Listen to your body. If from time to time an incomprehensible lump appears in your throat and you don’t even want to cough, but just grunt, congratulations! You are a contender for the “kill your lungs” category. Because this is the first sign. It will get worse.
How to get rid of smoker's cough? First, let's figure out why we need to get rid of it and why it takes so long to go away on its own.
Quit smoking - it got worse
When a person stops smoking, his body gradually cleanses itself. And the lungs first. It will take quite a long time for them to cleanse themselves. The longer you smoke, the longer the cleansing will take. For example, with 2 years of experience, the process will take about a month. And if you smoked for more than 10 years, then you will get rid of cough for about 12 months. Even using aids.
What are they? It can be:
- medications
- dietary supplements
- folk remedies
- lifestyle (physiology)
If a set of measures is used, it is advisable to accurately remember or write down all doses of medications, tinctures and decoctions taken. The fact is that any smoker’s cough noticeably intensifies as soon as a person completely gets rid of the bad habit. And as the cough worsens, he begins to increase the dose of the medicine. Over time, the drug accumulates in the body (this is especially true for plant-based products and various herbal infusions or decoctions). And then it starts to act. Sometimes, this can do more harm than good. If the cilia of the lungs cannot cope with the amount of sputum secreted, then it may stagnate and fester. Is this what a person achieves by quitting smoking?
Some people try to get rid of smoker's cough by continuing to puff in their usual manner while undergoing treatment. It works, but not for long. Over time, an increasingly larger dose of the drug is required, and at one “wonderful” moment the drugs stop working.
It turns out that in order to stop coughing, you first have to quit smoking. Otherwise, all the efforts and resources spent will be useless.
If you quit smoking, you will have to undergo treatment
The first thing you should do is see a doctor. A therapist, or better yet, a pulmonologist. He will look at the test results, study your medical history and, on this basis, prescribe the most appropriate medications or dietary supplements. You may have to undergo a course of physical therapy. It all depends on the situation.
It is highly not recommended to choose a mucolytic agent on your own. Because some are suitable for dry coughs, others for coughs with a high level of sputum, and others have certain contraindications.
But, it is quite possible to help your lungs with the help of traditional medicine. By the way, do not forget to warn your doctor about the infusions and decoctions you are taking. This may come in handy and you will get a more gentle dose of chemistry in the recipe.
The best option is to consume dairy products. Whey, kefir, milk, buttermilk. Just 200 ml in the morning and your lungs will thank you.
The juice of ordinary black radish, together with natural honey, which is used to treat infectious types of cough, is a great help for former smokers. Most of the country's population knows how to make a hole in a root vegetable and put honey there. This method is simple, but gives very little healing potion. But you need to take it 2 tbsp. l. morning and evening for at least 30 days (assuming a healthy gastrointestinal tract). Where can I get so many radishes?
We do this: take 1 kg of pure honey and 2 kg of washed, peeled root vegetables. Finely chop or pass through a meat grinder. Mix in a glass container and leave for 12 hours. Afterwards we filter and store strictly in the refrigerator. It turns out 1.5-1.7 liters of healing syrup. Now that's definitely enough.
Advice. It is advisable to take lime honey. It is excellent for treating the upper respiratory tract.
Of the herbs that have proven themselves well as fighters against smoker's cough, we can especially highlight thyme, marshmallow, chamomile, plantain, and thyme. These plants help the cilia of the lung epithelium to recover. Therefore, cleansing occurs faster and better. Young pine needles and onions are also excellent folk healers.
It should be noted that at the beginning of taking herbal preparations, the cough intensifies significantly, and the amount of sputum increases. Don't be scared, this is a normal reaction of the respiratory system to your help. This is how the body tries to get rid of toxins faster.
The color of the sputum can be dark brown and even coal black. This is good. This means the lungs become cleaner. But if the sputum is light, with a greenish or pink tint, this is a reason to immediately consult a specialist. It’s better to play it safe, get tested and rule out serious diseases.
How to drink herbs correctly for a smoker's cough? Each plant has its own recipe. For example, chamomile, thyme or plantain should be brewed with boiling water. The calculation is simple: 2 tbsp. l. dry raw materials, brew 200 ml of boiling water. Cover with a lid and let sit for 15 minutes. Strain and take 50 ml 3 times a day.
But onions work better using a different system: put 1 medium turnip and 1 ripe apple of the same size in a saucepan. Do not peel or peel, just wash thoroughly with a brush! Add 1 liter of clean water and sugar. Boil over high heat for 10 minutes. Take half a glass 2 times a day.
Another miracle cure is young pine needles. They need to be collected in the spring. Then dry, grind and mix with natural honey in a ratio of 1 to 1 by weight. Take it like this: 1 tbsp. l. The mixture is stirred in 250 ml of warm water, drunk in small sips, morning and evening.
The method is good for its multiple benefits:
- During the collection, you get physical activity plus the healing air of the pine forest.
- By taking the product regularly, the body is nourished with vitamins and minerals.
- The essential oils of needles and the healing properties of honey help the lungs in the fight against cough.
- The mixture causes some aversion to cigarette smoke. Even to someone else.
Quit smoking - cleanse your lungs with exercise
Stop, stop! Why don't you want to read further? No one is going to describe the well-known truths about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. We also won’t persuade you to do a sprint every morning or become a world-class gymnast.
Just an interesting fact: the blood circulation of any person increases even from 20 bends and 10 squats. So why not start with them? In the morning, instead of the usual cigarette, go to the balcony. They bowed and sat down. We stand and breathe. It’s already a good step to saturate the body with a good portion of oxygen.
If you have the desire, continue to increase your physical activity. If it doesn't, then that's enough. How will this help get rid of smoker's cough? As a rule, tobacco lovers have excellent shortness of breath. Even with little effort they lack air. This means that the inhalation is as deep as possible, the flow of oxygen into the blood increases. The blood supply to the lungs itself increases, and the work of the epithelium increases. Cleansing clogged bronchi becomes more intense.
It turns out to be a kind of mutual responsibility: if you breathe deeper, your bronchi will be cleaner.
Advice. Naturally, if the balcony faces a polluted street, then it is better to squat with the windows closed. Or you will have to go to the park next door and try running there. You can start from 100 meters, gradually increasing the distance. If running is not yet possible for you, then your credo is simply fast walking.
If symptoms appear, stop smoking!
The classic smoker's cough is very easy to diagnose on your own. You don't need to be a licensed doctor to do this.
- First stage. Feeling of a constant lump in the throat. I want to either cough or snort. The feeling does not go away during the day. In the morning I have a slight coughing attack. You can get rid of it in 30 days.
- Second stage. Wet cough after the first cigarette in the morning every day. With a lot of phlegm. It also occurs with a deep breath, laughter, or headwind. Periodic incomprehensible weakness, feeling of a “cast iron” head, sleepy. Most often it goes away within 3-5 months.
- Third stage. Very long morning cough. Tearing, with strong muscle tension. Most often dry, completely blocking air access. Severe burning pain occurs in the area of the bronchi and slightly below. There have been cases where people broke their ribs when experiencing such a cough. Fatigue, severe regular fatigue. It takes 9 to 12 months for complete relief.
