How to properly rinse a baby's nose

Every young mother should monitor the health of her baby. Babies do not know how to express everything that worries them and causes inconvenience, which is why parents are obliged to monitor their condition and help their children in a timely manner.

Table of contents:

It often happens that a baby gets a stuffy nose and there are many reasons for this phenomenon:

  • Insufficient care of the child, not clearing the nose.
  • Poor air humidification in the children's room.
  • The presence of a viral infection that the baby contracted from relatives.

These processes cause breathing problems, which greatly interferes with the baby: it is uncomfortable for him to suck on his mother’s breast, so he is often capricious. During feeding, the baby tries to breathe through his mouth and swallows excess air, which is why regurgitation occurs. If the nasal discharge is abundant, then it leads to coughing, as it flows down the throat and greatly irritates it. The most effective way to get rid of nasal congestion is considered to be timely rinsing.

How to rinse the nose of newborn babies

In order to defeat snot, it is worth using an integrated approach. Be sure to ventilate the room in which the child is located and moisten him well. This can be done using diapers soaked in water and bowls of water placed on the windowsills. But the ideal option is to buy a universal humidifier.

Clean your baby's nose regularly. You should not directly pick out the dried crust from your nose - it must first be softened so that it falls off on its own, cleaning the nose. For such purposes, you can use ordinary saline solution or buy specialized preparations: various sprays and drops. This could be “Aquamaris”, “Dolphin” or “Solin”, available in every pharmacy.

Quite often, mothers use pears to suck out excess mucus from the baby’s nose. But doctors do not recommend using this option very often, because it greatly dries out the mucous membrane of the nose.

The most important thing is to rinse your nose before bringing your baby to your breast. Even when you are sure that there is no more mucus, play it safe again and clean your nose again. The baby will be very grateful to you, because this is the only way he can eat without discomfort.

If you have washed your nose several times and your child continues to breathe heavily, try using drops that constrict the blood vessels. Here it is worth knowing that such drugs do not cure the problem, but only help get rid of it for a while. They reduce swelling of the mucous membrane, which makes breathing easy and pleasant. Thanks to drops such as “Nasivin” or “Otrivin”, the baby will be able to eat, sleep and frolic with pleasure.

But remember that you can use medications no more than 3 times a day. And if you find purulent discharge in your nose, this indicates that there is a virus there, which will have to be treated with Protargol drops.

How to use saline solution to rinse your nose

This remedy was used by our grandmothers to treat diseases and for personal hygiene purposes. Often they prepared it with their own hands. To do this, you need to arm yourself with half a teaspoon of salt, a pinch of baking soda and a glass of filtered and boiled water. All ingredients are mixed and used as a preparation for washing the nose of infants. If you don’t want to go through the hassle, you can buy saline solution at any pharmacy. Fortunately, it is very cheap.

Often mothers panic and are afraid to wash their baby’s nose. There is no need to do this, because the process is quite simple, the main thing is to have all the necessary items at hand. It is recommended to perform rinsing with confident, clear movements and preferably quickly so that the baby does not have time to scream. The child should be swaddled well in advance, because he can interfere with his mother with his little hands. The saline solution is dripped with a small pipette, which must be used only for these purposes.

Tilt the head of the baby back a little and drop 2 drops of the product into each nostril in turn. When you treat the right nostril, turn your head to the left, when you treat the left nostril, turn your head to the left. It happens that a particle of drops gets into the baby’s mouth, which causes an unpleasant sensation and crying. But you don’t need to pay attention to this while continuing the procedure. Remember that you cannot drip a lot of drops, as they can get into the ear canal and lead to otitis media. Also, don’t try to soften the crust with a pear; a pipette will be enough for a baby.

Before you start rinsing, you need to stock up on small cotton swabs, which will come in handy after the spout is rinsed. There must be at least six of them. It is with these tampons soaked in oil that all excess mucus is removed. This is done by carefully screwing the tampon into the baby’s nose to a depth of about 2 centimeters. The actions should be performed until the nose is completely free of snot.

Aquamaris for newborns

In addition to sea salt, the drug contains many useful microelements, so you can use it even while pregnant.

Always remember that before you start using any medication, you should always consult your doctor and not self-medicate.

How to rinse a baby's nose

The condition and health of the baby always worries his parents. An infant cannot yet say for himself what is bothering him and where it hurts. Therefore, the mother has to constantly closely monitor her baby. Newborn babies often experience runny nose and nasal congestion. The reason for this may be improper child care. Another reason is too dry air in the room where the baby spends most of his time. But most often, a runny nose is caused by colds, which the baby can catch from his mother or other relatives.

A severe runny nose and nasal congestion disrupt the natural breathing process and cause a lot of inconvenience to the baby. It is difficult for him to eat from a bottle and breastfeed, sleep is disturbed and his general well-being worsens. One of the effective methods for treating a runny nose in infants is nasal rinsing.

Is it possible to rinse a baby's nose?

Many mothers, when their child has a runny nose, have a question: is it possible to wash the baby’s nose and how to do it. This procedure is considered acceptable and is indicated as a method of treating runny nose in children. Rinsing the nasal passages will help clean them, make it easier for the child to breathe and improve his well-being. Of course, you need to pay special attention to this procedure. Various means are used to rinse the nose, such as saline solution, Otrivin, Aqualor, Aquamaris and others.

How often should you rinse your baby's nose?

You can carry out the procedure of rinsing the baby’s nose quite often, but no more than three to five times a day. If you do this too often, complications and problems with the mucous membrane of the child’s nasal passages are possible. In this case, special care must be taken, since the baby’s mucous membrane is still very tender and sensitive and can be easily damaged. It is also necessary to monitor the child’s reaction to the procedure.

