with morenasal spray with chamomile, containing calcined sea salt. It relieves inflammation very well and speeds up recovery.
And the domestic spray Morenasal always helps me. It relieves congestion well and moisturizes the mucous membrane. Thanks to the dispenser, it is easy to use and inexpensive.
I also rinse, drops on top. I usually take xylene, it’s cheap, but no less effective as, for example, rhinostop. And it comes in spray form. Moreover, I really liked the sprayer - it always works because it’s simple: you just need to press the bottle and spray.
Of the above, we liked Morenazal, the child himself pointed his finger at it on the shelf, he liked the packaging with the red beacon. Upon closer examination, it is the most profitable of the sprays in terms of price and volume. We always just rinse the nose with it and then instill vasoconstrictor drops.
First of all, you should understand that a runny nose is not a cause, but a consequence. And essentially there is no need to treat it; you need to understand and remove the cause of the runny nose.
If you suddenly have a runny nose, then this is the first bell - be sure to consult a doctor, because outwardly similar symptoms can be caused by various diseases and if you don’t figure it out in time, you may be late with treatment.
As for the “spray” form factor, it seems to me that this is just a temporary fad - fashion, because... Before their appearance, ointments and drops successfully handled treatment tasks.
Just like Anastasia “sat” on naphthyzine for a long time, it got to the point where she put it under her pillow. As a result, when I got tired of this dependence, I developed the following scheme for myself. As soon as I begin to realize that I have a runny nose, I rinse my nose with Miramistin or its analogue Chlorhexidine, then I instill Sanorin and, after my breathing becomes easier, I moisturize my nose with Aquamaris. The scheme works great. A runny nose never lasts more than three days.
I had a naphthyzine addiction for 3 years, I remember those years! I couldn’t stand it and had an operation to cauterize the mucous membrane and finally my nose began to breathe without droplets. Then for another 2 years I was afraid to use vasoconstrictor drugs. When a runny nose starts, I rinse my nose with AquaMaster. When it doesn’t help at all, I use Otrivin, but not more than 3 days! I also instill Otrivin Baby for my daughter... But it’s better, of course, not to relieve the symptoms of a cold, but still treat it!

Nasal sprays: types and purposes, names, application
Nasal spray is a topical preparation that is actively used for rhinitis and congestion of various origins. It delivers the medicinal component directly to the problem area, eliminating the harmful effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Drops enter the nose, usually through injection using a mini-hand pump. This function is performed by a pipette or specially designed packaging. Some liquid nasal medications come in the form of an oil emulsion and simply flow into the nasal passages, but they are also traditionally treated as a series of drops.
Classification of drops depending on purpose
Nasal sprays may be prescribed in the following cases:
- Allergy. They may reduce secretion by constricting blood vessels, or contain antihistamines that prevent the development of the disease.
- Colds. The drops help get rid of congestion, reduce the severity of inflammatory reactions, and help eliminate the pathogenic agent from the body.
- Candidiasis. This is a fungal infection that sometimes affects the nose and mouth area. Sprays have a fungicidal effect on areas located deep in the nasal passages.
- Nose injuries and previous surgeries. In such cases, the drops serve to cleanse the nose, help relieve swelling, and soften the resulting crusts of dried mucus.
- Low immune status of the body, high risk of colds. Drops of this kind contain immunomodulators and immunostimulants, which are designed to prevent infection in the autumn-winter period.
- Vaccinations. Some vaccine preparations are delivered to the body in the form of nasal drops.
- Anesthesia. During operations in the nasal canals, the anesthetic agent is also administered locally in the form of a spray or aerosol.
Vasoconstrictor sprays and drops
Drugs of this kind act on the smooth muscles of the vessels that feed the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, as a result of which their lumen decreases. After a decrease in blood flow, swelling subsides, the separation of liquid secretions stops and breathing becomes much easier.
Important! Vasoconstrictor drops do not have a direct therapeutic effect; they serve only to relieve symptoms or carry out diagnostic procedures.
The use of vasoconstrictor drugs for more than 7-10 days is contraindicated. Otherwise, adaptation of the vessels occurs, and without medication they will be constantly in an expanded state, which will provoke swelling.
These medications are not recommended for use with drugs intended to be absorbed into the blood. Since, due to the narrowing of the lumen of the vessel, the rate of entry of any compounds into them decreases, the effectiveness decreases. However, in some cases, with complete nasal congestion, it is impossible to instill a drug with a therapeutic effect. In this situation, you need to try to find a “golden mean”, after using vasoconstrictors, wait until the moment when the nasal passage is not yet completely swollen, but breathing is already becoming difficult. A good solution would be to use drops after rinsing the nose, if such a procedure is included in the course of treatment.
To avoid overdose, it is better to give preference to medicines in the form of a spray. It allows you to achieve the desired effect with a smaller dosage of the drug; in addition, the number of injections is easier to control than the number of drops.