A characteristic sign of a smoker's cough is the absence of elevated temperature at any stage and very profuse sputum. An attack can be caused by deep yawning, physical exertion, normal laughter or a simple breath.
Have you noticed these symptoms? Start thinking. Otherwise, you will soon spit out pieces of your lungs instead of clots of phlegm. Of course, this is a metaphor, but the meaning does not change.
Valuable advice for those who are determined to quit smoking
Don't try to use magic patches or pills. Man is always driven by fear. And here you just need to choose - the fear of dying ahead of time or the fear of “how will I survive without cigarettes?” You started coughing, so quit it yourself. Nobody can force you. Do not want? Smoke and cough. "Greetings!"
If a person is tired of coughing and he, having given up enriching tobacco magnates personally, continues to frequently inhale other people’s smoke, then there is no need to treat the cough. Because passive smoking has an even worse effect. The bronchi are trying to cleanse themselves, but people add toxins and resins to the fresh stuff. How lovely! Can you tell me where I can buy new lungs, since I’m being such a pig with them?
Before taking herbal remedies, carefully read the instructions and feel free to reduce the dose by three times. You will have to drink these decoctions for a long time, but your body is not accustomed to it. Listen to yourself. Has it gotten worse? Everything is fine? This means we are gradually coming to the recommended dose.
And further. Even if fate is favorable to you and you, after 20 years of a bad habit, do not know what a smoker’s cough is, then listen to your household in the morning. They also got a hit from your cigarette. Cackling and hooting their throats? You are well done! They are also at risk, thanks to your “innocent” hobby.
It is impossible to continue smoking and get rid of smoker's cough. You can get temporary relief and that's it. And aren’t you tired of scaring your household with your morning “cackling” and annoying passers-by and colleagues during the day? Tired of it? Make a choice and let it be the right one, for the benefit of you and your body. Be healthy!

Smoker's cough
Smoker's cough torments those smokers who have a long history.
Toxins cause irritation of bronchial receptors, the volume of mucus increases, and the removal of sputum is made difficult by the fact that when smoking, the hairs of the bronchial epithelium stick together. There is modern medical and alternative folk treatment for unpleasant symptoms and the causes of their occurrence.
How to get rid of smoker's cough
A guaranteed way to get rid of smoker's cough is to quit smoking. At the same time, the cough will continue and even intensify throughout the month. The body gets rid of toxins. It takes 4-9 months to completely clear the lungs and restore breathing.
The pulmonologist will conduct research, determine how to cure cough in this particular case, and select an individual drug treatment regimen.
Treatment with medications can be combined with folk remedies. It is advisable to consult a doctor or at least study the composition of the medications you are taking so as not to make a mistake in choosing the appropriate remedy. Herbs contain certain elements that accumulate in the body. Possible negative consequences.
There are various preventive and restorative measures:
- strengthening the immune system;
- sports activities and walks in the park;
- regular visits to a bath or sauna scented with essential oils;
- healthy lifestyle.

What are the symptoms?
A smoker's cough stands out from other types of cough.
Signs and symptoms of smoker's cough:
- regular attacks in the morning or with the first cigarette;
- attacks when taking a sharp or deep breath;
- prolonged involuntary expectoration;
- copious mucus secretion;
- brown mucus;
- wheezing and heaviness when inhaling and exhaling;
- heart failure during walking and physical activity;
- the occurrence of migraines;
- overwork and lethargy;
- lack of temperature;
- absence of additional symptoms of a possible disease.
A smoker's cough can be wet or dry. When wet, phlegm is produced. This cough is typical for smokers with little experience and practically does not cause concern.
Over time, the cough intensifies and becomes dry. It is this type of cough that is painful and dangerous. It leads to increased difficulty in contracting respiratory function and internal muscle tension.
Take the smoking test
What treatment is chosen?
Treatment options for smoker's cough depend on the quality of the cough and whether the patient has other health problems.
You will definitely have to go through four stages on the road to recovery!
Getting rid of a bad habit
This stage is important for the effectiveness of subsequent medication measures. Otherwise, a restorative course will eliminate symptoms, but does not guarantee recovery. If possible, try to avoid smoking areas - passive smoking also affects the condition of the bronchi and lungs.
An electronic cigarette will help ease the process of quitting smoking. It does not contain toxins that settle on the bronchi.
Comprehensive examination by a doctor
Diagnosis is carried out by a pulmonologist to select appropriate medication measures.
- X-ray studies (fluorography);
- visual and superficial examination;
- analyzes of physiological fluids (blood and sputum);
- additional diagnostics as decided by the doctor.
↑
Drug effects on pathology
Mucolytics are often prescribed - drugs to thin mucus and facilitate its removal from the lungs. Among them there are syrups and inhalation solutions. They are combined with medications with an expectorant effect.
In the presence of inflammatory processes, treatment with antibiotics and hormonal therapy is prescribed.
Correct consolidation of the obtained result
To avoid possible relapses and repeated visits to a pulmonologist, after completion of treatment it is recommended:
- a course of physiotherapy;
- sanatorium treatment;
- strengthening the immune system;
- outdoor sports.

What medications treat the disease?
How to treat a smoker's cough? The main factors when prescribing treatment are the nature of the cough and the presence of complications in the patient.
Based on the results of a comprehensive examination, the doctor prescribes:
- Expectorants. They are divided into two groups according to the mechanism of action:
- Secretomotor agents stimulate expectoration. Smokers are usually prescribed: Bronchogen, licorice root syrup, essential oils.
- Mucolytic (or secretolytic) agents thin the sputum. They help cope with phlegm production and make the cough less sore. The most commonly used are: “Mukaltin”, “Fluimucil”, “Fervex”. In addition to syrups, lollipops and special cough candies are also used. They have a milder effect, but can be taken once every three to four hours.
- Bronchodilators. Eliminate bronchospasm by acting on the tone of the bronchial muscles. The most widely used medicine is Broncholitin.
- Antibiotics. They are selected individually, depending on the sensitivity of the microflora and the presence of allergic reactions. Prescribed in the presence of inflammatory processes and chronic bronchitis. The course lasts about 7-10 days, and in case of prolonged exacerbation - up to 14 days.
- Steroid hormones (bronchospasmolytics and glucocorticoids). Prescribed for obstructive bronchitis. They are selected individually, just like antibiotics.

Useful video on the topic
What expectorant is most often recommended?
The most popular expectorant is Bronchogen. It is used for both treatment and prevention of bronchopulmonary diseases. “Bronchogen” is a biologically active supplement (BAA), not a drug.
It is contraindicated in the following categories of patients:
- people with allergies to components;
- pregnant women;
- breastfeeding.
To remove mucus from the throat, bronchi and lungs, doctors prescribe Fluimucil, selecting an individual dosage and form of the drug.
- solution for internal use 20 mg/ml and 40 mg/ml;
- inhalation solution and injection solution;
- granules for preparing essence for internal use;
- effervescent cough tablets.
