Inhalations for bronchitis are often the remedy that helps cope with a long-term disease. Inhalation therapy can significantly reduce the symptoms of acute and chronic bronchitis and improve the quality of life.
How and when is it time to resort to inhalation treatment? What drugs are best to use for inhalation for bronchitis? Let's try to figure it out and answer these frequently asked questions.
Bronchitis: when is cough a diagnosis?
Acute bronchitis is a clinical syndrome that is accompanied by inflammation of the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles. Acute bronchitis in children is usually a consequence of a viral respiratory tract infection. This is why antibiotics have no effect on bronchitis - after all, they only act on bacteria. Exceptions are extremely rare cases of primary bacterial bronchitis.
The diagnosis of chronic bronchitis is made to patients who continue to have a productive cough for one month or more despite drug treatment.
The basis of effective therapy lies in ensuring sufficient air humidity, reducing the viscosity of sputum and combating the clinical manifestations of bronchitis. Sometimes treatment of bronchitis with inhalations is almost the only acceptable means of combating the disease.
Benefits of inhalation for bronchitis
The inhalation route of drug administration has many advantages over the oral and even parenteral routes. The positive aspects of inhalation include:
- rapid absorption of drugs.
— creation of the maximum concentration of the active substance directly at the site of the lesion.
In order for the drug to start working, it must enter the affected organs and tissues. In many ways, the effectiveness of drugs depends on the ability to penetrate into the pathological focus. The maximum concentrations of drugs that are delivered by inhalation appear at the right time in the right place, which means they immediately begin to work, which is important for acute and chronic bronchitis in adults and children.
— increase in the total active surface of the drug.
Inhalation medications: first aid for bronchitis
The doctor selects the medicine for inhalation based on the patient’s medical history. Let's look at specific groups of drugs that are most often used for inhalation for acute and chronic bronchitis.
In the etiology of bronchitis, the leading place is occupied by a viral infection. Inhalation administration of antiseptics is an excellent opportunity to cope with the virus directly in the replication zone. For inhalations for bronchitis, including in children, miramistin is usually used, less often - chlorhexidine, dioxidine and furatsilin solution.
The main purpose of administering drugs of this group is to combat the inflammatory process, which triggers the pathogenetic mechanism of bronchitis. For this purpose, tinctures, extracts and essential oils of medicinal plants are often used, in particular, eucalyptus, calendula, sage, pine, fir, and tea tree. Complex herbal remedies (Rotokan) have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.
Mucolytics and expectorants
This group of drugs helps to thin thick mucus and also stimulates its elimination by increasing the contractility of the bronchi. One of the most popular and effective drugs used as a mucolytic for inhalation is Ambroxol. There is a dosage form of Ambroxol, which is completely ready for use in nebulizers. It has been established that the maximum effectiveness of the drug is achieved after 3-4 weeks of continuous treatment.
Drugs that stimulate local immunity should be prescribed by a doctor. To increase the immune response, interferon preparations, as well as Derinat, are used. Before use, interferon-containing products are dissolved in water, the temperature of which should not be higher than 37 degrees.
In some cases, doctors prescribe inhalations with glucocorticosteroid drugs, in particular dexamethasone. These drugs have a pronounced anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effect.
To combat bacterial infections in bronchitis, inhalations with antibiotic solutions are used, in particular Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Fluimucil and other drugs.
This group of drugs is prescribed for coughs with an asthmatic component, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Berodual, Berotek, Ventolin are used as solutions for inhalation for obstructive bronchitis, either alone or in combination with other agents. Bronchodilators promote dilation of the bronchi and thus prevent bronchospasm.
In case of severe swelling of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, inhalations with vasoconstrictor drugs are used: naphthyzine, xylometazoline, oxymetazoline.
Inhalations for hydration are easy
You cannot ignore the simplest and most affordable means of inhalation therapy. These include alkaline solutions, as well as sodium chloride solution. Despite the apparent simplicity of the active ingredients, inhalations with alkaline solutions are quite effective for bronchitis: they have a pronounced moisturizing effect. But it is known that excessive dryness of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract can contribute to the development of the inflammatory process in the lower sections, even pneumonia.
The most popular alkaline solutions for inhalation include:
- a solution of sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, which is prepared before use at the rate of 1 teaspoon of soda per liter of boiled water;
- solutions of alkaline mineral waters such as Borjomi, Essentuki-4, etc. A few hours before use, it is recommended to open a bottle of water so that carbon dioxide evaporates.
No less well known are inhalations with saline solutions:
- isotonic sodium chloride solution (concentration 0.9%) - saline solution for inhalation;
- sea salt;
- mixed solutions of soda and sodium chloride.
The main purpose of salt inhalation is to moisturize the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and thin the mucus. In addition, sodium chloride solution is used to dissolve other medications.
Types of inhalation therapy for bronchitis
Depending on the device used for inhalation, there are:
The effect is achieved using steam generated by steam inhalers. The greatest effectiveness is achieved when treating bronchitis with steam inhalations using essential oils and medicinal herbs;
The procedure is carried out using a simple heat-moisture inhaler - an affordable device for treating bronchitis at home. Alkaline solutions and herbal remedies are usually used for warm-moist inhalations.
Nebulizers are capable of converting the drug into tiny particles that penetrate into the most remote areas of the respiratory tract. Nebulizer therapy provides effective treatment of bronchitis of any etiology and severity.
As you can see, the choice of inhalers is almost as wide as the range of drugs for inhalation treatment of bronchitis. The main thing is to start therapy on time, without waiting for complications. And leave bronchitis behind.

Bronchitis is usually called an inflammatory disease, a pathological process that is located in the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. The patient usually experiences general painful symptoms, such as weakness, fever, lethargy, drowsiness, as well as respiratory symptoms themselves: cough with sputum, congestion and discomfort in the upper respiratory tract, pain in the throat.
