Herpes after the flu

Truths and myths about herpes - Flu and colds

During the fall flu season, many of us suffer from “colds” on our lips. How can this “harmless” problem turn out and how to get rid of it? Elena IONOVA - 10/31/2007

Table of contents:

Does it only affect people with weak immune systems?

Sergey GARUSOV, virologist:

— In fact, herpes is a very contagious infection: 90% of the population are its carriers. This is a viral infection, and it is easy to catch it regardless of your immune system. The herpes virus is transmitted through:

Saliva. Moreover, one savory kiss with a person who has a “cold” on the lip is usually enough to cause infection.

Household items. For example, don’t even think about sipping tea from the mug of a friend with herpetic rashes.

And, of course, sexual intercourse. It goes without saying that you should not “allow” a partner who has genital herpes to your body. But it is also risky to have sex with a person who has herpes on the lips. The virus is especially active and contagious during the period of external manifestations.

During the period of remission, the herpes virus lives in the nerve ganglia - intervertebral ganglia, and during the period of exacerbation it gives skin rashes.

What if the “cold” comes up often?

Exacerbation of herpes virus infection is provoked by:

Overheating (“colds” on the lips is a frequent companion of tourists who have undergone acclimatization).

Other viruses and infections. It often accompanies ARVI, flu, and sore throat.

If there is no “reason” for herpetic manifestations (in the form of the flu, for example), the “sores” themselves occupy an increasingly larger area, heal slowly, rashes occur frequently (once or more a month), perhaps the cause is a serious systemic disease.

You need to take a general and biochemical blood test and preferably undergo a hormone test. It would be a good idea to get tested for hepatitis.

And why should we actually be afraid of him?

- Of course, there is no horror in the fact that once a year during a flu epidemic you get a “cold” on your lips. Physicians are particularly concerned about genital herpes. If left untreated or treated incorrectly, it often causes serious complications, including:

Infertility. It has been proven that the herpes virus affects reproductive cells (sperm heads in men and eggs in women).

Herpetic lesions of the eyes up to blindness.

Lesions of the nervous system and brain - herpetic neuritis and encephalitis.

Lung lesions - herpetic pneumonia.

Liver lesions - herpetic hepatitis.

What is the fastest way to get rid of blisters on your lips?

Blisters on the lips are more of an aesthetic problem for most people. Therefore, the main task is to get rid of them as soon as possible. It makes no sense to pick them off, they will appear again, and besides, there will be a scar. But you can speed up death in the following ways:

Lubricate the affected area with acyclovir-based ointment (this substance suppresses the activity of the virus).

If you don’t have ointment on hand, folk remedies will help reduce itching:

Apply a tampon soaked in cold tea or coffee to the sore spot.

Vodka or whiskey - not inside, but again in the form of lotions.

Lotions with valerian or Corvalol are also good.

Herpes causes chickenpox and. schizophrenia?

There are 7 types of herpes viruses found in humans.

Herpes simplex type I is the most common cause of blisters on the lips.

Herpes simplex type II - in most cases causes genital problems.

Varicella zoster virus (chickenpox in childhood) and herpes zoster virus type III.

Epstein-Barr virus, type IV virus, causes infectious mononucleosis.

Cytomegalovirus - type V.

The meaning of types VI and VII is not entirely clear. They are believed to play a role in chronic fatigue syndrome, the sudden onset of rashes. There are even suggestions about the role of herpes in the development of schizophrenia.

How do different types of herpes manifest?

1. White itchy blisters appear on the lips or around the mouth. If you pick them off, they only grow larger and fill up again. They usually go away within a few days.

- It's simple herpes. Usually occurs against the background of reduced immunity: with a cold, hypothermia or, conversely, with overheating, stress and fatigue. That is, as soon as the body gives up before infections, the virus manifests itself in the form of blisters and ulcers.

2. Bubbles appeared on the genitals. Itching, burning, redness are annoying. With an active process, the lymph nodes may become enlarged. In women, herpes causes inflammatory diseases of the vagina, appendages, and uterus.

— Genital herpes is mainly caused by a type II virus. The virus persists in the cervix in women, and in the genitourinary tract in men. By the way, bubbles are a common, but not necessary, manifestation. There may simply be itching, burning, swelling.

3. Pain in the eye, burning, stinging, blurred vision are manifestations of ocular herpes. Often infection occurs from a “cold” on the lips. Therefore, you should not touch your eyes if you have previously touched the bubbles on your face.

— Unlike nasolabial herpes, the course of ocular herpes is more severe and can lead to serious complications. A herpetic infection affects the cornea of the eye (herpetic keratitis).

4. The childhood disease chickenpox is also herpes. Mostly children under 7 years of age get sick, adults rarely. The main symptom is a red rash. First, spots appear, then they turn into bubbles, then dry out.

