In this note, we will dwell in more detail on the use of xenon gas in the dental practice of doctors at the Dial-Dent Center for the purpose of sedation (calming). The use of xenon for anesthesia is not discussed in this article.
In dentistry, the problem of achieving ideal pain relief is still not 100% solved:
Dentistry has developed very effective local anesthetic drugs. But many people and dentists know that sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, even very good methods of local anesthesia do not work or do not work enough. This is because pain has many aspects. The aspect coming from painful tissues is effectively relieved by local anesthesia. But the aspect of pain that comes from the psyche is a little more complicated. If a person is afraid, tense, or stressed, then local anesthetics lose some of their effectiveness. Even with complete shutdown of pain impulses from peripheral tissues, a person can feel pain. These sensations trigger a cascade of negative reactions, starting from increased blood pressure and increased heart rate to sudden hormonal changes. All this negatively affects the postoperative period. It heals worse, takes longer and the risk of complications increases.
The Dial-Dent Family Dental Center also uses other techniques that can remove the aspect of pain that “comes from the head.” The first method is dental treatment under anesthesia. The second technique is dental treatment in medical sleep, under sedation. Recently, another interesting technique has appeared - dental treatment using xenon. Xenon is the most modern anesthetic. It attracts scientists and doctors because it is an ideal anesthetic. Side effects of xenon use are unknown.
Dial-Dent not only relieves pain that may occur due to dental problems. We take a comprehensive approach to ensuring patient comfort during dental procedures. By using xenon therapy before, during and after dental procedures, the following effects can be achieved:

Contraindications to the use of xenon for pain relief and sedation (calming) at the Diald-Dent Dental Center:
- individual hypersensitivity to the drug; subjective unpleasant sensations when exposed to xenon.
- dysfunction of the respiratory center (including bronchial asthma);
- bradycardia; (slow heart rate)
- severe degrees of circulatory failure (second degree and higher);
- increased intracranial pressure;
- conditions accompanied by severe depression of the central nervous system (alcohol poisoning, sleeping pills, narcotic analgesics, psychotropic drugs);
- infectious diseases accompanied by high fever;
- bleeding (nasal, gastrointestinal tract, menstrual cycle);
- pregnancy and lactation period.
How to carry out the xenon treatment procedure at the Dial-Dent Center.
1. The doctor of the Dial-Dent Family Dental Center determines whether there are indications for xenon treatment.
2. A conversation is held with the patient about all the nuances of xenon treatment.
3. Depending on the situation, the doctor plans the xenon treatment procedure: duration, xenon gas concentration, etc. The doctor also plans to carry out dental procedures dependent on xenon therapy.
4. Special equipment is rolled up to the dental chair. The chair reclines to an almost horizontal position. A soft pillow and, if necessary, a disposable blanket are provided. The patient is offered a mask for breathing xenon gas. The patient can hold the mask on his face himself. This method is suitable for particularly anxious patients who need a sense of control over the situation. We recommend the second method, when the mask is secured to the patient’s face with special straps and held without the help of the patient’s hands. The second method allows you to relax more. Even if the mask is held on the patient's head using rubber straps, this does not prevent the patient from easily removing it at any time by simply pulling the mask.
5. If the purpose of the xenon therapy procedure is further dental manipulation, then the duration of the procedure is usually 5 minutes.
6. The patient’s mask is removed and the necessary dental procedures are performed. During dental procedures, the patient does not breathe xenon gas.
7. At the end of dental procedures, for relaxation after treatment, you can still breathe xenon, since gas remains in the device.

- In 1992, research on medical xenon for anesthesia began in Russia (N.E. Burov).

- Since 2002, xenon began to be used in the form of short inhalations in narcology, neurology and other branches of medicine by anesthesiologists.
- In 2011, Federal Law 323 was passed in Russia on the basis that this technology can be used by certified medical workers (including dentists) who have undergone special training in the use of xenon inhalations to relieve pain and pain syndromes.
- In 2010, the company “NC “Biology Gas Service” developed a dental device for xenon inhalation “STAKI” (does not belong to the class of anesthesia devices), using the drug “XeMed” produced in Russia.