Nowadays there are many ways to treat respiratory diseases. A popular method is nebulizer inhalation for bronchitis. A nebulizer is a special inhalation device that introduces medicinal solutions and prepared drugs into the patient’s upper respiratory tract in the form of tiny droplet particles, which are quickly distributed throughout the respiratory tract and have a therapeutic effect on its inflamed and swollen mucous membrane.
Why is it better to use a nebulizer?
The nebulizer has a whole host of positive aspects, which is why it is increasingly preferred by doctors and patients.
The most compelling arguments in favor of a nebulizer are the following:
- The development of side effects from a particular drug is less common, due to the fact that the drugs do not enter the patient’s blood, but act locally on the affected area in the mucous membrane of the respiratory tree.
- The drugs begin to act very quickly, which is facilitated by the exceptionally small size of the dispersed particles that make up the medicinal solution and penetrate the patient’s respiratory tract.
- Due to the increased speed and effectiveness of the drug due to the size of the dispersed particles, the total amount of drug required for the treatment to be effective becomes smaller.
- The device is suitable for use not only in adults, but also in children, since its use does not require the patient to learn how to properly inhale and exhale medication, as is the case with inhalers.
- The inhalation procedure using a nebulizer can be carried out at home; you can breathe through it even at night while sleeping.
- The device is safe and easy to use, the treatment is pleasant.
- Inhalation with a nebulizer does not have an adverse emotional effect on the patient: during such inhalation, the patient can even sleep while inhaling the medicine.
What should you consider when using nebulizer inhalations?
There are several rules that must be taken into account in order for the therapeutic effect of nebulizer inhalation to be maximum, and for the treatment itself to proceed quickly and safely. The most important points are the following:
- You cannot dilute the medicinal solution in a nebulizer with plain water, as this may lead to bronchospasm in the patient: the muscles of the respiratory apparatus will contract, and the patient will suffocate. To dilute the drugs, a sterile saline solution is used.
- You cannot select medications and their doses yourself. It is better to further discuss treatment with your doctor.
- It is better not to use oily fatty solutions for inhalation, as they have a detrimental effect on the bronchial mucosa and the treatment of bronchitis in general.
- Do not mix different solutions for one inhalation. If the patient is prescribed to inhale the respiratory tract with several medications, then it is better to treat each drug separately with an interval of at least 15 minutes.
- To carry out inhalation, it is necessary that at least one and a half hours pass after the patient has eaten.
- The rate of air exit from the device during inhalation should be about 6-8 liters per minute. Usually this parameter is set on the device in advance, however, it is important to control it.
- If antibiotic solutions or hormonal drugs are administered to a patient by inhalation using a nebulizer, then after the procedure the patient should be allowed to rinse his mouth with clean water.
What inhalations to do for bronchitis
In case of bronchitis, you can use a number of drugs, the main properties of which are anti-inflammatory, decongestant and soothing, thinning and phlegm-removing effects.
Typically, inhalation solutions for nebulizers are sold in pharmacies in ready-made form. Patients are often prescribed treatment with the following drugs:
- Lazolvan. The drug acts as an expectorant: it thins mucus and facilitates and accelerates the removal of the latter from the patient’s respiratory tract.
- Ambrobene. It also has a phlegm thinning effect. The advantage of the drug is that antibiotics, if necessary, are absorbed better during its use and act quite effectively.
- Inhalations with mineral waters “Narzan” and “Borjomi”. Such inhalations help to reduce inflammation in the mucous membrane of the respiratory apparatus, soothe it and relieve swelling and pain in the throat.
- Chlorophyllipt. The drug contains eucalyptus components, which gives an antiseptic effect and also helps reduce the symptoms of inflammation in the respiratory tract.
- Fluimucil. The drug has an antimicrobial effect and also thins sputum.
- Pulmicort. Anti-inflammatory drug of local action of hormonal nature.
- Berodual. The drug helps to dilate the bronchi and facilitate the passage of air flow through the respiratory tract, which is sometimes significantly narrowed by inflammation.
Note
Under no circumstances should you prescribe nebulizer inhalations to yourself. Consultation with your attending physician is necessary. There are drugs, such as herbal remedies with suspended particles, the nebulized use of which is strictly contraindicated in a patient with bronchitis, even if the drug itself has anti-inflammatory or analgesic effects. In addition, the doctor will be able to recommend the correct medicinal solutions and doses of drugs for both adults and children. A competent assessment of the therapeutic effect is also important. Sometimes you can do without antibacterial agents, but if antibiotics are still necessary, only a specialist can prescribe drugs from this group correctly.
Video: Nebulizer - inhalation in a modern way!
Using a nebulizer is very convenient for inhalation. I add Prospan drops to treat cough. My therapist prescribed them for me for bronchitis. Just breathe in the steam for a few minutes and what relief comes. The cough softens and sputum comes out. I really like it, I recover much faster.
The doctor prescribed me inhalations with Prospan drops. I first went to the clinic for procedures, and then bought a nebulizer for home. I really like the effect, it just saves me from bronchitis.

Inhalations for bronchitis with a nebulizer for children and adults: how to breathe correctly and recipes
Bronchitis is an inflammatory process of the respiratory system in which the bronchi are involved. This disease is accompanied by a continuous exhausting cough, fever, weakness and poor health. The doctor listens for harsh breathing and wheezing. The acute phase of bronchitis is accompanied by a dry cough, then sputum begins to leave, and relief occurs. Ignoring the problem leads to the development of chronic bronchitis and other serious complications. At the acute stage of uncomplicated bronchitis, as a rule, antibiotics are not prescribed. Unlike diseases of the nasopharynx, in which it is possible to apply therapeutic agents directly to the damaged surface, local treatment of bronchitis is possible only with the help of special devices. A nebulizer for bronchitis is just such a device that converts medications into aerosols and delivers them to the lower respiratory tract.