How to properly rinse a baby's nose?

To properly rinse the nose of an infant, you will need cotton swabs made of sterile material, the length of which is approximately 5 cm and the width is 0.5 cm. Parents also need to prepare a small rubber bulb, a pipette or a syringe without a needle, a rinsing agent, and oil ( peach, vaseline, apricot or any other) and the drug prescribed by the doctor.

Rinsing the baby's nose is carried out as follows:

  1. Using a rubber bulb, mucous secretions accumulated there are removed from the nasal passages.
  2. Place the baby on its side.
  3. Using a small syringe without a needle or a pipette, draw up the pre-selected product in a volume of approximately 5-10 ml and inject half of this volume into the nasal passage, then turn the baby’s head to the other side and inject the remaining product into the second nostril. It is necessary to ensure that the child’s head is turned to one side and slightly tilted forward; it cannot be thrown back. In cases where the baby has choked, he is turned over on his tummy and lightly tapped in the area of the shoulder blades. The solution should be administered slowly, without strong pressure. If the drug is administered quickly, it can enter the Eustachian tube, which can cause the development of otitis media.
  4. A pear is used to remove residual fluid and mucus from the nasal passages.
  5. Then, using cotton wool, the crusts are removed from the nose. To remove them painlessly and easily, you need to moisten the flagellum in oil and carefully insert it into the nostril, about 2 cm. Thus, both nasal passages are cleaned, and a new clean turunda is used for each of them.
  6. When the nose is completely clean, a medicine prescribed by a doctor is instilled into it. Usually this is some kind of vasoconstrictor. For young children, Nazivin 0.01%, Nazol-baby and other drugs are most suitable. You can put drops into your nose no more than twice a day, and the duration of treatment should not exceed three days.

How and what to rinse a baby’s nose with a runny nose

To rinse the baby's nose with a runny nose, ready-made medications from a pharmacy or self-prepared products can be used. However, for carrying out the procedure in young children, it is still recommended to use ready-made special preparations, since they are more adapted to the age of the baby. It is advisable to select such a remedy together with a pediatrician. If it is not possible to use pharmaceutical preparations, then you can prepare a weak salt solution or herbal infusion at home. But it is better not to experiment with iodine solutions and other similar means when treating infants.

How to rinse a baby's nose with saline?

To prepare a saline solution, ordinary salt is dissolved in distilled water. This solution becomes the basis for many drugs used to treat rhinitis: Aqualor, Otrivin, Nosol, Aquamaris, Quix and others. Saline solution is a natural remedy; it helps cleanse the nasal passages, ease breathing, thin and remove mucus.

To rinse your baby’s nose, you can purchase a ready-made saline solution in an ampoule or glass bottle at a pharmacy. You can rinse the nasal passages with this remedy up to 6 times a day. Also, saline solution can be instilled into the baby’s nose before meals, a couple of drops per nostril.

How to rinse a baby's nose with Aquamaris?

Aquamaris is a mixture of purified sea and ordinary water. It is used for inflammatory diseases of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx and mouth. It is released in special bottles. To rinse the nose with aquamaris, you need to insert the tip of the bottle with the drug into the baby’s nasal passage and pour in a little product. Then the accumulated mucus and dried crusts are removed from the baby’s nose. Before carrying out the procedure, you should carefully study the attached instructions.

How to rinse a baby's nose with Aqualor?

Aqualor is available in a special 15 ml can, which is convenient for rinsing the baby’s nose. Indications for the use of this remedy are infectious diseases of the upper respiratory system, influenza, and viral infections. Aqualor baby is intended for the treatment of infants. 2-4 procedures can be performed per day. When rinsing the nose with Aqualor, the baby should lie on its side. The bottle dispenser with the product is placed in the nostril and a small volume of the drug is poured into one nasal passage and then into the other. After this, all discharge from each nostril is carefully removed.

How to rinse a baby's nose with Otrivin?

Otrivin Baby is available in various forms, including a special solution for rinsing the nose. The procedure is carried out up to 3-4 times a day. To remove the mucous contents of the nasal passages, you can also use a special Otrivin aspirator, which will help prevent injury. Rinsing the baby's nose with Otrivin is carried out according to the same scheme as with other drugs.

How and with what to rinse the nose of newborns and infants

In the first year of a baby’s life, mothers face many questions and difficulties, especially if the child is their first. While the baby cannot sit independently, problems with nasal breathing can significantly complicate life both with a physiological runny nose and with a cold or allergy. Let's figure out how to safely and effectively rinse the nose to help a newborn or infant.

Causes of problems

Nasal congestion in babies can be caused by various reasons: colds, allergies, dry indoor air, teething. Whatever the cause, nasal discharge can make your baby's life much more difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to take effective measures to eliminate them. First of all, you need to find the cause. If a runny nose manifests itself as an allergic reaction or as a reaction to dry indoor air (physiological runny nose), then it is enough to moisturize the nasal mucosa, ventilate the room more often and walk with the baby in the fresh air. If a child has a cold and nasal discharge does not allow him to breathe (viral runny nose), then it is necessary to help the child get rid of these unpleasant sensations. The simplest and most effective way to clean a baby's nose is to rinse it with saline solution, a solution of table salt, or a solution based on sea water.

Is it always necessary to clean your nose?

If nasal congestion is caused only by dry indoor air or an allergy to dust, it will be enough to use a humidifier, which is especially important during the heating season. If the air is excessively dry, a child may sniffle and grunt in his sleep, which indicates a dry nasal mucosa. In this regard, mucus is produced, which can be mistaken for a viral runny nose. Also, to moisturize the nasal mucosa, it will be enough to drip saline or another salt-based product into the nose at night.