— Chickenpox in children is easy. Adults are more likely to have a high body temperature and a general deterioration in their condition. After recovery, as a rule, no marks remain on the skin.

5. On the body - on the sides along the ribs and in the chest area - bubbles have appeared, which are located in a strip or string, repeating the course of large nerves. Before the blisters, there may be a tugging pain and heaviness in this area.

— This shingles, or Herpes Zoster, occurs only in those who have had chickenpox. A virus dormant in the body can become active - after the flu, for example, and give such manifestations many years after chickenpox.

6. The combination of five main signs - sore throat, enlarged liver and spleen, temperature, enlarged lymph nodes and a specific blood test - indicates infectious mononucleosis.

— It is caused by the herpes virus type IV. Mostly young and middle-aged people are affected. Infection occurs by airborne droplets. After recovery, stable immunity is formed.

The following will help you accurately determine the type of virus:

Express method - based on fluorescent blood antibodies.

Serological research methods.

Will herpes help kill cancer?

Scientists have long been struggling with how to tame the herpes virus and make it work for humans.

Experts from Ohio State University claim that a genetically modified herpes simplex virus will destroy cancer cells. Moreover, the virus can not only kill cancer cells, but also prevent the development of tumors. Three years of experiments on experimental mice were successful.

Does herpes on the lips mean that the cold has come out?

Not entirely true. Herpetic rashes on the lips mean that there are external manifestations of an infection “walking” in the blood. These external manifestations of herpes can appear not only on the lips, but also on the mucous membranes of the genital organs, on the oral mucosa (aphthous herpetic stomatitis), on the tonsils (herpetic sore throat). Herpes infection is chronic, up to 90% of the world's population is infected with it, and it is impossible to completely get rid of it. External manifestations occur when immunity decreases or when other diseases occur. The virus is activated, and the titer of antibodies in the blood increases, and visual signs of a herpes infection appear.

Herpes is a viral disease (lifelong, by the way) that is transmitted mainly through contact, including sexual intercourse. It is currently impossible to cure herpes. Herpetic manifestations most often occur either on the lips, on the face or on the labia of women. It is useless to smear IT with ointments, even Zavirax, at least something: Herpes without treatment lasts a week, but with treatment it lasts 7 days and that says it all :-) Considering the fact that once it enters the human body, the herpes simplex virus circulates in the blood for the rest of its life - tin, then its manifestations in the form of skin rashes or ulcerations appear, as a rule, after suffering from colds against the background of decreased immunity. Everything is very simple - the body spends its “immune forces” to fight, for example, a cold (ARVI, ARI, Influenza, etc.) and then the herpes simplex virus “blooms” and this happens “according to the laws of the genre” at the end of a cold or other diseases, if herpes appears on the lips, it means the patient has already actually recovered, I know it from myself, and as a doctor I understand this. Then wait a week until the “fever” on the lips goes away and everything is fine - you can “go all out” :-) The photo shows the standard appearance of herpes in the “bubbles” phase, which will soon turn into a simple ulcer:

Herpes is a viral disease, there are two types: the first type, simple herpes - which breaks out on the lips and the second type - genital.

If herpes appears on the lips, it is partly considered a cold, although it can also appear on other parts of the body, for example on the membranes of the nose. Alas. getting rid of herpes forever is not realistic, herpes can be silent for the time being and appear one day, it often appears when the immune system is weakened or a person is hypothermic, and the appearance of herpes can even be provoked by ordinary stress; bad habits.

Symptoms of viral herpes on the lips may be the following:

And other general symptoms may also be present like -

When herpes appears on the lips, by the way, treatment in the form of ointments against herpes is -

acyclovir (analogue - Zovirax); cyclovir, and also, by the way, strengthen the immune system, strengthening the immune system - the disease goes away faster than if nothing was done at all.

My family always said that, how good it was that the cold came out and didn’t stay in the body.

It was believed that you would definitely not get sick then, since the virus had found its way out.

There is no scientific basis for this, but in life everything is exactly like that. All that remains is to heal your cold (in other words, herpes) and you will be healthy.

There may be different options here, it is not necessary that you have a weak immune system, although this option is logical. Every summer I go to a salt lake and the next day after the lake, herpes appears on my lips, it’s just that the salt remains on my lips and they become very chapped, but I don’t get sick with anything, it’s a paradox. It could just be an allergic reaction to something, that's all, it doesn't have to be a cold or flu.

Herpes is a viral disease. The connection with a cold is only due to the weakening of the body, and the virus has more opportunities to manifest itself. A lot of people, even if they have a very severe cold, do not know what herpes is.