Xenon anesthesia has long been used in practical medicine. This is one of the safest methods of pain relief for the patient, but this type of anesthesia has not yet become widespread. Let's figure out why this happens, what are the reasons that prevent its use everywhere.
What is it, advantages and disadvantages
Xenon anesthesia is one of the methods of inhalation anesthesia. Various gases are used for general anesthesia, for example, nitrous oxide, fluorotane, but they are to a certain extent toxic to the body, unlike xenon. Xenon is also included in the group of inhalational anesthetics. It began to be studied back in 1940, and the data on its use is amazing.
This is one of the rare substances that does not lower blood pressure during anesthesia. There is, of course, Ketamine, but it has many side effects. Xenon anesthesia does not cause side effects from the liver and kidneys, since xenon does not participate in the metabolic reactions of the body. In addition, the patient can be removed from it in a few minutes, which is indispensable during surgical interventions on the brain.
The disadvantage of xenon anesthesia is its high cost. Therefore, for anesthesia it is necessary to use anesthesia machines with a closed circuit, where xenon is supplied along with oxygen. Moreover, the xenon content in the mixture must be at least 70%, since at this concentration sleep and the surgical stage of pain relief occur.
In a closed circuit it is difficult to maintain the level of oxygen and other gases. But during breathing, carbon dioxide is formed and the gas mixture for xenon anesthesia must be constantly cleared of it. This requires special devices of complex design, equipped with gas analyzers. Even minor disturbances in the composition of the gas mixture can lead to hypoxia and hypercapnia.
The in-line method of xenon anesthesia is also used, when the patient is constantly supplied with a fresh mixture, the exhaust gas is collected and only then is it purified for reuse. In such cases, long-term operations require large supplies of respiratory gas.
Indications and contraindications
There are practically no contraindications to xenon anesthesia; it is the drug of choice for surgical interventions in people with chronic somatic diseases, when the risk of anesthesia is high.
Xenon anesthesia is indicated for patients if it is necessary to quickly awaken the patient after an intervention, for example, in neurosurgery, when immediately after the operation it is necessary to check its effectiveness, reflexes, and vision.
It has also found its application in short-term interventions in outpatient settings. The reason for this is the patient’s rapid awakening after it. Thus, xenon anesthesia is used quite often in dentistry, and in order to achieve an analgesic effect, it can be used in combination with local anesthesia.
Sometimes xenon anesthesia in a 1:1 ratio of xenon and oxygen is used for heart attacks. Pain sensations are significantly reduced, the patient calms down, and in many cases this helps to stop the further development of the disease.
Carrying out
Xenon anesthesia requires expensive equipment with a closed circuit. During it, strict control over the gas content in the respiratory mixture is necessary to prevent hypoxia and hypercapnia.
The procedure is no different from inhalation anesthesia with nitrous oxide. With the mask method of pain relief, the surgical stage begins within 4-5 minutes. To ensure that fluctuations in the concentration of xenon in the blood do not cause awakening or pain, analgesics are additionally administered, and sedatives are included in the premedication.
Recovery from anesthesia has its own characteristics, since xenon is quickly eliminated by the lungs, in about 13-15 respiratory cycles. Its concentration in the lungs after switching off the respiratory mixture may increase, which causes diffusion hypoxia. Therefore, it is necessary to continue forced ventilation for several minutes.
The use of xenon anesthesia, one of the safest methods of pain relief, is becoming increasingly popular in practical medicine. The development of modern anesthesia machines for the recycling of expensive xenon will make it possible to use it on a large scale.

Xenon (Xe) is an inert monatomic gas without color, odor or taste. Xenon in dentistry
Higher concentrations of xenon up to 70% cause general anesthesia (narcosis) within 5 minutes of gas inhalation. Use of xenon in dental patients
Currently, local anesthesia during dental procedures does not always give a 100% result. What can prevent a high-quality anesthetic from turning off pain receptors?