In addition, the baby experiences profuse nasal discharge when teeth appear. In this case, it is enough to give him one of the remedies that are aimed at facilitating teething.

It is necessary to clean the nose when there is obvious discharge from the nose, as well as when the baby becomes uncomfortable: it is uncomfortable for him to eat, he sniffles or grunts.

Several rules must be followed to alleviate the child’s condition:

  • frequently ventilate the room;
  • Give your child warm boiled water as often as possible;
  • drip any salt-based product into your nose and wipe your nose;
  • In case of excessive nasal discharge, we help the baby get rid of it by sucking out the snot using an aspirator.

We rinse correctly

The term “rinsing” itself is relative to small children, since the correct approach is to simply instill a saline solution into the nose. Instillation helps with dry physiological runny nose to soften the crusts that have formed and moisturize the nasal mucosa. It is enough to carry it out 1-2 times a day as needed. For nasal congestion, saline solution is dripped 3-4 times a day, 1-2 drops (the frequency varies depending on the nasal congestion). The general procedure is as follows:

  • put the child on his back;
  • put 1-2 drops into each nostril;
  • remove excess with a napkin.

To moisten the nasal passages of a newborn, 1-2 drops of saline solution is enough

Purchasing a solution at a pharmacy has the advantage of initial sterility. In the future, the solution can be drawn through a syringe with a needle, which must then be removed, since sterility is lost when the container is opened.

The pharmacy also sells nasal drops and sprays similar to saline solution for children. They are made on the basis of sea water, are quite effective, but are expensive.

How to prepare saline solution at home

To prepare your own saline solution, just mix a teaspoon of table salt and a liter of chilled boiled water. For convenient use and storage, the prepared solution can be poured into a used container from children’s nasal drops.

The shelf life of a self-prepared solution is 7–10 days.

Can sprays be used?

Sprays are not recommended for use by children under one year of age. There are sprays that, according to the manufacturer, can be used from birth, for example, AQUALOR Baby, due to the minimum pressure when spraying. However, only a doctor can determine the advisability of using a spray to relieve nasal congestion. Otolaryngologists and pediatricians do not recommend using drugs in the form of a spray for newborns and infants, since the solution is supplied into the nasal passages under pressure and can damage the baby’s auditory tube. Be sure to read the instructions before use. In addition, there is a risk of mucus and infection getting into the auditory tube and sinuses, which can cause sinusitis and otitis media. This is especially true for babies who cannot yet sit up on their own, and in a lying position it is easiest for mucus to get from the nose into the auditory tube without using a spray. Here are a few statements from doctors from the Russian Medical Server website (http://www.rusmedserv.com):

Children under 1 year of age should not take medications in the form of a spray.

Nasal spray is prohibited (according to the instructions) in children under 5 years of age, due to the peculiarities of registration and the form of release itself - most drugs in the form of nasal sprays are not used in children under 5–6 years of age, although Aqua Maris in the form of a spray, for example, is allowed from 1 year .

Nasal sprays are really dangerous, undesirable, if I remember correctly, even up to two years, not up to a year.

It is clear that there are situations when instillation alone is not enough. For example, in case of colds and acute respiratory viral infections, snot must be constantly removed so that the infection does not remain deep in the baby’s nose. After instilling drops or saline in this case, doctors recommend using a special safe device - an aspirator.

How to rinse a newborn baby's nose

The simplest and most effective way to clean the nose of a child in the first month of life is to instill a saline solution, which can be purchased at a pharmacy or prepared by yourself (1 teaspoon of table salt per 1 liter of boiled water).

A newborn baby cannot yet hold his head up on his own, so the procedure is performed in a supine position.

  1. Lay the baby on his back.
  2. Turn its head to the side and drip the saline solution into the nasal passage that is located above.
  3. Turn the head in the other direction and perform the same manipulations with the other nasal passage.
  4. Remove mucus from the nose using cotton swabs or a cotton swab, inserting them into the nostril no more than 1 cm and gently turning.

Gently remove discharge with a cotton swab after rinsing

Dangerous method: washing with breast milk

Young mothers often hear strong advice from their grandmothers to put breast milk into the baby’s nose. They believe that breast milk can be used to cleanse the baby's nasal cavity. However, this is the greatest misconception, since breast milk does not have disinfecting properties, but, on the contrary, is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and can turn into a big disaster for the baby. For example, inflammatory processes may occur in the sinuses or nasal mucosa. Therefore, it is important to remember that if breast milk gets into the baby’s nose, for example, when the child chokes on milk, it is necessary to rinse the nasal cavity with saline solution. In this case, you will prevent the development of infection and preserve the health of the child.

How to rinse the nose of a baby older than a month

Cleaning the nose using saline solution or drops

While the child is not yet able to hold his head up on his own, it is best to clean the nose while lying down, following the same procedure as for a newborn.

If the baby is already holding his head more or less confidently, the procedure will change slightly.

  1. Hold the child upright.
  2. Using a pipette or syringe, inject the saline solution into your nose without applying pressure.
  3. Tilt the baby's head slightly forward so that excess liquid can flow out easily.
  4. Remove discharge with a tissue or cotton swab.

Spray cleaning

The use of sprays in each specific case must be agreed with a pediatrician or otolaryngologist. If a doctor whom you trust, for certain indications, has prescribed nasal rinsing using a spray for a child under one year of age, the action plan is as follows.

  1. In an upright position, turn your baby's head to the side.
  2. Insert the tip of the nozzle into the upper nostril and moisten the nasal cavity with one long press (1-2 seconds).
  3. Carry out the same procedure with the other nostril.
  4. If necessary, remove accumulated mucus with an aspirator.