On the modern Russian market, the most popular medications of this kind are the following:
Naphthyzin
For a long time, this medicine cost only a few rubles, but in 2014 its price increased sharply. Today its price is rubles. Doctor Andrei Bogdanov described it this way: “Naphthyzin is the strongest and simplest drug in this group.” Side effects of the drops are rare and boil down to dizziness, tachycardia, swelling of the mucous membrane after prolonged use.
Xylene
Analogues containing the same active substance may be called xylometazoline, xymelin, galazolin. The price of the drug is slightly higher - rubles. Its effectiveness is lower than that of naphthyzin, but, according to the instructions, it can be used for up to 2 weeks without the risk of addiction. Side effects are mainly local: dry nasal mucosa, burning, sneezing, and rarely allergic reactions.
Nazivin
The cost of nasal drops is rubles. Their big advantage is that they can be used by children from birth. For patients under 1 year of age, the dosage should be 0.01% of the active substance, from one year to 6 years – 0.025%, for children over 6 years of age and adults – 0.05%. The drug causes reactions from the mucous membrane - dryness and burning, and in rare cases, congestion after the end of the course of treatment.
Tizin Xylo
The active substance of the spray acts within a few minutes after application. Contraindicated in children under 2 years of age. A bottle of 10 ml (calculated for 100 doses) costs rubles. If you are hypersensitive to the components of the drug, dryness, itching in the nasal cavity, and crust formation may occur. Headache and insomnia are rarely observed. In isolated cases, reactions from the cardiovascular system are possible: tachycardia, high blood pressure, etc.
Anti-inflammatory agents
Such drugs are aimed directly at combating the mechanism of the disease. They usually contain natural ingredients that ease the course of colds and speed up recovery.
These nasal drops and sprays include:
Aquamaris
The drug is sterilized sea water, which, in addition to regular salt, contains a number of microelements. They have a positive effect on the ciliated epithelium of the nasal mucosa, promoting the removal of liquid secretions. Salt has a powerful antiseptic effect, slowing down the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The drug is useful for both colds and allergies.
Aquamaris baby is used from birth. It is recommended for instillation in children under one year of age for hygienic purposes and for moisturizing the epithelium of the nasal passages. This spray for a runny nose helps to dilute the secretion secreted by the mucous membrane and promote its removal. It is one of the safest products in the group; the manufacturer noted only allergic reactions among the side effects. The cost of the drug is quite high - a 30 ml bottle costs from 200 rubles and more, depending on the region.
Aqualor
The composition and characteristics are similar to the previous drug. There is also a “baby” line for children up to one year old. Aqualor is slightly cheaper in price; a 50 ml bottle will cost rubles. The drug has no restrictions on its use; it is recommended for use in rhinitis of various etiologies, for hygienic purposes, and to increase the effectiveness of medications taken intranasally.
Kameton
This inexpensive product is an aerosol, available in 30 and 45 ml cylinders. The price is 50 and 70 rubles respectively. The drug contains chlorobutanol hydrate and auxiliary components (camphor, eucalyptus oil, menthol). This compound has an antiseptic, analgesic and sedative effect. Other components help restore the mucous membrane and reduce the severity of cold symptoms.
Important! Cametone is contraindicated for newborns; it can cause allergies, dry nasal mucosa, and sneezing.
Mentoclar
It is a nasal drop containing only products of natural origin. The preparation contains essential oils of mint, eucalyptus, thyme, and cedar. Mentoclar drops have an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory effect, soothe irritated mucous membranes. The drug may cause a burning sensation. Its cost starts from 75 rubles, but, unfortunately, the medicine is quite difficult to find on the open market; it is found mainly in online pharmacies.
Pinosol
It is an oil essence. Pharmacological action – anti-inflammatory, reducing the viscosity of mucosal secretions. The composition includes essential oils of medicinal plants, as well as isolated and purified chemical compounds of natural origin - tocopherol acetate, etc. 10 ml of the drug costs 130 rubles. Pinosol can be used from one year of age. Allergic reactions to the components of the drug are possible.
Sprays and nasal drops with antiallergic activity
Such drugs are used mainly to reduce the severity of local symptoms - sneezing, rhinitis, dryness and irritation of the nasal mucosa, swelling.
Nasal sprays act quickly, eliminating unpleasant symptoms, however, it is worth remembering that they do not cure allergies. Such drugs will be useless for rhinitis of other origins, so you should consult your doctor before using them.
Depending on the severity of the allergy, the patient may be recommended a drug from one of the following groups:
- Medicines based on sodium cromoglycate or cromoglycic acid. Such drugs are intended for long-term use (2-4 months). They stabilize the membranes of mast cells - the initiators of the development of an allergic reaction. Manufacturers inform that these medications are not suitable for relieving acute attacks of the disease. The names of drugs usually contain the prefix “cromo” - cromosol, cromoglin, cromohexal. When released in the form of a spray or drops, the price is usually low - rubles. The inhalation solution will cost much more - up to 500 rubles.