Herpes on the lips is a consequence of a cold or overheating in the sun, in any case the result of problems in the body caused by external factors. Of course, in this case, immunity decreases

That's what they say. But in general, Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease and appears when the immune system is weakened.

The herpes virus and colds are two different things. In principle, they are not related to each other, so it is impossible to judge a cold from herpes on the lips and other places. The cold doesn't go anywhere.

All we see on the lips is the herpes virus activated in the body. And it is activated due to decreased immunity and generally poor condition of the body due to a cold. When a person is healthy, herpes sleeps, moves around the body and waits for an opportunity that may never come.

No, the appearance of a fever on the lips usually indicates that the immune system has weakened once the virus has begun to act. But it has nothing to do with colds. Colds and colds, which we colloquially call herpes blisters on and around the lips, have nothing to do with it.

Herpes and colds - treated in parallel

The herpes virus is in the body of every person in a latent state. It is incurable, but always appears when the immune system is weakened by a cold or flu. In the latter case, herpes on the face affects large areas of the skin and nasal mucosa. What is proteflazid, how is it related to acute respiratory infections and herpes: advice from an immunologist.

ARVI, influenza, acute respiratory infections suppress the immune system in every possible way, which makes the body weak and susceptible to infections. It is at this moment that the herpes virus wakes up in the body and actively multiplies. And in the morning you see watery blisters on your lips, near your nose or on your cheeks, in the area of which you feel unpleasant itching and pain.

With the flu, the reappearance of herpes is difficult: intoxication, a significant area of damage on the skin. A common cold also shows symptoms of this virus, but much less compared to those with the flu.

The herpes virus is present in the body of every person, but it is not activated in everyone with the onset of acute respiratory infections. It has been noticed that with age it behaves more aggressively, is more clearly expressed on the skin and goes away much longer.

How to deal with herpes in acute respiratory infections

To say that there is a medicine that will permanently destroy the herpes virus in the body is to lie. But thanks to special antiviral drugs, it is possible to suppress HSV-I (a type of herpes that appears on the face). Usually the reappearance of herpes is treated with ointment; in more complex cases, the doctor prescribes tablets.

However, in the case of acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections, ointment alone is not enough. From the first day HSV-I appears on the face, use drugs that stimulate the synthesis of interferons. They provide both immunomodulatory and antiviral effects. One such medicine is Proteflazide, which contains plant extracts. The drug effectively fights acute and chronic forms of herpes, strengthens the immune system, and stops the multiplication of the virus in the body.

The course of treatment is designed for a long period, since the immune system is gradually restored with the help of proteflazid.

“I am often asked which drug is best to take to strengthen the immune system for preventive purposes and during seasonal colds. If you go to the pharmacy, they will recommend herbal tinctures of ginseng, rosea rhodiola, eleutherococcus, but it is better to choose a complex herbal medicine - proteflazide. In addition, it fights well against the herpes virus, which often appears during ARVI. Can this drug cause harm? Take it for no more than a month, and the maximum side effect is heartburn,” says immunologist Nazar O.V.

In order not to be treated, you must not get sick

Prevention has not been canceled, so follow the following tips and forget about colds and herpes.

During the seasonal period of exacerbation of acute respiratory viral infections, influenza and acute respiratory infections, do not visit mass gatherings of people, where the infection walks around as if at home. Doctors are unanimous in their opinion: if your immunity is weakened, undergo a full examination of your body to identify hidden viruses, including HSV-I. Do not self-medicate, especially do not prescribe yourself antiviral and antibiotic drugs. Eat as healthy as possible. The diet should include fresh vegetables and fruits, and less foods rich in harmful sugar. Drink plenty of fluids, such as herbal teas based on lemon balm, sage, linden, and clover.

Herpes for colds

Herpes is a small blistering rash, most often on the lips or nose, popularly called “fever.” If not, then consider yourself very lucky.

Firstly, herpes is a sign of a decrease in the body’s defenses, and if it appears 2-3 times a year, this already indicates a significant decrease in immunity. Secondly, having become infected with herpes, a person becomes the “master” of this disease for life.

The causative agent of herpes is a virus, an intracellular parasite. Translated from Greek, “herpes” means “crawling.” Herpes affects a human cell, being located in its gene apparatus. Therefore, when cells divide, the virus is transmitted to other cells with all the hereditary information. This is precisely the reason that a person who has become infected with this virus will never get rid of it.

In some cases, the herpes virus does not manifest itself in any way and remains in the body all its life in an inactive (latent) state. Usually in this state it lives in the peripheral nervous system in the spinal region.

The herpes virus is “awakened” by overheating, hypothermia; menstruation, pregnancy, alcohol, mental trauma, the most common infectious diseases, including those that weaken the immune system.