"Fluimucil" contains acetylcysteine and auxiliary components. They vary depending on the form of release of the drug. "Fluimucil" is prohibited for patients suffering from gastric and duodenal ulcers. Otherwise, the contraindications coincide with the contraindications of the drug "Bronchogen".
Cure illness using traditional methods
Properly selected decoctions and infusions can improve the effect of drug treatment. These products can be used as inhalations in combination with steam heating. They are also recommended for preventive purposes and for general strengthening of the immune system.
The most popular folk remedies.
- Milk serum. Take warm before breakfast every day. Effect: thins mucus.
- Decoction of black radish in honey. Mix the juice of 1 kg of black radish with 0.5 kg of honey melted in a water bath. Take 40 grams of the resulting mixture in the morning and evening before meals for 90 days. Effect: removes nicotine tar.
- A mixture of aloe, honey, birch, linden and olive oil. Mix 1.5 kg of linden honey melted in a water bath with 300 grams of crushed aloe leaves, 50 grams of birch buds, add 50 grams of linden inflorescences and 200 ml of olive oil. Dosage: 40 grams five times a day for about 30 days. Effect: restores strength and improves the functioning of the respiratory system.
- Infusion of thyme and dandelion juice. Steam one teaspoon of thyme in half a glass of water for 10 minutes, then mix with 20 ml of dandelion juice. Use warm in the morning and evening. Effect: cleansing the lungs and bronchi of toxins.
- Infusion of horsetail and lungwort. Mix horsetail and lungwort in equal parts, add 200 ml of cold water to a spoonful of the mixture, leave for several hours, and boil for five minutes. Recommended dosage: 100 ml three times a day. Effect: restoration of respiratory system functions.
- Coniferous essential oils for room aromatization and herbal medicine in a bath or sauna.
When choosing a folk remedy, you should take into account the presence of food allergies and individual intolerance to the components.
The most effective cough syrups
When selecting a drug, the specialist is guided by the nature of the patient’s cough. The most popular syrups:
- "Doctor Mom" is a bronchodilator, reduces inflammation and swelling in the organs of the respiratory system, and a cough expectorant for smokers. You should take 10 ml three times a day.
- "Gedelix" is an anti-inflammatory drug that restores breathing and clears the bronchi of mucus. Frequency of administration: one tablespoon in the morning and before bedtime.
- “Biocalyptol” has a combined effect: it is anti-inflammatory and expectorant. Has antimicrobial and antispasmodic effect. Prescribed for dry cough. Reception conditions: ml per day.
- "Eucabal" is a combined effect, a medicine for smoker's cough. It thins mucus and has an expectorant, bactericidal and protective effect. You should take one tablespoon three to five times a day.
- Licorice root syrup is an expectorant of plant origin. Relieves inflammation, spasms, stimulates the immune system. Recommended dosage and frequency of administration: 15 mg three or four times a day after meals.

What to do if brown sputum appears
Those who have been smoking for many years produce brown sputum in the morning due to the fact that the body is trying to get rid of toxins brought into the respiratory system along with smoke.
- Inhalation course. Moisturizes the mucous membrane, thins accumulated mucus and dilates the bronchi. The drugs work as anesthetics and analgesics. For inhalation use:
- salt;
- soda;
- ammonia;
- herbal decoctions and infusions;
- essential oils.
- Taking expectorants. The doctor may prescribe both secretomotor and mucolytic agents in tablets, capsules, syrups and lozenges.
- Breathing exercises. Used in complex treatment. Facilitates coughing and removes mucus from the body. The most popular is the complex of A. N. Strelnikova.
Constant medical supervision is required. A qualified specialist will monitor changes in dynamics and adjust the health course.
Lack of adequate treatment sometimes leads to the appearance of blood in the sputum. Coughing up blood indicates the presence of one of the complications.
A possible reason for the abundance of blood in the mucus leaving the bronchi is:
You should immediately consult a specialist and not self-medicate. It is important to tell what symptoms accompany a cough with bloody discharge, whether there are ongoing health problems, and what illnesses you have had in the recent past.
Mandatory examination and treatment procedures:
- bronchoscopy - the airways are examined using a tube to detect the source of bleeding;
- fluorography;
- computed tomography – if additional data is required;
- cough medicines and antibiotics.
Slight bloody discharge when coughing, most often due to irritation of the mucous membrane. The doctor will prescribe treatment and recommend preventive measures: quit smoking or reduce the number of cigarettes consumed.
Impact on chronic pathology
Lack of adequate treatment leads to chronic bronchitis. According to statistics, 90% of smokers suffer from it.
The most effective ways to eliminate the consequences of this disease:
- bronchodilators (bronchodilators) relieve spasms;
- mucolytics dilute sputum and facilitate its separation;
- anti-inflammatory drugs;
- antibiotics – in the presence of severe inflammatory processes;
- physiotherapy - upon completion of inflammatory processes.
Doctor's prescriptions can be supplemented with folk remedies. Treatment of smoker's cough with folk remedies using decoctions and infusions is called herbal medicine.
Decoctions are often used:
- Infusion of wild rosemary and thyme. Mix equally, place two tablespoons in a glass of boiling water, boil for half an hour in a water bath, then leave for 15 minutes and strain. Dose 1/3 cup before meals.
- Herbal decoction of chamomile, rose hips and honey. If desired, add plantain, linden blossom and coltsfoot. Dosage: 1/3 cup morning, afternoon and evening.
- A decoction of thyme and dandelion flowers. Infuse one tablespoon of the mixture in a glass of boiling water for an hour. Recommended dose: two tablespoons three times a day between meals.

Review of medications for treating smokers’ cough: what will help get rid of the problem
After many years of addiction to cigarettes, many people are faced with such a problem as a constant and painful cough. It causes not only external inconvenience (scares everyone around, distracts, provokes a sore throat, voice problems), but also causes more dangerous diseases of the bronchi and lungs. A cough from smoking must definitely be cured, fortunately there are many medications now. In this article we will look at the most effective way to treat smoker’s cough - we will study the most popular medicines and tablets for smoker’s cough...
Nature of attacks
Why does coughing occur? It begins due to the fact that cigarette smoke irritates the nerve receptors of the bronchi. The longer and more a person smokes, the more chemicals accumulate on the walls of the respiratory organs.
The body tries to fight these foreign components and causes an accumulation of antibodies that should destroy the harmful objects. Since new doses of toxic components will constantly enter the body with each cigarette smoked, the substances will not be completely eliminated. Every month there will be more and more deposits, which will intensify attacks and cause concomitant diseases.
What to do? You need to start taking an effective cough medicine. There are many suitable medications. Their goal:
- Dull irritation in the bronchi.
- Reduce spasms.
- Soften your throat.
- Get rid of accumulated mucus (expectorant medications).
Two types of drugs
It is a mistake to believe that smoker's cough remedies should completely block spasms and help get rid of this symptom. In fact, to alleviate the condition, you need to take two types of drugs:
- Expectorants for smokers (they intensify attacks, but help remove phlegm).