Is it possible to use a nebulizer for bronchitis?
Nebulizer therapy is not effective for all manifestations of colds or infectious diseases. For example, for a runny nose or sore throat, sprays, gargles, and nasal drops are more effective. The use of a nebulizer is the delivery of therapeutic agents in the form of aerosols deep into the respiratory tract. So is it possible to use a nebulizer for bronchitis? Inhalations for bronchitis with a nebulizer have been carried out in world practice for more than 100 years and their effectiveness has been recognized in medical circles. A nebulizer is a compressor type of inhaler. The steam in it arises not from temperature, but from fine particles produced using rarefied pressure.
Indications
When using a nebulizer, you should understand that it is not the nebulizer itself that treats, but the drugs poured into it. The list of medications delivered to the “destination” in this way is not so large, so not all respiratory diseases are indications for nebulizer inhalation. The device is used for false croup (stenosis of the larynx) to reduce edema and increase the throat lumen with inhaled steroids, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary tuberculosis using antibiotics and thinning drugs. It is also effective for obstructive bronchitis and exacerbation of bronchial asthma. In this case, steroids are used to suppress the inflammatory process and bronchodilators to relieve spasm. The use of a nebelizer for the treatment of chronic bronchitis is also relevant, because... minimizes the harmful effects of drugs during long-term therapy.
Preparation
A nebulizer inhaler for bronchitis is an indispensable thing for treatment at home. This method is much more effective than conventional means of treating the disease, because With the help of the device, the drug is sprayed into the smallest particles, due to which they reach the most remote areas of the respiratory system. Very convenient in treating children and bedridden patients. Preparing it for use includes the following steps:
- wash hands thoroughly before assembly;
- the device is assembled according to the instructions, batteries are inserted (connected to the mains);
- water is poured in and the tightness is checked;
- the solution for inhalation is heated in a water bath to room temperature;
- when prescribing several medicinal solutions, the following sequence must be observed: first, fill in a bronchodilator, then a sputum thinner, an anti-inflammatory drug or an antibiotic. Pauses between inhalations should be a quarter of an hour;
- the required dose is poured into the nebulizer container and brought to the mark with an injection solution or saline solution;
- the procedure is not carried out immediately after physical activity and food, but after 1.5 hours.

Technique for inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis
How to breathe correctly with a nebulizer during bronchitis? The inhalation technique is as follows:
- the procedure is carried out in a sitting position if possible;
- the air is slowly drawn in and exhaled through a special mouthpiece;
- Having inhaled, the breath is held for a few seconds, then a slow exhalation is made;
- the duration of the procedure is minutes (determined by the doctor);
- after inhalation of a hormonal drug, rinse your mouth with warm water;
- talk less and do not immediately go outside.
Recipes for a nebulizer for bronchitis
How to refill a nebulizer for bronchitis? For inhalation using a nebulizer, various ready-made dosage forms are used. Based on the nature of the cough, the doctor prescribes:
- bronchodilators to dilate the bronchi (Berodual, Berotek, Salbutamol, Atrovent);
- anti-inflammatory (malavit, tonsilgon N, herbal remedies rotokan, eucalyptus, propolis);
- antibacterial and antimicrobial (gentomycin, furatsilin, fluimucil, chlorophyllipt);
- for thinning and expectoration of sputum (ACC, fluimucil, lazolvan, ambrobene, sinupret, mucoltin);
- antitussives (lidocaine, tussamag);
- vasoconstrictors (naphthyzin, adrenaline).
Antibiotics for nebulizer for bronchitis
For inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis, antibacterial drugs: fluimucil antibiotic, dioxidin, gentamicin, tobramycin.
Fluimucil - consists of two components - the broad-spectrum antibiotic thiamphenicol and the mucolytic acetylcysteine, which dilutes sputum and pus and promotes the rapid penetration of the antibiotic into the lung tissue. The inhalation dose for adults is 250 mg, for children – 125 mg. The frequency of administration is 1-2 times a day. The course of treatment is no more than 10 days.
Dioxidin is a synthetic antibacterial bactericidal drug with broad pharmacological action. There are 1% and 0.5% solutions of the drug. For a nebulizer, 1% dioxidin is diluted with saline in a ratio of 1:4, and 0.5% - 1:2. Two treatments per day are recommended.
Gentamicin - suppresses gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, use a 0.1% solution of the drug.
Tombracin - destroys bacteria, effective against various infections of the respiratory system. When inhaled, the drug remains in the respiratory tract. For children over 6 years of age and adults, 300 mg 2 times a day is recommended, but at least 12 hours between treatments, for 28 days. The ampoule is opened and placed in the nebulizer; you need to breathe until the liquid runs out.
Nebulizer solutions for bronchitis
In addition to antibiotics, we will consider other nebulizer solutions for bronchitis. The safest treatment for bronchitis for both adults and children is inhalation with saline solution for a nebulizer. Often, due to hypersensitivity to various components of pharmacological drugs, people cannot use certain medications. Saline solution is a salt dissolved in water (1% solution), has an antiseptic, softening effect, and promotes the removal of sputum. In addition, it is used as a base in the preparation of many recipes. Some of them are described below.
Inhalations for bronchitis with Berodual and saline nebulizer
Berodual is a bronchodilator used to treat chronic obstructive bronchitis and bronchial asthma. The dose is selected individually, depending on the condition and severity of bronchospasm attacks. As a rule, inhalations begin with the lowest recommended dose. For children under 6 years old - 2 drops per kilogram of body weight, at the age of 6-12 years - 10 drops, after 12 - 20 drops. Doses may vary, but not exceed 10, 40, 80 drops, respectively. The drug is brought to a volume of 3-4 ml using saline and inserted into the nebulizer. For a new inhalation, it is necessary to make the solution again, and pour out the remaining one from the previous one. As a result of clinical studies, during inhalation with Berodual and saline, negative reactions were noted in the form of nausea, dry mouth, headache, tachycardia, and increased blood pressure.