There are seven types of herpes virus that pose a danger to humans. The herpes virus is transmitted by airborne droplets.

The most common representatives of the seven dangerous herpes viruses are herpes simplex, type 1, and herpes type 2. “Colds” on the lips, stomatitis, rashes on the skin of the face are a consequence of infection with the first type of virus.

Herpes simplex appears in the form of blisters with serous contents near the mouth and nose, on the cheeks, on the lips, in the mouth and on the conjunctiva - the lining of the eye. The disease is accompanied by poor health and appetite, fatigue, fever, aching in the sacrum and lower back, as well as irritability and poor sleep. The most aggressive, as a rule, is the initial attack of the virus with a rash of large numbers of bubbles.

During an exacerbation of the disease, the herpes virus is transmitted through personal belongings, toys, underwear, soap, cream, toothpaste, shared utensils, and cosmetics. An ordinary kiss on the cheek can infect both a child and an adult with herpes.

Scientists say that the herpes simplex virus is found in tears, saliva, blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and mother's milk.

Treatment of herpes

A herpes outbreak can be prevented if treatment is started promptly. For example, if one of your family members or friends with whom you were in contact developed herpes on the lips, immediately consult a virologist. Unfortunately, this seemingly trivial disease quite often leads to death. Herpes ranks second after influenza among viral infections in terms of the number of deaths.

Some scientists claim that the herpes virus is associated with cancer, often accompanies AIDS, and is sometimes the cause of death in AIDS patients.

The modern disease chronic fatigue syndrome is also believed to be caused by the herpes virus.

You need to be treated for an exacerbation of herpes by a virologist. An experienced doctor can help quickly cope with the virus, anticipate and prevent complications. However, no one can cure herpes yet, despite the fact that work is being done in this direction and the drug Zovirax has been synthesized, which finds cells containing the virus in the body and blocks its reproduction. The creator of Zovirax, Gertrude Ammon, was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Folk remedies for the treatment of herpes

Since self-medication for herpes is not advisable, folk remedies that can be used are those that reduce the “area” of rashes and, accordingly, promote their rapid drying without the formation of a rough crust.

Fir oil for the treatment of herpes

As soon as the disease relapses, lubricate the area of skin where the cold appears with fir oil . You will feel a slight burning sensation in this area. Repeat lubrication after 2 hours and at night. During the day, take restorative antiviral tea. Although it is not specific against the herpes virus, it gives good results.

Tea against viruses

Take juniper (1 part), lemon balm (3 parts), bird cherry (3 parts), mix and brew tea in a porcelain teapot at the rate of 1 spoon of the mixture per 1 glass of boiling water, drink 1 glass of hot tea with honey or pureed viburnum with sugar, 3-4 times a day.

You can try propolis tea.

Tea with propolis against viruses

Boil chamomile flowers (1 tsp per glass), let stand for 15 minutes, strain and add 1 tsp. 10% alcohol tincture of propolis , stir and drink in sips.

Do this 2 times a day for 3-4 days. Apply the same tincture to the rashes.

After lubricating the rashes with both fir oil and propolis tincture, apply on. affected areas chamomile cream or calendula ointment. You will feel how your skin will gratefully accept them, it will soften, relax and prevent the formation of a tight crust, which in itself is very unpleasant.

It is believed that it is a good idea to lubricate the affected areas with cologne or 70% ethyl alcohol for prevention.

Antiviral drug V.N. Sergeeva

This is a unique drug for viral diseases: influenza, ARVI, herpes zoster; herpes, which allows you to “break off” the disease in a day or two if you start taking the drug at the first symptoms of the disease (chilling, aching, etc.), and cure the disease 3-4 times faster than usual treatment.

Infuse the collection with 0.5 liters of vodka, placing the bottle with a stopper in a pan of hot water for 1 hour, changing the water twice. Drink 2 tsp. 3 times a day before meals. The drug is recommended for adults. Discuss its use with your doctor. Apply to rashes three times a day.

Eight misconceptions about herpes

As autumn approaches, more and more people with characteristic rashes on their lips appear. It would seem that this is a common and well-known, absolutely not mysterious disease, but many patients know nothing about herpes, except that “it’s a fever on the lips.” It should be noted that this situation is typical not only for Russia. Thus, employees of the College of Dentistry at Columbia University, USA, collected all the most common misconceptions and myths about herpes infection and tried to debunk them.

"Manifestations of herpes on the lips"

Herpes as a disease has been known for a long time. It was first described by Hippocrates, who introduced the term “herpes” itself (from the Greek word “herpein” - “to crawl”) due to the ability of herpetic sores to “spread” to the sides of the primary vesicle. Herpetic lesions of the skin and mucous membranes were well known not only to doctors of antiquity and the Middle Ages, but also to ordinary people, because herpes has always been one of the most common infections. Scientists isolated the herpes simplex virus (HSV) only in 1924.