- Medicines to alleviate coughing attacks (taken when a person needs to go out into society, and he does not want to scare anyone with attacks).
It is important to understand that in order to get rid of smoker's cough, you will have to be patient. Treatment is a long process, but it must be completed in order to prevent the formation of complications.
How to cause phlegm
Heavy smokers often suffer from difficulty breathing - when it is simply difficult to breathe, the chest is compressed, and wave-like attacks of a dry, cutting cough interfere. This most often happens in the morning.
Why is this happening? There are numerous cilia on the mucous membrane of the bronchi, which are designed to cleanse the respiratory organs of foreign substances. When there are a lot of such substances, the cilia become irritated and provoke spasms, during which foreign components are removed. Due to smoking, eyelashes can die, and substances from cigarette smoke are not removed from the bronchi for a long time. Inflammations occur, which put pressure on the walls of the organ, causing a dry cough - but there are too many formations, and they cannot be removed from the bronchi. That's when a person feels tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing.
In this state, it is impossible to block attacks - the reflex will be muffled, but the bronchi will remain filled with inflammatory formations. First of all, coughing is required - only when the person is able to cough up sputum can treatment be continued (take medications against the cough itself).
Mucus will be easier to expectorate with the following inexpensive but effective medications:
- With moderate accumulation of sputum in the bronchi, medications are prescribed for treatment that enhance the secretion of mucus and increase the sputum itself. For example, this could be Bronholitin cough syrup, Marshmallow Root mixture, Doctor Mom cough syrup, Gedelix drops. Medicines are easily digestible, inexpensive, and have almost no side effects. First, a cough is induced to remove phlegm, and then the attacks will gradually soften.
- An adult patient with a severe cough can be treated and use an expectorant in tablet form - doctors often prescribe Bromhexine or Ambroxol for experienced smokers. In some cases, tablets can be used together with syrups to enhance the effect.
- If breathing is very difficult, since almost no sputum comes out, then the doctor may include mucolytic drugs in the treatment (for example, prescribe Mucaltin or Acetylcysteine). Strong glucocorticoid hormonal agents that help fight cough (Triamcinolone, Paramethasone, Dexamethasone, Betamethasone) may also be prescribed. These drugs are very effective, but they are strong and should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor.
If the attending physician, during examination, determines the onset of the inflammatory process in the bronchi, the patient will be prescribed antibiotics. Only after the inflammation has resolved will expectorants be prescribed.
How to relieve attacks
When a smoker is in society, you should try to get rid of coughing attacks at least for a while. The best relief is provided by drugs that soften the throat. For a smoker's cough, you can use medicated cough strips or cough drops. This is a harmless option, but not the most effective - such medications cannot cure completely. But they help to dissolve phlegm for a moment and temporarily reduce the aggression of attacks.
What type of products should I choose? Any records, tablets, lollipops that contain:
To alleviate coughing attacks, plantain is recommended; it has a gentle effect on the bronchi, fights irritation, dissolves phlegm, and promotes the restoration of damaged tissue (rapid healing of the mucous membrane damaged by a smoker).
Doctor or self-medication: where to stop?
Many people underestimate the disease; they treat smokers’ cough on their own - they select cough medications for smokers themselves and do not consult a doctor. Self-treatment is extremely undesirable; the help of a specialist is required.
Before determining how to treat a chronic cough, it is necessary to conduct a thorough examination to find out the condition of the bronchi and lungs of the smoker. A person needs to be tested for a number of diseases, for the presence of inflammation, tumors, and oncology. Only by making an accurate diagnosis can you find out how to cure a cough. It is impossible to diagnose yourself at home, and incorrectly selected treatment will only do harm. You should not risk your health - it is better to make an appointment with a doctor, and he will tell you which medications are suitable in a particular case.

How to treat smoker's cough
Every smoker sooner or later experiences a cough that occurs due to a bad habit.
At first, when a future smoker “tastes” cigarettes, a cough occurs as a reflex. The body’s protective reaction to inhaled smoke forces the lungs to clear tar and soot. If you continue smoking, the reflex cough goes away. Later, a persistent cough occurs, which is called “smoker’s cough.”
A smoker may develop a cough within the first year, or it may not bother him for decades. The number of cigarettes smoked per day affects the rate of development of the disease, and switching to “light” cigarettes does not bring improvement.
Many smokers soon get used to coughing constantly. For a long time they do not pay attention to the body’s signals and do not begin treatment. The neglected consequences of nicotine addiction are difficult to treat, and the resulting diseases can be life-threatening. If you think about how to get rid of smoker’s cough in time, then serious problems can be avoided.
Cough symptoms
When you inhale cigarette smoke, particles of combustion products settle in the bronchi. Over time, the mobile “cilia” of the upper layer of bronchial tissue become overgrown with resins and cease to perform protective functions. The process of natural cleaning of the bronchi stops, toxic substances penetrate into the lungs, destroying the alveoli. As a result, breathing becomes difficult and oxygen supply to the body is disrupted. A chronic inflammatory process in the lower respiratory tract – non-infectious bronchitis – gradually develops.
Due to disruption of the normal functioning of the bronchi, mucus accumulates in large quantities, thickens, and the smoker begins to cough.
Loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, and high fatigue are often observed. These symptoms are associated with oxygen starvation of the body and low absorption of nutrients. Smoke, tar and nicotine directly poison all organ systems, disrupting the normal rhythm of their work.
Important! Damage to the respiratory system also occurs with passive smoking! Protect your loved ones from smoke!
A cough from smoking is different from a cold. There are no other respiratory symptoms, no runny nose or sore throat. Body temperature does not increase.
Characteristic features of a smoker's cough:
- Exacerbation in the morning immediately after waking up or after smoking the first cigarette
- Expectoration is difficult, prolonged
- Sputum is viscous, yellow-green or brown
- Hoarse voice
- Frequent shortness of breath during exercise and even at rest
- Headaches, chest pain
- Chronic fatigue, fatigue.
Particularly unpleasant is a severe dry cough that occurs in attacks. It is accompanied by severe tension in the pectoral muscles, sometimes chest pain, and a feeling of suffocation. It occurs more often in the evening and at night and prevents smokers from falling asleep. It can also bother you in the morning, causing severe bronchospasm.
In the morning, the mucus that accumulated during the night takes a long time to clear. An obsessive wet cough occurs, which can last for an hour. Sputum comes out with difficulty, has a viscous consistency and an unpleasant odor.
Of particular danger is the appearance of sputum with blood. Blood streaks indicate damage to blood vessels and tissues, which can be caused by serious diseases. To rule out pneumonia and lung cancer, you should consult a doctor.
Important! The regular appearance of blood in the sputum indicates a serious illness!
The onset of a cough may also indicate the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The disease develops over years, gradually leading to airway obstruction. In the worst cases, patients with COPD are forced to breathe through an oxygen mask almost constantly.
Treatment with medications
You can completely get rid of smoker's cough only by quitting smoking forever. Other methods are aimed at temporary relief; they relieve symptoms, but do not guarantee long-term improvement. Chronic bronchitis, which occurs as a result of long-term smoking, is especially difficult to treat.