Inhalations for bronchitis with lazolvan, berodual and saline nebulizer
Inhalations with a nebulizer for bronchitis with lasolvan, berodual and saline have an even more pronounced therapeutic effect, because Lazolvan increases the secretion and removal of mucus from the bronchi. It is well tolerated by patients, the dose used varies depending on age and is: up to 2 years - 7.5 mg, 2-5 years - 15 mg, children over 5 - 15-22.5 mg. If possible, it is best to carry out 2 inhalations per day. For bronchitis, you can do inhalations with a nebulizer only with lazolvan and saline solution.
Miramistin for nebulizer for bronchitis
Miramistin for nebulizer for bronchitis is not effective, because. selective against microorganisms. It is more used for inhalation in otolaryngology: for tonsillitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis.
Mineral water inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis
For bronchitis, inhalation of mineral water with a nebulizer is allowed, but with a number of restrictions. Mineral water should be still and slightly alkaline, which includes Borjomi, known for its medicinal qualities. Originally from Georgia, it has a complex chemical composition that has a beneficial effect on many human life systems, including reducing catarrhal symptoms. Inhalation of Borjomi in a nebulizer for bronchitis will moisten the airways, make the secretion of mucus more liquid, facilitating their elimination. The important significance of this procedure is that it does not cause allergies, and therefore is suitable for children of any age and pregnant women. Skeptics of such treatment warn against using unsterilized solutions to avoid the development of pneumonia, which is what mineral water is.
Inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis in pregnant women
Inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis in pregnant women is an effective way to speed up recovery without resorting to medications that pose a threat to the fetus. There are conditions when the risk from the use of medications is lower than the danger to life from the disease, so it is necessary to use such treatment. If it is possible to avoid the negative effects of chemical components, it is better to do without them. From the proposed recipes, it is obvious that the safest are inhalations using saline solution and mineral water. The same nebulizer inhalations for bronchitis are recommended for children. In addition, it is advisable to use this inhalation method for children no earlier than after a year of life, because the child is unable to cough up intense sputum. When using medications, you must carefully study the instructions. Thus, lazolvan can be used by children and women after the 28th week of pregnancy, berodual - after the first trimester of pregnancy, etc.
Contraindications for carrying out
There are contraindications to inhalation with a nebulizer. Firstly, you cannot do the procedure if you are intolerant to the medication used. Also, diseases such as severe pulmonary and heart failure, stroke and heart attack suffered less than six months, pulmonary hemorrhage, tuberculosis, bullous emphysema, body temperature above 37.5 0 are an obstacle to the procedure. In case of obstructive bronchitis, inhalations with medicinal herbs and essential oils should not be performed, so as not to aggravate the condition of the bronchi by excessive allergization.
Consequences after the procedure
The consequences after inhalation with a nebulizer are favorable, provided that all rules for using the device are followed and treatment is prescribed by a specialist. Only a doctor can determine the remedy needed to eliminate the symptoms of bronchitis. Do not forget that a nebulizer is a “vehicle” for delivering medicine to areas of inflammation, the correct choice of which determines the consequences.
Complications after the procedure
There are known cases of complications after the procedure. We are talking about the use of non-sterile solutions (mineral water, herbal decoctions) for inhalation with a nebulizer. Bacteria, entering deep into the respiratory tract, can cause pneumonia and other infectious diseases. The use of oily solutions can also be harmful to health, because... fats settle on the walls of the bronchi and alveoli and can lead to disruption of gas exchange and the development of fatty pulmonitis.
Post-procedure care
After inhalation with a nebulizer, you need to exercise some caution. Care after the procedure includes excluding active activities for a while; it is best to lie down, you can just sit quietly. You should also not immediately go outside or ventilate the room.

Nebulizer is an effective treatment tool
The usefulness and rapid effectiveness of inhalation in the complex treatment of diseases of the respiratory system has been known for a long time. Echoes of this primitive knowledge can still be found in everyday self-medication recipes. For example, many people still breathe steam over a pan of boiled potatoes when they cough. Meanwhile, special devices for inhalation were familiar to doctors and were widely used since the mid-19th century.
Ease of use and ergonomic design make the device an affordable and effective tool that can be used not only in a medical institution, but also independently, at home.
The first drug nebulizers, in terms of their complexity and efficiency, were, of course, incomparable with a modern nebulizer, which already uses advanced scientific and technological solutions.
Benefits of a nebulizer
Doing inhalations is not only desirable, but even necessary if you want to achieve a quick and lasting therapeutic result. And with the help of a nebulizer, this procedure will not only be convenient, but also most effective. It is especially important to have this device at home for people suffering from bronchial asthma or chronic bronchitis, because they need regular treatment.
Even a portable, home nebulizer in combination with, for example, Lazolvan or Berodual can significantly alleviate the symptoms of the disease and effectively combat the main “inconvenience” of bronchitis - dry and wet cough.
As a result, the use of a nebulizer for cough, bronchial asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis and other respiratory diseases significantly alleviates the patient’s condition, relieves symptoms and speeds up recovery.
The supply of ultra-small particles of the drug to the patient is carried out using a special mask or through a mouthpiece, and the latter option for administering the drug is more effective, as it allows the drug to be delivered to its destination without large losses in the nasopharynx.