Over many centuries of “communication” with herpes, this disease has acquired many myths and misconceptions. Here are the most common ones:

• Herpes is not contagious - quite the contrary. Herpes is a highly contagious (contagious) infection, the causative agent of which is the herpes simplex virus. In the case of herpes on the lips and oral mucosa, this is the 1st type of virus. The disease is transmitted by airborne droplets (coughing, sneezing, talking) and household contact (kissing, sharing utensils, lipstick, mouthpiece);

• Herpes is a manifestation of a “cold” - in fact, herpes is an independent disease. It is usually activated during hypothermia, but can also occur during stress, including dental treatment, lip trauma, overwork, exacerbation of chronic diseases, and decreased immunity. Herpes can also occur in hot weather when the body overheats or as a result of prolonged exposure to the sun. Dental interventions, during which there is a strong stretching of the corners of the mouth, can also sometimes cause an exacerbation of the disease;

• If rashes appear on the lips due to acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) or influenza, it means that the cold will soon pass - a common point of view, but it has nothing to do with reality. In fact, the rash means that the previous respiratory infection weakened the immune system, and this caused an exacerbation of herpes;

• If the rashes disappear - the herpes is cured - this would be wonderful, but, unfortunately, it is impossible to remove the virus from the body. After the first contact with the virus, it penetrates the sensitive nerve endings and is integrated into the genetic apparatus of neurons. After this, the virus remains with the person for life. The causative agent of herpes can remain in an inactive, “dormant” state for a long time, exacerbating from time to time under the influence of provoking factors. Therefore, more than 90% of people have the herpes virus, but it manifests itself in only 20%;

• You can become infected with herpes only if there are rashes - indeed, in the active phase of the disease, a large number of viral particles are released and the likelihood of infection is higher. But transmission of infection can occur at any time through microtraumas of the skin and mucous membranes. The first signs of herpes are a tingling, burning or itching sensation. This is accompanied by swelling and redness of the red border of the lips or the oral mucosa. Within 24 to 48 hours, one or more tiny blisters appear at the site of the lesion. They soon burst and in their place painful herpetic ulcers form. The ulcers eventually become crusted, which then fall off and new epithelium forms underneath. The active phase of the disease is often accompanied by general malaise, fever, headache, nausea and vomiting. Typically, crusts form within 4 days and completely disappear in 8–10 days;

• The best treatment for herpes is cauterization of sores with alcohol, iodine or brilliant green - cauterization does not affect the herpes virus and its activity, but it is very easy to burn damaged skin and mucous membranes in this way. It is better to carefully lubricate the rash with an antiseptic that does not contain alcohol, for example, an aqueous solution of chlorhexidine, so that a secondary bacterial infection does not occur. And the exacerbation of herpes itself is treated with special antiviral drugs, such as acyclovir (Zovirax®), famciclovir (Famvir®) and valacyclovir (Valtrex®), which prevent the multiplication of the virus. For frequent exacerbations, medications that stimulate the immune system and restoratives, for example, multivitamins, are used;

• Herpes is a harmless disease and only affects the skin of the lips - this is not true. Herpes ranks second in mortality from viral infections, second only to influenza. The herpes simplex virus is integrated into the genome of nerve cells, so rashes can appear wherever there is nervous tissue, therefore, in almost any organ. With a decrease in general and local immunity, herpes can develop in the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and larynx, cornea and conjunctiva of the eye, lymph nodes, internal genital organs, intestines, liver, kidneys, lungs and central nervous system. With herpetic brain damage, most patients die or become disabled;

• There is no way to prevent herpes – fortunately this is not the case. First of all, you should avoid contact with people who have obvious signs of a herpes infection. This is especially true for young children, whose immune systems are still imperfect, and therefore there is a high risk of infection. As a rule, the herpes simplex virus in children causes acute herpetic stomatitis (AHS), which often occurs with high fever, painful rashes in the mouth, and inflammation of the lymph nodes.

The use of antiviral drugs listed above is also effective. It should be noted that you should start taking them (both orally and locally, in the form of ointment applications) when the first symptoms of herpes appear (burning, tingling, etc.). In this way, the development of a clinical picture of infection can be prevented. But if rashes in the form of blisters and ulcers have already appeared, antiviral drugs are ineffective; they will only help to alleviate the course of the disease to some extent.

Using sunscreen on your lips will prevent the appearance of rashes caused by excess sun exposure.

Scientists are currently developing vaccines against HSV, but they will only be effective in people who have not been infected with the herpes virus.