The instructions usually indicate that the duration of spraying depends on the degree of nasal congestion.

Video: using Physiomer spray

Remember that the safest and at the same time effective way to treat a runny nose and relieve nasal congestion is to instill saline or similar drops into the nasal passages.

Reviews from parents

Of course, if a mother tried some remedy and it helped her child, then she most likely will not experiment with other options, but will continue to use only this drug in the future. Therefore, parents' opinions are quite subjective. Using the example of reviews from the website irecommend.ru about nasal rinsing preparations, let’s consider which drug is more preferred: saline solution, Aqua Maris Children’s drops or Aqualor Baby spray.

Parents generally give preference to saline solution; it received the highest possible score of 5 points. Advantages:

  • can be used from birth;
  • you can prepare it yourself (shelf life will be limited to 7–10 days);
  • can be used for any type of runny nose: allergic, physiological, viral.

Every mother always has a choice: buy saline solution or its equivalent. I chose saline solution for myself and use only it.

Saline solution does not cause side effects. This is an excellent product for nasal rinsing and inhalation.

Aqualor baby spray, a remedy for the common cold, was given an overall rating of 4.6 out of 5 points. The drug is made on the basis of a solution of sea salt with various additives. The medicine is more expensive than saline, but no less effective, according to parents' reviews.

Aqualor baby spray is made on the basis of natural sea water. The drug is safe, makes breathing easier, is suitable for both treatment and prevention, and is also used from the first days of life to effectively clean the nose.

The product quickly relieves swelling (not as quickly as special drops, of course, you need to rinse your nose more often, but it is absolutely safe), and makes breathing easier. A runny nose goes away faster.

The disadvantages include the high cost and inconvenience of use, since after releasing the spray button, the spray continues to spray for a couple of seconds.

Parents rated Aqua Maris nasal drops 4.3 points.

The drops are 100% natural and painlessly cleanse the nose. They can be used for babies from one month old.

Disadvantages: high cost, short shelf life after opening (45 days).

Video: Dr. Komarovsky’s advice on how to rinse the nose of children

Most drugs for eliminating runny nose in children are made based on a salt solution. They come in various forms, but are not always suitable for all ages. It is important to remember that the use of sprays is contraindicated for children under one year of age, since rinsing a baby’s nose under pressure can lead to infection in the sinuses and auditory tube. The rest of the solutions in the form of a solution are effective and have advantages and disadvantages, so a mother can choose a medicine for her baby based on personal experience or based on reviews of other parents and doctors’ recommendations.

How to properly rinse a baby's nose

The mother should always pay attention to the condition of the baby. The baby cannot say for himself what is bothering him, which creates discomfort, so the mother should monitor his condition and, if there is a need, try to help the child. Quite often a child has a stuffy nose; there can be several reasons for this condition. For example, a mother does not properly care for her newborn and does not clean his nose.

Another reason is the rather dry air in the nursery, where the baby spends his time. In addition, a child can become infected with a viral infection from relatives or mother.

All this causes disruption of the breathing process, which creates a problem for the baby: he cannot suckle and becomes irritable. When feeding, the baby tries to breathe through his mouth and swallows air, as a result of which the baby burps. If the discharge in the mucous membrane is abundant, it can cause a cough in the baby, since when the child is lying down, mucus flows down the throat, irritating it. The best treatment for nasal congestion is rinsing.

How can you rinse the nose of a newborn baby ↑

You can win the fight against snot by using an integrated approach. For example, you should definitely ventilate the room, increasing the humidity level in it. To do this, you can hang wet diapers and place containers with water. The best way is to purchase a special humidifier.

You definitely need to clean your baby's nose. You can’t literally pick dried crusts out of your nasal cavity. They must first be softened so that they themselves freely free the cavity. You can use the simplest remedy - saline solution, or you can buy something from pharmaceutical drugs. The choice is quite large. These can be sprays or drops. And there is no shortage of names: aquamaris, physiomer, solinom, dolphin and other drugs that are always in stock at any pharmacy.

Many mothers use a special bulb that sucks out mucus from the spout. But pediatricians do not recommend using this method often, since the nasal mucosa dries out in this way. It is important to rinse your nose before eating. Even if it seems to you that the problem has already been solved, it is best to play it safe and free the baby’s nose again, he will be grateful to you, because in this case he will be able to suck without irritation.

If the nose is washed out, and the baby is also breathing with difficulty, you can try drops that have vasoconstrictor properties. It is important to understand that drugs such as vibration, Nazivin, Otrivin do not perform a therapeutic function, they only help reduce swelling of the mucous membrane, thereby making breathing easier. The use of these medications will allow the child to live a full life: eat, sleep, play. But such drugs need to be used up to 3 times a day. If mom finds purulent discharge in her nose, this means that there is an infection in the cavity. It should be treated with protargol drops.

How to properly rinse a child's nose with saline ↑

Our grandmothers also used saline solution for hygienic and medicinal purposes, most of them making it themselves. To do this, take half a teaspoon of table salt, a pinch of soda and stir it all in a glass of warm water. The water must be filtered and boiled in advance. This solution can be used to rinse the baby's nose. It is also bought in pharmacy chains, the cost of the product is pennies.

When we talk about a baby, this procedure causes panic in young mothers. Meanwhile, this is a fairly simple matter; it is important to prepare everything in advance so that you have it on hand. In addition, you need to act without fear, with confident movements and as quickly as possible so that the child does not scream. The infant should be swaddled so that his arms do not interfere with the mother’s procedure. The saline solution should be instilled from a pipette, and it should only serve to rinse the baby’s nose.