Among other advantages of inhalation with a nebulizer are the following:
- since the administered drug enters directly into the bronchial tissue, a minimal amount of the drug enters the bloodstream, and this minimizes the likelihood of side effects;
- The nebulizer allows you to use a wide range of medications depending on the specific diagnosis: expectorants, antibacterials, bronchodilators, hormones, antiseptics;
- unlike many other medical procedures, the nebulizer can be used even when the patient’s body temperature is high;
- has no age restrictions (can be used by both adults and very young patients);
- The device is extremely easy to use and safe.
Nebulizers: which one to choose?
Inhalers according to their “dimensions” and technology for forming dispersed substances are divided into:
- stationary (used in medical institutions or outpatient clinics);
- portable (small size, for use at home).
The first type of inhaler uses a compressor to supply air flow, which makes the device bulky and inconvenient for home use. More compact are devices whose operating principle is based on spraying a polydisperse medicinal liquid mixed with saline using ultrasound.
Since in this case there is no need to compress the air, there is therefore no need for an electric compressor, and atomization occurs in the process of ultrasonic vibration of the membrane. An ultrasonic nebulizer effectively copes with the task of transporting medicine to the trachea, nasopharynx and bronchi.
Despite all the convenience and wide capabilities of an ultrasonic nebulizer, its weak side is one drawback: such an inhaler cannot nebulize certain medicinal substances, in particular those containing oil components. It is better to consult your doctor before using it and find out whether he has prescribed medications that will be ineffective with this type of nebulizer.
You can also select a compression and electronic mesh nebulizer. The first is used when it is necessary to direct the drug to the alveoli and bronchi. As for the second, thanks to inhalation it can be used to reach the lowest parts of the lungs. An electronic mesh type nebulizer is well suited for children with bronchitis.
Indications and possible prohibitions for using a nebulizer
The list of diseases for which it is advisable to introduce nebulizer inhalation into complex treatment is very wide:
- ARVI;
- bronchial asthma;
- acute and chronic forms of bronchitis;
- pneumonia;
- obstructive pulmonary pathologies;
- pulmonary tuberculosis;
- the period of postoperative rehabilitation - to prevent pneumonia.
Like any strong, effective remedy, inhalation has a number of contraindications. Conditions in which inhalation should be strictly avoided or carried out only in a hospital, under the supervision of the attending physician:
- allergic reaction to prescribed medications;
- pneumothorax;
- pulmonary hemorrhage;
- heart rhythm disturbances;
- heart failure.
Solutions for nebulizers
Depending on the type of disease and the form of its course, the doctor selects the optimal medicine to be used for therapy. It can be:
- Fenoterol. Used for emergency relief of an attack of bronchial asthma, treatment of chronic lung pathology;
- Atrovent. Effective for obstructive pulmonary diseases, bronchial asthma, and relief of asthma attacks. The drug is safe to use.
Mucus thinners, expectorants and antitussives:
- Fluimucil. Facilitates the removal of mucus from the respiratory tract. The active ingredient is acetylcysteine, therefore it is not recommended to use it simultaneously with antibiotics;
- Lazolvan. Prescribed for acute and chronic forms of bronchitis, when the sputum has a viscous consistency. Since the medicine contains ambroxol, treatment with Lazolvan is undesirable in combination with antitussives;
- Sinupret. Herbal preparation. Helps with swelling of the respiratory mucosa;
- Gedelix. Effective for bronchitis at the initial stage, when there are difficulties with sputum separation;
- Mukaltin. Used for diseases of the bronchi and lungs;
- Lidocaine. A drug with a local anesthetic effect. Used for dry, painful cough for symptomatic treatment. It should not be used without prior consultation with a doctor, since Lidocaine has a large number of contraindications.
Anti-inflammatory (including hormonal), antiallergic (antihistamine) drugs:
- Rotokan. Alcohol-containing extract of yarrow, chamomile and calendula. Inhaled for diseases of the middle and upper respiratory tract;
- Propolis. To relieve painful symptoms of the respiratory tract, the drug is mixed with saline solution (1 ml of propolis per 20 ml of saline solution). Contraindications - individual intolerance to bee products;
- Eucalyptus. An alcohol tincture is effective in relieving cough, but the use of eucalyptus is contraindicated in patients suffering from asthma;
- Dexamethasone, Pulmicort. Hormonal drugs with a pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic effect. Prescribed when treatment with other drugs has shown low effectiveness.
- Dioxidine, Nitrofural. The drugs are indicated for the treatment of acute respiratory viral diseases, preventing infections from entering the lower sections of the bronchi;
- Chlorophyllipt. A herbal medicine that has proven itself in diseases caused by staphylococci. Caution is required when using the medicine, since it has a strong coloring effect and is very difficult to wash off;
- Miramistin. Used in a nebulizer for the treatment of bronchial diseases accompanied by pus discharge.
Immunomodulatory drugs:
- Derinat, Interferon. Good means for the prevention and treatment of influenza, ARVI. Helps strengthen the body's natural defenses.
- Naphthyzin. Vasoconstrictor used for inhalation for croup, laryngeal edema, laryngotracheitis.