It should be remembered that in case of acute manifestations of a herpetic infection on the lips, in order to avoid aggravation of the symptoms of the disease and infection of others, scheduled visits to the dentist are unacceptable. The exception is acute toothache and herpetic stomatitis in a child, when parents and children contact a specialist in diseases of the oral mucosa for diagnosis and treatment.

Herpes in patients with influenza and acute respiratory infections

The influenza virus actively suppresses the human immune system, contributing to a general weakening of the body. Against this background, the herpes virus is reactivated in the body and actively reproduces, which leads to the clinical manifestation of the infection.

View medications for the treatment of herpes

Studies have shown that it is with influenza that the recurrence of herpes is most severe: a large area of damage, severe intoxication, (In cases of acute respiratory infections, symptoms of herpes also occur, but to a lesser extent than in patients with influenza.

More often, latent (hidden) herpesvirus infection is activated during influenza and acute respiratory infections in people over 35 years of age. So the older you are, the longer and more pronounced the manifestations of herpes will be.

Complications

In some cases, influenza A may be complicated by the occurrence of viral pneumonia (both at the onset of the disease and after visible improvement). One of the causes of pneumonia may be herpes simplex and herpes zoster viruses. If the condition worsens, you must consult a doctor promptly.

Treatment of herpes in patients with influenza and acute respiratory infections

To treat herpetic complications during influenza or acute respiratory infections, specific therapy is used according to the regimen (for example, riboverine). To make treatment effective, drugs such as interferons or interferon inducers are prescribed from the first days of illness.

Also, the treatment complex uses drugs that simultaneously fight viruses and provide an immunomodulatory effect. It is also important to monitor proper nutrition if you have herpes.

"LONG COLD"

For many people, colds last for several weeks. Why is this happening? How to prevent this?

Answered by Tatyana Borisovna Semenova, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Head of the Moscow Herpetic Center.

— Why do some people easily tolerate colds, while others suffer for a long time and with complications? Is it all about the strength of the body?

— General health and the immune system play an important role in how seriously ill a person gets. But a lot depends on what kind of virus he was infected with and whether he has acquired immunity to it. We all remember how strong and healthy young people had a hard time with the so-called swine flu (A/N1H1). The fact is that their body has not encountered this virus before. And the infection itself was very “evil”.

— Can the environmental situation affect the severity of the disease?

— In a number of cases, this phenomenon occurs. It has been noted that the same influenza virus can cause a mild form of illness in a person from one area and lead to much more serious consequences in another.

For example, people can get more seriously ill where the air is dry and heavily polluted. Because of this, the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx becomes dry and becomes a good “gateway” for infection. In addition, colds are often caused not by one virus, but by a combination of them. Because of this, the disease can also occur in an altered form, and it is much more difficult to diagnose and treat.

— How common are such mixed infections?

- They meet quite often. Partly because there are many viruses constantly living in our bodies. A good example in this case is the herpes virus family. Once they penetrate the body, they remain there forever. More than 95% of people are infected with the herpes simplex virus. Many people have as many as 2-3 representatives of this family “living”.

If the immune system is normal, herpes can be in a “dormant” state in the body and not cause health problems for a long time; when the defense weakens, it becomes active. If a person whose herpes is currently worsening comes into contact with someone who has a cold, the likelihood of getting sick increases significantly.

“It seemed to me that everything was exactly the opposite.” That herpes “comes out” as soon as we start coughing or sneezing.

- This happens very often too. The herpes virus can “wake up” when we have a cold. This is why some people invariably develop rashes on their lips after the flu or a runny nose. By the way, in such a situation more serious herpes viruses can become active. In particular, Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. In these cases there is no rash.

But ordinary ARVI drags on for a long time. Complications such as sinusitis or otitis media occur more often. Even after the obvious manifestations of a cold have diminished, a person may still be bothered for a long time by weakness and the so-called “temperature tail,” when the thermometer constantly stays at 37-37.5 C.

— What can be done in such cases?

— In case of a very prolonged cold, it is advisable to undergo a virological examination. It will help clarify which virus is causing the illness and adjust the treatment. In addition, we must remember that viral diseases can be complicated by a bacterial infection. Therefore, if your cold does not go away within five days, you should definitely consult a doctor.

— Are there any differences in the treatment of ordinary and mixed infections?

— For a runny nose without fever and other “mild” colds, you can often get by with home treatment methods. A person is well helped by drinking plenty of fluids, staying in a warm room, honey, propolis, infusions and decoctions of medicinal plants.

For mixed infections, additional treatment with special drugs is usually required. These can be tablets with a universal antiviral effect or special anti-influenza and anti-herpetic drugs. It all depends on the situation.

If a bacterial infection is added to a viral infection, then appropriate antibiotics are necessary. They are selected individually, taking into account the disease and characteristics of the body.