The baby's head should be tilted slightly back and 2 drops of saline solution should be placed into the nostril. If the right nostril is buried, then the baby’s head needs to be tilted slightly to the left, and the left one – accordingly, to the right. Some of the drops will fall into the newborn’s neck, causing negative emotions in him. It is important to ignore the scream and continue the procedure. You can’t instill too much at once; excess solution can get into the ear, causing otitis media. You shouldn’t try to soften the crusts with a pear; what you put in a pipette will be enough.

Before washing, it is important to prepare cotton swabs; there should be about six of them. They will be needed after mom has dripped saline solution into her nose. Next, using a flagellum soaked in oil (for better patency), mucus is removed from the nasal passage. The movements when inserting the cotton flagella should be screwing, it should be placed approximately 2 cm into the passage. The flagella should be used until the nostril is cleared.

How to rinse your nose with aquamaris ↑

Today, the drug Aquamaris can be called a leader in the treatment and preventive measures associated with diseases of the nasal cavity. Since the product contains ordinary sea salt, but has undergone a multi-stage purification system, it contains no bacteria or viral elements. It is supplemented with salts of natural origin and various trace elements. It can be successfully used not only by adults, but also by newborns and pregnant women.

Aquamaris is available in a variety of options: sprays, drops. Those intended for babies can be used from the first days of their life. The product for rinsing the nose of infants consists of several bottles made of plastic, each with a volume of 10 ml drops. When rinsing the nose, the drug is carefully instilled directly from the bottle into the nasal passages. It is important to limit the amount of fluid so that it does not enter the ear through the Eustachian tube, which can lead to inflammation.

If aquamaris is prescribed for treatment, it should be used four times a day, dripping 2 drops into each nostril. The course of treatment is up to a month. For prevention purposes, aquamaris can be given to a newborn, 1-2 drops 3 times a day. To soften the crusts in the nose, you can use aquamaris, instilling as much as it takes to soften the contents of the nose. Excess drug is removed with a cotton pad.

How to rinse your nose at home. Video

Rinse your nose at home.

Whether it’s worth “bothering” about this is up to you to decide. I will just give a hint to those who need it and give others something to think about. About myself, I will say that neither me nor my brother had their nose washed out when we were children.

Even I didn’t wash my little children’s noses on purpose, although I approached the issue of my children’s health responsibly. She dripped and splashed what the pediatrician prescribed. And I remembered the advice of my grandmother, the healer, and used them from time to time. It does not interfere.

I just didn’t know that, it turns out, you can and should wash the inside of your nose periodically. And that there are people who do this regularly, during hygiene procedures. (I’ll tell you a secret: now my whole family, including me, know how to do this.)

You probably think that grandma’s advice will apply to juice from onions, carrots, beets or other vegetables or fruits. Or will nanny Irina advise you to use Esmarch's mug? - Oh no.

In this article, I propose to familiarize yourself with modern, simple means and methods of rinsing the nose at home, the most comfortable in our time, which does not take much time and effort. This procedure will help us out from many diseases if carried out on time and correctly.

Few people rinse their nose, even when it’s very hot. We don’t think it’s necessary, we don’t have time, we don’t know how, we’re afraid, we’re lazy. We were late and it was completely blocked. It’s much easier to put something nasty in your nose, but whether it will help or not is the question.

Since there are very few experienced Internet users and it is quite difficult for an ignorant person to find the necessary information at the right time without running into advertising projects, I suggest you work with me to figure out what is useful and what is not. I suggest you “separate the wheat from the chaff” yourself.

When and why to rinse your nose

Nowadays, there is more and more need for nasal rinsing. This is due, first of all, to the environment, hazardous industries and other harmful factors.

What pains me the most is the issue of mothers, grandmothers, nannies and all others who “slip” strollers with children closer to the roadway overflowing with concentrated car exhaust gases.

Example. Two people with children meet at a traffic light and, shouting above the noise of traffic, chatter for an hour. At this time, their children purify the street air with their lungs. This is always unclear to me. After all, we don’t get so much of this nasty stuff, our face is much higher. And kids sometimes inhale everything directly from the exhaust pipe.

What can I say? Another time I would have hit these adults over the head with a heavy club. It happens that I have nowhere to go, and if the need arises to cross the road with a child, I do it as carefully and quickly as possible.

Take care of your children. Please review the complete information. Rehabilitation doctor S.N. discusses a lot of interesting things here. Zinatulin and consultant doctor E.V. Zotova. Remember the most important points.

I hope you really enjoyed this video! And you also remember the relationship between the parameters “temperature and humidity” in the home, and especially in the child’s room. It should not be too hot, too dry or too humid. This is especially true for babies. I will write about this in detail another time.

To begin with, I will introduce you to a method that I personally don’t like at all; I haven’t used it. But my daughter treated my grandson this way once. It helps many people and is used in difficult situations. Especially with sinusitis. I advise you not to bring your child’s health or your own to such a state where you simply cannot do without this procedure. It is inconvenient, time-consuming and unpleasant.

Nasal rinsing “Cuckoo”

Some of us have gone through what is called “cuckoo”, which is prescribed by the doctor. Such washing is usually carried out in a clinic, hospital, or sanatorium. Several such daily procedures are prescribed, and now they have become paid.

For those who have never seen what this method is, I suggest you familiarize yourself with it. I specially found a short video where this is shown very well:

You should start rinsing your nose using the “cuckoo” method at the very beginning of the disease, at its first signs. If you are late, it may not help, or even harm some, causing complications.

We often get offended by doctors because, when we pay money to rinse our nose at the clinic, we do not get the desired result.