- Drugs that create a protective layer on the epithelium. This group includes the remedy called. The microcellulose included in its composition, when applied to the nasal mucosa, creates a protective film that prevents allergens from reaching the epithelium. The most effective use is before the onset of symptoms of the disease. Since these drugs have virtually no side effects, they can be taken to prevent seasonal allergies. When starting treatment with an already developed set of symptoms, additional use of steroids may be necessary. 500 mg of the drug (200 doses) has a price of 350 to 400 rubles. The big advantage of nazoval is the safety of its use during pregnancy, lactation, and also in childhood.
- H-1 histamine receptor blockers. Such drugs prevent histamine (the main compound responsible for allergic reactions) from binding to smooth muscle and epithelial receptors. This prevents the development of edema and rhinitis. These products include Zyrtec drops. They contain cetirizine. Although there are many analogues of this drug, most of them are not suitable for intranasal use. A 20 ml bottle will cost 300–350 rubles. Another active substance that is included in nasal and eye drops is levocabastine. It is contained in drops of histimet, tizin alert, and vizine. Their price usually ranges from 200 to 350 rubles. Important! Levocabastine should be taken with caution by persons suffering from kidney disease.
- Corticosteroids. These drugs are recommended for use in cases of severe allergy symptoms or when drugs from other groups are ineffective. The reason is their systemic effect on a number of organs, as well as the high risk of adverse reactions. Drugs containing corticosteroids act on the cell nucleus, preventing the development of inflammation and allergies at the very beginning of the disease. Such drugs include Aldecin, Baconase, Nasobek, Avamys, Nasonex. Their price can range from 200 to 800 rubles.
Important! Patients taking hormonal medications with corticosteroids for a long time should be advised of the increased risk of colds due to a reduced immune status. Also, when taken for several months, they should be examined to identify changes in the mucous membrane and nasal septum.
Immunostimulants with antiviral activity and vaccines for nasal administration
These drugs, unlike most nasal sprays, act not only locally, they affect the entire immune system.
The intranasal route of administration is an excellent alternative to the oral route, since it does not have a negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract. At the moment, you can use the following drugs with similar effects:
Grippferon
The medication contains the compound interferon, the main regulator of antiviral activity in the human body. It allows you to strengthen the immune response against the pathogen and increase the body's resistance during the peak period of colds. The drug is suitable for pregnant women and newborns. Grippferon has a large number of analogues, which may differ in the type of interferon used and excipients. They usually end in "pheron". The price of such drugs ranges from 250 to 400 rubles. Interferon-containing drugs are safe to use and have virtually no side effects. They are not recommended for use in case of severe allergies.
IRS-19
The drug contains remnants of the cell walls of bacteria - the most common causative agents of colds. They activate the body's defense mechanisms and increase the production of antibodies against pathogens. This vaccine can be used starting from three months of age, but it is contraindicated for use during pregnancy. It can be used both for the prevention and treatment of colds. At the beginning of the course, side effects such as sneezing and runny nose are possible. The price of the vaccine starts from 420 rubles.
Derinat
The drug contains sodium deoxyribonucleate. This compound has the ability to activate cells of the immune system and trigger a cascade of reactions aimed at removing the pathogen from the body. However, when used intranasally, as studies have shown, its effectiveness is minimal. The cost of nasal drops is about 300 rubles.
This is what T.S. Polyakova and L.A. Luchikhin write. from the ENT Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the Russian State Medical University in Moscow regarding his research in 2004:
“In clinical practice, Derinat has been successfully used by us in the form of intramuscular injections in the treatment of patients with nasal boils, with persistent purulent-inflammatory diseases of the pharynx, ear, paranasal sinuses, with sub- and atrophic processes, and also for prevention, the drug was used topically (drops in nose or aerosol)."
Antibiotic nasal sprays
There are still few drugs with similar effects, but numerous studies have demonstrated their effectiveness and safety. In fact, these are the only topical medications that are quite effective in helping to fight infection.
Similar drugs include:
Isofra
The spray contains an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group - framycetin. It affects the membranes of bacteria, disrupts their metabolism, which leads to their rapid death. A significant disadvantage of the drug is the suppression of the growth and reproduction of representatives of the natural microflora of the nasal sinuses, especially with long-term (more than 10 days) use. The cost of a 15 ml bottle is rubles.
Bioporax
It is an aerosol consisting of tiny particles of a substance intended for irrigation of the mouth and nose. The antibiotic fusafungin, which is part of it, has a wide spectrum of bacteriostatic action and limited antifungal activity. This means that it is able to stop the growth and reproduction of pathogens, but not cause their death. Bioporax is almost completely safe to use; the only possible side effect is allergic reactions. Its price is quite high - 450 rubles per 10 ml of the drug.
Polydexa with phenylephrine
The drug contains several compounds that provide a complex effect: anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor and antibacterial. The drug is active against a wide group of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms, but its use is contraindicated in kidney disease, pregnancy and lactation. The average cost of the drug is 300 rubles.
The choice of nasal drops should be based on the severity of the disease and its symptoms. There is no point in using expensive and potent drugs for a mild cold, since they most often have serious side effects. For long-term diseases, it is necessary to consult a specialist who will help you plan a treatment program correctly.