Several basic rules for inhalation
Despite the fact that all devices are provided with instructions for their safe and effective use, the information in them is not always complete and detailed. The list of basic rules for performing inhalation using the device is as follows:
- The interval between the last meal and the procedure should be at least 1.5 hours. After the procedure, take the same break before eating;
- Do not talk during inhalation;
- if a disease of the upper respiratory tract is diagnosed, the medicine is inhaled through the nose; in case of inflammatory processes in the middle tract, you need to breathe through the mouth. Breathing should be smooth and easy. A mask is used;
- for bronchitis, diseases of the lungs and trachea, the aerosol is inhaled through the mouth using a mouthpiece;
- when using several drugs simultaneously, bronchodilators are first inhaled, followed by a 15-minute pause, after which agents to remove sputum are inhaled, and only after that - antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs;
- Oily products are not used for inhalation with a nebulizer. The device produces a fine substance, and oil particles will penetrate into the lungs, increasing the risk of allergic reactions and pneumonia;
- Most models are not designed for the use of homemade herbal decoctions and infusions. The device cannot miss their larger suspension, which will lead to failure of the device;
- The nebulizer is not suitable for using (with rare exceptions) suspensions and syrups;
- Eufillin, Diphenhydramine, Papaverine and other drugs from this series are not used;
- preparations for inhalation are prepared with saline solution of 0.9% sodium chloride. The formula for diluting a medicinal substance in solution is individual for each product;
- The shelf life of the prepared solution for the nebulizer is no more than a day. The medicine is stored in the refrigerator. Before use, you need to bring it to room temperature.
Despite the simplicity of the procedure using a nebulizer, it is important to remember that the correct regimen for using medications, as well as their combination with saline solution, can only be prescribed by a doctor. Under no circumstances should you self-medicate - this can cause serious harm to your health.

Good health to everyone! I often suffer from bronchitis, a very nasty disease,
although there is nothing good in any disease. Bronchitis exhausts me with a dry cough and until sputum starts to come out, I really feel very bad.
I decided to buy an inhaler! I bought it, but I have no idea how to use it and what to put in it! I surfed the Internet and found this article.
Now I am fully prepared to face this dirty trick called bronchitis.
The article fully covers the topic of how to use the inhaler and what medications to use. And the entire site is filled with very accessible and useful information. A real home health consultant!
We have been treating coughs with a nebulizer for several years now. Previously, I just filled it with mineral water, but now we also drink a monastery collection of 16 herbs, it works more effectively. My daughter loves it and I like to drink it at night. And the main thing is that the cough goes away quickly.
All information provided on this site is for reference only. Do not self-medicate. At the first sign of disease, consult a doctor. An active link is required when quoting.

Inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis
Bronchitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the bronchial tree. It is the most common respiratory tract disease. The treatment of bronchitis is, of course, carried out by a doctor who will prescribe pathogenetic and symptomatic therapy. Nebulizer therapy plays a leading role in modern medicine.
Benefits of using inhalers to treat cough
Nebulizers have become simply indispensable in the treatment of any type of bronchitis. They are especially relevant in chronic processes (COPD, bronchial asthma), when treatment is carried out for more than one year, and often for life. During long-term therapy, it is especially important that side effects from the therapy are kept to a minimum. The use of a nebulizer allows you to successfully deliver the desired medicine to the desired organ, i.e., to the inflamed bronchi. With this method of administration, the medicine does not enter the bloodstream and does not cause its unwanted side effects. A wide range of medications can be used: bronchodilators; agents affecting sputum rheology; antibiotics; hormonal medications; antiseptics, etc. They are simple and convenient to use, and most importantly, absolutely safe. They are used in all age groups - from newborns to the elderly without any harm to health. Unlike many other procedures, they can be used at elevated body temperatures. Not a single asthmatic or COPD patient can do without a nebulizer, since its use makes their life much easier.
Indications and contraindications for the use of nebulizer therapy
Nebulizer therapy is used for the following conditions:
The following conditions are contraindications to the use of a nebulizer:
- Spontaneous pneumothorax;
- pulmonary hemorrhage;
- heart failure in the stage of decompensation;
- severe heart rhythm disturbances;
- allergy to drugs used for inhalation treatment.
Drugs that are used for inhalation for bronchitis through a nebulizer
- Berotek. Used to treat bronchial asthma and COPD. 1–2 ml of the drug is used for inhalation, the effect lasts for 3 hours. It is used symptomatically depending on the severity of bronchospasm. During an exacerbation, the patient inhales on average up to 4 times a day. Inhalation of Berotek through a nebulizer has significant advantages over a metered aerosol can: the drug exerts its effect directly in the smallest bronchioles, and does not settle in the oropharynx; is not absorbed into the blood and does not cause a lot of side effects (increased blood pressure, arrhythmias, tremor). When using a spray can, you must not breathe for 10 seconds after administering the drug, which is not always possible during a severe attack, or in children. This is not necessary when using an inhaler.
- Salbutamol. Available in special nebulas of 2.5 ml. One ampoule is used for inhalation; the therapeutic effect lasts for 4–6 hours. The number of inhalations depends on the severity of the underlying disease.
- Combined drugs - Berodual. 2-4 ml of solution are inhaled, the number of procedures depends on the patient’s condition. Combination drugs have a greater effect than single drugs.
- Atrovent. Inhale 2–4 ml, the effect lasts for 5–6 hours. The bronchodilating properties of the drug are somewhat weaker than those of Berotek, but it is practically free of disadvantages and is more often prescribed to patients with cardiovascular diseases.
2. Agents affecting sputum rheology:
- Lazolvan. The solution intended for inhalation is available in 100 ml bottles. Effectively dilutes viscous, difficult to separate sputum, as a result of which it becomes liquid and the patient can easily cough it up. Inhale 3 ml of the drug 4 times a day not only for COPD and bronchial asthma, but also for any ARVI.
- Fluimucil. It is used for severe broncho-obstructive syndrome, as well as purulent sputum in a dose of 3 ml several times a day.
- Slightly alkaline mineral waters Borjomi, Narzan, physiological solution in a dose of 3 ml 4 times a day.
3. Antibacterial and antiseptic agents:
- Fluimucil antibiotic. A two-component drug containing the antibiotic thiamphenicol and acetylcysteine, which effectively thins sputum. Prescribed for purulent bronchitis. The dry powder is dissolved in 5 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride and divided by 2 times.
- Dioxidine. A broad-spectrum antiseptic, used mainly for purulent processes in a dose of 4 ml 2 times a day.