— Will a flu shot help with such a variety of infections?

— Flu is one of the most severe viral diseases. It is dangerous due to its complications, which sometimes develop very quickly. Therefore, it is necessary to get vaccinated. And every year, because immunity to influenza is not developed for a longer period, and the virus itself is constantly changing.

First of all, children, students, teachers and university professors, and doctors need a flu vaccine. People with chronic diseases of the heart, respiratory system, kidneys and diabetes are also at risk for complications of influenza. But they can only be vaccinated at a time when there is no exacerbation of the underlying disease. And with a preliminary consultation with an immunologist.

Of course, getting vaccinated does not guarantee that you won't get sick at all. But the flu is much milder, and the risk of complications is significantly reduced.

— Does it make sense to get a flu shot when the epidemic has already begun?

- If you are not sick yet, it makes sense. Although it is better, of course, to get vaccinated a month and a half before the start of the cold season. In any case, you need to engage in such prevention during a “quiet” period, when you are completely healthy. After the last illness, it is advisable to wait one and a half to two months. Some people may want to have their immunity tested before getting vaccinated. This is a must-do for those who get colds almost every month in cold weather. And also for those who have recently often developed herpes on their lips.

— Is it possible to somehow protect against mixed infections? Will immunomodulators help?

— The current popularity of immunomodulators is a rather dangerous phenomenon. They should not be used uncontrollably. The peculiarity of many of these drugs is their narrow “specialization”. They can stimulate predominantly one of the components of the immune system. And it is impossible to independently determine where exactly the “breakdown” occurred. To do this, you need to conduct a special analysis - an immunogram. And based on it, select a medicine.

If you haven't done this, it's not worth the risk. Otherwise, immunomodulators can lead to even greater disruptions. It is better to prefer drugs that have a wide spectrum of protective effects, for example Viferon, Gripferon. They contain interferon, a special protein that makes cells immune to the virus. Such medications are available in the form of drops, suppositories, and gels. Interferon ointment is a more modern and effective alternative to traditional oxolinic ointment, which many people use to protect themselves before going out.

You can also use medications that stimulate the body's production of its protective protein. For example, Lavomax. Today, other schemes for the prevention of colds and flu have been developed. They usually use one of the drugs with universal antiviral activity. For example, Kagocel or Arbidol.

— Can vitamins and homeopathic medicines help?

— There are different recommendations for the use of vitamins. If we are talking about multivitamin complexes, then in the cold season it is useful to take them for prevention. But it is advisable to combine the intake with a nutritious diet, so they will work better. But it’s not worth preventing and treating colds or flu with ascorbic acid. In large doses it can cause side effects. Several studies have been conducted on homeopathic medicines. In most cases, people rated their effectiveness against colds and flu positively. And although they do not provide 100% protection against viruses, they can be used.

Herpes igg is in second place after the flu

How unpleasant it is to feel itching on your lips, developing into blisters for two weeks. The bubbles fill with liquid and then become crusty. The appearance is ruined. But this is not the main thing. According to WHO, herpes is in second place, after the group leading to death.

Herpes is caused by viruses that are part of the herpesvirus family. Herpes is an insidious disease. Its viruses can constantly reside in the human body, causing infection when the immune system is weakened.

A person can become infected with herpes through microcracks, wounds, and mucous membranes. Once in the body, it enters the central nervous system through the blood. And this is dangerous because it settles there forever.

When diagnosed, they determine what kind of herpes you have: herpes igg or herpes igm. Herpes igm appears first, and then herpes igg.

If you have a predisposition to herpes, you should consult a doctor, as it is sometimes very difficult to cure, since it penetrates the central nervous system.

Distinctive features of colds and herpes: differences in treatment

People have the idea of the herpes virus as a manifestation of a cold. Not every person has any idea how to distinguish them from each other. The two inflammatory processes are interrelated, but they are not the same thing.

First, there is a decline in the body’s defenses, only then herpes formations appear on the skin. A cold appears in the place where hypothermia occurred. This is evidenced by enlarged lymph nodes.

Herpes is found in the blood of an infected person and appears periodically whenever immunity decreases. More often the virus chooses the same place. A relapse can occur at any time; inflammation can be prevented by following practical recommendations for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Differences in inflammation

Colds form in the form of reddish pimples. Touching such places is accompanied by pain, and abscesses with pustules are often observed. The duration of inflammation corresponds to the period of immune restoration.

The manifestations of colds and herpes are often confused. However, acne can be cured permanently by following disease prevention measures.

But the viral nature cannot be destroyed; it will manifest itself periodically throughout a person’s life.