In any case, you should consult a doctor who will prescribe an examination to rule out dangerous diseases of a bacterial nature. A therapist or pulmonologist deals with problems of the respiratory system.
The doctor will not only explain how to treat a smoker’s cough, but will also advise on completely quitting nicotine. Modern medicine offers many methods; you should not ignore the methods suggested by your doctor.
Important! The fastest way to regain strength and health is to quit smoking!
Treatment begins with temporarily quitting cigarettes or reducing their number as much as possible. During therapy, you can use a nicotine patch or take pills that relieve nicotine cravings. It is possible to switch to an electronic cigarette, which does not emit smoke and allows the bronchi to cleanse.
Drugs for treatment are selected individually, depending on the degree of tissue damage and the nature of the cough. It can be:
Mucolytic syrups or tablets are designed to thin the discharge. Less viscous sputum moves away from the walls of the bronchi more easily. The amount of mucus may increase, but it is much easier to expectorate.
There are herbal and synthetic preparations. Herbal medicines can have a natural base from: marshmallow root, ivy, plantain, primrose, licorice root (Herbion, Hedelix, Doctor MOM, etc.). During the day, you can dissolve herbal lozenges or lozenges. They soften coughs, soothe the throat and make breathing easier.
Synthetic products are in some cases more effective (ACC, Lazolvan, Ambroxol). They help relieve inflammation and heal epithelial tissue. Some products are used for inhalation with a nebulizer. The attending physician must select the correct synthetic medicine.
Important! Do not take drugs that inhibit the functioning of the cough center! This will lead to dangerous stagnation in the bronchi.
Tablets or inhalation sprays relieve bronchospasm, greatly facilitating breathing (Ventolin, Salbutomol). The lumen of the bronchi expands, chest pain and the feeling of suffocation go away, and phlegm comes out more easily.
Used only in cases where the smoker’s weakened respiratory system has been affected by bacteria. A preliminary examination is carried out, blood tests and sputum samples are taken.
Prescribed to relieve swelling of the respiratory tract, a general reduction in allergic manifestations (Claritin, Suprastip, etc.).
They replenish the lack of nutrients in the body, accelerate metabolism and recovery processes. Raises the overall tone of the body, helping in the fight against fatigue.
Traditional methods
If going to the doctor is postponed, you can start treatment at home.
Supporters of traditional medicine and herbal medicine know how to cure a cough and remove phlegm using improvised means.
Important! When using traditional recipes, watch out for the occurrence of allergic reactions.
The most accessible and effective ways are:
Milk and dairy products.
A person who smokes should regularly consume fermented baked milk, whey and other dairy products.
Honey and bee products.
Honey perfectly softens annoying coughs, eliminates discomfort in the larynx, and strengthens the immune system. It can be added to warm drinks and dissolved in teaspoons throughout the day.
For treatment, radish juice is used as a strong natural expectorant. To do this, cut a hole in a large root vegetable and smear its walls with honey. The released juice is taken on an empty stomach for a week.
For rinsing, use decoctions of the following herbs: chamomile, sage, thyme with the addition of mint leaves. Herbal infusions not only thin out mucus, but also have an antiseptic effect on the oral cavity and eliminate the unpleasant old smell of tobacco.
Antitussive tea can be purchased or prepared independently. Brew black or green tea with the addition of: anise, mint, chamomile, ginger, mallow, cumin. A spoonful of honey and a slice of lemon won’t hurt for taste.
Steam inhalations are carried out using breast mixtures and essential oils; at home it is convenient to use a special device for inhalation. Fir or eucalyptus oil can be added to a hot bath or breathed in oil vapors in a bathhouse.
Any treatment methods will not be effective if combustion products and carcinogenic tars continue to enter the smoker’s body. You should seriously think about your own health and make the right decision - to quit smoking completely.
After quitting cigarettes, a cough may bother a smoker for several months. This is a variant of the norm; the respiratory system is cleansed and restored gradually. The speed of recovery depends on age, smoking history and general health. Ultimately, if treatment is started in a timely manner, the lungs and bronchi will fully restore their functions.

Smoker's cough
Each new day of a person who cannot live for a day without a cigarette most often begins with a “procedure for cleansing the bronchi.” His relatives have to listen to the smoker’s cough of varying intensity and strain. And this is a problem not only for the person who smokes, but also for the people around him. After all, as research shows, passive smoking is no less harmful than active “consumption” of nicotine.
ICD-10 code
Causes of smoker's cough
In order to somehow improve the situation, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of the attack and the causes of the smoker’s cough.
It turns out that tobacco smoke contains over 10 thousand different substances, most of which are harmful to the human body. 200 of them are outright poisons. By inhaling it, the smoker poisons himself and contact irritation of the bronchial mucosa occurs. Penetrating into the organ, the resins present in the smoke cover the internal lining of the bronchioles with soot, which negatively affects the normal functioning of the ciliated epithelium.
The cilia of a healthy body “like a trampoline” eject harmful compounds from the bronchi, thereby cleansing the lungs of pollution. Inhibition of their work allows more and more resin to settle on the mucous membrane, worsening the functioning of the entire respiratory system.
This picture leads to constant tissue irritation, which invariably provokes the initiation and development of the inflammatory process, transferring the pathology to the plane of chronic non-infectious bronchitis.
In light of the fact that bronchial cilia also play the role of anti-infective defense, their inhibition allows pathogenic flora to more easily penetrate the respiratory system, superimposing chronic non-infectious bronchitis on an acute infectious lesion.
This situation leads to a significant deterioration in the smoker’s health, which is quite difficult to restore. The disease takes a long time and has more severe complications.
Therefore, with prolonged smoking, a nicotine lover cannot avoid chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Symptoms of a smoker's cough
Attentive people can easily distinguish a person who smokes from one who does not have this bad habit. Symptoms of a smoker’s cough can be observed in nine out of ten people who “calm their nerves” with a cigarette every day for at least two years. With increasing experience of nicotine consumption and/or the number of cigarettes smoked per day, a smoker's cough can be observed in every chicken.
Non-infectious bronchitis begins to manifest itself first with minor episodic coughing after waking up in the morning. Such spasms do not cause a person much discomfort and are not accompanied by pain symptoms or discharge of pulmonary sputum.
Over time, the intensity of the attacks increases; when coughing, traces of mucous masses begin to come out, having a colorless, greenish or grayish tint. Gradually, bloody streaks may join the sputum.
With increasing experience, the “morning cleansing procedure” from a slight cough turns into a protracted deep cough, sometimes leading to attacks of vomiting. At this stage of lung damage, a person already needs to make enough efforts to clear the bronchi. During this procedure, the “patient” may experience a lack of oxygen. The body's reaction to injected tobacco smoke may be nausea.
The amount of sputum excreted increases in volume and density. A prolonged and strained cough provokes a cutting pain in the chest.