- Furacillin. Antiseptic. Use a ready-made 0.02% solution, 4 ml 2 times a day.
- Budesonide, Pulmicort. Nebulas 2 ml in various dosages. Used to treat bronchial asthma. The dose and frequency depend on the severity of asthma and are selected by the doctor.
- Rotokan. A solution with antiseptic properties based on herbs (chamomile, yarrow, calendula). Recommended for ARVI. Dilute 1/2 teaspoon per 100 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. Inhale 4 ml several times a day.
The following drugs should not be inhaled:
- Any solutions that contain oils, including essential oils;
- informal decoctions and infusions of herbs containing suspended particles;
- aminophylline, papaverine, platyphylline, diphenhydramine, since they do not exert their effect in the bronchi.
I would like to note that all the listed drugs are indicated as informational information, which is not a reason for self-medication. Treatment should always be prescribed by a doctor! However, if you have been prescribed several inhalations, you must strictly follow the following algorithm: first, a bronchodilator is inhaled, after 10–15 minutes an cough suppressant. After the patient has coughed, inhalation with an antiseptic can be performed.

Preparations for inhalation for bronchitis and rules for inhalation
Inhalations for bronchitis are a very effective way to get rid of breathing problems. An infection that has penetrated into the bronchi is manifested by inflammation of the mucous membrane, a decrease in the bronchial lumen, and abundant accumulation of sputum. Inhalations for obstructive bronchitis have a positive effect on the speed of recovery, facilitate breathing, diluting mucus and removing it from the bronchial space. It is not possible to manage with inhalations alone; therapy must be comprehensive. What inhalations can be done at home to treat bronchitis?
The essence of the procedure and its advantages
Inhalations for bronchitis in children and adults are often carried out in a hospital. The patient inhales the inhalation solution through a special device.
You can also conduct sessions at home yourself using essential oils, plant components, and medications. How to do this correctly will be discussed below.
So, procedures can be of two types:
- inhalation for bronchitis with a nebulizer - a special device that is used to inhale various solutions administered by aerosol;
- steam inhalations for bronchitis - do not require any special equipment, you only need a hot liquid to breathe the steam released over it; the effect is enhanced by herbal decoctions, extracts, essential oils and other herbal remedies.
Any type of procedure has the following goals:
- moisturizing the mucous membrane;
- dilution and removal of mucus from the nose, pharynx and larynx;
- expansion of the bronchi and bronchial lumen, stimulation of expectoration, elimination of edema, fight against inflammation, neutralization of pathogens;
- intensive tissue restoration by stimulating blood supply and microcirculation of the mucosa.
Inhalations for chronic bronchitis and its acute form relieve inflammation, remove mucus, and stop annoying coughing attacks.
Compared to other therapeutic methods, inhalations have clear and significant advantages:
- the procedure is absolutely safe, with the exception of possible allergic reactions in the patient;
- the duration of exposure of the drug to the affected area increases significantly;
- the drug introduced into the body by inhalation is concentrated to the maximum extent;
- the mucous membrane absorbs the vaporous substance many times faster;
- the total active surface of the drug increases.
Inhalations using a nebulizer
The device for inhalation is called a nebulizer. This device sprays the active substance so that its microscopic particles pass to each respiratory organ and the path leading to them, and as a result, the absorption of the drug by the mucous membrane occurs quickly and completely.
This compressor or ultrasonic inhaler has an undeniable advantage: it is suitable for the treatment of bronchitis in adults, children and even infants. It is designed in such a way that a powerful directed air flow or ultrasound breaks down medications passing through the nebulizer into an aerosol.
Compared to steam inhalations, this method is certainly more effective, but only pharmaceutical medications are suitable for the device. Essential oils, decoctions of medicinal plants, infusions and other alternative medicines are prohibited from being poured into them.
Inhalation with a nebulizer for bronchitis is easy to carry out. A special solution is placed in a glass, to which a tube is connected, and at its end there is either a mouthpiece or a respiratory mask. The first version of the tip is more suitable for adults, and the second - for small children, it is much more convenient.
It is impossible to burn yourself with any inhalation medicine for bronchitis, since the mucous membranes are not exposed to hot air, the spraying process is carried out by the device itself, so no boiling water is required.
Preparations for inhalation with a nebulizer
Liquid medications are added to the nebulizer for bronchitis and administered into the body. They are purchased at the pharmacy, unlike herbs, extracts and oils. They are not suitable for inhalation using a nebulizer, since there is a high risk that the device will become clogged with particles of plant material.
For chronic, acute and obstructive bronchitis, inhalations are prescribed using the following medications:
- Bronchodilators are medications that dilate the bronchi. The principle of their action prevents spasms. Such drugs are included in therapy if there is an asthmatic cough or chronic obstruction in the lungs. Inhalations with Berodual, Ventolin, Berotek can expel mucus accumulated on the walls of the respiratory tract. Moreover, they can be used either independently or in combination with other substances. Berotek is used to relieve the symptoms of acute bronchitis; it is sold in the form of a solution. 1–2 ml of the product is immersed in the inhaler; after the procedure, the therapeutic effect lasts from two to four hours. The more severe the patient’s condition, the more often inhalations will have to be done. Inhalations with Berodual should be done before using expectorants, 10–15 minutes before.
- Antiseptics – neutralize viruses that cause respiratory infections. Inhalation administration most effectively distributes a liquid drug, which begins its work directly in the area where the infectious agent is concentrated. These include Furacilin, Chlorhexidine, Dioxidin and Miramistin. The latter remedy is absolutely harmless, in other words, it can be used by both children and pregnant women, as well as during lactation. No solvents or additives are needed. Breathe Miramistin through the nebulizer for 15 minutes.