This happens most often because we arrive late for the appointment. As a rule, we miss the onset of the disease and mislead the doctor by giving false information about the initial time and symptoms. In the bustle of everyday life, we ourselves are sometimes inattentive to ourselves or our child and do not notice how illness creeps up.

If the doctor sees that there are contraindications and the method cannot be used, but prescribes it solely to replenish the budget, then this cannot be justified in any way, I think. Especially in relation to children.

The most sensible thing is to do prevention. Especially if someone next to us is already sick.

How to properly rinse your nose at home

You've already seen some of it in the first video. I offer you the following, after viewing which you will already know exactly how to properly rinse your and your child’s nose.

Dolphin system

I now use Dolphin with great pleasure and feel great, despite the fact that I often come into contact with those who suffer from “nasal runny”. And renovations at my house: dust, smells. Often the windows are wide open to help the walls dry faster. And outside it was either snowing or raining. It won't take long to catch a cold.

But flu and viruses avoid me, although I often come into contact with sick people. I’m simply not supposed to be sick due to my status. After all, I am a nanny for little ones, I don’t want to infect them. If I get sick, God forbid, my family will have a hard time without me.

I really like this invention. The main thing is to use strictly according to the instructions. First, adults need to learn, and then you can show it to children. Let them join from the age of four, as experts advise, or even later, as it suits you.

They sell exactly the same systems for children, only the bottle with a smaller stopper and the sachets contain not 2, but 1 gram of the composition. Children's - for children up to about 12 years old. It is beautifully written on them: “For washing children's noses.”

I don’t know how it is in Russia and Ukraine on the periphery, but here, in Kiev, you have to run to several pharmacies to find DOLPHIN (English: “dolphin”). In some pharmacies, pharmacists have not even heard of it.

Composition of sachets

Sea salt, soda, rose hip extract, licorice extract.

How do I use them

I regularly boil a full kettle in the evening for everyone so that I don’t have to wait for it to cool down in the morning.

Early in the morning, the first thing I do is wash my face and clean my nose. I pour a sachet of product (2 g) into the bottle and fill it with approximately 10 degrees boiled water to the 240 ml mark. I screw the cap on with the tube and close the hole with my finger. Lightly shake the bottle until the contents dissolve.

I lean over the bathtub or sink so that my forehead is parallel to the floor, at about a 90-degree angle. I calmly take a deep breath and hold my breath. I point the cap into my nose and lightly squeeze the bottle so that the liquid fills the freer nostril. I blot my nose with a napkin and send the other half of the liquid into the second nostril. I dry my nose again.

For some time I still have it “on the wet side”. Therefore, it is better to rinse your nose right away, and then get ready for work. After all, you should go out into the cold no earlier than minutes after the procedure. Otherwise, you can only make things worse for yourself.

If you are in a hurry, then in cold weather, and especially in frost, it is better not to risk it, so as not to get sick. I somehow hurried, then my nose “cryed” for half a day. If you didn’t have time in the morning, you’ll wash it in the evening.

Before going to bed, take a half-hour break after this procedure.

It is recommended to perform nasal hygiene 1-3 times a day, depending on your condition and the purpose of rinsing. The instructions describe in great detail how to prepare the product, how to wash your nose, indications and contraindications.

In a large family, such a set will definitely come in handy. Usually, one person tries it, then everyone buys it.

For me, one morning procedure is enough for prevention when the need arises. 30 sachets are enough for a whole month with daily hygiene.

It is important to recognize the onset of suspicious symptoms in time. It used to be that if I rode next to a sick person in a vehicle, I would quickly “be rendered harmless” at least a couple of times.

Aqua Maris device

Some people praise the Aqua Maris device. I can’t say anything about this, since I have never been able to see it with my own eyes. The set includes special sea salt and a special teapot - neti pot.

Syringes

We used to use syringes. I read somewhere that people cut off the top tip of the syringe, and some craftsmen even came up with various caps for them. Now in pharmacies there is a whole series, for children and adults, with and without tips.

Personally, I find it quite difficult to make the necessary pressure. Either there is no effect, then it goes to the forehead, it hurts. This product is not for me. Perhaps someone likes it.

Sea salt is used, sometimes soda is added, less often iodine. Mine too, some liked it and some didn’t.

Some people keep mineral water bottles with caps that have holes for drinking. Many people buy them for themselves or their children for school. We have not tried to use them for hygienic purposes; I cannot say whether they are convenient or not.

Jug mugs

Once, before we found out about the Dolphin, we decided to use the jug mugs that we had once brought from the Carpathians. They stood idle for a long time, reminding us of our trips to Truskavets. I think that many of you, having seen the first photo of the article, recognized these mugs.

For those who don’t know: they drink mineral water from them in sanatoriums and resorts, so as not to damage tooth enamel. I’ll tell you a secret: they don’t protect anything. It's better to use straws. But, having seen their variety, hardly anyone can resist the temptation to buy them, especially if there are children nearby.

Once upon a time, my grandson and I couldn’t resist and bought it. On my first trip, I remember we drank mineral water from them from the pump room in Truskavets and were happy. Of course, everything is in order.

Jala-neti. Nasal rinsing

Before this, one of the daughters washed her nose out of a teapot. For prevention. She does some yoga. She gave me a link to this video. I suggest you take a look if anyone is interested.

I don’t know anything about the lifestyle of yogis and their followers, but some points are interesting to me. I suggest you familiarize yourself with them.