A smoker’s cough differs from a symptom of a cold or an infectious lesion of the body in that the body temperature remains within normal limits and no other signs of infectious infection are visible. The attacks occur predominantly and with greater intensity immediately after sleep, decreasing in intensity towards lunch.
If a person has sufficient experience of “communicating with a cigarette,” then fast walking, intense physical activity, or a sharp breath provoke shortness of breath and a coughing attack.
Smoker coughing up blood
Tobacco smoke increasingly irritates lung tissue, provoking a chronic inflammatory process. This picture of the disease with the overlap of other pathological factors can lead to aggravation of the situation and the development of a more severe disease. It could be:
- Lungs' cancer.
- Pneumonia.
- Chronic or acute bronchitis (non-infectious and/or infectious).
- Bronchiectasis.
- Tuberculosis.
- Lung abscess is the formation of purulent cavities in the lung.
- Pulmonary embolism.
A worsening health situation “forces” the body to signal about it. With this picture of pathology, a smoker may well cough up blood. This is a fairly serious factor that forces people to sound the alarm and seek help from a specialist.
The above diseases, as a rule, are present in the history of many smokers who have a long history of exposure to cigarettes and have reached the age of 40 years.
Smoker's cough in the morning
For people who cannot do without a cigarette for a long time, a smoker's cough in the morning becomes common. Every day begins with the fact that after waking up you should thoroughly cleanse your lungs, freeing them from harmful tobacco tars accumulated during the night.
If a person does not have such a habit, then these symptoms indicate the presence of some disease in his body. For a smoker, this is the first call about the approach of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which “will not pass by” any person with a cigarette if he does not immediately give up the bad habit. After all, accumulating in the lungs, harmful substances inhibit the normal functioning of the pulmonary epithelium, which pathogens invariably try to take advantage of.
Severe cough in a smoker
Gaining nicotine experience, smokers and those around them begin to observe that the most severe cough in a smoker occurs in the morning: immediately after waking up or immediately after the first puff was taken.
This fact can be explained quite simply. During the night, nicotine smoke that enters the lungs settles in tar fractions on the epithelial layer of the inner lining of the bronchiole.
After awakening, all physiological processes in the human body are activated. Soot on the lungs irritates the receptors, causing rejection of “foreigners”. Hence the strong morning attacks, which over time lose their intensity, decreasing to a minimum or completely disappearing by the afternoon.
To get rid of unpleasant morning discomfort, the most effective way is to quit smoking, but it’s a pity that only a few are able to cope with their desires.
Dry cough in a smoker
At first, the smoker’s cough is quite dry, but a few spasms and the attack goes away. As the duration of the bad habit in question increases, the cough usually changes from dry to wet, which resolves with the release of a certain amount of sputum. But there are cases where the transformation did not occur and a smoker continues to have a dry cough. Against the background of existing pathologies and complications, the dryness of the process brings more discomfort to a person than the removal of sputum, which is a kind of lubricant.
At the same time, dryness only aggravates discomfort and brings more irritation to the mucous membrane. This pattern of pathology increases inflammation of the airways, making the inhalation process problematic.
A dry cough aggravates the process, causing acute cutting pain symptoms in the chest. There is a disturbance in blood flow caused by an increase in chest pressure and problems in the respiratory tract. In isolated cases, this pathology can even cause a rib fracture.
Constant smoker's cough
“Smoker's bronchitis” is the term doctors use to describe attacks in people who suffer from this bad habit for a long time. If the experience of “communication with a cigarette” is long enough, then a smoker’s constant cough is already an integral feature of a person’s life.
When exposed to nicotine, pathological changes affect almost all internal organs and systems of a person. In addition to the periodic desire of a person to clear his throat, a smoker differs from others not only in the state of his poor health, but also in his external appearance, which is not entirely healthy: a yellow complexion, nicotine plaque on the teeth, and others. But one of the main ones is periodic coughing attacks, which constantly injure the bronchi, increasing the severity of the inflammatory process.
Quit smoker's cough
Almost everyone knows that a smoker’s morning begins with fits of hacking cough. But perhaps only these brave souls and their close circle know about the situation faced by most people endowed with willpower and the desire to quit a bad habit. It is believed that smoking provokes morning attacks, but as soon as a person stops consuming nicotine, as if by magic, the harmful symptoms will go away.
As numerous experiences of such refusals show, strange as it may seem, everything happens the other way around. As soon as a person decides to lead a healthy lifestyle, the cough not only does not stop, but rapidly gains momentum. The cough of a smoker who has quit smoking simply suffocates a person, not allowing him to breathe freely. Why does this paradox arise?
Physiologically, nature dictates that the respiratory organs have secretions that produce mucus, which performs protective functions, protecting the respiratory system from invasion of pathogenic bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms. The cilia of the epithelial layer present on the mucous membrane, in a healthy state, moving in waves, push out excess mucus from the lungs and harmful substances and dust that enter with the inhaled air.
In a situation with a smoker, the function of the cilia is inhibited and the poisons and toxins that enter the bronchi along with nicotine settle on the mucous membrane, accumulating. Excellent conditions are created for the invasion and proliferation of infections and pathogenic bacteria, which can lead to purulent abscesses and other pathological, sometimes irreversible, processes. Now the person has made a responsible decision to quit smoking. What is happening in his body?
It turns out that after nicotine stops entering the lungs, the organ gradually begins to restore its lost functions. The cilia of the epithelium are activated and begin “general cleaning” of deposits of harmful resins that have accumulated over many years of smoking. It is this process that causes increased coughing attacks - the body is in a hurry to quickly get rid of the foreign conglomerate.
Therefore, severe attacks after giving up a bad habit are a completely reasonable and natural process necessary for the body to cleanse itself.
Where does it hurt?
Diagnosis of smoker's cough
In order to most accurately diagnose a smoker’s cough, the attending physician first familiarizes himself with the patient’s medical history, finding out the length of service and the number of cigarettes smoked during one day.
- A blood test is required: both a general analysis and a biochemical one.
- The patient's sputum samples are also sent for examination. This study is carried out to identify tuberculosis microbacteria and other pathogenic flora. After identifying microorganisms, a test is carried out to determine their sensitivity to antibiotics.
- And of course, in this case, you can’t do without a fluorogram. In a smoker, this image almost always shows an expansion of the lung tissue, a more contrasting contouring of the pattern, some areas appear slightly darkened.
- Another building block in favor of a smoker’s cough is the shape of the chest; it often takes on a barrel-shaped outline.
What needs to be examined?

Treatment of smoker's cough
The only effective way to get rid of morning attacks is to completely abandon the bad habit: the source of irritation is eliminated and its negative consequences gradually go away. But immediately after this important step, coughing attacks naturally intensify. To ease their intensity and improve the overall health of former and current smokers, you can use numerous methods to clear your lungs after smoking and soften your cough.
This problem is dealt with by a pulmonologist. Treatment of smoker's cough is carried out comprehensively using both traditional medicine methods, physiotherapeutic techniques, and folk remedies for relieving the problem.