- Antibiotics – cope with purulent bronchitis. This group includes Tobramycin, Gentamicin, Fluimucil. The latter dilutes highly viscous sputum, gradually removing it from the bronchial cavity. If you have a dry cough, you should not use it. The dose for an automatic inhaler is about 4 ml, three times a day is enough. The drug Fluimucil contains two active components: the antibiotic Thiamphenicol itself and the sputum thinner Acetylcysteine.
- Anti-inflammatory - eliminate inflammation, which has become a trigger for the development of bronchitis. Basically, plant-based preparations are used for these purposes, in particular Rotokan.
- Expectorants and mucolytics - thin out thick mucus, force the bronchi to contract better to remove accumulated mucus. Ambroxol is most often used for this purpose; there is a special form specifically for nebulizers. Continuous treatment for a month will clear the bronchi completely.
- Vasoconstrictors - relieve swelling of the mucous membrane, restore blood flow in the bronchi. Naphthyzine, Oxymetazoline, Xylometazoline are often used.
- Hormonal drugs - glucocorticosteroids neutralize allergic reactions and effectively relieve inflammation. Dexamethasone is a very powerful medicine from this group, however, it has a number of side effects, so it is prescribed to children with extreme caution. They do not treat it for a long time; on average, one week is enough.
- Immunomodulators - stimulate local defenses of the body, prescribed specifically by a doctor. These include Derinat, Interferon. They are pre-dissolved in water not hotter than 37 o C.
Mineral water, such as Narzan and Borjomi, is perfect for the same purposes. Salts are excellent dissolvers for other medications.
Contraindications and recommendations for inhalation with a nebulizer
Is it possible to do inhalations for bronchitis? Naturally, this procedure is very useful for both children and adults.
Warm steam and medications sprayed in aerosol form better penetrate the mucous membranes of the respiratory organs and tracts.
They help with acute bronchitis in adults and are well suited for children, even the smallest.
When carrying out any inhalations for bronchitis, you must follow the basic rules:
- All medications should be selected under the guidance of an experienced specialist. Even the most effective drug for bronchitis can be useless or harmful if it is dosed incorrectly or if other principles of treatment are violated.
- Inhalations can be done only half an hour after physical activity. Breathing must be restored, the body also needs to calm down.
- There should be a gap of 1–2 hours between the procedure and the last meal. All the body's forces will be focused on digesting food, and not on treating bronchitis.
- Inhalations for bronchitis at home should be carried out in complete calm, a comfortable position, in silence or with calm, low music, completely relaxed. Breathing should be even and measured, as usual.
- After the procedure, you can rest quietly for the next 10–20 minutes, refrain from talking and keep your mouth closed; it is also advisable not to go outside. The medications should disperse and take effect.
- 5–10 minutes are enough for inhalation. Procedures that are too short are ineffective, and inhaling products for a long time can be harmful.
- The session is not carried out in hot or cold weather. The room should have an optimal comfortable temperature; drafts should not be allowed.
There are some contraindications for inhalation for bronchitis with a nebulizer:
- it is impossible to treat purulent inflammation and sputum in this way, since high temperatures will only increase the proliferation of bacteria;
- regular nosebleeds;
- breathing disorders, stroke, arrhythmia, problems with the heart and blood vessels, brain diseases;
- the temperature for inhalation should not be higher than 37–38 o C;
- allergies to herbs, essential oils, inhalation drugs.
Steam inhalations
Then the only option left is steam inhalation at home. Simply cover your head with a towel while standing over a pan of hot liquid to which various herbs, essential oils and aromatherapy agents have been added.
Here are some effective home remedies:
- Eucalyptus, Kalanchoe, elderberry and agave - 20 g of dried eucalyptus leaves are combined with 20 g of elderberry flowers and 5 ml of aloe or Kalanchoe juice. After pouring this mixture with two glasses of boiling water and letting it sit for 10 minutes, breathe in steam under a towel for about 10 minutes. This inhalation is carried out three times a day, each time with fresh juice. The cough should be treated until it disappears completely, about a couple of weeks.
- Mint and viburnum - 20 g of bark from a viburnum bush is mixed with 15 g of peppermint and 15 g of yarrow. Infuse the mixture with half a liter of boiling water in a thermos for an hour, and then inhale for 20 minutes three times a day.
- Chamomile with pine buds - take 30 g of both components, immerse them in a thermos, pour 400 ml of boiling water, wait an hour. Sessions last 10 minutes, then can be extended to 15. Symptoms of the disease should completely disappear after a couple of weeks.
- Licorice root - you can call it one of the most effective cough remedies, suitable for inhalation for bronchitis. Boiling water is poured over licorice, calendula, chamomile, sage, string, and eucalyptus. Take 15 g of all plants, 2 cups of water are needed. The infusion should simmer in a thermos for 2 hours. Then you can begin treatment procedures. They are carried out 3 times a day for 10 days in a row, duration – a quarter of an hour.
- Honey - a dessert spoon is mixed with one glass of saline solution. Having heated the resulting liquid well, breathe it in steam for 20 minutes, 15 is enough for children. This should be done 4 times a day.
- Salt – salt inhalations are very useful and effective. Add 3 tablespoons of sea salt to 1 liter of boiling water; after dissolving it, you can add 5 drops of eucalyptus oil. Fifteen-minute inhalations should be done every day 4 times until all manifestations of the disease disappear.
- Soda - eliminates bronchial spasms, expels phlegm. Dissolve the soda in water, cool slightly and begin a 20-minute session. There is no need to breathe too deeply, as this may provoke too much coughing. The course of such treatment is a maximum of 5 days.
- Essential oils of fir and pine - conifers do an excellent job with any cough. For inhalation, 10 drops per 200 ml of hot water is enough.
Various recipes will help add variety to treatment and saturate the body with beneficial properties.