Contraindications

  • Temperature 37.5°C or higher
  • Otitis
  • Epilepsy
  • Nasal tumors
  • Nosebleeds
  • Completely stuffy nose. You simply won't be able to carry out the procedure. If you manage to clear one nostril, then you can try to lightly direct the stream into it. Sometimes it can help to rinse the other nostril as well. But you can't overdo it. It is better to repeat the procedure twice, but without fanaticism.

How to rinse your and your child’s nose with Dolphin

I'll give you another short video. Don't forget: for children's noses there are children's systems with 1 gram sachets. You can buy sachets without a bottle.

I dare say that neither my mother, nor my grandmother, nor my great-grandmother knew anything about nasal rinsing. Perhaps there was no need. They used to live in Siberia. Air, water, food - everything was fresh and clean. Maybe they hurt less, I don’t know.

I once used folk methods, but I’ll write about that another time.

I will gladly accept good advice from you. I think that there are still popular methods of preventing and treating runny nose and other problems associated with the nose and nearby organs that have been proven over the years.

Or maybe this is all “nonsense with vegetable oil”, and rinsing the nose, especially with “folk remedies”, is not worthy of such attention? Your opinion is very valuable to me. I will be glad if you write a review.

Related materials:

Irina Olegovna, everything is written in such detail - detailed. Just great information for those who are faced with this problem.

I also sometimes used the Dolphin system. And the children also washed their noses with it.

Until I bought this system, we often used green tea. I brewed it and put 2-3 pipettes into each nostril. Then they carefully blew their noses. A very good recipe for treating a runny nose. By the way, we still use it now, when suddenly...

Thanks again for the advice.

And we used it. I will write about traditional methods of treating a runny nose later. Someone will need your hint, Irina. Thank you!

Thank you for such complete and detailed information, Irina! I made a solution for my children from sea salt, bought at a pharmacy, and put it into a pipette or a small syringe. And their grandchildren are buying some of the products you described. Thank you very much for this article, I think it will be useful.

Irina Olegovna! Thank you for such detailed information and especially for the information about Dolphin. As I understand it, it’s a very useful thing, especially in winter. I saw such a box in our pharmacy in Kharkov! I don’t remember which pharmacy, but I definitely saw it.

I looked at the video about a baby diving. And how parents are not afraid. It seems to be known that babies instinctively know how to swim and dive, but it’s still a little scary! When I was a child, my parents also allowed me to dive in the bathtub, and then, much later, my mother was surprised at how they had the courage to do it.

Elena, these are children trained in this. We wish we had schools like this!

I never thought about such unusual nasal hygiene; I washed my nose only when I was sick and it was the most disgusting procedure, precisely because it caused terrible discomfort and unpleasant sensations. And I saw a dolphin in our pharmacies, but I didn’t understand why it was needed, until one day I got sick and a friend told me about this method, I really liked it, it can’t be compared with regular washing, when you have to suck water from your palm))). And now I will know that it is necessary to rinse your nose regularly, and not just during illness!

That’s the “fun” thing: you’re unlikely to get sick! And if you also lead a healthy lifestyle, then no sores will stick at all.

Very relevant information for me, as a grandmother of two grandchildren. I remember how we, as children, washed our noses with sea water. And they had practically no runny nose, despite the fact that they swam from April to November. Excellent videos and tips. And the main thing for us is to do it, and not just watch and read!

That’s why I worked on the article for a long time, so that people would understand and use already tested methods for their benefit.

Yes, there are many ways to rinse your nose, fortunately now there are natural ready-made remedies, I have Aquamaris in my bathroom all year round, because it is useful to rinse your nose without waiting for a runny nose. And I came to this after suffering from sinusitis for quite a long time, they gave me “cuckoo”, punctures too, and when I started washing my nose with sea salt, all the problems went away, now I almost never even have a runny nose. I also taught my son to rinse his nose, so don’t be lazy, be sure to rinse your nose, you will be healthy and your loved ones will be healthy!

That’s right, I also came to this without waiting. Then fewer procedures will be needed, and the effect will be better.

Irina, thank you. There are so many interesting methods, some of which I have never heard of at all. And it happens that a runny nose cannot be cured. Once I went to the seaside and caught a cold there. The runny nose was terrible, even rinsing with sea water did not immediately help.

Lyudmila, depending on what you mean by “sea water”. If from the sea, this is not shown. It is with sea salt that there should be a solution, in the required proportions.

I remember from childhood it was instilled in us that people only bury the nose. There was no talk about washing. And that’s how it happens in life. Thanks for the information :)

The procedure is not pleasant, but effective. We also have a dolphin at home, and with its help I sometimes rinse my nose when things get really tight.

I myself bought a Dolphin a few years ago. Only he could help me. And before this I haven’t tried anything.

Thank you very much for your advice.

We are currently experiencing a flu epidemic and nasal rinsing is a good idea, by the way. In general, this should be done every day, as doctors advise. And there are many ways, whatever you like

Irina, I didn’t have a good experience with rinsing with Dolphin :)

Now I’m afraid to wash it for myself and my child. After tooth extraction in September 2012, there was a draft in the transport. So I’m on the soap... In two days my eye “swollen”. At that time, the ENT specialist worked only 2 times a week, he was on training... In general, everything almost ended very badly - as a result, he had sinusitis, not only with punctures, but also with IVs for a whole week.

The remains of Dolphin's bags are still lying there. It turns out that it’s easier for me to wash my nose with laundry soap.

At first I studied all the videos slowly. Then I bought systems. Then I read all the instructions very carefully. And she did everything very accurately. Almost step by step, testing yourself. And in comparison with a syringe and a jug, the procedure seemed very gentle and quite effective to me.

By the way, I received a “gift” as a reward. I began to smell better, even faint ones.

we instill Aqua Maris and pump out the nozzles with a baby vac aspirator

I will write an article for babies later. Everything is different there than here.