To improve the release of sputum, the doctor prescribes mucolytic drugs to his patient, which reduce the density of mucus, thereby facilitating its removal from the lung tissues. These may be: ACC, bromhexine, ambroxol, marshmallow, lbexin Muco, M-anticholinergics, glucocorticoids.
Ambroxol shows high effectiveness both when the patient has a dry cough and a wet one. The thing is that the components of this drug actively dilute the mucus that collects in the bronchi, making it much easier to cleanse the body of it.
The dosage of the drug is determined at the rate of 1 mg per kilogram of the patient’s weight. The resulting amount is divided into three to four daily doses.
For adult patients, the drug is prescribed on average one tablet with a dosage of 30 mg, taken two to three times throughout the day. Ambroxol is drunk immediately after meals with a sufficient amount of liquid.
It is undesirable to take the drug in question if the smoker’s body is hypersensitive to the components of the drug, during the first trimester of pregnancy, or if the patient has a history of phenylketonuria or liver failure.
If an infection is recognized in the patient's body, antibiotics are introduced into the treatment protocol. The list of drugs in this group is quite extensive. This may be: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, roxithromycin, cefaclor, cefroxitine, fusidine, clarithromycin and others.
The drug chloramphenicol is administered orally, whole, without chewing. The greatest effectiveness is obtained when taken half an hour before a meal or an hour after a meal. The medicine is taken at regular intervals.
When conducting a treatment course, adult patients are usually prescribed the drug in a dosage of 0.25–0.5 g three to four doses per day. In the case of a severe form of infection, the dosage can be increased to 0.5–1.0 g three to four times throughout the day.
The maximum permissible daily amount of administered medication is 4 g. The duration of the treatment course is from one to one and a half weeks.
A contraindication for the administration of chloramphenicol is individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as to thiamphenicol and azidamphenicol. The drug in question should not be prescribed if the patient has a history of severe liver, heart and/or kidney dysfunction, dermatological diseases of fungal etiology, acute respiratory diseases, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. In addition to the tablet form of administration, syrups are used, as well as herbal solutions that are used for inhalation. Spa treatment is also effective.
But pills alone cannot solve this problem. With increased mucus excretion, you can get drying out of the bronchial tissues, which does not improve, but aggravates the situation. Therefore, during the period of therapy it is necessary to increase fluid intake. If there are no medical contraindications, its volume can be increased to three or even four liters per day. It can be juices, compotes, fruit drinks or plain water. Also at the time of treatment it is necessary to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
To enhance the removal of sputum, even representatives of classical medicine effectively use herbal tinctures and breathing exercises. Increased physical activity makes a positive contribution to the restoration of the respiratory system. Here you can choose an activity to your liking: dancing, jogging, swimming in the pool, visiting fitness rooms, aerobics and others. Loads should be increased gradually.
Walks in nature are very useful, especially if they take place in a pine forest.
How to get rid of smoker's cough?
As mentioned earlier, the only answer to the question of how to get rid of a smoker’s cough is to give up this bad habit. Only in this case, and then over time after cleaning the lungs, can you get rid of the problem in question. But in any case, it is possible to improve the situation using both pharmacological agents and traditional medicine recipes.
Today, on the shelves of any pharmacy you can find drugs, both synthetically produced and those made from raw materials of plant origin.
To help those who want to give up their bad habit, doctors, pharmacologists and engineers have developed a device called an electric cigarette. Modern medicine is ready to offer special patches, which, according to the instructions, significantly reduce the patient’s craving for nicotine and the desire to smoke.
Smoker's cough remedies
As sad as it may sound, the problem of smoking has long acquired universal proportions. As statistics have shown, in 2012 the number of people who smoke rapidly approached one billion. At the same time, it is also frightening that the age of people who tried a cigarette for the first time is getting younger and it is no longer news to meet somewhere in the alley of a ten-year-old teenager professionally puffing on a cigarette.
Against the backdrop of the fight against smoking, pharmaceutical companies have also become more active, offering drugs with slightly different effects:
- Dosage forms that dilute sputum and allow them to be eliminated more productively.
- Drugs that suppress the need to smoke.
- Smoker's cough remedies.
Today, advertising comes to the aid of those who want to get rid of their addiction, offering special chewing gum, nicotine patches or electronic cigarettes, which should quickly and effortlessly rid a person of the problem. But can we trust the replicated miracle? Answers to this question should be sought from a qualified doctor.
You should familiarize yourself with the offered product in more detail.
The electronic cigarette was developed and offered to consumers in 2004. This product is a pipe shaped like a cigarette and imitates the smoking process. When the “device” is turned on, smoke begins to emanate from it, supplied with a small dose of nicotine.
Such a device has both its pros and cons.
- The absence of smoke, and, accordingly, its smell, which has an irritating effect on non-smoking surroundings. At the same time, this smell does not penetrate into hands and clothes.
- The yellowish plaque on the teeth gradually disappears.
- A healthier skin tone is restored.
- The inhalation procedure is improved.
- The body begins to receive the required amount of oxygen.
- There is a decrease in body poisoning by toxins.
- The patient's general health improves.
- Physical dependence on cigarettes is gradually eliminated.
- The risk of passive smoking for others goes away.
- Reducing environmental pollution.
- The psychological dependence on cigarettes remains unresolved.
- When simulating smoking, quitting a cigarette may not occur. In this situation, on the contrary, the problem may worsen: getting rid of tobacco smoking will not occur, but addiction to the electronic cigarette will appear.
- If a person is prone to allergic reactions, then there is a high probability of developing it.
Now we need to figure out what a nicotine patch is? It looks like an ordinary patch. It's all about the composition that is applied to it. It is developed based on nicotine. When this patch is glued to the body, the nicotine contained in it penetrates into the body through the epidermis, which reduces the body’s need to smoke another cigarette.
- This product is easy to use. Apply daily to healthy areas of the skin that are not covered with hair. It is used on average for two to three months, but not more than six months.
- It is absolutely harmless to the people around the “patient” and the natural environment.
- There is also a saving in time that was previously spent on the smoking procedure.
- Many consider it effective in reducing the desire to smoke a cigarette, and over time completely eliminates the bad habit.
- There is a high probability of developing an allergic reaction and sleep disturbances.
- The psychological dependence on a habit developed over the years is not eliminated.
Today it is impossible to decide on the most productive way to get rid of a destructive passion: one thing is more suitable for some, and another for others. But only one thing can be said unequivocally: without the desire of the person himself and efforts on his part, any means are powerless.
Smoker's cough tablets
Modern pharmacology every day offers the consumer more and more new means to reduce the severity of the procedure for giving up a negative addiction. A wide range of smoker's cough tablets are also available. In this article we will look at some of them.
The N-cholinomimetic Tabex, the active substance of which is cytisine, is prescribed orally, as a whole tablet. It is advisable to begin treatment only when the patient himself is psychologically determined to give up cigarettes and undergo treatment.
The medicine is taken according to the recommended schedule. The first three days you need to take one tablet six times throughout the day, maintaining an interval of two hours. While introducing the drug, it is necessary to gradually reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day.
The medicine should be taken in the intervals between cigarettes, which will lengthen these intervals.