Herpes forms an inflammation of the skin, accompanied by reddish pimples, which have the form of blisters with liquid. The affected area may gradually spread across the surface. The appearance of the problem area looks unpleasant, and residual erosion worries for some time.

An infectious form of inflammation exists in human blood. Measures to localize skin manifestations do not get rid of the virus itself. Doctors say that it is impossible to completely get rid of it. Methods were used when a complete blood transfusion was performed, but a relapse of inflammation occurred again.

How does inflammation occur?

The herpes virus has up to eight types. Most often people deal with two:

  • appears on the face: lips and eyes - HSV-1;
  • inflammation forms on the genitals - HSV-2.

The moment of the acute stage of the complication may be accompanied by pain from touching the skin; on the genitals, discomfort is caused by a simple trip to the toilet. Redness may form in the urethral canal.

A cold is different in that it appears on the surface of the skin, the blood does not suffer. It can be dangerous in cases where inflammatory processes form in the temple area, eye or ear canal. The purulent formation at the time of rupture can affect the optic nerve, auditory membrane or parts of the brain. Partial loss of hearing and vision may occur, or the functioning of the head may be disrupted.

The symptoms of herpes are less dangerous, but cause significant discomfort for both women and men. The fluid inside the reddish areolas is bacterial and can infect others if they come into contact with it. When the blister bursts, it spreads the infection to surrounding tissues, which provokes new lesions.

Causes of complications

Both types of disease arise as a result of a decrease in the body’s defenses, as a result of many factors. Colds on the lips can be a manifestation of a more dangerous disease - syphilis. An ulcer on the lip forms after the incubation period of the disease is 5 weeks.

The skin on the lips is very sensitive to hypothermia, lack of vitamins and minerals in the body, and fungal infections. Such conditions can be eliminated using simple methods by identifying the source of the problem. By influencing the cause of the ailment, the external manifestations of a cold are removed.

Lip tissue is treated with solutions and ointments to enhance the treatment effect. Herpes is a chronic form of inflammation. The virus itself lives in the nerve endings in a dormant form, waiting for the immune system to reduce its influence and give free rein to action.

According to the recommendations of doctors: you should not wait for the formation of watery accumulations on the blister; treatment should begin immediately.

The problem area needs to be stopped and the negative impact of the virus on the daily rhythm of life reduced. To do this, drugs are prescribed to enhance immunity and antiviral agents are used: ointments, suppositories, tablets.

Sources of viral relapse

The appearance of herpes blisters is preceded by painful conditions:

  • colds, flu;
  • infectious infection: parasitic type, HIV;
  • long-term nervous disorders, stress, heavy physical activity;
  • acute stages of diseases of internal organs;
  • endocrine chronic problems;
  • digestive system disorders;
  • bad habits: smoking and alcoholism;
  • severe allergic reactions.

Exhausting the body with diets leads to health problems. The tone decreases, which leads to the formation of depression. This becomes the source of an unpleasant surprise in the form of herpes on the lips. The body should not lose more than 3 kg per month to cope with germs.

Treatment methods for lip inflammation

You need to get rid of skin disorders for the following reasons:

  • the appearance of a swollen lip is unpleasant;
  • with herpes, you can infect loved ones with a kiss;
  • blisters and pimples cause pain that prevents you from working, relaxing and doing the things you love;
  • The issue of rashes in pregnant women is relevant: herpes needs to be extinguished before conception, the virus can affect the health of the unborn child.
To get rid of herpes use:
  • drug treatment of the affected area;
  • immunomodulatory agents;
  • taking vitamins;
  • It is also possible to use vaccination.

Doctors' opinions differ on the need to use the latter method, because the body already has some amount of the virus, and if an additional portion is introduced, undesirable consequences may occur.

If the desire to get rid of the disease is overwhelming, then before vaccination you should consult several specialists. It may be best to try less painful options first.

Localization of blisters and pimples

Means for increasing the body's defenses have proven themselves well: lykopid, cycloferon, groprinosin, genferon. Doctors can prescribe antiviral drugs: valvir, penciclovir, ganciclovir.

The choice of drugs should be made together with the attending physician. Self-treatment may result in additional costs to combat the consequences.

Zovirax ointment is commercially available. This is an effective remedy for eliminating herpes on the lip. It is an antiviral drug, sensitive to cytomegalovirus, lichen. Used for inflammation of the cornea of the eye.

Let's look at how to treat colds and herpes on the skin using medications:

  • The antiviral drug Panavir can be used for colds. Capable of increasing the protective function of cells and killing the herpes virus. Used for papillomas and tick-borne encephalitis. It is also available in the form of a solution for intravenous use.
  • Acyclovir is an antiviral, antiherpetic drug. Can be used as a means of combating chickenpox and lichen. Apply to the skin every hour to achieve the best effect.