It is very difficult for a small child to rinse his nose. He begins to choke and gets very scared.

But little ones can't.

How many options it turns out! I didn't even suspect it! Thanks for the educational program.

I know that rinsing the nose is very useful and relieves many diseases. No wonder yogis always practice it. But for me this procedure is like torture. I can't even think about it.

I recently ran out of Dolphin sachets, so I diluted sea salt. But I was a couple of days late—either I didn’t get enough sleep, or I was lazy. A slight runny nose appeared, the mucous membrane was slightly swollen. And you know, rinsing your nose turned out to be not a pleasant experience; it made your brain spin. I was even confused. Everything was so great until now, but then such an oversight happened.

Once again I was convinced that it is better to warn than to be late. Or maybe I took too much salt. I don’t even know what my nose didn’t like this time. It’s better from a teapot in this case. So everyone must choose for themselves, no matter who praises what!

Oh, and this is an unpleasant procedure... But, of course, it is necessary and useful!

For me, the procedure of rinsing my nose used to be not just unpleasant, but terrible. When I started using the jug mug, it became more pleasant, but also not entirely convenient.

But the dolphin is very soft and good. I think that the bags will run out, I will make a solution with sea salt. But not as concentrated as before, but weak.

Rinsing your nose with just plain water also gives a good effect. But this is more suitable for prevention.

Previously, when I lived in Khabarovsk, I was often sick, and often had to resort to this procedure. I appreciate it and know how to do it. I use a regular small teapot and put a nipple with a large hole on the tip to make it more convenient. Now that I moved to Bulgaria, I forgot about the cold, thank God. And you, Irisha, don’t get sick! I wish you health!

Subscribed to your news!

And I took on a massive attack of the virus from flu patients. I had to take action. I washed my nose again yesterday morning. And it even became funny! — One procedure was enough for now. Let's see what happens next.

It is probably necessary for someone to show and suggest if anything happens. I think that this can be done periodically.

It is especially important to show children by example. And, preferably not when their nose is already very stuffy and when they may not like this procedure. And in advance, for prevention, so that the first procedures leave a good impression.

Thank you for such a great and detailed article. I never thought that rinsing was a whole science, but it turns out to be so. After all, here you also need to approach it carefully, after all, it is an intervention in the body. It’s good that washing frees the mucous membrane. I liked that you listed all the types of devices, solutions, and did not forget to mention contraindications. Low bow to you for this! I often catch colds myself, and a runny nose makes it difficult to breathe. I use droplets all the time and forget about rinsing. I am subscribing to your wonderful blog!

I’ve never done such procedures, but now I often come across such recipes, but it’s scary. Thank you for such detailed recommendations.

It's okay! For me, the “cuckoo” is much scarier. It’s better, of course, when people never suffer from a runny nose at all and they don’t have to think about such procedures.

Thank you so much for the article. This is exactly what I need. I feel like my nose is stuffy. I once tried to rinse my nose, but completely abandoned the idea. I just didn’t know how to do it correctly. Tweet from me.

It is important to never rush, even if you already have experience. And don’t over-salt if you dilute the salt yourself. The procedure is quick, but not rushed. The main thing is not to press hard on the bottle. You need to gently and carefully fill your nose if you use a bottle from Dolphin, so that it doesn’t hurt your brain. Then everything will be top notch!

I read about this a long time ago, but didn’t apply it. And everything you do is so interesting and detailed, I wanted to try it.

I had a negative experience with nasal rinsing. I was advised to rinse my nose by an ENT specialist from the clinic where my pregnancy was treated, not for indications, but for prevention, it was autumn, the period of colds was beginning, so to prevent these same colds, she advised me to do such procedures...

As a result, I developed erosion (I didn’t even know that this happened), when I went to another doctor, she scolded me and said, don’t listen to these advertisements, you absolutely can’t do any preventive rinses. By the way, she said that under no circumstances should children under five years of age be rinsed; they have a slightly different structure of the nasopharynx. In general, I believed her then and decided to prevent it - this is not for us))

Yes, in the article I emphasized that small children’s noses are treated in a different way. And in the videos they clarify that you shouldn’t do this until you are four years old. But here, knowing their children, each parent sets this boundary himself. Someone shares their experience that their granddaughter perfectly learned how to rinse her nose at the age of three, but for some children it’s too early to do this procedure at seven.

We used Dolphin, really liked it, it’s a good product.

That's what I like. The packages ran out, I tried using a bottle of Dolphin with sea salt. I didn't like it anymore. It is better to rinse the kettle with salt. I’m really thinking, maybe there’s some kind of trick in those bags.

I've been using aquamaris sometimes lately. In the mornings I have such a sneeze that I have no strength. And you wash your nose with this spray bottle, and everything goes away. It's probably due to the dust...

I came across your article just in time. My daughter (2 years old) got sick and my mother-in-law insists on rinsing her nose. And I'm afraid. It turns out - I’m rightly afraid - it’s too early for her to do such procedures)))

Thanks for the useful article. I would like to share my nasal rinse. In our family, we rinse our nose with the Cuckoo kit. They have a convenient bottle with a curved spout. We tried it with our hands - it poured out, the cup with the spout was not comfortable, we specially bought these in Truskavets. The so-called “Teapots” devices were also not impressive. So if anyone is still undecided, I recommend the cuckoo, and it’s not expensive.

I have never seen such sets. I looked at it now in the search, it turns out that it was done according to the Dolphin principle, only for the nose. Comfortable. I'll try to look in Kyiv. As soon as I buy it, I will add a photo to the article. Thank you, Alexandra.