If after three days it has not been possible to reduce the daily amount of tobacco smoked, then the “experiment” must be interrupted and returned to it after two to three months.
If the effectiveness of the intake is evident, then the treatment schedule should be continued.
From the 4th to the 12th day of the course, one tablet is also taken, but the interval between doses is extended to 2.5 hours (five daily tablets).
From the 13th to the 16th day, take one tablet, with an interval between doses of 3 hours (four daily tablets).
From the 17th to the 20th day, take one tablet, with an interval between doses of 5 hours (three daily tablets).
From the 21st to the 25th day, take one or two tablets per day.
The developers strongly recommend stopping smoking completely no later than the fifth day of the course.
During this period, psychological support for the patient will not hurt.
Contraindications to the drug include individual intolerance to the components of the drug, arterial hypertension, ulcerative lesions of the digestive system, pulmonary edema and others.
At the same time, drugs are prescribed that help the smoker remove sputum from the body: mucaltin (in case of dry cough), bronchogen, fluimucil and others.
Bronchogen is taken one capsule twice a day, 20 minutes before meals. The course of treatment is a month.
Treatment of smoker's cough with folk remedies
Traditional and alternative medicine are based on the same principles of allopathic traditional therapy. As with medical intervention, treating a smoker’s cough with folk remedies primarily involves giving up the bad habit. At the same time, the person himself must psychologically tune in to this emotionally quite difficult process.
Since ancient times, healers who wished to get rid of harmful passions offered various decoctions and tinctures from medicinal herbal collections. The composition necessarily included herbs with mucolytic (reducing the density of sputum) and expectorant (allowing their easier removal) characteristics. Quite often, one collection could include certain herbs of various effects. But such a tandem does not always bring the necessary therapeutic effect. Therefore, often, the patient received two “medicines”: first, a mucolytic drug was taken, and after some time an expectorant was administered. Herbs such as chamomile, calendula, elecampane, marshmallow and many others have proven themselves to be very effective in treating smoker’s cough.
Herbal tinctures based on these plants are still widely used to this day for inhalation, another treatment method. Essential oils obtained from medicinal plants are also used for this procedure.
But folk treatment was not limited to this only. The measures that were supposed to help the smoker included and include:
- A visit to the bathhouse, which allows you to remove harmful substances that affect the body through the skin pores. This procedure helps to quickly cope with withdrawal symptoms, which are inevitable after quitting smoking.
- Massages and rubbing of the chest area.
- Taking homeopathic medicines: carbo vegetabilis, antimonium tartaricum, acidum phosphoricum and others.
You can also offer the following recipe for stopping the attack in question:
Place a glass of whey on the fire and heat to 40–50°C. Drink two to three times throughout the day. Milk is taken in the same way - it perfectly cleanses the “sick” body of toxins.
You can gargle with a soda solution: add half a teaspoon of soda to a glass of water. The cough will soften and the phlegm will come out easier.
But it should be remembered that a morning cough cannot be cured with any miraculous remedies unless the person stops smoking, since the source of the irritation has not been eliminated.
Cough herbs for smokers
As mentioned earlier, cough herbs for smokers show quite high effectiveness. The most famous and used in treatment are: chamomile, oregano, thyme, eucalyptus, plantain, wild rosemary, elecampane, marshmallow leaves and root, fennel, mallow, coltsfoot, thyme, St. John's wort, lavender, calendula, wild ginger, licorice root , anise seeds and others.
To obtain a mucoltic effect, you can gargle with herbal decoctions: chamomile, sage, eucalyptus.
Here are some recipes that will help get rid of the problem, or at least mitigate the pathological intensity of their manifestation.
- It is worth trying this medicine, which shows high effectiveness in combating smoker’s cough, and which can be quite easily prepared at home. It is necessary to take equal proportions (a tablespoon each) of the crushed dry components of Bogulnik and St. John's wort. The collection is poured with a glass of boiling water. Place on the stove and cook over low heat for about five minutes. Add this composition to a teapot with freshly brewed black tea. Take several times throughout the day. After two to three days, the sputum will begin to actively disappear, and after one to two weeks, the coughing attacks should stop.
- Thyme tea is highly effective against smoker's cough. Pour a tablespoon of herb into 200 ml of boiling water. Wrap the container of tea well and leave for 10 minutes. Add 150 mg of freshly squeezed dandelion root juice to the infusion (its aqueous extract, which can be found in a pharmacy, is also suitable). Split into two doses and drink morning and evening. Thyme works as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory, while dandelion is a source of easily digestible mineral salts that promote a more active removal of toxins from the body.
- And this proposed recipe will help restore partially lost respiratory functions of the lungs and liver function, which are so important during the recovery period. This effect is achieved by teas prepared from chamomile, alfalfa or rose hips. The drink relieves the body of inflammation and allows you to quickly cleanse it of toxins and other harmful substances deposited in the bronchi.
- Another recipe. Make a collection: taking two parts each of thyme and crushed marshmallow roots, one part each of crushed licorice root, anise seeds, sage leaves and pine buds. Add a tablespoon of well-mixed medicinal herbs into a thermos and fill it with 300 ml of just boiled water. Leave to infuse for about an hour. Strain the finished infusion and add a tablespoon of honey. Take a quarter glass three to five times throughout the day. Duration of treatment is three weeks.
- Onion balm is also suitable; for this you need to take 250 g of onions, which should be peeled and chopped. Add 200 g of sugar, 0.5 liters of water and onion into a small saucepan. Place the pan on low heat and, stirring constantly, boil for at least three hours. Then set aside and let cool. Add 20g of honey to the warm mixture and leave for another third of an hour, then strain. Place the liquid in a container with a tight lid and store in a cool place. The therapeutic dosage is a tablespoon five to six times a day.
Smoker's cough syrup
Recently, such a form of medicine as smoker's cough syrup has also found wide use in the fight against this problem. Often, the following drugs are used to relieve the problem: gedelix, Doctor Mom, biocalyptol, eucabal and their analogues.
Gedelix - this syrup allows you to slow down and then eliminate the inflammatory process in the respiratory organs. It effectively removes sputum, sometimes even purulent.
The drug is prescribed in a dosage of 5 ml, which is the same as half a measuring cup or one teaspoon. The syrup is taken twice a day. The only prohibition against prescribing this drug is individual intolerance to the components of Hedelix by the patient’s body.
Smoker's cough syrup
Not the last place in the process of getting rid of the current situation is occupied by smoker’s cough medicine. If you give up cigarettes, ambroxol, bronchosan, bronchipret, and various breast preparations that have expectorant or mucaltic characteristics will help relieve the problem. The drug is prescribed based on the nature of the cough (wet or dry).
The expectorant ambroxol is taken orally by the smoker during a meal, using a measuring spoon in the amount of 5 ml, which corresponds to one measuring spoon. During the day it is necessary to carry out two such receptions.
The duration of therapy is determined individually by the specialist, but on average ranges from four days to two weeks.
Contraindications to the drug include individual intolerance to the components of the drug, as well as ulcerative lesions of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract.
